PlayStation Plus: January Preview

Kristine Steimer's Avatar + Posted by Kristine Steimer on Dec 26, 2013 // Sr. Community Specialist

It’s almost time for the New Year, and we’re ready to kick-off 2014 in a big way. January’s Instant Game Collection will offer PlayStation Plus members loads of amazing titles, starting off with a new PlayStation 4 title — Don’t Starve. A wilderness survival game wrapped in a cute art style, you’ll take control of a Gentleman Scientist trying to make his way home from a mysterious place. Be warned – this is one of those games where you’ll die a lot, but if you ever get frustrated, just look at how cute your buddy Chester is and I’m sure everything will be okay.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you’ll be able to download three critically acclaimed games – DMC Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. DMC Devil May Cry is a reboot of the beloved franchise, and while Dante may have received a haircut and a new backstory, his weapons and fighting style should be fairly familiar to fans.

Created by the same folks who brought us BioShock, BioShock Infinite has received multiple Game of the Year nominations. This isn’t your average first-person shooter, you’ll gather vigors throughout your journey that will fling your enemies sky-high or unleash a horde of birds to peck at your foes.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons tugs at your heartstrings as you take control of two brothers (who would’ve guessed?), trying to cure their ailing father. You’ll be handling the sons with each analog stick, so once you get the hang of controlling two characters at once, you’ll need to solve various puzzles in order to save the day.

This month PlayStation Vita owners will be able to download Worms: Battle Island and Smart As. Worms: Battle Island stays true to the classic Worms formula of charming turn-based strategy gameplay. You can customize your wormy soldiers and use crazy weapons to take out the opposition.

Finally, Smart As will become your brain’s new best friend. Run through a series of mind-boggling challenges, and see where you stack up against your friends and other people in the world on the leaderboards. If you practice every day, maybe one day you’ll hit the top.

We’re also trying something new this month – we’ve created a video preview highlighting all of the titles you’ll receive as a Plus member, so give it a look and let me know what you think in the comments below!

Hol-ly crap! That is an EXCELLENT PS3 lineup! BioShock Infinite is, of course, acclaimed (time to actually break into the first, huh?), DmC is, attested by others, a kickin’ game, and Brothers seems to be a frontrunner for this year’s “well, that’s in the same ballpark as Journey” range (ah, Journey…!).

Don’t have a PS4, so no really give or take on Don’t Starve. Don’t have a Vita, either, so none on…whatever that is *scrolls up* Smart as….

As for PSP, eh, there’s so damn many Worms titles, I’d’ve been better with somethin’ else (just, not a PvP-centric fighter, eh?).

Those are epic news!

But I am looking for a place to “file my complain” about Sony closing multiplayer for Resistance 1,2 & 3, and Gran Turismo 5…

Resistance 3 and GT5 have been out for less than 4 years, I payed for all DLC on GT5 and now it gets plugged out…

Okay this is really annoying lately…i buy stuff when it goes on sale then a month ,or so later it comes up as free. I bought Bioshock on sale for 13.99 ,and i got DmC when it was on sale prior to that. Same happen with a few months prior to that when i bought Borderlands 2 ,and it became free.

I’m getting sick of grabbing something on sale thinking i’m getting a good deal on top of paying 17.99 every 3 months for my plus ,and then finding that another month is filled with a game or 2 i already just bought on sale whether its a plus discount sale ,or a regular sale. Sleeping Dogs was another case of that.

I think for now on unless its something that i know rarely ever if at all goes on sale or something i really really want bad enough. i think im just going to hold off buying a lot of stuff on the ps store ,and just pay for my plus ,and get my games as they come through there.

The line up is good ,and appreciate they are getting better quality games in there ,but i can’t be the only one that is going through the same thing. Makes you afraid to purchase anything.

Awesome!! I was sad to miss lasts weeks sale, but I’m feeling very excited about January’s line up! Bioshock Infinite is easily my favorite games this year and I’ve been curious about the DmC reboot. Thanks again!

By the way, I’m absolutely loving my PS Vita! I kept holding off thinking it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but I’m happy to announce that I was wrong. I am surprised to say this, but I may like it just as much as my PS3… Maybe even more since it travels well.

The amount of PS4s are decreasing and being traded like stocks on Wall Street, while the Xbox One’s supplies are at the point of saturation. And when you ask Sony when there will be a supply shipped to stores, all you get is an “I dunno” with shrugged shoulders. That’s getting a bit annoying and it’s making me reconsider my choice to get a PS4. Or get a system at all. I have a Wii U and it’s pretty awesome.

Perhaps I don’t need either system.

Anyone have anything to say about this?

Again, great PS3 IGC list but the Vita selection has really been pretty poor lately, with the exceptions of Soul Sacrifice and Oddworld. Before that, we have to go back several months to see the most recent strong Vita release (Zero Escape). I know the retail selection for the Vita overall isn’t great but come on PSN, let’s have some REAL titles for a change, not some B-level stuff that could be played on the PSP. Don’t get me wrong, ‘Hotline Miami’ is a cool little low-res game but how about some HD-caliber Vita games that really push the envelope of what the system can do? (and not just Uncharted, which has been there forever).

How about-
Unit 13
Sly Cooper
Persona 4 Golden
Killzone Mercenary
Dragon’s Crown

Is that too much to ask? Really hoping 2014 is the year Vita owners get the kind of outstanding content PS3 owners have been getting for awhile now from PSN, and not just some stuff we’ll play for 5 minutes and then click DELETE.

This is by far the best Ps Plus month for me. I have been using the service ever since i got hooked on the TWD episodes last year which i played through a trial version of Ps Plus – but i have never been so appreciative of a single months offerings as i am right now. I had been expecting DMC since a while now, but Bioshock? I didn’t see that coming, and it makes for an incredible surprise.

I haven’t played DMC or Bioshock Infinite yet, and i have been waiting to get my hands on them ever since they were released – January will be a great month to be a Ps Plus subscriber. I already played Brothers though, it’s a brilliant game that more people need to play.

Now if we can get AC III in Feb, that would be equally amazing, keeping the 2014 NA version of Ps Plus on a consistently good start.

I never commented here before, but i was compelled to show my appreciation for the freebies of Jan, is there a way we can have titles up for consideration via voting or something; for the upcoming months of Ps Plus?

In the video, I’m pretty sure you showed Worms Revolution instead of Worms Battle Islands. In fact, I’d say i’m certain you showed the wrong game. That’s kind of an important thing to get right.

Guys, if you keep hitting it out of the park, we’re gonna run out of balls. Really though, nice.

The PS3 list is fantastic, though I’m still feeling blase about the Vita’s. I can’t blame you for that; the system just does not have a lot of games, something I hope will be remedied sooner rather than later. The system has so much potential, but we’re just not seeing anything for it. The only games I’m looking forward to in the future are Final Fantasy X/X-2. I hope more companies start working with the system… agh.

Fantastic selection. I love getting games like DMC, Brothers, and Don’t Starve; games many people likely would not have bought but should really play. It’s also great getting bigger games like Borderlands 2 and Bioshock for those who haven’t played them. I on the other hand already have, so I’m glad we oftentimes get the more niche and unknown titles as well. The games I’d otherwise miss are always my favourites of the IGC – like Spec Ops, Sleeping Dogs, and Hitman.

By the way, up until recently, I haven’t been interested in the PS Vita. However, I now think the IGC for the Vita is a great gateway into it. With all the games I’ve claimed over the year from Plus, it’s getting harder and harder to justify not buying one. Because of the IGC, I’ve made the decision to buy one, which I think is pretty cool.

Wow, talk about opening the year with a bang :). Can’t believe you guys are giving us Bioshock Infinite, DMC and Brothers so soon, all three came out not that long ago. Bioshock is wonderful, DMC is a bit odd with it being a reboot and all but its still looks fun, and Brothers sounds really interesting.

While the Vita stuff isn’t that great, after three great months of quality Vita content between Rayman Origins, GTA PSP, Hotline Maimi, Sane Mora, Oddworld Strangers Wrath, Soul Sacrifice and Sonic Racing, its going to be hard to top that :). Worms sounds like fun and Smart As might scratch that Brain Age itch.

Nice job with that video and thank you for kicking the year off to a great start. Hope you guys at the Sony Blog had a happy holiday and I look forward to another year of awesome free games :).

People seriously need to stop complaining about PSP games showing up. Honestly it’s great for people like me who already own the game on-disc and can’t play them on my Vita. It’s also really nice that I can play some games I never got to buy (looking your way Final Fantasy Tactics.). Even if the PSP games weren’t there it’s not like some other game is going to take its spot. So it’s not like you’re gonna get another game anyway.
