But MLB 14 The Show isn’t the only anticipated launch this week; Mercenary Kings hits PS4 and packs retro visuals on top of a killer, side-scrolling shooter/RPG hybrid. Craft weapons and take on deadly missions solo or with friends.

  • Holy crap, dude. I wasn’t trying to pin any of that on you. Just explaining my argument. Straw man nothing. I wasn’t saying you’re a casual, a graphics snob, or the owner of a small mind.

There is no “grandeur” about indies either. I don’t suggest that. I only highlight the real-world value they give to the overall strength of the industry. It is not “supposed”. It is factual. Statistics would reveal this to anyone who cared to know. I simply feel it’s better to have the facts out there mixed in with all the misinformation so that people can study both sides and make up their own mind, rather than having an entirely lop-sided agenda shoved in their faces at all times.

As far as the other subtle implication you made, well, I’m not reckless with the name-calling. The words I use are more like labels… well-deserved labels, mind you. It’s a method of expression… or are your thumbs really made of steel?

  • That PS2 Classic Section! @_@

i love to see amazing gems like Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army on store. I hope for more Shin Megami Tensei games in the Store. Thx.

  • It doesn’t matter whether one thought game graphics were ugly back in the 80s. There wasn’t anything else to compare it to. That’s the way video games looked. It’s like before the broadband days, people didn’t think their analog modem was slow. With every modem upgrade, they only said that BBS was faster (yes, BBS, not internet :))

Yes, there are a lot of gamers who like retro games (I won’t call them the majority though). That’s why we keep seeing requests for PS1 and PS2 classics here in the comments. But they like the 80s games the way they were back in the 80s – the original, the real 80s games made in the 80s. Whether they also like a 2010s game to play like a 2010s game but look like a 1980s game, I am not so sure. (Sure, some of these pseudo-80s game do play like 80s game, but not all. I doubt they had MOBAs back then.)

  • They need to try and put a little upscaled port to Ps4…
I really like how it looks but i hardly use my ps3 anymore so it would be cool if it was on Ps4.

  • Ragnorok Odyssey

  • Just to be clear, I am not saying that games must look like Uncharted or Second Son. All I want is decent graphics, as I put it earlier, a circle looks like a circle and text can be easily read. Give me Angry Birds graphics, NDS graphics, Wii graphics… those are all perfectly acceptable to me. Just not something where each character is made of a 9×9 block of pixels or something. (If blockiness is required, do it the Lego or 3D Dot Game Heros way.)

I have seen some gameplay video of Towerfall Ascension. My first impression was that there’s a lot of fast and furious action going on. So much so that the 8-bit graphics becomes a hinderance to gameplay – cos it’s so hard to even track your own character. Everyone, in their full blockiness, look alike! The words and icons are hard to read too. The screen is so busy that you can’t really see what’s going on with the 8-bit graphics. Just imagine how much better that game could be if it has better graphics (doesn’t need to be PS All-stars Battle Royale graphics, just something more decent, even if it looks like something coming from South Park). There’s nothing 80s about the gameplay there, so why must the art style be 80s?

  • @PrimeroIncognito: Yeah, I get it. I know you weren’t directing any of those “labels” at me. I just don’t think they’re very effective when used to get your point across. I’ve used far worse when I’ve been aggravated, and in hindsight that didn’t really serve a purpose either.

You did claim that I missed where you said it would be nice to have great graphics + great gameplay together. Again, we agree there. I just reject the notion that people who prefer great graphics to “other” qualities and/or styles don’t value gameplay.

Not everyone will “see the light” about indies, but that’s okay. It’s okay if you want to defend them even after it becomes clear the person(s) you’re speaking with will never agree. I’m comfortable knowing we and many others will keep buying and playing them, thereby saving the industry from utter destruction!!!!!1!11!11!!!1

I don’t think the industry is in dire straits, and I’m pretty sure you don’t either. :)

Sure there was. Photographs, paintings, drawings (I had a friend who used to draw his own levels and characters for video games he wanted to make, and they were so highly detailed, they could have never been re-created on any consoles of that time without a massive scaling down of detail), etc.

I remember how my brother and I used to joke about how everything was composed of little squares (the awareness of the simplicity and limitations of 8-bit systems). At the same time, of course, that’s exactly what made us marvel at the creativity and resourcefulness of game designers of that time, since they were able to do so much with so little. And as a result, art was created. Art that was beautiful and moving in its simplicity, that would inspire an entire generation of creative types who grew up to become the game designers of today.

“before the broadband days, people didn’t think their analog modem was slow” … I did!

Anyway, I’m finally off to bed now. Thanks for the conversation guys.

  • @ ThumbsOfSteel74

    I’ll deal with you later! Heh heh… j/k… :)

  • Slight change of subject: I read an article about a scholarly study done regarding fake news sites and why their stories are widely shared and believed. (Read on for relevance.) The authors of the study found that many people reject the mainstream press and wind up in parts of the web where facts are not checked and unsubstantiated rumors abound. I have to believe the same thing happens to gamers: They reject mainstream gaming review sites as “bought and paid for,” and then have little to guide them when a demo is unavailable. So they wind up buying the very dreadful games the reviewers were trying to steer them away from.

I don’t argue the reviewers always get it right, but I have generally been pleased with well-reviewed games *if* I was already interested in them before reading the reviews. Occasionally at first, and perhaps more so now, I would let underground buzz sway me toward a game I would otherwise have ignored.

  • Marginal relevance: People who only buy games with top-notch graphics will miss out on all those great games without such graphics. They’ll also wind up buying some real garbage, especially if they reject all review sites as “biased.” But that’s a choice many are willing to make. I won’t call it a shame since they wouldn’t have enjoyed even the best games with simpler graphics.

Oh yeah…this post ( :P ): I’ll add the PS4 game (free to Plus) via the web store like always. Then probably a couple of demos and that’s about it. I’m loving the PS2 Classic love, even if it is just a trickle and the current game doesn’t appeal to me. Glad to see many are pleased with it, though.

  • Man, I wish PS1/2 classics were released more frequently. Also, just out of curiosity, but I’ve been on a bit of Gundam kick lately, and I have to ask: Any chance at all for digital versions of the Gundam games on PS1 and PS2 in the future?

  • Most of these cats complaining about graphically inferior games on the PS4 are going to be the ones buying and playing the hell out of the PS4 version of Minecraft.

  • Hey Ryan do you know if Mercenary Kings is free for ps plus memborinos or is it a purchase only?

  • PLEASE REPLY!

Please may you please tell us when “Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium Duels” will be released. Thank you kind sir/madam.

  • Still no sign f Strike Suit Zero; any word on when we’ll see it in the US?

  • “Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army”

    Oh HELL YES! FINALLY!

  • Is there going to be a ps3 to ps4 upgrade available for The Show?

  • Well well well people gonna always complain like a broad about nothing for them or these indie games are not what they want. Too bad you don’t have a choice but to deal with it cry me a river.

  • when will demo’s be up?

  • Mercenary Kings

  • When will the new batman be available for PS4?

  • Sorry, I meant, when will Batman: Arkham Origins be available on PS4? Will we have to wait for Playstation Now?

  • now april fools is over, what is the psn+ game for ps4 this month? (i mean no disrespect to mercenary kings developers, it looks like a good game but its not exactly a ps4 game)
