PlayStation Plus: January Preview

It’s almost time for the New Year, and we’re ready to kick-off 2014 in a big way. January’s Instant Game Collection will offer PlayStation Plus members loads of amazing titles, starting off with a new PlayStation 4 title — Don’t Starve. A wilderness survival game wrapped in a cute art style, you’ll take control of a Gentleman Scientist trying to make his way home from a mysterious place. Be warned – this is one of those games where you’ll die a lot, but if you ever get frustrated, just look at how cute your buddy Chester is and I’m sure everything will be okay.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you’ll be able to download three critically acclaimed games – DMC Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. DMC Devil May Cry is a reboot of the beloved franchise, and while Dante may have received a haircut and a new backstory, his weapons and fighting style should be fairly familiar to fans.

Created by the same folks who brought us BioShock, BioShock Infinite has received multiple Game of the Year nominations. This isn’t your average first-person shooter, you’ll gather vigors throughout your journey that will fling your enemies sky-high or unleash a horde of birds to peck at your foes.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons tugs at your heartstrings as you take control of two brothers (who would’ve guessed?), trying to cure their ailing father. You’ll be handling the sons with each analog stick, so once you get the hang of controlling two characters at once, you’ll need to solve various puzzles in order to save the day.

This month PlayStation Vita owners will be able to download Worms: Battle Island and Smart As. Worms: Battle Island stays true to the classic Worms formula of charming turn-based strategy gameplay. You can customize your wormy soldiers and use crazy weapons to take out the opposition.

Finally, Smart As will become your brain’s new best friend. Run through a series of mind-boggling challenges, and see where you stack up against your friends and other people in the world on the leaderboards. If you practice every day, maybe one day you’ll hit the top.

We’re also trying something new this month – we’ve created a video preview highlighting all of the titles you’ll receive as a Plus member, so give it a look and let me know what you think in the comments below!

  • Hi Guys Nice list!

Don’t understand me wrong… i really enjoy being a ps plus subscriber, but you guys needs to be consistent with promotion/free games. You are send a WRONG message to everyone that is do not purchase more games!!!!

DMC, Bioshock Infinite and other previous free games, were at discount with ps plus price, some weeks (maybe months) ago.

Doesn’t feel right, purchase a game in promotion and after a few weeks the same game is offered as free…

I am seriously considering what should I purchase in the ps store as I have to guyess if the game will be free or with a huge price drop soon… For instance GoW Ascension, Alice, Chronicles of Mistara, Ni N No Kuni and so on.

I have a big list to tell you guys. :(

  • I don’t see what people have to complain about really. I like what PS+ is doing and while I wish there was a stronger game for the ps4, I understand why there isn’t. I really have to upgrade my hard drive in my ps3 and the memory card in my vita now though.

  • Played mostly all of the games. But glad other can enjoy them! Including my GOTY of 2013, DmC: Devil May Cry!

  • @waverlock: Yeah, but all those people who bought the games will own them even if they quit Plus. That’s why many of us would like the option to buy games after we’ve “bought” them while they were on the IGC. We’d love to give Sony our money, but we can’t. Anyway you should always buy what you want as long as it fits into your budget. Worrying about whether it will join the IGC soon afterward will spoil your enjoyment.

  • just curious, will bioshock 1 be included with bioshock infinte?

  • wow what an amazing month! I’m gonna have to get the platinum for bioshock infinite now I just need to beat it on 1999 mode & also Morgan when are we getting don’t starve on ps4? is it this coming up Tuesday?

  • wow DMC is one of my favorite games of the generation! definitely my favorite 3rd person action game. it just blows my mind how good a deal PS+ is. GREAT WORK GUYS! :)

  • I think it’s great that they will finally have the new Devil May Cry game. I love that series, and I look forward to seeing what that game has in store for me! I really wish they would put the Sims 3 up here. I wonder if the PS Vita games would work on the PSP that my daughter has?

  • Way to go! Bioshock infinite just went on sale recently, right!? So you’re basically telling us not to buy anything and just wait for it to go free on PS+. Genius!

  • Wow I love that next gen is here, so they can give out lots of great games on last gen now. Just wish there was more to do on PS4 atm.

    Anyway killer update.

  • PS+ is great for gaming on a budget, my Vita and PS3 are workn overtime these days.

  • This is an AWESOME month!

I already have Bioshock Infinite and DmC, but that’s totally okay with me. =D

  • Make me want to. Renew on frebruary, but I still doubt it.

  • Amazing month for Plus, thanks sony!!

  • Hi Morgan,

I wanted to bring to your attention this week’s Xbox Live Arcade sale, which also features Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons at a heavily-discounted price. News of the promotion first became public on Monday, the 23rd of December. Thousands of gamers who have PlayStation and PlayStation Plus also have an Xbox 360, many of which who purchased Brothers as soon as the sale became live. Now a day or two later, Sony announces that Brothers will also be one of the featured PlayStation Plus titles in January. It is difficult to not feel like we just wasted money because we are now getting the title from PlayStation Plus and may even have preferred to play it on PlayStation. I understand that details have to be finalized – this takes time – and are subject to change at any time, but now there are thousands of irate customers who are probably wary of making future purchases because of poor timing like this.

  • (continued)

You’ve mentioned in the past that PlayStation US will try to communicate promotions as early as our European counterparts receive them, but I have not seen that pan out so far. On one site alone that I frequent, I counted over two dozen customers who just purchased Brothers on Xbox and are unhappy with this new development. I don’t want you to take this as criticism because I think for the most part, the majority of people who purchase PlayStation Plus are satisfied with it, but it is my hope that this is something your team will keep in mind in the future. Just a day or two would have saved many of your customers some grief and would have even helped to bolster the PlayStation brand as you create loyal customers all too happy to shop on PlayStation Network when you offer the game at an even lower price. This was a missed opportunity, and I am hopeful that PlayStation Plus will do better in the future.

    Thank you for your time.

    Regards,
    Harry Thompson.

  • Man… where is the love for PS4 owners. Don’t Starve sounds good and all but I was certainly expecting a little more than that.

  • Great month.

  • Kristine,

Wow, megaton update for January! I’m not sure if I’m more excited to play Brothers or Bioshock Infinite. An excellent predicament to have :-)

Also, I like the preview video and hope you keep doing it. I think it’s a great idea though could be just a tad shorter (I know, with all those great games it’s hard to fit them all in :-).

Last but not least, Happy New Year!

    -Paul

  • I’m always up for free PSP games. Don’t let the naysayers make you think otherwise. Thanks. :)

  • Shut up and take my mon……….wait what u mean free?!? goddamn good list.

  • Interested in everything here. Played through Infinite already but it’s a huge surprise to see that here! Great lineup. Glad to see you guys holding strong with the titles even after PS Plus is mandatory (mostly) for PS4. Now it’s mandatory anyway – if you want to have a lot of great games to play, that is!

  • Impressive lineup for January, even with already owning Bioshock Infinite. Hopefully a DLC sale? Again, good results by spreading around the genres. Definitely looking forward to Brothers.

    Keep up the good work.

  • GOOD GOB BOYS…. I LOVE YOU……….please discounts dlcs bioshock, DMC and Gravity rushh :)

  • Forget the whiners…As someone who still owns a PSP and no vita, I appreciate the addition of a PSP game from time to time…Thanks for that!

  • @cinnamonpirate: Dude, it’s Dec. 26th. I can’t remember when we’ve gotten the following month’s preview earlier than this, if ever. It’s nobody’s job at Sony to make sure people with that “other” console save money. Think of it this way: If you like the game that much, why not be happy you paid the company for it?

  • Wow, this is the best month ever for PS3

  • I always recommended ps vita and ps4…..for things like this i dissapointed for those xbox zombies….Never stop playing…..i really love my ps3 ps vita and my ps4…….stay sharp…….

  • O.O You guys…did an amazing job with Plus in January, and here are my thoughts:

Don’t starve: A worthy addition to the PS4 library, i’ve seen it on PC and it’s amazing, it will really be a long one to play I imagine, shame I don’t have a PS4 yet.

DmC: I’ve beaten this on PC, it’s a fantastic little game, truly, truly fantastic, and I will definitely download it to see if it plays better on console with a controller than with a mouse and Keyboard (although it has the best controls of any Hack n’ Slash I’ve played on PC)

Bioshock Infinite: Yes, yes YES!!! I’ve been dying to play this game, I’ve heard such good things about it :D I think it’s going to be the best game in the January Lineup

Brothers: Can’t say, I’ve only seen one video of it, I will definitely give it a shot though

Smart As….: Ahh puzzle games, can’t wait for it.

Worms: Battle Islands: This needs to be on PS3 if you ask me, I love me some worms, however, I would love to play it with my buddy local, so I wish it was the PS3 version, I’ll take it though.

All in all, I think the Vita lineup’s kinda weak compared to the PS3 one, but given how good it was for the Vita this month, it’s nothing to complain about really.

  • I have to ask because everyone wants to know, will driveclub ps+ edition be February’s free title for ps4 we are dieing her please let us know something

  • I’m excited about the January lineup. I’ve been wanting to play Brothers for months now since I tried the demo. So I am happy it will be on PLUS. Also DMC (though the demo froze and restarted my ps3 so I was sort of scared of it)
Not so sure if I can get into Bioshock Infinite. Shooters aren’t really my thing.
For the Vita I am enjoying Sonic racing transformed right now. Smart as sounds ok. Worms is for PSP and I haven’t really been into those games before (Worms),
If I do have to have a psp game, I still vote Hakuoki Demon’s of the Fleeting Cherry Blossom, though I plan on getting the PS3 version when it releases in 2014 sometime. Oh and I hope PLUS does New Little King’s Story too~! Looks like lots of fun.

    Happy Holidays PS and everyone!

  • Don’t Starve is a lot of fun. I’ve been playing it on PC for a long time. Definitely worth picking up if anyone hasn’t tried it. It would make a good controller/couch game. It’s a survival game, but they made it interesting with a very specific vibe and feel. It gets deep quick.

  • WOW! I already have Bioshock, but this is an EXCELLENT month for PS+! I’ve been playing around with the idea of picking up DMC too. Keep up the good work!

  • Morgan Haro I am impressed with your performance!

  • Awesome PS3 Line-up! I have none of the games, and would like to play all of them :)

On Feb, I’d like to see Dragon’s Crown (PS3/Vita) and Awesomenauts (PS4)

To those complaining about Vita’s lineup this month, you’ve had 3 great months in a row… stop complaining :)

  • AWESOME LIST!!

I hope we can see MGR Revengeance and Persona 4 Golden in the next months! :D

  • First i want to say thanks to you guys. The PS+ service is great. This is my second year. Now, i would like to know why we (PS VITA owners) will get another PSP game (at least, give us God of War :P :) ). We need games like the ones you give us this month (soul sacrifice, sonic). In the other hand, the PS3 games are awesome.

This is my PS VITA wish list:

    1. Guacamelee.
    2. Escape Plan
    3. Stick it to the man.
    4. Killzone Mercenary
    5. Lego Marvel
    6. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
    7. Rayman Legends.
    8. Ratchet & Clanck: Full front
    9. Sly Cooper: Thieves in time

Again, thanks for all guys and have a happy new year.

  • Really excited to play DmC and Bioshock:Infinite!

Also Don’t Starve will certainly be installed on my Ps4-

Vita games are a bit lame this month but not every month can be like the last couple!

Uncharted, Sine Mora, Soul Sacrifice, Gravity Rush being my favorites and wow what a great list.

  • Woooo! January looks to be a great month for sure!! I haven’t gotten to play Bioshock Infinite or Devil May Cry yet so this is huge! I just bought Brothers a couple of weeks ago, if I had known it was coming out for free with PS Plus, I would have probably waited lol. ^^; It would have given me an extra game to be excited about with PS Plus. However, if no one else has played it, it’s a good chance for other people to give it a go! I’m also looking forward to Smart As! This is exciting, a new game for all of my systems this month, PS4, PS3 and PS Vita! Sony is the best!! Great selection this month!! :D

  • …and the Boxing day deals you guys emailed me about are where? 40% off? Not seeing it.

  • Nice selection of games, except maybe the Vita ones, unfortunately I already have Bioshock Infinite and DmC. This has happened a lot to me of late.

  • The games on IGC are not decided 2-3 days in advance. Sony doesn’t give Brothers because it was (is) on discount on Xbox live. Don’t blame Sony for this… this is so silly on so many levels.

  • I’ve had DmC in my cart so many times and I’m glad that I held of from buying it. Great way to start off the new year I think!

  • Although I own a few of these amazing titles it is so great that you balance the offerings between indie, mid range and AAA. I wanted to play Brothers but I got distracted by next gen thanks for bringing it to my attention again – ps+ is amazing

  • Very good for ps3 users but how about something new for us ps4 people? My ps3 went YROD and I opted for a ps4 rather than buying another ps3.

I do understand the pool of ps4 games is smaller but I wish they could give us a ps3 title as a conversion (ps3 to ps4) or free ps1 game or something.

I’m a big supporter of playstation plus and so please don’t take this as trolling, I <3 PS!

  • WOW! This is why I am a PS+ member until 2016. If you don’t have PS+ you need to get on board!

    Thanks Sony!

  • Holy cow. That, friends, is a fantastic list.

  • Pretty amazing selection! I just got my Plus account and it’s being reaaaaaaly worth it’s 50 bucks! (got it in November and it’s awsome!)

Any possibility that a Resident Evil game (meaning RE6) to available at Plus in the next couple of months? (If it already was, sorry, but as I just said, I’m a newcomer)

Regards and Merry Xmas and New Year for all of you folks!

  • I never comment on this PS plus announcements and always thought that people complain way too much here… But this time I’ve bothered to come here just to say CONGRATS, guys. This is an AWESOME list. Thank you!

  • All of these games are fantastic. I’ve played all the PS3 games but not on the PS3 so and I haven’t played them in a long time so I really wanna play them again.

I love you PlayStation, this is why we choose you!
