PlayStation Now Streaming Game Service Coming this Summer

PS Now

Today, at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, we announced that PlayStation Now (PS Now), our new streaming game service, will be available in the US this summer. With PlayStation Now, you will be able to stream popular hits and classic games from the PS3 library, first on PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by PS Vita.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 US models of Sony’s BRAVIA TV lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices.

Leveraging Gaikai’s advanced cloud-based technology, PlayStation Now will allow you to:

  • Play video games instantly across multiple devices, similar to the way you might stream TV, movies, and music.
  • Stream full games to all of your compatible PlayStation devices including PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita as well as non-PlayStation devices, beginning with 2014 BRAVIA TV models and expanding to numerous other Internet-connected devices.
  • Always play the most updated version of your game. With games hosted in the cloud, you can take your game with you – just log in with your Sony Entertainment Network account on a compatible device and your games and saved progress will be easily available.

We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.

PS Now will begin a Beta program in the US at the end of January with an expected full roll-out in the US this summer. Be sure to check the PlayStation.Blog regularly for more updates on the PS Now service.

  • awesome:)…need high speed internet connection…

  • Please tell me I don’t have to pay for games I have already purchased. I have spent thousands of $$$$$ on PSN since it launched. Not sure why PS4 is not backwards compatible. I should be able to download PS3 games to a USB hard drive.

  • Am I the only one here who thinks that this makes the PS4 and all other hardware obsolete? Why even bother with console games anymore when you don’t need a console?

  • I would like to ask would i be able to play grand theft auto 5 on ps4 with gaikai ?

  • I would like to ask can i play my grand theft auto 5 ps3 cd on ps4 using gaikai ?

  • WOW! Great news Sony! However, I have a question. When will Asia be able to experience this service? Will parts of Asia like Singapore have to wait long for such a service? I am also aware that some services/titles are available in the US compared to Asia. Any chances those will be brought over as well?

  • I am absolutely sold on the idea. Good news just get better. Sign me up!

  • TLOU streaming to Vita? YES! JUST, YES!
What other games will I be able to stream?!

  • If i’d be able to play God of War3,Motorstorm apocalypse,Warhawk and Folklore on my vita then i’m sold.

  • I was wondering what you guys’d be doing with the Gaikai acquisition, and I must say, I’m impressed. It’s surpassed all the theories I had! I do have two questions though. Firstly, will Playstation users be charged for the services if they plan to use them? (Just as I’ve already paid for PS Plus on my PS4, and wondering if you guys’ll be setting me back more per month!) And secondly, will there be a feature of redeeming games bought physically for previous generations so I can stream them to my shiny new console? Or has this been ruled out?

    Many Thanks!

  • I would so pay anything for this, if it came to Windows. Also if it eventually included PS4 and Vita games too. It would be so epic to play even thing in one place on my PC. To have my PC games and PlayStation games together on my PC would be awesome.

  • SIGN ME UP PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • umm so what is the recommended network environment(you know home network), and will this ability be usable over at&t’s 3g service(rather is there a possibility for a 4g variant of the vita, I’ve been meaning to ask this for awhile now…)

  • The number of times Kaz said “Wow” makes me think he’s responsible for a new drinking game…

  • Can’t wait for it! This is why ive also be a sony fan.

  • Well, what about Europe?

  • IMO I am not impressed by this service for the vita. They should had rather invested on localizing massive AAA japanese vita titles.

  • That’s awesome news. Now that you would allow me to stream old media to my PS4 why wouldn’t i be able to play old media on my new system without paying for another subscription?

  • i wanna know if games like infinity and skylanders would be able to work on the cloud with hooking up the base to the PS4

  • This is how you fully win the hearts and minds of your supporters, people. Make awesome things and allow imagination to take hold. This is great stuff, Sony. And so early in the year to announce what we’ve all been waiting for! Thank ye kindly.

  • If the pricing model is right I’m definitely in on this! Would especially love to revisit older games that I played on the PS1, PS2, etc. years ago. Thanks Sony, keep up the great work for us gamers.

  • So is the streaming service going to offer some classic PSOne games or PS2 games??? I saw it said popular games and PS3 titles… just curious if any true classics can be streamed…

That would be pretty tight if that will be the case!! I mean either way this whole idea is awesome!!!

WAY TO GO SONY!!!! SIGN ME UP!

  • Will it have sony published games only or will there be 3rd party support?

  • Why isnt Sony pushing Vita more? I haven’t seen a single commercial ad anywhere. The system needs to be on everyone’s must have/own list.

  • Looks pretty cool…I just need to see the look of that price for a subscription.

  • Let me guess, I have to buy/rent the games I already on on hard disk to play it on Vita/PS4 or whatever?
Another thing that bugs me, are we limited to our own national Playstation Store content? I am playing a lot of japanese games from the japanese PSN. I’d love to access the games I already own via any PSN account on any PSN account on PSVita/PS4.

  • Questions I have are:

    1. How much is the service going to cost me?
    2. Will there be some type of bonus if you are a PS+ member?

    3. How can I take part in the BETA???

  • if you had read the article, you would have known it’s either rent each game individually or a one time subscription fee for unlimited access, I’m thinking they meant once a year sub

  • If the “graphics” or quality of the games are going to take a hit, it’s not really worth it to me when i could just plug in my ps3.

  • Please bring Beyond to ps now, I had to sell my ps3 to afford the ps4 so I never got to finish the game, in fact I never even got to play bio shock, or the last of us, can’t wait. Oh and my fiancée really wants to play sheep raider for ps1, and I also think classic ps1 and ps2 games would be a great idea, please tell me you’ll get sheep raider on there, Wiley coyote is the best.

  • 1.) Will PS Now work like the (small) PS3 to PS4 upgrade program allowing us to purchase for a small price and play with the disc inserted (for those of us who own physical PS3 discs)?

2.) Will we have free access to already owned digital purchases? I’ve seen this question asked a number of times, but I haven’t seen it answered yet.

  • SIGN ME UP for the beta.

i just hope this beta is handled better then the KZM beta where people who had nothing to do with sony/ vitas got into the beta leaving out tons of people who did and or had plus.

  • I really really hope that this service can eventually make it’s way worldwide rather then be relegated only to USA.

  • 200 Mbps connection here, bring it on! (happy to beta test the high quality end of the streaming side, with a fast connection and all :) )

  • This sounds promising. Especially for Vita owners who can stream PS3 or its predecessors. Curious on the subscription do you plan on making like a PS+ Unlimited like Boogie2988 suggested or will it be separate all together. Cause I can tell you if this is successful I’d gladly pay for a PS+ Unlimited subscription.

Only thing I’m concerned about is bandwidth issues or the fact we still may not get PS1 or PS2 games cause of copyright issues.

  • If this is going to be a different subscription from PSPlus, I hope they give us Plus subscribers a big discount. But if they add it to what PSPlus subscribers already have, it would be the bomb. I wouldn’t even mind buying digital copies of my old PS & PS2 games, but its a different story when it comes to PS3 games, Id like to be able to use my physical games without any added fees. I already paid for PSPlus + PSNow (if its going to be a separate subscription), I’m not paying extra for “backwards compatibility” like what they are doing with games like NBA2k14, COD, BF4

  • Any future for streaming PlayStation now on PC?

  • PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. Sign me up for the beta

  • I want to be in the beta (I have Ps3, Ps4, and Ps Vita) lets do this! where do i sign up?

  • Will we be able to live broadcast the games we stream on Twitch or USTREAM on PS4 with PS NOW?

  • I love this advancement direction Sony is taking I seen many repeated questions and answer and I may have over looked this question. is there a way to keep up with this beta trial? and I hope you will offer more then FPS games during beta I am a big Tiger Woods fan and would love to experience this on my PS4 and Vita. and hope that online game play is the same as on my PS3.
    thanks,
    greg f.

  • So if you don’t have a TV that connects to internet this is a no-go? Aw :(

  • the even better news is the Dish app, you can save money and use the ps3 and ps4 as a joey for your hopper!!!

  • sign me up for beta

  • Are we ever going to get to play PS2 Classics on Vita? I’d really love to play GTA San Andreas on this thing…

  • Will this service be fully functional and accessible with PS VITA?….If so, PS VITA owner will be extremely happy.

  • I’ve owned just about every playstation and gaming device for Sony. I can tell you right now this is just a money grabbing service and will not be “great” for those who already have bought (and still have a ) ps3, ps4 and ps+ games. I bet this is an additional fee even if you have the game already. Sony comes out with new proprietary memory cards for every hand held which should tell you what they care about your convenience and money already spent.

If this was someway added to PS+ for current subscribers and you could add a small increase to access your current games(maybe a one time $2.99 fee (with a random disc check every now and again to prevent selling after). I would be on board. If it is yet another $10-$20 service, Sony can get bent and watch this fade into uselessness after the newness wears off. How does this not cannibalize the PS3? Watch retailers throw a fit shortly.

And I wish we would get some real responses not talking head trash like “laser focus” such business speak nonsense.

Add value for customers or fail Sony.

  • What about gamers that own a PS4 and several PS3 digital titles. Will we be able to use the streaming service to achieve backwards compatibility with the PS3 at no additional cost or do we have to keep both consoles, otherwise our previous investment is lost and gone?

  • I’ve been trying to read through this blog to find my answers, but I can’t really find it, or even if anyone has asked clearly.

Between the games I’ve purchased on PSN and those that I have downloaded (or have been added to my download list through my PS+ memebership), I own (or at least have access to) about 120 digital PSN titles.

Will I be able to stream these games (“my” games), without paying for a PlayStation Now subscription, or having to rent them?

Example #1, I purchased the Last of Us on PSN, will I be able to stream this game without a subscription or paying a rental fee?

Example #2, as a PS+ member who downloaded DmC yesterday as part of my PS+ membership, would I be able to stream DmC without a subscription or paying a rental fee?

If not, I feel more than a little bit slighted. I feel like the ability to stream our PSN titles via a similar service was previous advertised as a something that would eventually be available to PS4 owners, possibly, as a way to justify its lack of backwards compatability.

Any information regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Here’s my questions, which I haven’t seen anybody else ask….
when does it launch in scee land, and more importantly….Will I be able to stream games from my already extensive download list, or will I have to purchase the titles again?
If the answer’s ‘I can use my library on my vita, as long as the titles in the playstation now range’. I’m in!
    If the answer is ‘no’….why?
