PlayStation Now Streaming Game Service Coming this Summer

PS Now

Today, at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, we announced that PlayStation Now (PS Now), our new streaming game service, will be available in the US this summer. With PlayStation Now, you will be able to stream popular hits and classic games from the PS3 library, first on PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by PS Vita.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 US models of Sony’s BRAVIA TV lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices.

Leveraging Gaikai’s advanced cloud-based technology, PlayStation Now will allow you to:

  • Play video games instantly across multiple devices, similar to the way you might stream TV, movies, and music.
  • Stream full games to all of your compatible PlayStation devices including PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita as well as non-PlayStation devices, beginning with 2014 BRAVIA TV models and expanding to numerous other Internet-connected devices.
  • Always play the most updated version of your game. With games hosted in the cloud, you can take your game with you – just log in with your Sony Entertainment Network account on a compatible device and your games and saved progress will be easily available.

We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.

PS Now will begin a Beta program in the US at the end of January with an expected full roll-out in the US this summer. Be sure to check the PlayStation.Blog regularly for more updates on the PS Now service.

Couple of things I would love to say to add to this lengthy discussion:

SHUT UP!
The service is not out yet and I can already read many complaining about their games not transferring, or being free or give me everything with PS+.

It was an announcement. Can you guys be a little more patient.
Note: This is not addressed to all. You know who you are.

@101, emulation is never happening, it is too costly and simply not worth it. better off forgetting that pipe dream.

it should be free to the ps plus members. none ps plus members should pay and i hope they don’t try to over charge people to play old games when the systems should be backwards compatible anyway . i like idea tho would like to play bully on the PS4 or even smack down from the PS1. sign me up for the beta Tevin-The-KIng is ready.

thank you guys – i’ve left my share of comments the last couple weeks asking for the ability to play games like Borderlands 2, Last of Us and Arkham Origins on my PS4. this is like Christmas 2.0.

awesome news. greatness truly awaits. PS3 streaming, Destiny, Uncharted 4, it’s going to be an amazing year. #GameOn

I am so excited for PS Now! I hope the available PS3 library will be robust and not lame like the WiiU Virtual Console where they dribble out games every SO often. Sony…….this is GIGANTIC if you do this right! I cannot wait to learn more. Will this be a part of the PS+ subscription or a new subscription? Thanks for this great news! Playstation Nation is the only way to play! Great to be a part of innovation like this!

I would really like that if you had Playstation PLUS and owned such games, that would be available via subscription or rent, digitally, there would be either a massive discount, or you had the game via the streaming service. I began buying into the digital distribution back on the PSP, and it paid off for when the VITA no longer supported UMDs.

Let me know that my decision to stick to digital is worth it. The Last of Us is digital, Playstation All Stars, God of War Ascension, GTA V, AC 3 and Black Flag, Killzone Shadowfall…And that is mostly without the free Plus games. If we own it, can we play it “Now”. That’s all I ask.

Thanks Playstation. I’m loving this service, at least in my head. I hope I get to love it come January and this Summer as well.

Idk about this, the only thing I could say at this moment is: Please don’t touch our beloved PS+, I don’t want that PS+ to be changed to impulse people to subscribe to PSNow (gaikai streaming system).
And guys, don’t tell me that these services have nothing in common, even when PSNow at the core is an streaming service, you can buy digital games through it too. So please, don’t remove my amazing 75%off deals that PS+already already has. Thanks.

I am SOOOO very excited for this. I think it will only elevate the already amazing qualities and the fun factor of the Vita.

1) How do we sign up for the beta (or is there even an opportunity to do so)?

2) Have there been any talks about added perks and benefits for being a PS Plus member when this service hits the streets?

Thank you so much for all the entertainment you provide us, Sony. You are amazing!

Awesome news, can’t wait to see it’s implementation! As a retail electronics associate I’ve been telling people the possibilities sony could do with gaikai and when they’ve asked if the ps4 is backwards compatible I’ve been telling them not “yet.” Hopefully I can play The Legend of Dragoon sometime soon on my PS4, that would be amazing. Would love to know pricing details and benefits to PS plus members but I’ll take this news for now! Great news alongside the sales numbers of PS4, really shows how much sony has changed the PS4 vs the initial PS3, what a turnaround this console generation! I was very surprised at the announcement that you’ll also be bringing this service to non-sony devices like the tablets and smartphones. I’ll be picking up a vita for this and the remote play feature of the PS4 for sure!

So many questions, though a lot were answered already so I’ll just put in my doubts:

1) You have ignored this question a lot so I’ll ask it again: will we have to pay AGAIN for our already owned digital games?

2) If we pay subscription rather than just buy games separately, then will the trophies still pop? I imagine so, but would like to know

3) When will you announce the subscription fee for this? Cause I am 99% sure this would be separate from plus but it might be worth it if it’s a reasonable price

Doubt you will answer this, but thanks anyway for the announcement. Hope it’s as good as it sounds and hope to get in the beta

What if I want to play games through the service PS Now, which I already bought digitally?

Do I need to pay extra? If then, it’ll be better for me to buy a PS3 console again.

This sounds like an awesome idea for PlayStation games to be available on multiple platforms. I do have one question, though. If you’ve purchase PS1/PS2 Classics on PSN, then will those purchases be honored when you access PlayStation Now. It wouldn’t be a deal breaker since I have a PS3 with my PS1 Classics. However no one wants to buy the same game twice. It would be nice to access PS1 games on my phone or tablet without paying extra when PS Now makes it to those devices.

+ Icestar10 on January 7th, 2014 at 2:51 pm said:

This is really interesting. I want to learn more. :)

I was hoping though that we would be able to access our PSN titles through the cloud. I am disappointed though that our PSN games does not carry over to the PS4 and are stuck to one specific hardware. I just don’t see a whole lot of reasons to go digital for that reason.

I think the only reason to have digital is to always have them there and to follow us on the newest device. Ethier way, I look forward to learn more about PlayStation Now.

Here’s my first feedback:

1. Allow PS4 owner’s to play PS3 games for Free if the gamer still owns the Blu-ray disc version of that PS3 game as long as that game is on PlayStation Now service. (The disc would act like a key showing that gamer owns that game and should not be charged a Fee to play a existing owned game. (I can understand a gamer being charged a fee to rent or play the game unlimited times for as long as they like if that gamer pays the monthly fee and does not own the game already.

2. If a gamer owns a Digital game on PS4, PS3, PSN, PS2, PS1 and other supported console’s like PS Vita and that game is on PlayStation Now and the gamer already pays for PS Plus does he/she still have to play the service fee to play on PlayStation Now even though he/she owns the game and is paying PlayStation Plus?

Will this apply to PSN games? Also, what if we have purchased games digitally already (for example: The Last of Us)? Will we able to use this service with games we have already purchased? Or will we have to pay the subscription fee to access these already purchased games?

Thanks Sid!
