Roundup: 12 New Indies Coming to PlayStation

Adam Boyes's Avatar + Posted by Adam Boyes on May 01, 2014 // Vice President, Developer and Publisher Relations, SCEA

Hello PlayStation fans! We held an awesome event at our offices yesterday, and in case you missed some of our new game announcements I wanted to round them up for you below. Also note that all of these titles will be making their console debut on PlayStation platforms.

Independent developers are continuing to create incredible games for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, and we can’t wait to bring them to you throughout this year and beyond.

Apotheon (PS4)

“Looking back, making our upcoming action sidescroller Apotheon in the visage of ancient Greek pottery seemed like an obvious choice. Everything is already there. The 2D perspective, the awesome narrative and setting possibilities, heroes fighting monsters and magical goat-men with no pants… All we really had to do was figure out how to make the art on those pots move around and make it into an interesting game.”

Axiom Verge (PS4/PS Vita)

“Axiom Verge is a retro-styled 2D “metroidvania” action-adventure, inspired by such classics as Rygar, Contra, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master, and, of course, Metroid. But it also gives you power over glitches like those found in classic games, allowing you to scramble enemies, corrupt environments, and enter hidden areas.”

Chasm (PS4)

“In Chasm, players take up the role of Daltyn, a young soldier sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a mining crew in the remote mountain town of Karthas. Upon arrival you learn the town has been cut off from the outside world by supernatural forces. Now trapped, you are left with no option but to explore the mines below the town and uncover the source of the disturbances. Only by gaining new special abilities, evading dangerous traps, and defeating hordes of deadly enemies can you hope to save Karthas — and possibly the world!”

Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants (PS4)

“New dangers threaten our intrepid hero. And they happen to come in a variety of ghastly shapes and sizes.”

Drifter (PS4/PS Vita)

“Drifter is an open-world, sandbox, space trading game with a procedurally-generated galaxy 100,000 light years across, made up of tens of thousands of star systems to explore and features an original soundtrack by composer Danny Baranowsky.”

Escape Goat 2 (PS4)

“The theme of Escape Goat 2 is transformation. As you manipulate hidden machinery, walls move around and blocks settle into new places. Things look different when you’re done with the room (especially if you employ your mighty horns to their best use). And you have a remarkable companion to help you on your journey…”

Ironclad Tactics (PS4)

“Ironclad Tactics is a fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in the American Civil War… with robots! Although it’s reminiscent of the tactics games and collectible card games that we’re all familiar with, we’ve done a few things that make the game stand out.”

Jamestown+ (PS4)

“Simultaneous play is not necessarily cooperative, and co-op has come a long way since arcade ruled the Earth. We’re living in a post-Left 4 Dead, post-Rock Band world, and sometime in 2009, we decided to stop waiting for someone else to apply a few of the many design innovations of the past twenty years to the humble shoot-em-up genre.”

Nidhogg (PS4)

“We have the most fun playing Nidhogg in front of our TV with friends. Sharing a TV and controllers is way more comfortable than crowding around someone’s desk and sharing a keyboard. Exclusive to the PS4 version, the built-in tournament mode now indicates your fencer’s color on DualShock 4′s light bar… how cool is that?!”

Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition (PS4)

“Skulls of the Shogun is a mash-up of turn-based strategy and fighting-game flare, scientifically engineered for lightning-quick rounds, thoughtful strategic play, and a frequently inappropriate sense of humor with its tongue planted firmly in cheek. And whether you’re into single or multiplayer, Skulls has you covered.”

Spelunky (PS4)

Spelunky on PS4

“We’re once again teaming up with BlitWorks, who did a great job on bringing the game to PS3 and PS Vita. For PS4, we want to do even more — like bump up the graphics to 1080p, let players upload replays to the leaderboards, add more social features to the Daily Challenge, and otherwise take advantage of the PS4′s unique hardware.”

Starwhal: Just the Tip (PS4/PS3)

“The game mechanics and controls in Starwhal are not complex — navigate your narwhal to tag your opponent’s heart and protect your own. Of course, the narwhals themselves wiggle all over the place in spastic fits of salty marine protest, but therein lies at least half the fun.”

Curve Studios seems to be having no problem with cross buy across ALL 3 systems, namely PS3 included. The Swapper, MouseCraft, and Titan Attacks all coming within the next few months for PS4, PS3, and Vita.. I still own a PS3 and buy games for PS3 and I’m not planning on upgrading to PS4 anytime soon. So if you want my money you’ll have to support PS3 to get it. Sorry.

after seeing some dumb comments about people complaining about indies, i had to log in and say thanks to the team that is doing the effort of bringing indie games to the PS4, they are really great games and extremely creative.

So thanks to Shane, Nick, Adam and all of the other people behind the scenes doing the work to make this happen.

I will definitely be supporting this effort by buying probably all of the games on this list.

I am seriously tired of seeing all the 8-bit graphics indies coming to PS4. Seems like every PC indie developer is porting their game (bargain bin price or humble bundled by now) to PS4 for another revenue stream. I know there are good indies games out there and there are people who like them, but to many the PS4 has become the next-gen refugee camp for ancient-gen games.

It probably takes more than 10x the effort of making a low-end-presentation, single-scene-per-level indie game than to make a full retail game (AAA or much lower), so that ratio is understandable, but as proportionally they should each be given 1/10 the limelight. So bundling them together in one post instead of bombarded with indie news after indie news (as we just saw in the blog last 2 days) is a good idea. Perhaps you should do just one single blog post on “Indie Updates for the Week” and spare us all the individual posts (and spare us the impression that the PS4 is an 8-bit machine).

Wow, I can’t believe all the complaining going on. I have no doubt that Sony will bring the big guns when it comes to AAA exclusives, they haven’t let me down yet and not to mention Second Son just came out and is amazing! In the mean time keep bringing these awesome, creative indie games. I have my eye on Axiom, Chasm, Drifter (dat soundtrack!), N++, Transistor, The Witness, HyperLight Drifter, and many many more. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing these awesome games to the platform and keep up the good work.

Definitely the games I’m NOT buying. To me, these games are a bad taste. Didn’t care for the PSP minis, don’t care for these Indie non sense from guys struggling to get into a major game studio. I’m not waiting for PS4 AAAs and play these games to kill time. I buy games on other consoles to the point where Indies are a waste of time and money. Down with Indies, they are the shovelware of this generation.

I miss when Plus offered AAA games.

Also, you NEED curation and quality control on these indie titles, or your brand will suffer. You need to put quality over quantity.

If your tired of all the “whining” and complaining about indie games then I suggest you either don’t read the ps blog or put your big boy/girl pants on and deal with it cause it isn’t going anywhere.

Is it so hard to understand that most people expect some level of… Quality from releases on the Ps4? With so much hype behind a console you can’t tell me this is what you envisioned when you (or maybe it was your parents) put your hard earned money down for the next gen experience. So many of you seem content at what we are receiving I have to wonder… Are you on the payroll for some company contracted out to leave positive feedback?

I’ve never been one to tell someone what their taste to be but you have gotta be kidding me. Seriously? You been waiting for these games? Some of them are good games… But niddhog? Axiom verge? Yeah? Really?

65

+ TrueLordX on May 1st, 2014 at 5:55 pm said:

If those are games your are excited about, fine… But ask yourself why the HELL they belong on the PS4? For that matter why doesn’t every indie and retro game… Since pong till now… Crappy or not… Get released for the 4. Why not right? It’s not harming anyone… OR Sony could actually worry about bring you quality content instead of shoving anything and everything at you to distract from the problems.

And I’m not saying there are no quality indies. But why the hell don’t we get things that make sense… Standly Parable or Gone Home… Or more like Don’t Starve Or Mercenaries Kings… all this other garbage belongs on the vita at best…or the Ouja, you know… The console built for all this shovel ware.

This is getting out of hand, indie games are fine…and it’s great that indie developers have a friend in sony… But the ps4 is not 400 Nintendo/Atari emulator … Any more than the PS3 makes coffee. Why for the love of all that is holy shouldn’t we be vocal about not being happy with games like these.

And we are all gamers, on the same side…for the most part, so lighten the @$&k up please… This ain’t the “brown nosers only blog”.

Nah, it’s just of all of them, it’s the only one that doesn’t particularly interest me.
But yeah, there’s too many complaints about the indies being on the PS4.

Are PC gamers jealous the PS4 is getting their games now?
I think they are. They wouldn’t be hurt over this if they weren’t complaining.

The PS3 had it’s fair share of great indie games.
I don’t know why it would cease on the PS4? There isn’t any reason.

Although, I do think there should be some kind of quality control.
As you all know, that is what the Atari 2600 and the ET cartridges lacked tremendously.
They ended up buried in a waste land.
Yeah, in some case, I just don’t want rotten apples to have a negative impact on other games of better quality.

I would Hardly ever refuse any game, but there should still be some standard.
“Like charging 10$ for just 1 level of any game completed in 2 minutes without any replay value”

We all want more games, we just don’t want junk games.

Nintendo fixed that with people actually playing the games before they get approved “played by more than 1 person since people have different opinions.”.

I’m not a hipster, blind indie-worshipping gamer, and I do want games that truly show the potential and capacity of my PS4

But resorting to despicable denigration and saying things like “Down with Indies, they are the shovelware of this generation” is truly beyond reason.

The PS4 is still in its infancy. It hasn’t gone through its first post-launch E3 period yet.

These people are trying to get a platform whence they could launch and jumpstart their career in the gaming industry. They are real people who, irrespective of the comparatively ‘non-conformal’ graphics of their games, work hard and invest emotionally into their games.

It’s easy to disparage something as fictional as videogames because we forget there are real people behind it.

My only complaint is the lack of Platinum Trophy in these indie games. (serious!)

Not that they are not good but I don’t eat M&Ms for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (Yes, some of the yellow ones are better than the blues; the reds are the worst and there are always so many of them.) You don’t see blue #7453, #7454 and red #10375 listed individually on a restaurant menu, do you? They are M&Ms, it’s good that they are there (and some people are crazy about them), but M&Ms are M&Ms, you dump them all in a bag and have some when you need a snack. You don’t line them up and place them each on individual plate on the dinning table. You reserve the space, on the table and in your stomach, for proper meals.

Once again the whiners and complainers are out in full force again.

If you’re one of these people that are crying there are too many indies and not enough AAA games, then clearly you are impatient and bought the PS4 WAY too early. If there’s anyone to blame it’s yourselves. The consoles is not even a year old and yet you complain about the lack of games? You knew full well what the launch lineup would be and what games would be released over the course of the next few months. If you knew there weren’t many games coming out and you still bought then you are gullible.

And please stop judging games you never played. Calling indies crap when you know next to nothing about them makes you look like a whiny, ignorant child. Sometimes it makes me sad to know we game on the same consoles. I hope I never have to run into people like you online.

Grow up and have something called patience.

You know, I haven’t felt like slapping some sense lately, maybe I should start doing so and educate you while I’m at it:

You bought a console around its launch period!
Thanks, now go away!

No seriously, last I remember all other console launches did not have the lineup we are seeing now, soon after launch.

No matter the budget behind the game, it’s still a game.
You have played indies before.
Plenty of PS1 and PS2 games were indies but were not labeled as such then.

This triple-A game you all want, 6 months after a new console is out, is beyond belief.
If this is your first time with a console around launch then I don’t see a reason why you even need to come here and bring your hate upon folks that invite the variation and time filling these games are set to do so between bigger budget titles.

This is not taking away from your triple-A games, triple-A games are still being made.

These triple-A games take longer to make, they take longer to make, get that in your skull.

It’s not hard to look at a post and think to yourself, not interested.
Simple, don’t post, or bring to the conversation by posting what titles you are interested in instead of bringing hate.

Good? Now grow up.
Bye.

Please create a physical release bundle of the indie games coming to vita (could even do one for ps4) and call it “Indiestation: Collection”. Not only would it make it convenient to have a lot of these neat titles without taking up too much memory, it would also show how proud Sony is to have indie games on its consoles.

I had a PS3 and an Xbox 360 traded both in for the PS4. No regrets from the hardware side, PS4 is a great machine. What I’m having difficulty with is the sheer lack of choice for PS+ owners on the PS4 compared to the PS3. where are the full games?

When I had the PS3 I was rich in game content via PS+. Now we get a bunch mediocre games most of which aren’t worth the hard drive space they occupy, weak zombie or survival horror game or retro looking side scrollers.

C’mon Sony How about Killzone? or some of the other games that were available at launch. Put them on PS+!! for free!

The gaming industry is going through some major changes, you just have to read between the lines. I’ve always believed Sony is a company that values it’s fan base. I’m not expecting the new triple A titles to be rushed out the door. I’m expecting you to live up the initial momentum you generated with your initial ad campaign. I work hard for my money when I spend it on something, I expect value in return.

So, I went through all of the videos (except Spelunky, which had no video; but then we all know what Spelunky is). I have about a 10th of the skill and imagination that each of these guys (and gals) bring to the game, so I have great respect for Indie games and developers.

Having said that, the only games I did like are Apotheon and Escape Goat 2; all the others looked like games I’ve already played over and over on one console/platform or other. It may be argued that the same can be said about all the games but the ones that stay with you are the ones that bring a uniqueness along with the tried-and-tested, isnt that so.

Anyways, my point is that I wont spend any time or money on the rest – as much as I like the Indie genre, I also would like to spend wisely and I intend to begin somewhere lol…

Every single person I see complain about “too many indies” is another person who obviously did NOT watch Sony’s E3 conference last year. Or listen to any of their other conferences leading up to the PS4 launch, or read any of their press releases about how excited they were to be bring all these indies over to the PS community, thanks to the PC-like architecture of the PS4.

And yes, it is stupid to complain about “too many indies”. PSN is not going to run out of room for games. They are NOT impeding AAA games from coming out. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them being released. If they were not being made, there would simply be NO GAMES coming out on a regular basis for the PS4.

We do not need to hear how much you hate indies. Sony can see how many people read these articles, versus how many comments there are, versus how many negative comments there are (from the same limited group of users, no less). Not to mention how many sales these games manage compared to the AAA titles that are also available. If this was a business practice that wasn’t bearing fruit, it would end very quickly. Stop trying to dictate to the rest of the community what type of games we should be allowed to play and enjoy.
