New PS Vita Model Confirmed for US, Included in Borderlands 2 Bundle
Update: An earlier version of this post stated that Borderlands 2 on PS Vita is playable with up to three of your friends. We checked in with the SCEA Third Party Production team, who confirmed that while they strived to include four-player co-op in the game, they made a decision late in their development cycle to focus on providing the best two-player-only co-op experience possible. As a result, the maximum co-operative player count for Borderlands 2 on PS Vita is capped at two.
New PS Vita Model Confirmed for US, Included in Borderlands 2 Bundle

Hey Vita fans, we’ve got some great news to share with you today. Since its reveal at the Tokyo Game Show, many of you have asked when the new PlayStation Vita model will be coming to North America. Today, we’re excited to announce the new PS Vita Wi-Fi model (PCH-2000 series) will be available via the Borderlands 2 Limited Edition PlayStation Vita Bundle this Spring. The bundle will include the new slim PS Vita system in black, the first-person role-playing shooter hit Borderlands 2 with six DLC packs, and an 8GB PS Vita memory card – all for $199.99 (MSRP).

The new PS Vita Wi-Fi model is approximately 20-percent slimmer and 15-percent lighter than the original version, with rounded edges to fit comfortably in your hands. The new model comes with 1GB of internal memory built into the system, and its 5-inch front touchscreen has a new high-definition liquid crystal display (LCD), giving you a high quality image that provides the same deep, immersive gaming experience that’s at the core of the PS Vita system.

You won’t need to worry about purchasing an extra PS Vita memory card to play Borderlands 2 out of the box – the limited edition bundle comes with an 8GB memory card. Also, the battery life of the new PS Vita system has increased to 4-6 hours of game play, up from 3-5 hours in the current model, and about 7 hours of video play, up from 5 hours from the current model. Extra juice for those long game sessions!

Many of you have waited patiently for Borderlands 2 to come to the PS Vita system, and we’re pleased to bring it to you bundled with the new PS Vita model. The game utilizes the PS Vita system’s unique front touchscreen and rear touchpad feature so you can easily zoom and pan on maps, manage inventory, inspect items, and more. You can shoot and loot through Pandora with a PS Vita-toting friend via Infrastructure online play, and you can also cross save your progress with your PS3. As an added bonus, Borderlands 2 for PS Vita includes six downloadable content (DLC) packs: Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty, Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage, Psycho Character Class, Mechromancer Character Class, Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 1 and the Collector’s Edition Pack.

If you haven’t played Borderlands 2 yet, the storyline follows six vault hunters through the world of Pandora in an attempt to defeat the notorious Handsome Jack of Hyperion Corporation. The Borderlands 2 Limited Edition PlayStation Vita Bundle is great for those who are new to the game, or if you’re already a fan, it’s a great way to experience Borderlands 2 again right in the palm of your hands.

As with all PlayStation hardware, the PS Vita system has evolved in so many ways in the last two years. At the launch of PS4, we introduced PS Vita system’s innovative Remote Play feature, making it the ultimate companion device for the PS4 system. We know how much all of you PS4 owners have enjoyed it – I know I have. Additionally, we recently demonstrated its compatibility with PlayStation Now, our new streaming game service that leverages cloud-based technology, allowing you to play a variety of PlayStation 3 games on the PS Vita system when the service launches later this year. And let’s not forget the great games launching on PS Vita this year – including Minecraft, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, God of War Collection and The Walking Dead Season 2. Our goal is to bring you more games to enjoy with our most powerful handheld console, and we look forward to announcing new titles for the PS Vita system this year.

So, are you ready to shoot-and-loot with the new PS Vita model? Let us know in the comments!

  • My return to PlayStation begins with this bundle. Hopefully it launches on 3/25, the first spring Tues.!! :-)

  • hmm ok nice. but i already have a vita and cant afford this bundle (not that i want it) so when is BL2 coming to the vita?

  • I would prefer Sony to continue manufacturing the OLED models and give its customers the option.

I’ve considered purchasing a used Vita as a backup instead of upgrading if my current one dies. I’m curious if the value of the old models will go up once they’ve become rare. Guess I really fell in love with that screen.

  • at last the new ps vita slim come out…???
i’ve been waiting since tokyo launching & until this last january 2014 playstation only release this slim vita for UK only :( , but now i’m so happy to hear this news, ps vita slim US version with borderland 2 bundle.
actually i more like the bundle with final fantasy X / X2 but it’s ok.
just tell me the date to pre order…???

  • Cross-save? Does this mean I will be able to continue my Ps3 Borderlands 2 game on my Vita? And vice-versa?

  • Dig it! Big news for the Vita today. I’ll withhold judgement on that LCD screen until I see it in person, but I imagine it is up to snuff. Now about that little Vita TV box…bring it West, Sony. I want to play Soul Sacrifice (+Delta, eventually) on the big screen.

  • Awesome Sony!!!

This should be the way going forward.

    First Party Exclusives
    and
    Third Party Multiplats

The Vita is powerful enough to run games like Borderlands 2 so it doesn’t deserve half-assed low budget spin-offs.

So please just port games like GTAV, MGSV, Skyrim, Call of Duty: Ghost, and COD 2014 instead of money hatting low budget exclusives it doesn’t deserve.

Spin-offs are for consoles that can’t run the full games.

And companies like Rockstar, Activision, Bethesda, and Activision don’t really make exclusives so it’s better to just get the full games on the Vita since it’s powerful enough to run big games.

Looking forward to more big games like this instead of half-assed spin-offs.

  • This is the Vita I am getting! Been holding off for quite sometime and I knew I would eventually get one and Borderlands 2 now that they are going to be a bundle (with an 8GB card too) for 199.99 I am sold. Now where do I preorder this bad boy?

  • I should have waited but oh well I will still get borderlands 2 just not the slim vita, not now anyways. Now all you have to do is announce the Vita TV in North America and we are golden

  • YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont own a vita but i know what its capable of. killzone on the go now im just waiting for COD zombies portable

  • I think its a good time to buy it, cause of the bundle that it comes with. Good job Sony!

  • Damn thats sad…. I already owned the vita but now with the new model coming out i most likely might get it. Since my vita is technically still new, i’ll trade it for a good price.

Oh and I imported a white with lime green PSVita and love the extra hour or so out of it. Plus the weight of it too.
Also got a 64gb card while I was at it.

  • Did that say you can play vita games through ps4 on your tv now?

  • I was going to wait for this model to come out but now I’m glad I bought the OLED Vita. I love it.

This new model definitely has its perks though, so, for anyone still on the fence, you’ve now got yet another great reason to join the club.

  • Please, for the love of god, release Borderlands 2 in physical form with the DLC packs on the cartridge. I probably won’t even buy the game if it’s digital only taking up a sixth of my 32 GB memory card. Release retail copies and I will buy it day one.

  • I also say that different colors for the vita its good in the customers eyes… believe me that more colors, more sales… bring the colors to NA

  • Excellent news! I’ll definitely pick the game up (already have a Vita) at some point.
Glad some of the DLC are included, will the other DLC packs be available from the PSN as well? I’d like to play some of the Headhunters Packs, or Tiny Tina’s Assault on the move!

  • Not a fan of FPS’ games, but am looking forward to the extended battery life.

  • I really love my Vita, but could we please get some more new RPGs and heavy hitters? I’m looking forward to FFX/X-2, but it is still an enhanced port of a thirteen year old game. Persona 4 Golden and Atelier Totori Plus have given me tons of hours of playtime, as well as Uncharted Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush (thanks, PS+!).

I’m not a big fan of fighting games or racing games, and first person shooters are heads or tails for me. More Adventure Games and story-driven games would be fantastic! Thank you!

  • No thanks, I think I’ll pass on the no frills version of the Vita. The only good feature of this one is the in-built storage. In fact, I’ll be buying another original model with OLED and a much better quality build. This one looks like cheap plastic. The switch to LCD is also a stupid decision.

The fact is, instead of focusing on making another model, what you should”ve been doing is focusing on MORE GAMES. The problem was never the hardware – it was the SOFTWARE. How come you can manage to get he WWS to develop high budget IP’s for PS4, but you can’t get any to develop any for the Vita – the platform that needs it the most? How come you can’t attract third-party support?

I wouldn’t mind having this model as an “entry-leve”l console for younger kids etc, but because you’re stopping production of the original model and replacing it with this “cheap” one is something I have no interest in.

  • It’s settled. I know what I’m spending part of my tax return on now. I was torn between the Vita and the 3DS XL but with the PS4 streaming and the new Vita I just can’t pass this up. Please Sony….take more of my money now!!

  • Sony needs to pay money and help those Japanese publishers to localize their games. Don’t forget that the PSP was a huge successful because of Japanese games.

pay Square Enix to port those smartphone Final Fantasy (and Type-0) to the Vita. that company will bite your money as soon as you offer them.

Capcom may not want to make new Megaman but they might port all the classic 2D Megaman games to the Vita if you pay them.

help Namco Bandai to bring Tales series to the west.

you need to start paying money or the Vita will not going anywhere.

and bring the Vita TV to the west too.

  • So it’s priced the same without OLED!? WTF??

  • Cross Play functionality, huh ? Cross Save is cool, but cross play its even c00ler! Please add it ;)

  • LOL
So this was the slim tease?
To think that NA would only be getting it now. No offense but I totally thought it was already released.

  • I know this is not the place, but as someone mentioned flower and its Vita Port, I would like to know if it would be possible for you to update Flower on the Vita, allowing analog nub controls. You see, on a portable, motion controls are not a good ideia. It makes no sense to control something by moving the Vita, if the screen is moving as well. This makes it not only awful to play, but impossible on outdoor situations, such as public transportations. Then we have touch screen controls… that simply do not work adequately. So the game is almost unplayable. With a lot of practice it is possible to control using the touch screen, but it is hardly enjoyable. The perfect solution for the Vita would be to just use the analog sticks to control, kinda like in Katamari Damacy.

  • Listen to @Monterossa (comment 173).

The PSP was the portable it was thanks in great part to games from Capcom, Square, Konami and the like.

    PS Vita needs this support.

It needs to have a localised Final Fantasy Type-0, regarded as one of the best FF in recent memory in Japan.

It needs to play Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.

It needs to have access to classics from Megaman series, even if through PSX Classics and PSP (No Megaman Powered Up!)

It needs to have access to Strider, it would be perfect on the Vita. PSX Classics would also be nice.

It should have access to a Street Fighter IV. Even 3DS got one.

It needs to play Crash Bandicoot trilogy.

It needs to play Metal Gear Portable Ops.

It needs to play all the best games from PSX and PSP, as these are incentives for people who passed on the originals.

Get them to make games, help them, finance them, get the license and make the game locally and exclusive. PSP started slow but ended having a huge support in Japan, thanks in great part to Capcom’s Monster Hunter (lost to Nintendo) and Square’s awesome games (they suck at consoles now, but on PSP they were godly).

Make it happen Sony. Do it.

  • Dear sony of America release the other colors not just the black . I don’t know why you do these we like colors too not just japan . Maybe if you take a page form nintendo book on portable devices, Americans like color variation and don’t just release pink or white. the other colors green, blue, red , and grey. I want another vita but i don’t want black or white

  • Might get the game, since I already own a Vita.

I Hope that PSN Store will have a sale on Vita games to celebrate its anniversary later this month.

  • Biggest disappoinment is the screen. Every single reviewer has remarked about downgrading the screen yet Sony still did it. Just proves that Sony does not listen to its customers. *sigh*

I bought one when they were on sale but havent played much on it. I mainly got it for the remote play on PS4 but still havent gotten a PS4 due to lack of non-ported games. (which, by the way, every single reviewer has said about also and STILL nothing has been done to get games out – maybe you should have waited a year for release?)

Love the GoW1&2 coming out for Vita…I mean, I had them for PS2 then you dropped PS2 support on the PS3 so I had to rebuy them. Now you wont let PS3 work on PS4 (except the online thing that only works if you have access to true broadband) so I guess you will re-release them on the PS4 at some point too..?? Money grab anyone? sheesh.

    Still love my PS3 though

  • I don’t see any issue with the LCD. It’s even better than OLED because I saw many black spots on OLED when I play in dark room. that’s why I sold my old Vita after I bought the slim.

People just jumped on the bandwagon and keep bashing the LCD without any knowledge and they’re not even have the two Vitas to compare and judge them with their own eyes.

  • I’ve been waiting forever for the blue one to to come to the US… first the Sapphire Blue and now I guess I’ll wait for the blue Slim… though I wonder if I’ll ever get to own a blue Vita without paying a ton to import. ;_;

  • As much as I am excited for this bundle. I’ll have to hold off on it until a 64 GB memory card is announced. :(

  • Ew, Borderlands? Guess I’ll wait for a different bundle.

  • that’s a fxxking good deal mate ~
and we still need some big fxxking memory card for my game collection mate ~
    64 GB aint enough

  • Did I want the extended battery as I do?

  • Until memory card prices come down I will never buy one.

  • loving it!! i already have a vita white, and love it soo much. gonna buy this one for my wife and keep Borderlands for my self. quick question, “you can also cross save your progress with your PS3” guess i can use my PS3 Characters on the vita right? also would like to know if i can cross play with my ps3 friends.

and please, oh please get those damn memory card prices lower. they are just too ridiculously expensive. you will sell a ton more of Vitas if you just lower those damn memory cards

  • I have the Japanese PS Vita 2000 model. Sure, the LCD replaced the OLED screen, but the difference isn’t that big of a deal. After playing for awhile, you won’t even know there’s a difference unless you directly compare with the older Vita.

The bonus with the newer model is the longer battery life and the sleeker redesign. There is an obvious contrast in feel and size between the older and newer vita. After playing with the redesign, the older Vita feels clunky and heavy.

Yeah, it sucks that the OLED was replaced with the LCD. But again, it’s not that much of a difference.

  • I sometimes think to pick up a vita but the things holding me back is the whole memory card issue. In my eyes the ones you need are just way too expensive. I know with the plus offerings and a 8GB memory card is really not enough and to invest in a 64 or 32 GB is pretty pricey. Also I am not sure about this model yeah its good to see the vita at a price of $200 with a game and 8GB memory card but at the same time I am not sold that the LCD screen is better then the OLED. In my eyes the OLED is way brighter and more vivid while the new LCD is just a way to bring down cost and to sell it for a cheaper price.

  • About the 64 GB memory card, I bought mine from Amazon for $117 about a month ago. Had it here in 2 days. You don’t have to import from play asia if you don’t want to.

  • Also to answer other commenters’ concerns, the build quality doesn’t feel cheap by comparison. The back of the 2000 model has a nice matte finish (except for the back panel of course).

And I really can’t emphasize enough, the switch to LCD isn’t as big of a deal that some are making it out to be. I was skeptical about purchasing the 2000 model because of the switch to LCD, but you seriously don’t even notice a difference unless you directly compare side-by-side.

If you value battery life, the 2 hour increase is substantial. I hated always having my 1000 model plugged into the wall just because after a year or two the battery would drain so fast. Also, if you put the device into airplane mode, you can squeeze a bit more life out of it.

  • I suggest looking on Ebay for memory card deals. I purchased an older Vita in “like new” condition awhile ago that came with three games and a 32 GB card for $200. Obviously your mileage may vary.

  • What gibberish is that?
How on earth LCD is more energy efficient when OLED is supposed to be way more energy efficient? Please explain to me PlayStation Blog You van fool people with Electronics and Computer engineering diploma maybe bigger battery but if you compare two LCD is true vampire compare to OLED
along the way there is few more downsides of LCD over OLED like vivid colors and true white and blacks
I would argue with engineering team replacing OLED to to LCD one of biggest errors could just make agreements with supplier OLED was and its one of big advantages for VITA. Glad I bought 1st sku now even more

Downside consumer here to blame and not Sony may be this will prove people that every penny Vita was valued at worth a shot. When it first came out

  • @187 they did put biger cpacity one in to much up LCD with Oled wha trust me way bigger since it manages to outlive OLED on on one charge by few hours :) wich is funny to mw they could do it in way better way

and people who say Vita is giulty of memory prices really& and I won’t buy one because memory card is to expensive )) Just buy system than and buy Vita games phisicly lol they woek samwe as DS cards or I wonder if you ever knew it lol

  • Having a blast with the GOTY edition right now. Hope it comes with the cartridge like the black ops vita bundle. Otherwise that 8 GB is going to fill up real fast with the game plus all the DLCs.

  • Great now just get this advertising on TV, you guys arent spending one dime to show how much more amazing of a gaming, everything device this is then 3ds and ipad. And keep wondering why sales are garbage now with this good line-up emphasize killzone and tearaway for once. And start regularly announcing upcoming games like freedom wars, gravity rush 2, tearaway 2, soul sacrific delta US releases, etc. Then people buy systems, then third parties make more games. Then japan games like FF Agito, God Eater 2, Phantasy Star, etc. become localized and bingo more sales and succeeding vita.

You did this with ps3 then now ps4 you forgot all about your psp and now your vita. “Step your game up” like you had that kid say back in the old psp commercials. 3ds doesnt have the wolf among us, ipads dont have controls, its crazy the best portable system ever is failing like this.

P.S. I am a day one owner and love system and all the indie and amazing games but it should be doing way better.

  • Why does North America continuously get left out in the cold when it comes to color options for console/handheld systems?

  • I need the white one!!!
