Tales from the Borderlands: First Screenshots Revealed

One of the first things people say when they hear that Telltale is working on a Borderlands game is: “wait…what?”

After all, how does a game series that’s known for bazillions of guns morph into something like The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us? Why make a Borderlands game that’s not a first person shooter?

Because, if you pause to take a breath between shooting everything in sight and stealing your buddies’ loot in multiplayer, you’ll know that Borderlands features some amazing characters and stories in a world that’s rich in dark humor. Handsome Jack, Claptrap, Tiny Tina, Angel, Moxxi, Zer0… it’s a big list. We (Telltale) are all about compelling characters and stories, and we see an amazing opportunity to build on what Gearbox has created.

Gearbox’s world is huge. The main Borderlands games and the DLC have only scratched the surface; they’ve built a world that rivals Star Wars in its richness. That sounds like crazy hyperbole, but the details, the characters, and the history are all there. You just haven’t seen it all yet.

Pandora has a wealth of stories to offer, and Gearbox wants them told. Telltale is going to collaborate with you through the choices that you make to get some of those stories out there, and to create a brand new Borderlands experience. If you play Borderlands simply for the sake of shooting stuff, then you might not be a fan of Tales, but if you enjoy being on Pandora, hanging out with and finding out more about all of the amazing characters, and/or you’ve enjoyed what we did in The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, then this might be a game series for you.

What else can I say about this game series?

  • The loot you grab in Tales will be available to use in other areas of the Borderlands franchise
  • It’s an episodic series that’ll be $4.99 per episode (or you can save with the Season Pass)
  • Your choices matter and will help create YOUR version of the story across the season
  • The series takes place after the events of Borderlands 2. Handsome Jack is gone. Or is he? You might have seen the trailer we put out a while back
  • You’re going to play two different viewpoints. Rhys works for Hyperion; he’s a company man with grand ambitions that have been thrown off the rails. Fiona is a fast-talking con artist, with very few people left on Pandora she hasn’t swindled one way or another
  • They both have a very different opinion of the events that brought them together, and the only way to find out something near to the truth is to live their lives and make your own decisions

And the loot; don’t forget the loot!

  • As excited as i am for this game, i reallt wish Telltale would just concentrate on one game at a time. Even when they are rotating between Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us, i’ve encountered several glitches in season 2 episodes of Walking Dead. Episode 2 felt incredibly rushed. :(

  • I was interested before. But now that there’s loot I’m definitely getting this.

  • Hmmm, I think this IP has run its course.

  • @3 Maybe you’re right. I wouldn’t complain if 2 was the last game but I’m still excited for this and the Pre-Sequel.

  • No where in the post is a potential release date for the first episode. Kinda dilutes my interest a bit :/

  • Not sure how I feel about this wholeheartedly but I trust you guys over at Telltales deliver quality so I am sure I will try this game out.

  • I love TWD and TWAU so I’m very excited to see Telltale take on Borderlands! Borderlands 2 had an interesting story, beautiful world, and unique characters, so I think there’s plenty left to explore with this franchise. I hope the game will be available on PS4 too. :D

  • @1 I agree but for slightly different seasons; their ability to release on all promised platforms in a reasonable time frame seems to be severely compromised. Still no work on when wolf among us will release on Vita when it was originally announced that this would happen last fall.

  • I have fun with these games. Wolf Among Us is brilliant and the genre, on its own, offers a nice cerebral deviation from the typical cookie-cutter games I’m used to. I’m often hesitant, however, considering the Season Pass bundles, lately, haven’t been day-and-date with the first episode release. Can you ensure this (and Game of Thrones), don’t see similar delays in the Season Pass bundle option on the store publish for Tuesdays?

  • @3 Same goes to Yakuza series, if you don’t like the IP then don’t post here. I do enjoy Borderlands series & can’t wait for Tales from the Borderlands to come out.

  • This looks so awesome,As a fan of The Walking Dead,The Wolf Among Us and the Borderlands games,I can’t wait to play this Great job Telltale Games.

  • Is this only slated for the PS3 right now or is it also coming to the Vita and PS4?

  • I’m really hoping that this will be the first Telltale game released on the PS4. I love many of the Telltale games, but I have to admit, performance-wise, their engine has never been great on the PS3.

  • the engine runs at a 5 FPS on ps3

  • Love the Telltale games. Keep them coming!

  • Hello, Telltale Games. Thanks for stopping by and telling us about this game. It looks fun!

I am wondering, however, when you’re going to make adventures games again. You know, the kind that have puzzles in them? I really enjoyed the Sam and Max games and Tales of Monkey Island. I’d really like to play more games like that at some point.

    Thanks.

  • I’ll wait for PS4 Version on this one! C’mon Telltale I want to play it without freeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing! Thx.

  • I think its a new total game i liked

  • Same here, bought season passes for TWD season 1 & 2, WAU, but the performance issues are downright insulting. There’s no bigger mood breaker than having to start QTE sequences multiple times because the zombie has already bitten you before you even get any picture on screen. Your games are truly good, but PLEASE, hire someone who actually knows how to optimise assets and loading time.

  • Might be the first Telltale game I buy day one, assuming the season pass is available day one. ;)

  • Never played a Telltale game, but for Borderlands I’m in. I hope they are as good as everyone says they are!

  • after being a huge fan of BL1 (platinumed and bought all extensions), I was severely disappointed by BL2 : I’m a casual FPS gamer and BL1 difficulty was just right you could use different tactics, damage from enemies was not too much, at equal level you did good damage. BL2 is just a game for “professional” FPS gamers, insane damage and accuracy of enemies, the solo campaign is already difficult, but the MP is totally un-fun, in BL1 I could do missions at +2/+3 lvl and be useful, now at +1 it’s already hard, at +2 I don’t do any damage and I’m one shotted most of the time.

  • Hope it comes to PS4. Love your games Telltale, but the constant freezing and other issues on PS3 has gotten really old and annoying, especially since they’ve been happening since Sam and Max: TDP. Unfortunate that Walking Dead saves cant be transferred from PS3 to PS4 yet, because that’s pretty much the only reason I started Season 2 on PS3. I hope the “throw more hardware” bonus of the PS4 fixes a lot of the issues.

  • Really wish they would focus on one game at a time. Both the Walking Dead and the Wolf Among us suffer from technical issues and polish.

  • As a long-time Telltale fan, I agree with the others’ comments. Their games are buggier, and PlayStation platforms don’t get anywhere near the amount of improvements that iOS versions of their games get. To make matters worse, we also end up paying twice for PS3 and Vita versions, where iOS gamers only pay once to have the game on their iPad and iPhone.

Maybe this time will be different. Maybe this time the lip sync will actually work. Maybe this time there won’t be weird pauses where the audio stutters or cuts out compeltely during a critical scene in the story. Maybe the alternate language audio assets will be intelligible. Maybe we’ll get post-release update parity with other platforms and cross-buy like other developers do.

I understand that some of these things relate to Sony’s own policies and cost structures, but this stuff needs to be fixed in order for PlayStation to be the preferred platform for TellTale’s games.

  • I’m with you, FearMonkey, on missing the old series. I could use a lot more Sam & Max.
I want a comedic series again, the likes of Sam & Max or Monkey Island.

  • Really looking forward to this. Loved their version of TWD. Also loved BL1 and BL2.

What with the new Borderlands game on the horizon, Borderlands 2 Vita and now this……..Very excited for the release and would also like to know what platforms this is being released for.. PS3 obviously, but Vita/PS4 ?

  • most of the comments I am reading that say this will be great seem to be coming from non gamers that reckon BL2 was too hard, well if that was the case go buy this as it will be your level Telltale make boring tedious games that are easy to complete and offer no challenge whatsoever unless pressing the correct buttons in order as prompted on the screen you will be railroaded through your journey with very little control over your character and charged for each episode which I totally disagree with, to me Telltale jumps on the back of tv series and games with large fanbases and puts out vile games with additional episodes you have to buy in order to comlete, anyone who played TWD or TWAU and enjoyed them you are not gamers and are prob quite happy that there is something out there that you can get a platinum trophy for, and believe me if you can’t get the platinum for a Telltale game turn round you are not facing the screen LMAO

  • I am definitely going to go for the season pass on this one, and it’s awesome that the first episode will be out this summer. I just hope it’s on PS4, and not just on the last-gen.

  • @jackports

There are games played for a challenge, and games played for story. Someone enjoying Telltale games style of game doesn’t make them “not a gamer”. Just because you seem like you can’t go 2 minutes without shooting things, doesn’t mean there isn’t an audience out there that wants to experience the lore of the universe. Not every game needs to be running around shooting things, and not every game has to present a stiff challenge.

  • any idea if this going be a ps3 or ps4 title?

  • Point and click Games are about as boring as it gets :(

  • The story in BL/BL2 was good, but it could have been polished much more and been at the level of Bioshock 1 or Infinite. Their DLC efforts in BL2 were weak at best. They write enough to move the gameplay along and that’s about it. Telltale stories are much more about the experience than guns and loot, as BTTF was fantastic. So I am looking forward to seeing what they can do with the world, because it is completely open and ripe for plenty of stories with or without guns.

  • Here comes my opinion and I do not want to be spammed with stuff back on me, okey?

  • If it going to be Walking Dead-ish, this will suck hard. I wish they never did take this quest anyways, just because they had games to do and the way they make talking and story going is not the way I wanted to happen to Borderlands at all. It works good for Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us, but thouse games is diffrent. I hope it not too much like that or else it will be way to boring and changed everything borderlands used to be and I hoped it to be.

  • Telltale needs to stop this.

They already have issues bringing episodes of their games out on time… now they take on ANOTHER project? What?

The absolutely ridiculous wait time before Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us episodes needs to end, but sadly with them taking on two more series (Borderlands and GameOf Throwns), this seems to not be going to happen. Its pretty retarded we wait 3 months for a 2 hour episode to release. jeeze.

I guess I’ll think twice than to buy the episodes when they release. Next season of TWD I’m just going to wait until the entire season is released, buy the season pass and play then. These release times are the most retarded thing I have ever seen.

  • Is this coming to Vita? That’s the only way I’d want to play it.

  • I am very excited for this telltale games are fun period I look forward to playing this. But one thing I know this will also come to PS4 and if so I hope this is cross-buy because if not then I’ll wait for the PS4 version or maybe the PS Vita version.

  • 22, Borderlands 2 was definitely not hard, especially if you actually did the side-quests.

28, I don’t think you’ve ever played a Telltale game. Regardless, you probably shouldn’t be wasting your time posting comments on this article if you despise Telltale that much.

35, don’t worry, Borderlands isn’t changing. This is a side-project, created by a completely different developer. You can skip this game completely and wait for the Pre-Sequel or the eventual release of Borderlands 3, if you want.

  • I think its really great that gearbox and telltale have came together like this, and if they are considering a long-term relationship, it would be awesome to see other telltale games on the PSN store like A Wolf Among us. If this comment is seen by a telltale/PSN staff member i would highly appreciate it if you and your fellow staff members would take it into consideration.

  • A Summer Release Sounds Nice but will it Really Happen? Given Telltale’s Track Record?
