How We Created Kaz Hirai’s CES ’14 Keynote in Real-Time

At Media Molecule we’re in love with real-world materials, particularly ones that allow creative expression (just look at our games!), so it was great to be asked to get involved in attempting to make a ‘physical keynote’ for CES as part of Kaz Hirai’s presentation. A presentation where the slides would be made live in front of the camera to present the memories, influences, insights and dreams Kaz would be expressing on stage. A keynote with extremely realistic physics — because everything was real and physical!

So thanks to a 4K camera, a bunch of motors to control the camera, a very talented film crew, and a giant scroll of paper for it all to point at, our stage was set!

It was such a buzz doing it all live, the three of us (Karen, Tim and myself) trying to match what we were doing with Kaz’s speech, whether that was painting, drawing, collaging or sliding real Sony products onto the paper scene. I think it really represents how personal technology can and should be. Phones are made to be held and used, cameras are designed for capturing and sharing beautiful memories, and games give us experiences that make us laugh and shout and fall off the couch.

But the most exciting part for me (apart from meeting Vince Gilligan OMG) was seeing the video of the Mm team, showing the sometimes hard roads we take to make games we really love and want to pass on to others. I had real goosebumps seeing that video playing on the backstage monitors, a little bit of homesickness, missing the team back in the UK, but a whole lot of pride for what they’ve all achieved!

  • That’s incredible!!! I had no idea!

  • If only Kaz held Vita 2000 at CES and announced it.

  • SONY <3

  • Heh, at first I wondered who those people in background were. Like, “did Sony hire a group of hand models or something?” =)

  • Wow, it’s crazy to think that all of that was live. That’s super creative, and I find it so cool that you guys would do something as unique as that.

  • The Keynote backdrop was so cool. I wish I was doing something like that. Anywho good job with the Keynote Kaz & the MM Team….

  • Honestly, I was mesmerized by the moving, evolving background and almost felt bad for Kaz since it stole so much attention. I didn’t realize it was all live, even though they showed you all backstage. I thought it was not only the most creative display at a speech, but also the most non-corporate. Let’s face it, Sony is one of the biggest corporations in the world. It’s CES, the focus of new, dazzling tech. And how does MegaCorp present its keynote? With a handmade, amusing, and very human artistry. Brilliant. More effective than all the explosions in the world.

Media Molecule always brings it, in your unique, sweet, quiet way.

  • when did Kaz say the ps will be able to play mp3s, cds, usb storage media files, playstation brand bluetooth headsets, and use bluetooth remotes?

  • That was live?!?!?! Wow. Even before knowing that, I was convinced that Media Molecule was the most creative game developer in the industry. But that was live?!?!?! Wow. I cannot wait to see what they do with the PlayStation 4 & I need a Vita for Tearaway.

    But that was live?!?!?! Wow.

  • I was loving the background imagery while Kaz and others spoke. As it was going on I was thinking it reminds me of the opening of LIttleBigPlanet and there it is someone from Media Molecule running things in the background! :)

It was really fun to watch that background while listening to Kaz and others speak.

  • Sony is the best.

You should post Andrew House’s conference.

  • Now that technology

  • Media Molecule for the win! o/

  • Man that’s awesome, thanks for sharing. Definitely was a revelation to know it was made live.
Media Molecule is truly one of the best creative teams out there nowadays.

  • OOoooo

you know what you should set up…

THE REDBULL X races in GT6.
I don’t appreciate being coerced into downloading a 2gb update to add new races and then not being allowed to play those races because “Event will be available January 1st 2014.”….

Do you know what the date is? It’s a week after the 1st of january. You should be ashamed, first Nintendo now you how pathetic. Those 4 million people who bought a PS4 must be really retarded to continue doing business with you.

  • Wow! Thanks MM! Wow!

  • I thought the title was ‘How We Created Kaz Hirai’ and was glad the truth that he’s a robot is out, but I guess it’s still not confirmed.

Bad joke aside, you’ve done a fantastic job with it.

  • Only Sony could do something as creative as that. Also much respect to Sony for greenlighting offbeat titles like Puppeteer, Tearaway, Little Big Planet, Beyond, Tokyo Jungle, Journey, Heavy Rain, Unfinished Swan, etc.

Sony has got its ‘KANDO’ mojo right.

  • Really awesome and creative, like other people on here, i had no idea that was done live during CES.

MM has amazing creativity and i am very excited to see what they have in store for us in the future.

And anyone who has a Vita and does not have Tearaway, GET IT!!! The happiness and random giddy moments it brought me throughout playing is really incomparable to a lot of games ive experienced, and i have played a TON of games during my 15+ years of solid gaming.

  • There was one moment when I was watching the video in the back and something struck me as odd. It made me thing, “how is this going along with his speech so well? Is it live? Is it a bunch of smaller videos pieced together at perfect times to make it seem it’s live? It can’t be live, that would be too hard to pull off….” LOL

Seems my hunch was right. The should have played with the fact that it was live more by interacting with the people in the back. Also They should have showed the screen in the shot all the time instead of zooming in on the person talking and cutting out all the hard work that was done. (… unless they did and I just don’t remember it right. lol)

  • Sony is the best 4get the rest!!
