Drakengard 3: Making Music with NIER Composer Keiichi Okabe

It feels like only yesterday that we announced Drakengard 3 on PS3, but in just two more weeks the game will be in your hands. We’re rolling out some of the best content yet in preparation for the launch, starting with this interview with the incredibly talented sound director of the game, Keiichi Okabe.

Drakengard 3: Making Music with NIER Composer Keiichi Okabe

If you’re familiar with the NIER soundtrack, widely acclaimed as one of the best game soundtracks ever created, you already know his work. Okabe’s interview is insightful and candid, as he discusses his musical group’s unique approach to creating music, and even how the Drakengard 3 soundtrack will come across to fans of NIER’s haunting compositions. But I won’t go into too much detail, because you should watch for yourself!

Coinciding with this music-based interview, we’ve also updated the game’s official website, www.drakengardgame.com, which now features cuts of almost every track on the Drakengard 3 soundtrack, which is also available to purchase from the Square Enix Online Store. It makes great background music while you check out the other sections we’ve updated.

For those curious about how the game will play, you can check out our newly available Gameplay section, and we’ve also added Novella chapters for the game’s four Disciples: Cent, Octa, Decadus, and Dito. There’s some good reading in there.

Drakengard 3 is now available to pre-order from Amazon and other participating retailers, and don’t forget that you get three costume variations if you pre-order. But you only have two more weeks!

  • The NIER soundtrack is amazing. I have it on my regular playlist, and just listened to some of it a few minutes ago. It’s really great music. I love it so much.

I do too! I just listened to it on my way to work :) The soundtrack for Drakengard 3 is just as amazing. The website now has samples of the music – its absolutely beautiful!

  • The music is one of the main reasons I can’t wait for this game. The soundtrack to Nier is still one of my all time favorites and I hope this is just as good

  • I am so completely excited for this game. I enjoyed the drakengard games and completely loved nier and its amazing sound track. it replaced persona 3 and 4’s soundtracks as my favorite video game sound tracks. I’m not reading any of the novella other than zero’s until i got my collecters edition with the novella. I really hope the story of this game is just as good or even better than niers. Nier’s really made you think and feel a bunch of different ways, and in thee second playthrough it made you feel bad for killing the shades which was great. Does drakengard 3 have multiple endings too and if so how many?

Personally I have absolutely been enthralled with the story line. The novella just takes it to the next level and it was a must to get localized for NA to get the true Drakengard 3 experience. As far as the ending…sorry you are just going to have to play and find out! :P

  • I really hope for Dual-Audio Option! Please.

JP VO will become available as a DLC. Free for people that pre-ordered it during Phase 1 Pre-Orders and only $4.99 at the day of launch!

  • 2 weeks left. It’s been a while since the time of petition.

  • @Sakura Minamida I checked the website and the music section still says coming soon, and the gameplay section isnt up yet either

  • Sadly, as I pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition and didn’t feel like being r@ped on shipping fees from Digital River, it’ll be somewhere around 3+ weeks before the game is in my hands. Really looking forward to finally getting a new Drakengard game. Hopefully the turn-around time for the fourth game won’t be as long.

I bought the NieR soundtrack at my local Kinokuniya. Really expensive, but totally worth it. The music was simply amazing. And from what I’ve heard of this soundtrack, it’s quality is right up there as well.

  • Will there be a PSN pre-order version of the game?

  • @Sakura Minamida ok, is it possible to change the color of like the slash effects in game? I mean the pink is cool and all it just seems a bit over used.

  • Hi sakura i’m looking forward to playing this. Could you put Neir up on the PlayStation Store later as a digital title or in PlayStation Now so i could play it. Maybe release the other game that never came here to NA digitally ty.

  • Been listening to the Drakengard 3 Soundtrack along with Nier. Kind of wish this could be used in a Final Fantasy, its just so good.

  • I love posts like this. I’m really excited for Drakengard and as always, my wonderful Collector’s Edition from SE.

To enhance the community of the PS Blog, I would love to see more behind-the-scenes posts about the music, voice actors, game creators, artists and even the programmers who write the code for battle mechanics and other game features.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I love reading about the development and creation of game. Games as art… or art as games?

I am glad to hear :) I love the behind the scene stuff too as I grew up with these games. I pinch myself everyday that I get to work with all the people I grew up admiring. They are incredible people and we want to share more about them to our NA fans!

  • Nier is one of my all time favorite sountracks, alongside Ocarina of Time, MGR:Revengence, Final Fantasy’s 4,6,X/X-2, and 12, Majora’s Mask, Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil (shame on you if youve never played Psychonauts and BG&E) and Rayman Legends

  • Wasn’t paying much attention to this game till now, but i learned its an rpg. I’m wondering if the psn digital version will be discounted compared to retail? $50 is still high for a digital version of the game.

Is there some way you could work with Sony to at least give us a day one ps plus discount on it?

  • Music in a game is the key component for a immersive unforgettable everlasting experience in a game. I will checkout the soundtrack.

  • Mega excited to get my first wave CE. Thanks for posting this on the PSBlog. It’s great to see the things that surround a game and not just the game itself. Keiichi Okabe has been one of my favorite video game music composers since I first played NieR.

  • 2 weeks?…didn’t know it was this close to launch…I liked that song of the announcement trailer, watched countless times just to hear that song….so at 1:00 is that CGI?…damn it looks too good for a CGI…btw english voices sounds terrible.

PS:I have seen a gameplay of this game that is funny as hell….haha with her waking up and going outside…then her dragon is doing some silly stuff in the water…man that was funny…I’m laughing right now just by remembering that.lol.

Oh man, I’m so excited for this game to release. A few more weeks to go and the collector’s edition will be in the palm of my hands. I’m a huge JRPG fan and NieR was definitely a fantastic game that blew my mind. The game made me feel in ways I didn’t think a game could. KEEP THOSE JRPGs coming and all my monies will be yours!!!!

  • icecoldgangstaa

Also, Keiichi Okabe makes some fantastic soundtracks! Definitely looking forward to the game’s BGM. :)
