It’s time to reveal a secret about our upcoming horror game, SOMA. Before reading any further, take a look at this trailer:
That’s right, our next game will be set deep below the water’s surface – at the bottom of the sea. It was a decision which came very swiftly; Jens (co-founder of Frictional Games) and I sort of decided it on whim during a meet-up. But it’s something that had been brewing inside us for a long time. Most of our earth is covered in ocean, and yet it’s something that we know very little about. It is an incredibly hostile environment filled with strange creatures, and it is right on our door step.
Most of the ocean is devoid of sunlight and inhospitable to us. The differences in pressure between the surface and even a modest depth of 100 meters is enough to turn a human into mush. That pressure, that depth, is nothing compared to the true ocean deeps. And as if this isn’t enough, the creatures living there seem like they’re from another world. Gigantic squid, luminescent fish and creatures that are all mouths and teeth are only the start. If you dive down any distance you enter into a realm of monsters.
The ocean is an alien world, and we’ve only scratched the surface. We feel it’s the perfect place to explore in a horror game.
When SOMA is released on PS4 in 2015, we invite you to take a deep breath and follow us down into the darkness.
Very interesting! Like the setting, a little bioshock inspiration? :)
Can not wait to try this game.
*Rubs chin* Interesting…. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Will SOMA be at E3 2014?
Does this game come with a fresh set of underwear?
I love the concept and I for one wish that you are planning for Morpheus for the most immersive experience. This known unexplored alien world up close would be surreal. Can’t wait for your master piece to come out.
I was very excited to start reading that the setting for this game is underwater – but then I was extremely disappointed to learn that it’s a horror game.
When will the PS4 ever get an underwater sci-fi shooter/RPG – and not a horror game?
Between this trailer and the gameplay trailer, I’m totally confused and I love it!
Looks / sounds great, Thomas. Consoles need more horror games, especially indie ones. Can’t wait to play this in 2015.
You like fish sticks?
My PS4 says missing plugging :(
It seems like a perfect horror setting. I hope that it will be Morpheus compatible.
This looks stinking amazing. Amnesia was a great game, this looks even better. Very atmospheric, it’s a perfect settings for a suspenseful horror game.
Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture ??? Oohhh wait this is another game :D …
This seems like a perfect opportunity to tie into that The Deep VR demo for Morpheus :-)
I’ve been waiting for SOMA ever since it was announced. This looks so awesome!
cool !!inspired by bioshock?
Very Nice. Me Like!
So horror adventure in the deep seas aye this has taken the genre to a new direction. This will be most interesting indeed.
this looks so awesome. i love frictional games and i hope this is the beginning of a beautiful sony and frictional relationship. amnesia scared the hell out of me.
Definitely one I’ll probably buy. I love the idea of a horror game set underwater. Heck, I just like the fact that it’s set underwater, regardless of what genera it fits into!
I’m intrigued.
