PlayStation Plus: January Preview

It’s almost time for the New Year, and we’re ready to kick-off 2014 in a big way. January’s Instant Game Collection will offer PlayStation Plus members loads of amazing titles, starting off with a new PlayStation 4 title — Don’t Starve. A wilderness survival game wrapped in a cute art style, you’ll take control of a Gentleman Scientist trying to make his way home from a mysterious place. Be warned – this is one of those games where you’ll die a lot, but if you ever get frustrated, just look at how cute your buddy Chester is and I’m sure everything will be okay.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you’ll be able to download three critically acclaimed games – DMC Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. DMC Devil May Cry is a reboot of the beloved franchise, and while Dante may have received a haircut and a new backstory, his weapons and fighting style should be fairly familiar to fans.

Created by the same folks who brought us BioShock, BioShock Infinite has received multiple Game of the Year nominations. This isn’t your average first-person shooter, you’ll gather vigors throughout your journey that will fling your enemies sky-high or unleash a horde of birds to peck at your foes.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons tugs at your heartstrings as you take control of two brothers (who would’ve guessed?), trying to cure their ailing father. You’ll be handling the sons with each analog stick, so once you get the hang of controlling two characters at once, you’ll need to solve various puzzles in order to save the day.

This month PlayStation Vita owners will be able to download Worms: Battle Island and Smart As. Worms: Battle Island stays true to the classic Worms formula of charming turn-based strategy gameplay. You can customize your wormy soldiers and use crazy weapons to take out the opposition.

Finally, Smart As will become your brain’s new best friend. Run through a series of mind-boggling challenges, and see where you stack up against your friends and other people in the world on the leaderboards. If you practice every day, maybe one day you’ll hit the top.

We’re also trying something new this month – we’ve created a video preview highlighting all of the titles you’ll receive as a Plus member, so give it a look and let me know what you think in the comments below!

  • Great list.

  • Whoa, awesome.

  • Fantastic!

  • Dat line-up.

  • Wooooooooooo! #woooooooo.

Only game on there that I’ve played is Bioshock. Can’t wait for the rest of them!

Question for those who haven’t gotten Bioshock. Does it include the digital version of Bioshock 1 also? I imagine it doesn’t, but just thought I’d ask.

  • The Vita selection is subpar, but the PS3 selection is AMAZING.

  • ALRIGHT! Never played Bioshock Infinite, infact I’ve never played Bioshock, lol. Never got a chance to play the new DmC aswell. This is a very good month, much like the others. Keep it up PlayStation!

  • Nice Work on the Video but one problem, it shows Sonic All Stars Racing on PS3 instead of Vita.

  • I just bought Bioshock in that Black Friday flash sale on PSN. Though, considering my PS+ ran out on the day before my birthday, Dec. 11, and the game hasn’t been played by some, I’m glad to see it.

I really need to get Plus again, because I can’t miss out on Brothers for free!

  • I Never add my comments on this. But January is gonna be a good month. Looking forward to bioshock!!!

  • Had a feeling Infinite was going show up on plus. Almost jumped on it last sale.

I have to say Great month! PS+ has been actually really redeeming itself after the pinball summer. Good job sony!

  • Amazing, thanks for another great month.

  • …and THIS is way I returned to PlayStation. Great deal as I’m a PS3 and PS4 owner. Maybe it’s time to start investing in a Vita as well.

  • Its no doubt a great month just please stop with the psp games!!
Also great job on the video preview Kristine, its great!

  • THANK YOU SONY, finally a good month, i gotta admit man, its been a hit and alot of misses with ps plus this year in north america. it looks like you guys listened and started giving us games that are on par with europes, i greatly appreciate it.

  • Quality selection of games for all types of people. Not all of them interest me, but the ones that do I heavily appreciate.

  • PS3 is amazing, I have to try Don’t Starve. I like worms but I’m disappointed in Vita’s, I finally get a month where I don’t own the games and I get the Vita game Smart As… Can people like me who are helping everyone produce income for new games by actually buying these games get a form of compensation if we own them pls.
gain though, that’s a amazing PS3 line up, and I am interested in don’t starve

  • Why you give us psp game again?
horrible update for ps vita owner

    • appreciate the note, if you have any recommondations for what you’d want to see on vita’s plus igc, let us know =) providing more details helps to get your feedback better heard. thanks!

  • This couldn’t be better! I’m feeling the hype already!

  • OMG Bioshock Infinite……………Thank you SONY!!!

  • First time I’ve been impressed by the Free Game list in awhile.

  • this just keeps getting better and better.. I made the switch 2 years ago from the 360 and I never once regretted my choice

  • Man, and I just bought Bioshock and DmC too. Hopefully the DLC will go on sale, that’d be great. Smart As is awesome, and I’ll be glad to have it digitally, and yay Don’t Starve! This will also be my first Worms game, so cool. :)

  • PS+ is so awesome. <3 <3 <3

  • Yes to Bioshock Infinite! Now I can beat the game in 1999 mode. It’s not as good as the original, but very close. I’m not too thrilled by the return of a psp game, but I’ll survive.

  • Wow, love it! Excited to try Bioshock Infinite… didn’t sound like my kind of game but have been curious since everyone was talking about it. Also excited for Smart As…. sounds like fun but IMO seemed a bit overpriced when first available.

My only complaint (for lack of a better word) would be my heart always sinks a little when I see a PSP game included in the PS Plus content. Let’s move forward. At least we’re not getting any more PS One games.

  • So at last SONY listened to the fans and started giving us better games than EU PS Plus. Thanks for listening the fans SONY and doing what they want.

  • Wowzers! Only two games I’m interested in. But what an amazing two games it is! Thank you.

  • Great lineup this month, but I am irritated that I just bought bioshock infinite on the Black Friday sale and now it’s free. I thought you guys said that you were going to stop doing this???

  • I don’t know the ps4 game, but the ps3/Vita games are great..

  • Video should stay from now on, Sonic&All Stars Racing Transformed vita is awesome!!!!!!!!!! i will be downloading the 2 vita games and the ps4 one as well.

  • PlaySation, Marry me!!!

  • Awesome update!!! Thanks!!!

  • Oh, cool, a Worms game! Definitely want to pick that up. I finally get to check out Don’t Starve, too. Nice.

  • The video is amazing, great work on that Kristine!

  • Great update! I’ve been wanting to play BioShock Infinite for awhile now!

  • Great! Playstation rules!!!!

  • Isn’t that Worms game a PSP title?! If so, that’s some major false advertising there. I don’t recall hearing about any remake.

After three months in a row without a PSP title, I thought you guys had finally learned that we want native Vita titles only. Guess not :(

    • some months will always be a little different than others, but we’ll always strive to get the best possible titles for the plus community. thanks for the feedback!

  • Game: My Interest Level:
    Don’t Starve: 1/10
    DmC: 0/10
    Bioshock Infinite: 0/10
    Brothers: 5/10
    Worms: 7/10
    Smart as.. : 8/10

  • January is going to be an awesome month. Thanks PS+ Team!

  • Did I miss Urban Trial Freestyle on Vita that was slated to be included with PS Plus in December? I just skimmed-through the December store updates and don’t see anywhere it being listed as free.

  • Best month ever.

Thank you SCEA, you really stepped up your game, please keep it up.

  • And just now I was about to buy Brothers. This update is pretty solid, I hope they keep coming like this on 2014.

  • Well, brothers looks pretty good. I don’t play M’s, and I only have a PS3 so the rest are wasted on me. I hope that one’s good.

Last month Dyad was the only one, and it didn’t really impress me. I actually downloaded Sonic All-stars before realizing it was vita. That was disappointing. I know people used to complain when the same title was given free on two platforms, but I have come to miss it. I missed out on Sine Mora and now Sonic All-stars too. Bummer.

If I’m not up for buying a vita or ps4, it seems like the free titles are going downhill for me. This is why I plan to let my Plus lapse for a while — at least until I pick up a ps4 in 2015 or so. (if ever. That will depend on if the PS4 every plays CD’s, MP3’s, MP4’s, DLNA, etc)

  • @42 Next week.

  • Great lineup! Bio shock infinite, DMC and Brothers?! That’s two AAA titles and downloadable game of the year by Gametrailers. I’m glad smart as is free as I was intrigued by it when it came out, but I wasn’t gonna shell $40 when it came out. Nintendo DSI XL came out with brain age for free.
Never heard of the PS4 option so I guess I will have to downl
