New Combat Trailer Revealed for Bound by Flame on PS4

Hello, PlayStation.Blog readers! This is Walid, producer at Spiders Studio. I’m very proud to tell you about Spiders’ latest game, and our first RPG for PS4, Bound by Flame. We plan to launch on May 9th for PS3 and PS4.

Today, we decided we’d focus a little more on the game’s combat and show off some PS4 footage for the first time.

This video is brand new and 100% pure gameplay — nothing pre-rendered — and should give you a little taste of the combat before we debut an epic combat trailer that covers all the combat mechanics and fighting styles. You’ll catch a glimpse of all the possibilities Bound by Flame offers in combat: Stealth, crossbow, fireballs, and a two-handed axe and hammer.

New Combat Trailer Revealed for Bound by Flame on PS4

In Bound by Flame, the combat system lets you instantly switch between three stances (Fighter, Ranger, and Pyromancer), allowing you to adapt to the enemy you’re facing on the fly. We also showcase some of the creatures you’ll be fighting. There’s a lot of them out there, and each has its own characteristics and tendencies in combat.

The array of weapons in Bound by Flame offers a large number of possibilities. Will you smash your foes with a hammer, slice and dice with an axe or sword, or go sneaky with double daggers and long-range weapons? Or will you unleash the power of the demon and become a fearless pyromancer?

And if you want more info about the game, don’t hesitate to visit the official website or the official Facebook Page.

I’ll stop by sometime to answer comments, so if you have any questions, just ask!

  • It’s my birthday!!! This is beyond awesome!!!!!

  • You have my attention.

  • This looks really good. I like how the weaker enemies lose balance and fall over when you kick them. The graphics look great as well. It’s great to see that troll get burned and react to getting burned. Can you tell me how long in hours it will take me to finish the game? Is there just a main quest or are there side quests as well? Do you support Vita Remote Play for the PS4 version? Looking forward to picking this up on D1. Thanks for your hard work!

    • It’s around 30h gameplay to complete the game once – and of course there’ll be multiple side quests. But depending on your choices, you can unlock different endings, and live a different story. You indeed have a flame demon living inside you, that will always push you to make evil decisions. This will have an impact on the story, on the relashionship with your companions… and also on your combat style – the demon will lend you its powerful pyromancer skills. So I hope you’ll enjoy replaying the game, making different choices to see all the endings, and also to try all the specificities of each combat style and weapon.

  • I’m really excited about this game and the combat looks fun…BUT these graphics are very subpar, this looks like a PS3 game. Hopefully the final product will look much better cus this looks really ugly for a PS4 game tbh

  • Sorry but this game doesn’t look interesting. I understand its not about the graphics but for a next gen console it is below standard. As well as the enemy doesn’t have no reaction to getting hit as if your attacks have no effect on them.

  • Will there be Bow’s as a main weapon? Aside from a crossbow i mean?

  • Definitely a game -now- on my radar.

I am a big fan of an enjoyable action-RPG romp. Especially if it is anything like Gothic 1, 2, Risen, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fable 1, etc.. as far as being single player titles.

    That being said..
the $60 standard for nearly all new games has made me learn new levels of patience.

Even when the funds are at my disposal, too many of these single player games hold little replay value.
if it is a single player only game i could see this being cheaper sooner rather than later.

i have no point to my ramblings…
    thanks for your time.

  • Amazing! day 1 for sure and thanks for the footage

  • Well, that was certainly impressive, you have my interest. How is character progression handled? Do I dump points into stats to be better at swords or spells, or is it pre-set progression? Any chance of a demo so we can give the combat a go for ourselves?

    • Each level up means experience points to spend in 3 skill trees. You can unlock/improve skills to specialize into Warrior Stance (tank, break, stun moves) OR Rogue Stance (DPS, dodge) AND Pyromancer (fire balls, area spells, fire your weapon, invoke fire spirits…). Around 15 skills per tree that you can upgrade thrice each. Aside, you have TRAITS POINTS to spend to improve your CRAFTING skills, COMBAT skills…
… and DEMON TRAITS! If you do mean choices and chose the “dark” side along your journey, your inner flame demon will progressively take the control of your soul and you will unlock specific traits. You’ll get more powerful in fire spells/mana regen, but there will also be side effects I won’t develop today. :)
The equipment you loot/purchase, and more important the crafting system, will also be key elements in your progression.

  • Looks alright, the fire enhancement thing is weird though. It looks like you are on fire.

  • Are you guys optimizing the interface for the DualShock 4?

The combat looks natural and with the weapon customization options things will get very, very interesting.

    • The DualShock 4 allows you to use the touch pad to cast spells and use consumables. You can also use L2 + Cross, Square, Triangle or Circle if you are not comfortable with the swipe gesture. The DualShock 4 light bar also gives regular feedback on the character’s condition.

  • Hi can you turn off the slow motion effect? I prefer time to be unaltered.

    • You can’t tun it down. That a visual effect that occurs when you do critical attacks, or when you counter/dodge your ennemy attack with a perfect timing.

  • Looking good!

  • Loving this style of combat. I like how the enemies react and fall over. I like the quickness of the combat and different motions with timed blocks and attacks. I like how it’s not just hack and slash or God Of War style. I like the difference in stealth, Warhammer and dual swords also. Got my copy pre ordered.

  • 7# It’s a $50 game(PS4)

  • Thought this would be a PSN title until I saw the end of the video…well it could be good but looks frustrating and animations aren’t good.Hope the game turns out good though.Any chance of a demo?

  • That looks fantastic! And right before my birthday so yeah, it’ll be a good one this year. Will this be also offered as a downloadable version? Trying reeaaalll hard not to buy solid media anymore

    • A digital version of Bound by flame will be available on the playstation store for both Playstation 3 and Playstation 4.

  • Please add PS Vita to the list I wanna pre-order it

  • Probably gonna get it but why is this game $50? Does it have limited content or something?

  • I like what I see, but I hope better colision system during combat when the game releases. I mean, there are some attacks that the enemies don’t seem to “feel”. it’s kind of weird.

Is there any type of lock-on during combat? I think I missed it while watching this and another video gameplay.

    Thank you!

    • During a fight you have chances of breaking an enemy’s attack or having your attacks being broken. The opposite is also true; an enemy can be resistant to breaking and you can improve your character’s resistance. Being resistant means taking damage but not playing hurt animations and not being stopped, thus, sometimes, giving the impression that the enemy did not “feel” the blow. You can improve your “breaking” ability as well as your resistance through your skill tree and choices of equipment.

Also, it is possible to lock-on any target at anytime; allowing you to focus a specific enemy, crowd control your targets or just use your ranged weapons.

  • This looks terrible – hopefully more testing soon but combat looks boring as heck and not fluid at all.

  • This looks just like my kind of game. The combat looks awesome and so does the loot. I can’t wait to buy it.

I would just like to say though, can you please please please add an option to completely turn off the slow motion effect? I really don’t like that in games, specially when it is a constant effect going on in combat. Please ask the developers if they can add in an option to turn off the slow motion effect during combat :(

  • This reminds me of dragons dogma, dragon age, and kingdoms of amalur but on next gen systems. This will be one to watch and see how this fairs.

  • No doubt day 1 purchase for me. Already preordered for PS4. I am always on the lookout for RPGs to play. I am liking the feel of the slower based combat. Less enemies and more time in a one-one one-to-few more drawn out fight. Good luck hope this is a hit!

  • I only have one issue. That sound that’s used for critical hits and counters sounds like it will get really repetitive and annoying after a few hours of gameplay. A one second low sounding chime or something might be a bit more effective. Then again it could just be me.

  • I hate to say this you need to delay the game and work on the animation. The characters come off as disconnected you need animate hits to at least the npcs and if possible add in dynamic kill animations to give the player a sense of gratification after beating a large opponent. As for the rest of the trailer visually it looks great same with the mechanics of the combat unfortunately like I stated before the animation needs work. Job well done other wise from what i’ve seen in the trailer.

  • 15# thank you for the reply. steep though still perhaps.

  • Looks fun, but the animations could use more polish. The stealth kill was pretty weak. It looked like the undead just got it’s back scratched. The daggers should have impaled the enemy, IMO.

  • Well, I want this game. The enemies seem difficult to stun lock.

Would love to have bows. Do we have short spears, etc? What are my chances to be a ranged fighter?

  • The voice acting is good.

  • I was probably “lukewarm” about this game coming out. Most RPGs will get some attention from me simply because I am a huge fan of the genre and am always looking for a good game to sink 30-50 hours into. The original videos for this had me interested and I didn’t have a real reason to doubt it.

This video didn’t necessarily turn me off of the game, but there is one glaring issue I have with it, especially for it being an action-RPG…..The “hit detection” looks quite bad. I’m not sure if it’s something they are still working on, but the amount of times an enemy reacted to being hit when there was clearly no contact made is quite distressing. Example: during the “Stealth Attack” sequence, the player stabs at the Undead enemy with 2-Daggers and kills him. However, if you look at he video, the blades never really look to make contact with the enemy. And also…who sneaks behind an enemy and thrusts upward when attacking him? Just seems like a very unnatural move.

All that being said….still hoping that this game turns out quite well. It’s been a long while (in gaming terms) since I’ve played a memorable Action RPG.

  • Backgrounds look great. Animations look horrible. Maybe just unfinished?

  • jason_redemption

This looks good yet I have a few concerns. The combat almost looks sluggish but I’m hoping that what I’m seeing is simply more strategic. I also don’t like how to have magic powers you have to choose to be evil (and give into the demon). I was hoping this would be similar to Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning.

  • I know this question is late, but is it possible to turn off the slow motion? The game looks playable other then that for me, it would kill me to have to keep going in and out of slo-mo.

  • Pre-ordered on Ps3. :)
In Europe cost 50 on Ps3 and 70 on Ps4, 70 on Ps4 are unexplained.
Thi is not even a next-gen game. Is a Ps3 game ported even on Ps4.
