Roundup: 12 New Indies Coming to PlayStation

Hello PlayStation fans! We held an awesome event at our offices yesterday, and in case you missed some of our new game announcements I wanted to round them up for you below. Also note that all of these titles will be making their console debut on PlayStation platforms.

Independent developers are continuing to create incredible games for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, and we can’t wait to bring them to you throughout this year and beyond.

Apotheon (PS4)

“Looking back, making our upcoming action sidescroller Apotheon in the visage of ancient Greek pottery seemed like an obvious choice. Everything is already there. The 2D perspective, the awesome narrative and setting possibilities, heroes fighting monsters and magical goat-men with no pants… All we really had to do was figure out how to make the art on those pots move around and make it into an interesting game.”

Axiom Verge (PS4/PS Vita)

“Axiom Verge is a retro-styled 2D “metroidvania” action-adventure, inspired by such classics as Rygar, Contra, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master, and, of course, Metroid. But it also gives you power over glitches like those found in classic games, allowing you to scramble enemies, corrupt environments, and enter hidden areas.”

Chasm (PS4)

“In Chasm, players take up the role of Daltyn, a young soldier sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a mining crew in the remote mountain town of Karthas. Upon arrival you learn the town has been cut off from the outside world by supernatural forces. Now trapped, you are left with no option but to explore the mines below the town and uncover the source of the disturbances. Only by gaining new special abilities, evading dangerous traps, and defeating hordes of deadly enemies can you hope to save Karthas — and possibly the world!”

Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants (PS4)

“New dangers threaten our intrepid hero. And they happen to come in a variety of ghastly shapes and sizes.”

Drifter (PS4/PS Vita)

“Drifter is an open-world, sandbox, space trading game with a procedurally-generated galaxy 100,000 light years across, made up of tens of thousands of star systems to explore and features an original soundtrack by composer Danny Baranowsky.”

Escape Goat 2 (PS4)

“The theme of Escape Goat 2 is transformation. As you manipulate hidden machinery, walls move around and blocks settle into new places. Things look different when you’re done with the room (especially if you employ your mighty horns to their best use). And you have a remarkable companion to help you on your journey…”

Ironclad Tactics (PS4)

“Ironclad Tactics is a fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in the American Civil War… with robots! Although it’s reminiscent of the tactics games and collectible card games that we’re all familiar with, we’ve done a few things that make the game stand out.”

Jamestown+ (PS4)

“Simultaneous play is not necessarily cooperative, and co-op has come a long way since arcade ruled the Earth. We’re living in a post-Left 4 Dead, post-Rock Band world, and sometime in 2009, we decided to stop waiting for someone else to apply a few of the many design innovations of the past twenty years to the humble shoot-em-up genre.”

Nidhogg (PS4)

“We have the most fun playing Nidhogg in front of our TV with friends. Sharing a TV and controllers is way more comfortable than crowding around someone’s desk and sharing a keyboard. Exclusive to the PS4 version, the built-in tournament mode now indicates your fencer’s color on DualShock 4′s light bar… how cool is that?!”

Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition (PS4)

“Skulls of the Shogun is a mash-up of turn-based strategy and fighting-game flare, scientifically engineered for lightning-quick rounds, thoughtful strategic play, and a frequently inappropriate sense of humor with its tongue planted firmly in cheek. And whether you’re into single or multiplayer, Skulls has you covered.”

Spelunky (PS4)

Spelunky on PS4

“We’re once again teaming up with BlitWorks, who did a great job on bringing the game to PS3 and PS Vita. For PS4, we want to do even more — like bump up the graphics to 1080p, let players upload replays to the leaderboards, add more social features to the Daily Challenge, and otherwise take advantage of the PS4′s unique hardware.”

Starwhal: Just the Tip (PS4/PS3)

“The game mechanics and controls in Starwhal are not complex — navigate your narwhal to tag your opponent’s heart and protect your own. Of course, the narwhals themselves wiggle all over the place in spastic fits of salty marine protest, but therein lies at least half the fun.”

  • It would be nice if some of these indies were actually “new” and not just ports ( of stuff I already own) , but at least it’s better than nothing at all.

  • ‘ve had my eyes on Chasm, Drifter, Escape Goat 2, Nidhogg, and Starwhal (“Just the Tip”, oh lawd), and now got ’em on Apotheon, Axiom Verge and Jamestown+ (“Plus”?). The thumbnail for Don’t Starve, with his distraught face…my heart goes out to him.

    Ah, but I still need a PS4…

  • We have enough of indie games.

  • Where is Source? I thought that was one of the 12 indies listed today

  • I just did a video about all these 2d games coming to the PS4 on my YouTube. How does everyone else feel about this. Some of these games look cool but others just don’t appeal to me.

  • LuiSpartanMIMIMI

I’m tired of seen just indie on the Vita side. That’s it. Vita is just a controller to PS4 and an indie portable.

Where the heck are the AAA games?

I remember back in 2012 where in a interview, Sony said they did not want the Vita to just have ports of other console games. So far what we have here? Sly Collection(PS3-2010), God of War Collection(PS3-2009), Jak & Daxter Collection(PS3-2012), Ratchet & Clank Collection(Rumor, but almost certain-PS3-2013).

What true AAA Vita games we got last year? Just Tearaway and Killzone Mercenary.

Sony, It’s clear you cannot handle two consoles. I think you should step back from portable market and have all your resources on PS4.

    Vita is DEAD.

  • Thanks for making the videos avilable for Vita users to see them.

Interested in a couple of them, though I will only buy Cross Buys.

Too bad Axiom and Chasm aren’t.

Will Also wait for sales though since all the titles I bought last year went IGC.

  • OuterSpaceJunky

Thank you Sony for making your platform so inviting to indie developers. I will likely buy half of these games. The half that I won’t buy, I’m still excited that there is someone else out there excited about a game they will love.

    Ignore the haters.

  • @ein_nineteenth
I think some are port, others are new (coming at the same time than PC) and at least one of them (Axiom Verge) is set to release on PS4-V and not on PC, for now. Might be wrong on that since not all of them have a release date.

  • Red_Panda_Gamer

    INDIE GAMES 4 EVER!

    LONG LIVE INDIE GAMES!

  • will buy all :P and thanks for more spelunky :)

  • Sorry I don’t know where to report issues with the PlayStation 4. ever since I updated to version 1.70 I’ve been giving a lot of random errors earlier today my PlayStation4 randomly turned off when switching a user so I just want to be known to fix the problem thank you.

  • I wish more than just two of them were announced for vita, but aside from that they all look like great games. Looking forward to them.

  • Retro-looking indie games are well and good, but is this really the best use of next-gen technology? Sony, PLEASE give me some reasons to buy a PS4. All you have served up so far are PC ports like these, and sandbox games (most of which are available on last gen anyways). Besides Second Son and Killzone, where are the PS4 exclusives? Serve up a meaty RPG or some action / adventure games that I cannot already get on the PS3 and you will have my $400 plus tax. I really REALLY want some good reasons to buy this next-gen system. Hopefully it will not be another year until you can deliver…

  • Would like to see Ironclad Tactics on Vita too :(

  • Most of them look good except that Nidhogg. How can Sony allows this game to be on their systems?

  • Indiestation!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!

  • Please make demos for these games. Your recent tend of charging$15-20 for tthese types of games makes it impossible to try them all.

  • #6 Vita is not dead, it’s rising. Unless you don’t play Japanese games.

  • its ridiculous seeing people complain about indie games. for one AAA games take a long time to make compared to indie games. all the major developers are making games for ps4 but the majority of them are not supporting the vita. thats not sony’s fault. the best selling vita games still sell under a million copies because of the lack of install base. atleast the vita is getting games at all. the vita is pretty big in japan and this is why its mainly getting jrpgs and indies. without them we would have no games on the vita at this point. and although this is a sony console they should have their first party teams focusing on ps4. they cant allocate their developers to be making vita games instead of ps4 games or else there would probably be a bigger loss in revenue. im thankful that atleast there are indie games being made for vita and the indie games are all really good. as for the ps4, you guys just need to be patient because it will take bethesda, activision, ubisoft, sony and ea a long time to release any games forr ps4.

  • Just look at all those Next-Gen titles that were the major reason for launching a Next-Gen console in the first place ..

    OH WAIT

  • Starwhal: Just the Tip looks weird as hell…. those Sword Fish poking each other up the butt or dolphines with needle noses ? ?

  • Most indie games suck. Only 1 out of every 5 are decent… What is the deal with the ironclad video? It doesn’t work on her or on YouTube.

  • On here….lol

  • These look fantastic.

It sounds as though most are re-routing their frustration for the lack of PS4 “AAA” games towards indies…as if indie games are preventing “AAA” games from releasing.

  • @PainOfSarrow lol they are narwhals… Google it

  • you guys forgot to mention a kemco game that will be brought by natsume which is called end of aspiration and was originally released for android phones….

  • The people complaining about indies must be on their 1st console launch. Normally how things go is for the first 6-10 months you have nothing but day one games, some sports games and up ports from 3rd parties previous gen games until one spring title breaks the mold and then back to waiting for next fall.

Let’s be serious here sony is working on games and so are 3rd parties, they just take awhile to finish. No reassures are being wasted on indie games. They do however provide you with something to play until the next big game drops. Let’s face it infamous, mlb the show, and the next 3rd party game is all your getting until summer. With indies or without. Think the grass is greener else where. Xbox had pvz titian fall and they’re waiting on the next multi platform 3rd party game we are.

What’s that? Glad you’ve got new indies to play I between instead of nothing at all? I sure am. I’ll be enjoying a few of these until watch dogs launches and then after that a few more before the last of us hd.

    • E3 is just around the corner, too, so there is likely to be a lot of AAA love announced then.

  • I like some indie games, however, I’m much more interested to hear news about the interesting new indies that were announced leading up the launch of PS4. I am talking about Rime, Everybody’s gone to the rapture and Secret Ponchos. It IS nice that we are getting Transistor this month.

Also, you guys left out Source, which was the most interesting game announced yesterday.

Additionally, I’ll like to see a feature on this awesome indie game coming to PS4: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/midgarstudio/hover-revolt-of-gamers?ref=banner

However, Sony needs to focus on getting new indies on PS4 not just ports of old games. For example, Cloudbuilt: http://coilworks.se/cloudbuilt/

  • I’m honestly starting to hate the PS4. All of the indie games filling up my hard drive, stealing time away from my house duties. Now 12 more great looking games? I guess they weren’t kidding at last year’s E3 when they said PS4 would be the home of indie games. Great job and keep em’ coming!

  • A lot of these guys complaining must have missed the part where he said these were announced during an indie event. If anything we should take it as a good sign since this should mean they’ll be left with more time to showcase AAA games during E3.

  • I’m glad we’re getting some $.99 games on PS4

  • this is starting to make me mad, i like indie games but these ones all look retarded an waste of ps4 power, don’t starve an spelunky are the only ones that look good, what is that don’t starve? a add on or a new game?

  • PrimeroIncognito

syzygyC said: “It sounds as though most are RE-ROUTING THEIR FRUSTRATION for the lack of PS4 “AAA” games TOWARDS INDIES…as if indie games are preventing “AAA” games from releasing.”

    Precisely.

Even if there were no indies at all, the PS4 would still have the same amount of AAA titles. These dorks don’t seem to understand that games take time to produce, and the more “high-tech” they are, the longer it will take. It’s actually what they asked for, and now they’re whining about it.

  • I like that the ps4 can bring soo many good indy games, but tbh, thats not the reason why i purchased the ps4. DriveClub which was supposed to be a launch title has been delayed a year from the original time that it was supposed to launch. while killzone and infamous were very good looking games, they lacked something, and felt rather bland to to me. So far the best game was by far assassins creed, and that was a multi system launch. I didn’t have to purchase the ps4 for that! Watch Dogs looks sweet, and i have my preorder paid for that game, but thats a multiplatform game too. i am starting to have a buyers remorse when it comes to the ps4.

  • Now give me a sort function for my library of games!

    This all looks awesome!

  • Smaller games are all that I have time for, let alone memory card / hard drive space for, so keep ’em coming…

  • UGH so sick of the whining.

Apotheon and Axiom Verge for me! Maybe Nidhogg…

  • I really like the first three games, Apotheon, Axiom Verge, and Chasm.

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ TomHoang

Those are the exact 3 games I’m interested in, too. :D

    And maybe Drifter.

  • Is Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants a stand-alone sequel or is it DLC for Don’t Starve?

  • Chasm all the way. It’s looking a lot like one of my favorite game of all time, Castlevania SOTN. I relaly hope it can like up to this! ^_^

Would be awesome to get it on PS+, I would absolutly love that!

  • man this is awesome news and some of these games look incredible. nevermind what some people say. thanks. 12 games announced is a good thing any day of the week.

any update on N+ and when that’s coming?

  • THIS^^^^^^^

PLEASE GIVE US A RELEASE DATE FOR N++!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish more of these were heading to PS3 as well.

  • Ok lots of indie games almost to many to pick from so we need a purchase plan like

    3 for $40
    5 for $55
    7 for $63
    12 for $84

give us a huge incentive to buy them all

  • As Archer would say, “just the tip!” LOL
But seriously, nice to see so many indie games coming to Sony hardware.
For everyone complaining about indie games, I don’t think you understand the business. The next-gen consoles have a game development cycle and cost that’s 3 times what the previous PS3 and Xbox360 games had. Don’t hold your breath waiting for too many AAA games, and you’re going to see a lot of multi-platform releases. It’s the only way to defray such high costs.
The only AAA exclusives will come from Sony and Microsoft owned studios.

  • PLEEEEEEEASE bring us Crawl from Powerhoof to the PS3/PS4. It is probably the best party game ever made!! I don`t remember the last time I was so hyped over a game.
(and now that I`m talking about party games, Samurai Gunn wouldn`t be a bad idea…).

    also, comment #44 is right.
At least once a year you guys should do some “Indie Sale” and do something similar as purse317 said.

  • Looks to be a truck load of crap heading our way. While there are a few far off games coming (like end of year) the system is already loaded down with crappy indies. these games are made by mom & pop developers who are probably turned down from mobile who now call PS4 home. or fresh out of school wannabe game designers who have only the core knowledge of how real games are made. Don’t get me wrong, I like giving a few indies a try but most seem like a waste of time and money. You know why there’s so many indies coming? because the PS4 is no more than a glorified PC with last years hardware. Almost all games out so far can be had on the PS3 for $10 less with little to no difference in quality. I loved the PS3 to death having owned 4 over it’s lifetime and wouldn’t trade it for the world, but this thing they call the PS4 and where greatness awaits is a joke. but whats a gamer to do, there’s not much on the other side of the fence either (save for Titanfall). Maybe now that I’m older I’ve lost what it meant to be on the cutting edge of technology but games like TowerFall are down right laughable and I know for a fact my eye sight isn’t that bad when I say that game looks like the poster child for crap…!

  • V8_R3L3NTL3SS_1

O boy more garbage indie games. Can’t believe how excited you guys at sony are to be putting all these trash games on your brand new nex-gen system, these games belong on Nintendo.
