PlayStation Still <3s Devs -- 1,000 Self-Publishers

PlayStation Still

PS4 has been met with an amazing amount of enthusiasm and excitement from both gamers and developers alike since its launch back in November, and the 6 million gamers who have already bought PS4 have really embraced this next-generation gaming experience. We’ve got more than 100 games scheduled to launch on PS4 this year alone, including Watch_Dogs, The Elder Scrolls Online, Destiny, and The Order: 1886.

That amazing lineup is made possible by the development community, who have been hard at work with our hardware, already pushing it to do things that we never expected. Recently we reached a significant milestone with more than 1,000 developers licensed globally to self-publish on our platforms, 200 of those licensed in North America since PS4 was unveiled in February 2013.

A year ago at the Game Developers Conference, we kicked our support for independent developers into high-gear. Since then, we continued to partner with some of the world’s best and brightest independent developers committed to bringing their titles — some of the most creative and innovative games I’ve seen — to PlayStation platforms. We’ve already seen some great content hit PS4 — from crafting waffles in Don’t Starve to scaring the pants off of people with Outlast. We’re looking forward to some of this year’s self-published titles like Octodad, Transistor, N++, GALAK-Z, Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, and The Witness, and you know we’re all already playing a metric arrow ton of TowerFall Ascension.

This year’s GDC was awesome, as usual. We had a blast meeting with developers, both partners we’ve worked with time and time again, as well as new up-and-coming talent. We also continued collecting feedback from developers on what they’ve discovered while spending time with our platforms, and we introduced some new tools that will help ease the process of bringing their games to PlayStation gamers… not to mention how we peeked into the future of PlayStation.

To developers, to fans: THANK YOU for helping us make history with PlayStation 4.

  • So much more to come ..

  • And we <3 you Sony! Thanks so much for making the PS4 such an amazing console… the future is bright indeed! #PS4EVER

  • While I’m excited to see PlayStation hardware in such a great place, and I love the support that indie devs have been getting, I’m concerned that so much talent has been drifting away from Sony’s major developers like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, and Sucker Punch. It’s confusing and worrisome. Could you comment on that?

  • get some of these devs to produce for the Vita as well… it sorely needs it.

  • Awesome!

Now use your mighty Sony powers to get Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 as exclusives!

  • Yes where’s Vita’s? Where’s 2014 game list for vita? Where are devs for Vita? I’m sicking of Sony sometimes

  • I am still waiting for that game that spells next gen. I think Dragon Age Inquisition and Batman Arkham Knight may be those games that speak next gen.

  • Great to hear Playstation 4 is doing so well, even if it is a slow start. I’m loving my PS4, the games that are on it, games that are coming, and the awesome share fuctionality. Live streaming is more fun than I expected.

Can’t wait to see what you guys have in store for E3!!! Please try to get Square Enix to reveal more info. on Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix, Final Fantasy XV, and a release window for Final Fantasy Type-0 during your E3 conference. Having FFXV and Kingdom Hearts 3 in your show was probably one of the many hype moments of E3 2013!

  • Sony . the situation is not good . I have been a loyal playstation fan since the first PS , but the way you are treating the first parties is such a disaster . My favorite franchise ; uncharted; seems to be ****ed up without any directors and unknown status of development . Do some clarifications about uncharted , the situation is frustrating .
    Thanks ,
    A pissed-off playstation fan .

  • Keep it up! For those wondering about games for the Vita, maybe you haven’t been paying attention. There are a ton of games coming for the Vita this year. Mostly indie games or Japanese titles, but there’s a lot to look forward to. The Vita could really use more announcements in the vein of AC: Liberation or Uncharted Golden Abyss, though, that’s for certain.

  • available at $399

Checks Canadian websites… 449.99……… k den (I know about the Canadian dollar being low)

anyways, I’ll be picking up a PS4 in December

  • 100 games for Vita in 2014 !
    98 Indies + 2 Monster Hunter Clones!
    NICE!

    R.I.P Ps Vita..

  • That’s fantastic to hear! To think… some of these titles will be cross-buy too! PLEASURE OVERLOAD!!!!!

My wife and I own a PS4, PS3 (x2), Vita (x2), PSP (x2) and I personally love my Xperia Z1. I’m totally stoked to see what games these developers will bring to the PlayStation library!

Oh, and we’re subscribed to PS+ till 2017. So, thank you Sony (and the 1000 plus devs), and keep it up!

  • Gamers Still <3 Playstation – 6 Million PS4s Sold :D

  • I understand that Indie games are a part of Vita’s library, BUT, as a PSP owner, i remember to play some AWESOME games in the past, like: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, Metal Gear, Dragon Ball Z ( A good one), Megaman, Naruto, Jeanne da Arc and so much more awesome quality games.

    That’s what i’m trying to say…
We need ALSO these kind of games.
I’m not against Indie games, i just want a balance on it.
    Some Indies and some AAA.
    That’s all.

  • And we love you, Sony!

  • I co-sign what +Frodomec said.

  • Nicely done.

  • Thank you all its really great to see the support PS consoles are getting from everyone, we will thank you with our wallets :D

  • I thank you!! I hope to become 1 as well.

  • Good job Sony…keep supporting the devs and of course your devoted gamers.

  • And thank you Sony! it makes me all fuzzy inside knowing that you care about as much as we care about you. Thank you for everything and here is to another hundred years of Sony success.

  • The greatness is continuing from here on of course, so know nobody can’t complain about what games are coming out for the platform.

  • I will publish a game one of this days

  • indie games on PSN are overprice as hell. the same game on smartphones are way cheaper. why?

  • I like indies and all, but that’s too much. I want more AAA on the Vita not cross buy titles that I can just play on my PS3/4. Mainly more variety in the Vita games, I mean there’s way too many MH clones that are all the same just reskined. It’s kinda sad the Vita has so much potential and power yet it’s just getting 15 dollar indie games that don’t push anything or not support at all.
What happened to Bioshock? A new Uncharted, etc. We got the GoW collection coming but you can buy the whole Saga for cheaper instead of just two games on the go.

  • as much as i like indie games, they are not worth the asking price, they finish very soon and it’s hardly any replay value to them.
but aaa titles, they are the price of 4-6 indie games but in the same time you can play alot of them for months and months and yet don’t get board with them.

  • Supporting independent developers for the Playstation platform is a WIN and a no-brainer. Thank you for making the platform relatively easy to access and develop for, I think it will pay off immensely.

I have an app idea for the PS Vita that I would like to implement, but I have yet to apply for a business/corporation license (had rather not put it under my existing, non-related license) — has Sony considered opening development to those without one? I understand it could bring headaches and perhaps threaten platform security but it does have upsides as well. Just curious if that idea has ever been thrown around to let individuals (not under a corporation) apply for and develop with a development kit.

  • Junguler, you may be playing the wrong indie games if you think they’re all over too quick with no replay value. Some may be short, but most have a ton of replay value.

  • I’m hoping that the PS Vita won’t be just another PSP that’s going to be throw away. What do i mean by that? That PS Vita will just die out and no one cares about it at all. Pretty much due to the face only small amount of gamers and new comers owning the system. To me i think the PS Vita is truly one of the best handheld ever created and needs more support to make it stand out.

I own PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS Vita, and soon the PS4 next. If PS Vita TV comes out i’m planing to get one so i can own two PSVita system; one as handheld and small home console. I love to see more games on PS Vita using not just the buttons but the touchscreen, back touchpad , and motion sensing plus using vita cam’s as well.

PS Vita TV can use the PS3 Eye sense it was built with low specs and should work well with PS Vita TV sense it has USB Port.

    :) Peace :)

  • @ Monterossa: They’re cheaper on smartphones because of the install base and the purchasing sensibilities of smartphone users. There are what, hundreds of millions of smartphone users? Every single one of those is a possible buyer. But thanks to the app markets on every device, prices have been driven down to the lowest common denominator, and they have to sell thousands/hundreds of thousands of copies to actually make any kind of profit, aside from just staying afloat.
On PS consoles, there is generally a second company being paid to port it over, and any pay2play schemes are generally removed, so the price has to reflect profit for the original developer, profit for the port company, and make-up profit for the removal of micro-transactions. And the knowledge that a smaller user base = smaller pool of buyers, so they need a much larger percentage of possible buyers to make a purchase for it to be profitable or just to break even. If they charge a normalized console fee, then they don’t need to sell gangbusters to make their money back, and those who want to support them will purchase their games, because they know they are helping the industry as a whole.

  • Greatness Continues.

  • Sony is looking out for their customers always. That’s what I see.

  • @ Frodomec

“AAA” games take more time to develop nowadays. Going forward from here, the big-budget big-name games that you want are going to be more spaced out. There WILL BE less AAA titles every year from now on.

This is why indies are more important than ever. They fill in the gaps between the big releases which is absolutely essential for keeping up interest in the brand, and therefore, success.

At this point, the industry wouldn’t be able to survive without indies. The way the business has evolved dictates that big-budget games and indie games must go hand-in-hand. You can’t have one without the other. This is the nature of the industry today. You’re just going to have to accept it.

People who complain about indies actually have no idea just how much the entire industry depends on them. Only noobs and/or posers make these complaints, because anyone who knows better would appreciate the vital support the indie devs are offering to the overall strength of the industry; our precious hobby.

Luckily, many indies games are fun to play and worth the asking price. I might have quit gaming by now if this hadn’t been the case.

  • @ Monterossa

Pretty much what AizawaYuuichi said. It’s all about profit margins. Releasing a game on a platform with a smaller install base requires a higher asking price in order to meet projections.

About 900 gazillionbillion people have smart phones… therefore, a dev can sell a game for 99 cents and will still be able to recover what they invested into the game + earn a profit. Selling a game for 99 cents on a console won’t get them anywhere. But it doesn’t mean that the game’s value is 99 cents. The price is set that low to “move units”, so to speak. In this case, downloads.

Prices are ALWAYS set as low as possible on any given platform. The theory of “corporate greed” that keeps popping up is entirely ignorance-based, and way off-target.

It’s essential that you understand this. Your complaint is one that is very common these days and it comes directly from ignorance, no disrespect intended. Anyone who has a genuine interest in this hobby should strive to learn as much as possible about the business side of things (not just the tech), and the research that factors into decisions made by the big wigs. You’d be surprised to find out just how much YOU THOUGHT you knew was wrong all along.

  • What an exciting time for sony, PlayStation, and me as a gamer … I’m ready for the next 7 years

  • That’s VERY impressive. Especially in such a short amount of time. Great job!

  • Look at all of these games are confirmed or strongly rumored to be headed to PS Vita:

    Dead Nation
Don’t Starve (Klei “investigating” Vita version)
Towerfall Ascension (MMGs said it’s “possible in the future”)

    Lego The Hobbit
Mercenary Kings (Tribute commented on EU Blog that they saw potential vita version)
    MLB 14: The Show

And this loooooong list doesn’t even include announced and unannounced AAA games or Vita exclusives. Makes me very happy to be a Vita owner! But the vita has no games, right (lol!)?

  • @35 Iam not a noob/poser because I dont like most of the indie garbage. Ive been gaming for decades, just because your a rabid fanboy(girl?) dont assume everybodylikes them.

  • @ amwujm

You need to work on your reading comprehension, pal.

I never said anyone was a noob/poser because they don’t like indies. I said that only noobs and/or posers wouldn’t UNDERSTAND what the indie class has provided to the industry, not limited to the revenue they rake in, and the attention they bring to the brand names whose machines sit in our living rooms. Only noobs and/or posers wouldn’t APPRECIATE the life support indies provide to the mainstream while the big names are busy working in their studios in-between releases. Get it now?

  • Although PS4 game play is absolutely far more advance than it’s predecessors, there are a few things that bothered me so far as in its inability to download apps such as youtube, stream from home pc or laptop and it has virtually limited the users functionality of tools to a box like environment, if you want to go out side that box! This will cost you, in dollars that is! But PS4 still lacks that home feeling with out sharing files with your home pc and to link up with friend is going to cost cash money now.

But on the other hand my PS3 can handle all of the functionalities missing and mentioned above, at one point I was going to trade my PS3 in for the PS4 I am so glade I did not make that mistake! Got a funny feeling I’ll be using my PS3 soon.

  • This is great but when will we see some games? The library is sooooooo small right now. And Why doesn’t North America have War Thunder yet? It’s been out in Europe forevers. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for the future, but I almost wish I would’ve switched from my 360 to a ps3 rather than a ps4 for a year. The ps3 gets great and free games all the time still.
