SteamWorld Dig on PS4, PS Vita: Tips and Tricks

Hi everybody! First of all, we’ve been live in the United States for two days now and, according to your user reviews, we’ve been getting a whole lot of love. But we’d be thrilled to hear what you think in the comments below or on Twitter. And hey, there’s still a couple of days left on the Spring Fever promotion for all you PlayStation Plus people out there — which means 20% off on SteamWorld Dig as well as a whole bunch of other titles. The sale lasts until March 24th, so don’t miss it.

Steamworld Dig

Today we’d like to dive a bit deeper into the gameplay of SteamWorld Dig by dishing out a few spoiler free hints and tips.

Also, because a lot of you have been asking about cross buy, we’re happy to confirm that SteamWorld Dig is cross buy across PS4 and PS Vita. And now for a few hints and tips to all you new diggers out there…

Don’t Get Greedy

Even though SteamWorld Dig is a mining game, hoarding is not recommended. If you’re unfortunate enough to fall to your death or get crushed by a falling boulder, you’ll be reassembled back in town. But reassembly comes at a price. Half your mined gold is the standard fee. It’s not so bad if your pockets are empty, but carry more than an upgrade worth of cash and we won’t take responsibility for crying and rage quitting. The universe is a cruel place, don’t you think?

Your unsold loot, however, will be safe where you left it down in the mine, just waiting to be reclaimed.

Dig Smart

The further down you go, the bigger the boon. It can be a long way down, and up for that matter, so dig smart and make good use of teleporters. They’re expensive as hell but they’ll save a lot of time and sometimes might be the only safe way out of a sticky situation.

Snoozing Baddies

There is rest for the wicked: some enemies live out the larger part of their lives in the underworld, hibernating or in nap-time, depending on the species. Noises, such as a mining robot tearing it up with a pickaxe, can wake the sleepers, so be careful where you tread. Sneaking up on them in their sleep, however, might not be the kindest move — but it can be awfully effective!

The Wall Jump

Rusty doesn’t just carry a fine piece of digging equipment, he also can do one heck of a wall jump. Mastering the wall jump will not only grant you passage back up the mine shafts you dig, but could be the tool for reaching otherwise inaccessible areas of the map. There are even rumors of shortcuts for the skilled and observant in some of the caves.

Take care and keep digging!

  • Cool, still thinking to purchase it while is on PS+ with discount or not

  • Love this game its a ton of fun!

  • Having a lot of fun with this game! Finished it on PS4, and now replaying on Vita.

Would love to see you guys add on new areas, or maybe a full-blown sequel…

  • If you like games like Terraria or Starbound, but want something a bit more focused and objective based, you’ll really enjoy Steamworld Dig.

It really scratches the ‘dig and explore’ itch like those other games, but the upgrade system, defined goals, and clear progression make it a more satisfying experience.

Of course, there’s no crafting/base building, so if THAT’S what you like from games like Terraria, then Steamworld Dig might not be for you.

  • I’m also having a ton of fun with the game! But I have to say I was a bit disappointed by the lack of cross-save. Especially as this is a cross-buy title. I’m forced to play on one platform per playthrough, and I think it would be great if I could do it on both. Is there a chance we get this functionality patched into the game?

  • Is this a platformer kind of like Guacamelee? :)

  • The lack of cross-save support was a huge blow to this… I played Guacamelee 50/50 between my PS3 and Vita always picking up where I left off… why this game didn’t take advantage of that functionality is beyond me… LOVE the game… just wish I can swap back and forth between PS4 and Vita :(

  • Just downloaded to my PS4. Great little game!

  • I just finished it last night… err… this morning. Fun game!

  • Great game with so many neat elements. Would have loved to see some more bosses and a larger map with more backtracking (respawning enemies etc) to expand on its ‘vania’ mechanics, but over all a solid game that is great fun on the vita. Fingers crossed for a sequel.

  • I really love this game and have been playing the hell out of it! I have a couple of questions, first, any chance of cross-saves coming in a patch later on? Also, do you have any plans for a sequel? I am going to finish this game on the PS4 and will replay it later this year on the Vita. Great work on this game as it is highly addictive!

  • Now this something that I want to get for my PS Vita real soon. And since its cross buy this is awesome!!!!!!!!!

  • Just adding to the chorus of “Great Games!” out there. I bought it on a whim the other night without really knowing too much about it, and have been loving it. And for $8? It’s a steal!

  • I bought this game and am glad I did. Unfortunately, I’ve sacrificed a lot of sleep, due to the addictiveness of this game. It makes mornings at work a little harder each day.

  • Picked this up this last Tuesday! Having fun with it so far I just wish that the PS4 and Vita versions had cross save.

  • This game really is a great game. The Fact that each new game randomizes the dungeons is awesome. Though I will warn people that for the first half hour it is a bit slow. But after you cross that mark wow! It is nuts! I would recommend this to anyone who plays any type of games.

  • Steamworld Dig, Steamworld Dig, Trio Trio Trio.

  • Loving the game on Vita.

  • Cross-Buy is great. But lacking Cross-Save functionality negates all benefits of having it on both systems… and that’s why I don’t own this game.

  • Whats use on Vita?

  • I already played this on the 3DS, and I don’t care about HD graphics or the achievements, so I won’t be buying it again, but it’s a great game, and I’m glad that more people will have a chance to play it now.

  • I wouldn’t say any part of this game is “Nuts” or “exciting”… it’s an average mining puzzle basically.
I beat it relatively quickly, the trophies on the other hand will be quite the challenge those attempting some of them.
Love the art style though, very vibrant.

  • The game is too short!

  • Really enjoying this on Vita right now.

I don’t see the reason for lacking cross-save functionality. Why isn’t it there? Can we expect it in the (near) future?

  • I’m really enjoying this game. But everyone’s making a great point about cross-save. Cross-save is the real jewel to cross-buy games. When there isn’t cross-save I’m likely to just pick a version and stick with it. Highly unlikely to ever touch it on the other platform.

  • Also – Your drill can hit squares across gaps or any of the three squares above you, not just the one above the square you’re standing on. Position carefully for more options!

  • And in the end,I just purchased it :) have a lot if fun

  • 五星游戏! 7小时通关,很好玩! 不过尼玛 谁设计的奖杯?! 2.5小时 通关奖杯? 一命通关奖杯? 你丫逗我?! 游戏通关了 还不能继承存档。。。。。唉。。。

  • Bought this and looking forward to giving it a spin. I’m glad to hear people are having fun with it.

  • Love the game, it’s fantastic.

  • Please, add Cross-Save with an update.

    Thanks!
