PS4 Update 1.70 Coming Soon, Introducing SHAREfactory

Scott McCarthy's Avatar + Posted by Scott McCarthy on Apr 16, 2014 // Director, Product Planning & Software Innovation, SCEA

Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.

As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.

Introducing: SHAREfactory

The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:

With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.

Share With the World

Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!

Play as Soon as the Game is Released

Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.

As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

We’ll have more information to share about new upcoming features for this major system software update as the release approaches, so stay tuned!

The update sounds great so far. Please also allow us to create custom subsets on our friends list. With the ability to add up to 2000 people, custom grouping is kinda necessary, along with grouping our media library. Will we also get external media support soon? And friends notifications when they sign on? Thanks a lot.

Really excited for these updates, all I can suggest is the ability to customize the “home” screen. I want to be able to move the tiles around choose which ones I think are priority, and also give Netflix and Hulu their own tiles outside of the whole streaming apps section.

One ‘issue’ I have had is when there’s a new software update that is required you can no longer use remote play since it doesn’t let you sign in. Don’t suppose you could find a work around to that for us that commute and stay away from home a lot. I could see many security reasons as to why you don’t let people sign in until they update though.

Security is a big reason you’re right. We put security first but also want to make updates as seamless as possible, good feedback.

@43: Yes! More voice commands for PS Camera please. If you could put some in the Netflix app for instance, that would be great. I don’t know who develops for that, or is in charge of decisions for it. But being able to *at least* pause and resume with voice commands would be a huge help for me, since the DS4 turns off every 10 minutes and movies last way longer than that. Needing to turn on the DS4, choose my account and then pause is really annoying. Just saying, “PlayStation Pause” or something would be a lot better.

Please consider more voice commands. I also think we can’t even get to video apps with voice commands on the UI. So that would be nice.

Can’t believe people are complaining about a YouTube app when they’re most likely posting from a computer, phone, or tablet. We wanted a console with a primary focus on GAMING and that’s what we got. Deal with it.

I really hope they do plan on adding a Microphone volume feature. My Corsair vengeance 1500 v2 has amazing sound, but microphone in chat is too quiet and I have to put the mic on my mouth. Hopefully they can do something like this. Not everyone has extra money to shell out over a new headset when they have one that works. Especially how I got mine 8 months ago.

@53: I’ve had that issue as well. It also does that if the PS4 shut down improperly. Like when my power went out while the PS4 was in standby. It also doesn’t let you use the PS4 unless you have it auto-sign in to an account. I thought my PS4 was broken the first time remote play started up with a black screen. xP Which was the day I got it. Freaked me out. xD

I really liked the download before release feature Cartoon Network PS3 had. It was very convinient.
We were able to download the game 4 days before the release of the game and play it RIGHT when the game came out.

The Direct to USB is great, because yeah – you literally can do anything with the video, even if it is just saving it on your computer even. My question is: can you export any content from your captures to USB, or must it pass through Share Factory first? (i.e. if I just want to take the 15min raw, or a clip I quickly trimmed with the existing tools and put that to USB, do I need to bother to go through the Share Factory app? or can I just move it to USB right away?)

That said, it still will be valuable to many people to continue to strive for both a YouTube app, and the ability to export directly to Youtube accounts without needing to go through USB, simply because it is much more convenient than having to go to USB first if you’re not interested in doing so.

Regardless, really excited for the support the PS4 is getting with this pretty substantial update!

What I really hope for is being able to play as soon as 12:01AM EST hits. I live in CST so I could atleast play an hour earlier! well I assume this because when I preordered MLB 14 the show. It told me that you can download this game at 12:01AM EST May 6 or think preload I don’t remember. But I do hope I can play before 12AM CST.

Things I would like to see added to the UI:

Folder System – Sometime of way to categories your content into folder, the way it works now its a tad cumbersome when scrolling(Mind you its fast but still LOL)

Dynamic Background – I know it would be tough to do it like the PS3 but how about maybe just particle effect or dancing lights… maybe even just different color palettes like on the PS3 that change monthly and at night gets a bit darker.

MP3 Support – How am I suppose to clean my home without this?? LOL

“PSBFF” notifications – You get to choose who you see sign on or offline(I don’t want to see everyone since the friends list is so huge now). Also, When they post something, stream, start playing a title or even earn a trophy would be a dope addition.

For a temporary solution for just watching YouTube, you guys can go to youtube (enter the url, I would but moderation…) and then just add /tv to the end. Then you’ll get an overlay like the PS3 app. (which I hope the PS4 app is not like, I hate that app’s UI).

+ hOoDnErD on April 16th, 2014 at 9:40 pm said:

(Continued)
Same game notifications – If you and one of your friends is playing the same game, I feel like it should alert you to this.

Opaque menus – When in game and you get a notification for a party, trophy, etc… you shouldn’t be taken out of the game but to access this content. Also, could be used for Music Unlimited and MP3(Whenever that comes back LOL)

Notification noises from controller – When you get a invite, message or a trophy the speaker on the controller should give a chime.

A “True” profile – We have a “semi” profiles but I feel like since the PS4 is more social than ever, players deserve a real profile page to match the consoles abilities. (Example: Facebook or G+)

I think thats all I got for now… Keep up the good work! It’s a marathon, not a sprint ;)

Features I want, in order from the highest priority to the lowest:

1. MP3 support to allow listening to music while in game. (Man, this would have been AMAZING to have for Trials Fusion. Shame.)

2. Ability to upload clips directly to Twitter via PS4. (The USB feature is nice, but I hope this is added as well one day.)

3. Ability to change PSN ID.. This one’s less for me, and more for my fellow Playstation Nation. I know many of us suffer from poorly chosen PSN IDs. We were so young, Sony. So young. :'(

Library, please allow sorting. Needing to go through every single thing you purchase isn’t ideal. *ESPECIALLY* demos. I refuse to download any PS4 demos because of how the library works. It’s bad enough seeing apps on the library, when they’re already easy to get to. Unlike games.

PS Store, I have a lot of issues with it not opening. Will this update address that? I don’t know what it is, but I have to restart my PS4 in order for the store to actually load up. This happens in-game as well, so buying DLC through a game isn’t possible. It’s not my internet either, because the app simply won’t load yet I could watch Netflix for the next 20 hours. It only seems to have an issue after I’ve done something else on PS4. Like played a game, or used Netflix. If I go straight to the store, I never have an issue though. I don’t recall ever having the issue early on in the PS4’s life cycle (last year), but it’s a frequent issue now.

And sorting through screenshots is broken, often times the images won’t load up and it’ll lag when trying to exit. Sometimes it’ll even crash my PS4. Will this update address that at all?

- combining clips – YES! that’s exactly what i wanted. i’m also happy about the other features as well. maybe now i’ll finally be able to make that gaming channel that i’ve been wanting to do for years. money for a DVR, time for editing videos, and a computer capable of doing the editing had always turned me away from it, but it’s just getting easier and easier with the ps4! can’t wait to see the demo and “how it works” videos later. as for the dynamic themes, how about some color changes like on the ps3? blue is very nice, but my favorite is the light purple.

P.S.
i know USB support means we’ll inadvertently be able to post to youtube, but youtube uploading right from the ps4 is what we really want ;)

While viewing screenshots, can you add in the options menu for screenshots/videos a “share” option. I know there’s the share button, and if you hold it then it’ll share it, but I always instinctively go to options to get to options. Because sharing, from the list of screens/videos seems more like it would be in the options menu. Because, to me, that makes sense.

Options in a lot of menus doesn’t do what I believe it should. I don’t have any other specific examples off the top of my head though.

Also, please add the sharing options in the actual system settings. At least 3 times I’ve forgotten how to view them and change them, because it’s not very intuitive.

can we IMPORT videos?

Let’s say I use an external game capture card, record a long video on my PC, then want to export that to the PS4(as opposed to PS4 exporting to thumbdrive, I import via thumbdrive)

Is this possible?

If anyone’s wondering why I would want to do that:
I’d love to be able to share videos both on youtube AND post them on my PS4Share wall….being able to edit those videos in SHAREfactory wouldn’t hurt either.

Sorry for all the comments, just one last comment though. Mostly about twitch/ustream/streaming.

Is twitch going to find a better solution for the hideous black bar that comes up to block notifications? Or is that you guys who determine it? (I don’t watch ustream videos, so don’t know if it’s also on there or not, but I’d assume it is) There has to be a better way to block that stuff out than what you currently use. That black bar isn’t even a solid black bar, it’s hideous and unnecessarily large.

Oh and maybe ban PlayRoom from being streamable from the PS4 OS itself. I know twitch already blocked it themselves, but ustream hasn’t. And it is surely in Sony’s best interest to address the (surely) known issue with it. (while ustream is probably lagging on doing something because they’ll lose most people to twitch without it)

Being able to actually subscribe/follow people via the PS4 app would be nice. And being able to block people would also be nice. Basically more options you’d find when viewing twitch/ustream on the websites. If possible.
