Video: Hideo Kojima Talks Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

It’s been nearly six years since Hideo Kojima and his team at Konami delivered the PS3 epic Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Finally, its sequel is nearly upon us. The first part of Kojima Productions’ ambitious Metal Gear Solid 5 project arrives next week on PS3 and PS4. Titled Ground Zeroes, it serves as a prologue for the main event – the still-in-development The Phantom Pain.

Last month, our colleagues at SCE Japan sat down with the legendary creator to learn more about the game, and how he and his team are leveraging the power of PlayStation 4. Check out the full video above to see what he had to say.

  • Maybe he should talk about not penalizing PS4 owners for buying the next gen version of his product.

  • I was hoping this game would include a platinum.

  • Is it even possible to add the GZ pre-order to the PS4 store?

  • Regardless though I will be getting the next mGS for sure. Just as soon as they announce a release date.

  • I already pre-order Metal Gear Solid GZ for PS3

  • What about PSN EU pre-order bonuses getting peace walker hd and PSN US getting a theme on ps3 pre-order?

  • I’m very skeptical about buying a prologue game when I’m not sure if this game will be including any additional game features: from this prologue when the full game comes out with Metal Gear Solid 5 phantom pain. How will I not know if Metal Gear Solid 5 phantom pain will give me a video or clip showing what happen in the prologue of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zero’s Which would make the purchase of Metal Gear Solid Ground zeroes pointless. I don’t want to be suckered into the prologue and then buy the full game when it comes out and not really need to purchase the prologue when it gave me a recap video of what happened in ground zeroes. I’m all up for purchasing ground zeroes but I’m very skeptical.

  • @ 7 Skater_Ricky

The point of this prologue, is for people that can’t wait any longer to get there hands on the new metal gear solid game. If that’s how you feel, then the money will be well spent. If you can wait, most likely another year, to play the full game, then save your money. It’s just that simple. You won’t “miss” anything, other than the experience of playing it. All plot points, will be included in the full games release later.

  • @7 im gonna totally buy this game. this is really part of the full game, that hideo split up so that we wouldnt have to wait that long to play mgs5. so from my understanding, it should of been teh beginning of one huge game. i can understand arguements about that, but i think its a really cool idea and im happy with the decision that they made. if your skeptical, pre-order is not a good idea for you. i would just wait and see what other gamers say if i was skeptical, personally. but i cant stand the idea of not getting a mgs game. I NEED IT!

  • Who, what, when, where, and why? There is no sign of MG5 in the ps4 store at all. It’s like it s not coming out in less then a week. How can I preorder a digital copy? It’s all over ps3 store but it’s nonexistent in ps4. The order 1886 is in ps4 store so is Alien Isolation and they don’t even have release dates. This makes no sence what so ever. Way to support the new platform. Here is a free multimillion dollar idea for you. Make a Blade Runner game that starts 2 years after the movie ends. It’s a gold mine.

  • Big boo on the no Platinum. The funny thing is that Ground Zeroes on Xbox has the same amount of achievements as the PS trophies, but the value of those in points is the same as a PS Platinum so boooooooooooooo to Sony on this one you really dropped the ball.

  • I can’t watch the video from my ps4… please complete flash support for the ps4, it’s the ps4 for %!//_?’s sake.

  • Kojima Productions have never let me down, hell I even had a hoot with the PSP Acid games. While the entry price for a prologue shouldn’t be this steep for an average game or for the average gamer, MGS fans like myself have no qualms about shelling out what they’re asking. I plan to play the hell out of this game and will probably do so annually like I do the Tanker Mission from MGS 2. My advice for those on the fence is rather than complain, just sit tight and wait a couple of months and then go grab a used copy because you know you want to play this and if you want to maintain the illusion that you did so on your own terms, that’s fine too!

  • A MGS a-la PSN Game hu?…..$20 price tag,15 trophies….I know it suits a prologue but no thanks. My support, respect and status of fan for MGS ended with Guns of the Patriots…a true masterpiece. Now I’ll just wait to get Ground Zeroes for free…even if it takes the eternity…I ain’t buying this sellout.

  • I will Never buy a metal gear game until the real voice of Snake is BACK! (David Hayter) is Snake.

  • How many trophies will this prologue contain? Is there a Platinum Trophy for it?

Is there any word about the Peace Walker HD pre-order offer made in EU, coming to US?

Would be nice to get to choose between the PS3 version and PS Vita version. What If I already own the PS3 version or PS Vita?

Is Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD going to be available for pre-order? I would love to pre-order Ground Zeroes and FFX/X-2 at the same time to get my instant $10 back.

    Any word on this matters?

    Thanks.

  • Metal Gear Solid (story) meets Red Dead Redemption (open-world), Mass Effect (role-playing missions) and Uncharted (shooting-action mechanics), I say lets celebrate to this ****ing awesomeness.

  • Can’t wait for this and the full Phantom Pain. I’m 100% a die hard MGS fan! as far as David Hayter not being in this one, remember, this is Big Boss, not Solid Snake. Hayter did not voice Big Boss in MGSIV so at some point in the time line, his voice changes. I’m not too miffed about it either way, keifer will do a good job.

  • oh you must be speaking on the japanese voice actors, or imdb is wrong but it says hayter spoke for naked snake

  • ohhhh 4

  • still it says david hayter as old snake/himself unless of course they mean when big boss comes in in the end

  • No David Hayter, no buy. Accept no substitutes. Eventually Kojima is going to have to address the fans and explain this decision he must have made in a delirious sake high.

    David Hayter is Snake.

  • I can’t find Peace Walker for free? I pre ordered Ground Zeroes. I recall MGS facebook page stating it will be a pre order bonus for everyone. Have we been mislead?

  • @22

Hayter can’t even do the voice right anymore.
Secondly, Kojima wanted “Punished Snake” to be a different type of character.
A new take on Big Boss.

If you can’t accept that, your loss man.
Boycotting a game over a voice actor change is pretty damn silly.

  • EDIT-@21, not 22
    Dang random post deletions.

  • The voice sort of has to change, he is getting bold and should sound like and old boss. They couldn’t have Big Boss talking to Solid Snake with the same voice in MGSIV:GOP.

If it was a Metal Gear taking place after MGSIV with Solid Snake then I guess we could be upset with the voice change.
    Deal with it.

  • In my opinion, being a fan of Metal Gear is not blind loyalty in any way. To reiterate what was said before, Kojima’s Metal Gear games have NEVER let me down, personally. I simply cannot think of any other game franchise that has delivered so consistently. I’ll have no problem putting down some of my hard earned cash to play the game. I doubt I will be disappointed. :)

  • Who cares about platinum? this is MGS! the best franchise EVER!!

  • Well, this does happen right after Peace Walker. I could understand the voice changing after the time lapse between Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain… except the Japanese voice actor is still the same, and it’s strange realistically to think that Big Boss’s voice would change so dramatically in such a short time frame. It’s a silly change that didn’t need to happen.

Also, there’s the fact that this game is essentially going to be a glorified demo, not unlike the Tanker Mission. Yeah, the Tanker Mission was great- but it was also a part of the final game, and we didn’t have to pay $20-40 for it. That’s highway robbery any way you look at it. It’s just not worth that amount.

You can tell me to “deal with it,” with some sort of smug reaction, but there’s just absolutely no way this is going to be the gold it promises. Metal Gear is a fantastic franchise, but it needs to learn its limits and not actively screw over the fanbase. I’m already dealing with things, and you’re going to have to learn how to deal as well once you have a game you’ve beaten in six hours. “Oh, I’ll play it again!” Yeah, do that. Play that six hour game over again 10 times. It’s still gonna be six hours for a $40 game. Just rent a movie.

  • “The future is closer than u think”

An earlier phantom pain release date I hope!

  • i have less than zero interest in using the share button. kojima-san, i love your games but that button is more useless than the touchpad…

  • why i don’t have my plastation plus icon…

  • lol sorry…

  • The Xbox One version gets 1,000 points and this doesn’t get a platinum! Shame on you for preferring Xbox, Kojima!

  • The fact that David Hayter is no longer Snake killed this game for me.
But of course this only happened in the west, in the east you kept Akio otsuka.
Besides, no carboardboxes in this game? what happened to you Kojima?

  • @33

“The Xbox One version gets 1,000 points and this doesn’t get a platinum! Shame on you for preferring Xbox, Kojima!”

I’m no Xbox expert, but if I remember correctly. All Xbox games are required to have 1000 points, even the really easy and/or short games.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv-kv4QJnV8 (if link doesn’t work, vid name is Easiest 1000 gamerpoint gamerscore ever xbox 360! by p3rvypri3st.)

PS3/4 games need to earn the right to have a platinum. I think they couldn’t think of proper/hard enough ways to earn the trophies/achievements, so that’s why we won’t have a platinum.

Still getting this game though. Screw trophies, this is Metal Gear.

  • @KnifingGrimace

LOL no. Snake has ALWAYS been Akio Otsuka wtf are you smoking?? His character, personality, the way he smokes are all based on Akio Otsuka(who is a real smoker in real life)

“except the Japanese voice actor is still the same, and it’s strange realistically to think that Big Boss’s voice would change so dramatically in such a short time frame. It’s a silly change that didn’t need to happen.”

Why do people think the ENG/JPN voice directors are the same? With that kind of logic why didn’t Hayter voiced Solidus Snake in MGS2 in which Akio voiced him as well?

It’s because the voice direction is DIFFERENT. That’s why MGSV is will be unified in all version because Kojima is now handling both ENG/JPN voices.

David Hayter can’t act for SH***. Nostalgia is only blinding you if you think he’s an excellent voice actor(he’s only in the okay range)

Remove “Snake” from his voice acting resume and who is he again? LOL

  • @KnifingGrimace

Lots of games can be beaten in 6 hours.
Lots of games you probably like…
Lots of games you probably paid $60 for…
The original Metal Gear Solid can EASILY be beaten in under 3 hours, and WAY less while speed running.

You’re showing some really bad double standards.
Reminds me of people trying to discredit Metal Gear Rising for being short, yet many people regard that as the best action game of 2013.

Being short doesn’t equate to being a demo, and changing a voice actor doesn’t equate to “screwing over” a fanbase.

  • Comment 36 is right.
Its not a demo, they are simply selling you the intro separately. Its like buying the Tanker episode or the Virtuous mission first and then the full game. 30 bucks for the beginning and 60 for the end.
If you want to experience MGS5 better have 100 dollars.
On side note the interview with Sutherland is hilarious, the guy doesnt even know what “Metal Gear” is and Kojima asks one of his friends how to make MGS5 more popular and he says “using hollywood actors” xD

  • Boy oh boy, sarcasm.

Seeing as how Phantom Pain is planned for 4th quarter 2015, the whole $100 thing is pretty insignificant.
It still doesn’t address my other points.

  • So when some of you say “screwing over the fanbase”, you acually mean your personal wants and needs and not the wants and needs of every other MGS fan, right? Dont get me wrong here, i liked David Hayter and i also would prefer a full game over a split intro with a TBA game down the road but neither factors appear to make me feel “screwed over”. Youre paying money for a personally adored product (as-described) and if you’re not pleased with it, then you made a bad consumer decision, you were not screwed over lol.

oh and @28, any dedicated fan can beat any of the mgs titles in 4 hours or less. you either take your time or you dont but in reality, the PLAYER decides how long the game will last.

  • I don’t understand why MGSV Ground Zeroes is not available for pre-order for PS4… What happen, seriously?
I’m also very confused with the pre-order bonuses, the Mother Base bonuses are exclusive for Japan? USA can get just a theme for the PS3? And a digital copy of Peace Walker just for EUR? I would really appreciate is you can clarify which bonuses apply for region and which ones apply for digital or disc releases

  • Id like to comment on what kojima had to say but unfortunately when i try to watch this video on the PlayStation Blog website with the PS4 browser it just says ‘missing plugin’. People keep saying it wont support flash because HTML5 is the way of the future, but i wonder, when will Sony adopt it for thier websites?

  • I’ve always likened the character of Snake to James Bond or Batman. A man of resilience and many gadgets. While I’ve come to love David Hayter’s Snake and his voice IS who I think of when I think of Metal Gear, I’m not going to abandon the franchise because they made the decision to replace Hayter. Like the Bond and Batman franchises, there have been many actor’s to play those roles and while there were hits and misses casting-wise I never stopped loving those franchises. I was never one of those gamers who was out-raged by the switcheroo in MGS2. The same applies in this case. It’ll be awkward at first with Sutherland but I’ll adjust and return to enjoying the many other things that make up the Metal Gear Solid brand.

Like The Boss said at the end of MGS3, “Loyalty to the end . . . do you know what that means?!”

  • So why can’t I preorder this on PS4? I’m pretty upset that I’m gonna lose out on the bonus promotion.

Thanks, whoever thought that was a good idea.

  • @Welmosca

    >implying a billionaire has to sell out for a franchise that has delivered for several years

Take your pennies and dimes elsewhere with all do respect you simply do not belong here.

  • WTF! Why can’t I pre-order Ground Zeroes digiatally for the PS4? That is soooo stupid. I don’t want to have a 5 hour long game on a disc! Plus it’s $10 cheaper!

  • Why would Sony reward bad behavior? I bought a Ps4 at launch even though there were no good titles to support the new console. Now if I purchase Ground zero on ps3 I get a free game. If I purchase it on ps4 I get nothing. Shouldn’t be the other way around. Why give a perk to the people who were to cheap, to smart or just couldn’t afford a new console. We supported you Sony and you leave us out in the dark. I could just buy Ground Zero for my PS3 but I just use it for 3D bluerays now. I can’t get rid of my ps3 because ps4 doesn’t support 3d bluerays. Tell me again why should anyone buy a ps4. To ps3 goes the spoils. Enjoy ps3 owners. Enjoy. Not going to buy Ground Zero. It’s the principle of the matter. Think on that Sony. Think real hard.
