Jamestown Plus Coming to PS4 This Summer

After playing a round of Jamestown, it’s probably not surprising to hear that Final Form Games is run by two brothers who grew up playing video games in the early 90’s. We spent our Summers plugging quarters into Street Fighter II in the arcades, and our Saturday mornings sitting on the couch, playing games together.

But as fond as those memories may be, many of the games that featured the word “co-op” on the box (or arcade cabinet) during that era were a real let-down for us. Simultaneous play is not necessarily cooperative, and co-op has come a long way since arcade ruled the Earth. We’re living in a post-Left 4 Dead, post-Rock Band world, and sometime in 2009, we decided to stop waiting for someone else to apply a few of the many design innovations of the past twenty years to the humble shoot-em-up genre.

To wit:

  • For us, co-op was about pulling each other’s fat out of the fire when all seemed lost, and celebrating the heartbreaking almost-made-it defeats just as much as the skin-of-our-teeth victories. A great co-op game would be designed to facilitate memorable cooperative triumphs (And failures!) at every turn.
  • We wanted to make co-op games where players of different skill levels could have fun with each other, without wishing they didn’t have someone along to slow them down (or, conversely, to make them feel inadequate).
  • Win or lose, we wanted our players to do it together.

Jamestown Plus on PS4

So we roped in our friend Hal, hung up a shingle, and set out to make the co-op games we used to dream about as kids. We started with a project called Jamestown.

Of course, our dream was to release Jamestown on consoles, but 2009 was a different time and we simply couldn’t swing it with our small team and limited resources. So we did the only thing we could: we poured everything we had into making 4-player co-op on the PC feel as close to console gaming as we possibly could.

After releasing the game in 2011, we made the happy discovery that many gamers on the PC, Mac, and Linux were excited to play a game like ours on their personal computer… but we never really shook the feeling that Jamestown was a console game that we happened to release on the PC first.

Jamestown Plus on PS4

A lot can happen in five years. With this latest generation of hardware, it’s more viable than ever to develop console games as an indie developer. In the wake of the original game’s critical success, and with a ton of encouragement and support from the nice folks at PlayStation, we’ve decided the time is right to finally bring Jamestown to console.

We’re calling it Jamestown Plus, and you’ll be able to play it on your PS4 this Summer.

Jamestown Plus will contain the entire original experience, but we’re also hard at work on a lot of cool new content to celebrate the console release:

  • New ships, replete with innovative special attacks and customizable weapon systems!
  • New levels, taking players on a swashbuckling adventure to the mysterious Martian moons of Phobos and Deimos!
  • A new chapter of the Jamestown story that spans space and time, adds new dimension to established characters and locations, and finishes what the original game started.

We want Jamestown Plus to be the definitive, be-all, end-all, director’s cut, remastered, extended edition of the game. When the three of us sat down to make a co-op shoot-em-up back in 2009, it was always our hope that one day we would bring it to console. This Summer, that dream finally becomes a reality.

If you’re new to Jamestown, we hope you check it out on PS4, and enjoy playing it as much as we do! And if you played the original: thank you. We hope the next chapter will have been worth the wait.

  • I enjoyed this on PC, but for some reason I never got around to finishing it. Pretty sure I’ll be picking this up when it becomes available.

    • There will be much more to finish in this version across the board. Hope you enjoy playing with all the new stuff! :)

  • If only my arcade stick worked on PS4 :( Oh well, still buying this!

  • Oh my god. A shmup, I love you guys and girls !

    • Yes, that’s what we like to hear! Hope you have fun with the co-op scoring system and scoreboards. :)

  • Nice to hear your story. Seems like a perfect fit for PS4!

P.S. Going to do anything fun with the DS4 lightbar? Towerfall used it to match player colors which ended up being a subtle but terrific thing.

    • We are so excited to put this out for console, it’s hard to fully express. :)

As for DS4 light bar: yes, we are using it! Each player’s controller light will match the in-game colors. Should make it easier to play when people are passing controllers around, or when trying to explain to new players who they are on-screen.

  • I loved this game on PC.

Quick thought though: the menus are easier to navigate with a mouse on PC obviously and I had some trouble using them with the controller until I got used to it. Are you going to modify them to be more easily navigated via controller?

    • Yes, we are planning to revisit the UI to make it easier to navigate. We want it to require less fine motor control, while still capturing the atmosphere and character of our sailpunk fantasy world.

  • Please consider a Vita release!

    and Cross-Play (and Cross-Buy)

-finished this on Steam, would love to play on the go!-

    • My goodness, so much excitement about Vita! We don’t have any Vita plans at present, but we’ll see how the PS4 version goes and take things from there. :)

  • OHHH YES!!! So buying this again!
Any chance for a Vita Port :o?! Would love to play it on the go!

  • loved this on pc. insta-buy from me. would love to see it on vita too!

  • safe to assume the co-op is online, right?

    • Oh, how we do wish it was! Sadly, it’s looking unlikely at this point. :(

We’ve tried to make it happen a few times now, but you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to port a local-only game to online multiplayer when it wasn’t designed that way in the first place! Not to mention, Jamestown is a twitchy, low-latency game where a single frame of error often means the difference between life and death.

That said, a big part of why we’re excited about PS4 is how much better it is for local co-op than PC. It will be way easier to get a local multiplayer game to happen with controllers, couch, and a big screen than it ever was with the original PC version. :)

  • The game looks like it will be a blast to play. Will definitely keep an eye on it.

  • I loved this game on PC! I bought for a bunch of my friend as well.

I know your team is small, any chance of a future Vita port?

This game on the go with that screen…

    :::drools:::

  • Its a 5 year old game. Yay. And not only is this a port, but people want ANOTHER port of it to vita? Jeez.

    • Three years… but it’s still a fair point. :) This concern is exactly why we’re adding so much new content and working to make the original game even more polished. We want Jamestown+ to be a significantly expanded and improved experience, much more than a straight port.

  • out of all the games announced today this gets me the most excited. love shooters.

  • thanks for the reply. i can see why online wouldn’t be feasible. was just wishful thinking on my part. still, day one purchase for sure.

  • Tim: please ignore #13…he’s trolled every indie blog post tonight. No matter what you do, you won’t please him

I can say that I honestly love the look of your game. I would also like to echo the sentiments of my fellow gamers above requesting a Vita version of the game as well. Good luck to you in releasing this game on the PS4!

  • I was hoping to play as a cult leader.

  • The only PC exclusive indie that I wanted on Vita. Please, consider a Vita version.

  • Hey Mike,

This looks really nice. I hope to see this in June or July.

    Cheers!!!

  • Super happy to hear you’ll use the lightbar to match your colors ingame. :D I was hoping that would be the case.

Really happy this is coming, love the game on PC.

I wish it could come to PS Vita as well, there aren’t very many shoot ’em ups on there. It makes me sad, but I’m good with PS4 too. Just happy this is coming. So I can play through it again. :3
