Hands-on the new with PS Vita

PS Vita’s new design has tons of tweaks and adjustments, aside from the obvious thinner design and weight reduction. The Start, Select, Power, and PS buttons have been raised slightly, making them easier to press. The grips on the back of the system have grown a bit, resulting in a more comfortable experience… and less accidental taps on the rear touch pad. The edges of the system are more rounded, which just feels better. The display is now LCD based, but I didn’t notice a dramatic difference in picture quality.

– Justin Massongill, PlayStation.Blog

The new model is approximately 20 percent slimmer and approximately 15 percent lighter than the original and features 1GB of internal memory, extended battery life, a new high-definition liquid crystal display (LCD) and rounded edges that make PS Vita even more comfortable to hold. PS Vita is the ultimate companion for any gamer with more than 1,000 games available (including classic games from PS one and PSP) and “Remote Play” with PlayStation 4, which allows most PS4 games to be streamed to the PS Vita system over a local Wi-Fi network. Pairing your PS Vita with your PS4 to use Remote Play is even simpler with last week’s system updates. The content library for PS Vita will become even richer when PlayStation Now support launches on the system later this year.

In addition to Borderlands 2, God of War and God of War II are available today for PS Vita as part of God of War Collection. And that’s not all for this month — Soul Sacrifice Delta launches on May 13 and Sly Cooper Collection launches on May 27.

Slimmer, Lighter PS Vita

May is a big month for PS Vita, right? Well it doesn’t end there, with Helldivers launching this summer and Minecraft, Metrico, Tales of Hearts R, Freedom Wars, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number all expected to release in 2014.

Check out the sidebar of this post for the PlayStation.Blog team’s hands-on impressions of the new slimmer, lighter PS Vita and let us know what games you can’t wait to play on the new model in the comments!

  • 64 GB memory card or riot :)

  • Even though it is my birthday I’m picking one up for my brother. Gotta spread the Vita love.

  • Crash and Spyro or riot :)

  • Pretty awesome. Might be a great option to replace my broken Vita down the line here.

  • Phantasy Online 2 and a Monster Hunter 4 port … or riot.

    -LET’S KEEP THIS GOING!!-

  • I really really really like that lime-white model, already own the previous model.

  • “Well it doesn’t end there, with Helldivers launching this summer and Minecraft, Metrico, Tales of Hearts R, Freedom Wars, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number all expected to release in 2014.”

How sad of a lineup is that? Only two exclusives (since we all know Metrico will pull an OlliOlli) and neither of them are made in North America.

  • Region locking removed…or riot.

  • AKA_Neku for god’s sake I’m sick of RPG games on vita please stop we need more and western titles and other genres

    Still looking for:

    Resident Evil
    GTA
    Splinter Cell

    On Vita.

  • Whew, so glad I got the last(better)model before this Slim came out.

  • I have a question. Should we(psvita owners) get excited about E3?

  • Will we be getting the other colors anytime soon?

  • @Trendy_Kid Vita isn’t region-locked. It never was. Sony’s had region-free game playback since the PSP.

  • earth_inheritor

I kinda with 3 on this.

Why has it never been addressed Sony bloggy peoples???.
Every single week i see someone different ask for Spyro or Crash, and ever week its ignored. It may be a never gonna happen scenario maybe due to content rights etc.

Everyone wants it, i have ALL the Crash and Spyro games purchased for my Vita and cant play them either downloaded or as a data transfer.

Can we please just get closure? Just a yes, or no never gonna happen and tell us why it wont.

Theres are perfect games for Vita, classic games, very easy to pickup and play a level or 2 and they were vital to the PS1 Success.

At this point even a “it cant and never will happen” is better than someone..every damn week asking for it.

  • Affordable Memory Card prices… or riot.

  • Gonna save up for this over the summer. I had the original Vita, but it tragically drowned at Latin Camp. Excited to finally be able to play all those PS+ games I’ve been receiving!

  • Get rid of propietary memory cards, just…do it

  • Is there a SKU w/o Borderlands 2, lower price or alternate bundle, 1 year of Playstation Plus for example ?

  • You know Sony could have saved money and just reduced the prices on the 64gb and everyone would by more of both.

  • I picked mine up today, and I’m watching this Borderlands 2 download with crazy anticipation. Can’t wait for Now to be on the Vita. My life will be complete.

  • I got the lime/white slim when they launched in Japan, and I love it! If you a thinking of getting a vita the slim is the way to go! I use it for remote play alot, and the new design is much nicer to hold than the old one. There are also a few little tweaks they added that make it nice, plus the on board memory is a great feature.

  • I don’t like these and will buy older models until they are gone.

I will give up the Vita.
A game that will be discounted heavily eventually, over a nicer screen. No thanks.

  • If I can’t find an OLED PSVITA for retail price than LCD it is.

  • So sad about the screen downgrade but yay for the improved buttons and smaller rear touchpad! I would buy instantly if they brought the black/pink to America.

  • I can’t believe I have to wait a week for Borderlands 2…

  • That’s a nice price point, so hopefully more people will finally see what we loyal Vita owners have been raving about. With more users, hopefully we’ll get some decent bigger games. I seriously do love the indies and even the ports of older games. I honestly do, so please keep publishing them. But…

We were also promised console-quality games for Vita. Killzone and Uncharted have been the only decent “console-quality” games (in my opinion) so far. Uncharted wasn’t even that good. We need a few good AAA games that are actually developed by the proper studios, and not farmed out to smaller devs who can’t quite capture what makes a series work on consoles.

    • Thanks for your support. As for the big games:

The economics simply don’t work with the traditional process. We have to do something different to get AAA games on Vita. We accomplished it to a certain degree by making PS4 games work on Vita via remote play. PS Now will be another way, streaming PS3 games on Vita. I can’t wait until PS Now is out on Vita – I hope you’ll try out the experience and let me know what you think.

  • Free bag of Cheese Doodles or riot!

  • So when will the west be getting the ps vita tv? I really want to remote play my playstation 4 in my bed room. Any word on the vita tv you care to share?

  • @remanutd5 @11 -> Well, Borderlands 2 Vita was announced almost a year ago and we will finally getting it too close of the E3 of this year. I wasn’t expecting i had to wait that long. I will be optimist about Vita in the E3, though. If we cannot be optimists, who will be?

  • I wish they had a no game option for $170

  • no OLED screen, NO games!! NO THANK YOU!!

  • @ italodancemp3

    Okay…

Well, besides my PSO2 and MH4 request for the Vita…

I’d like another Syphon Filter, a Half Life 2 port, another Split Second, and more second screen support!! … or riot – of course.

  • Sword Art Online:Hollow Fragment localization or riot…..OH WAIT

  • So how do I use the cross save or does that need to be patched in on the PS3 version?

  • OLED for life!

  • Colors would be nice. Are they coming to the states?

  • I want a vita I really do. It’ just that 200 plus tax is still an expensive investment that for some reason I can’t commit to. Mad games for PS4 that I can stream to vita check. A bunch of games from plus that I have been stacking up for Vita check. I like Sony products check. 200 dollars for some reason not checked… lol maybe some day!

  • xFuzylilManPeach

@1, a 64 gig memory card is available for the Vita. I believe they are only sold in Japan but you can get one off Amazon for about $110. It is fully compatible with the North American PS Vita.

Id highly suggested anyone to get one if space is an issue, it was a great investment.

  • Sony should bring exclusive Motostorm, Ratchet and Clank, God of War and Syphon Filter games to the vita and port Fat Princess and Warhawk.

  • Sony… why don’t you ask Square Enix to port those Final Fantasy for smartphones to the Vita?

  • Full List of PSOne and PSP Games playable on Vita or RIOT!

  • LuiSpartanMIMIMI

I’m tired of seen just indie on the Vita side. That’s it. Vita is just a controller to PS4 and an indie portable.

Where the heck are the AAA games?

I remember back in 2012 where in a interview, Sony said they did not want the Vita to just have ports of other console games. So far what we have here? Sly Collection(PS3-2010), God of War Collection(PS3-2009), Jak & Daxter Collection(PS3-2012), Ratchet & Clank Collection(Rumor, but almost certain-PS3-2013).

What true AAA Vita games we got last year? Just Tearaway and Killzone Mercenary.

Sony, It’s clear you cannot handle two consoles. I think you should step back from portable market and have all your resources on PS4.

    Vita is DEAD.

  • How much is importation Fees on 64GB in canada. I don’t wanna pay like $120 for the card then have to pay like $30 in importation fees.
Also I was lucky enough to get All 3 Crash’s, CTR and Spyro on my NA PS Vita. Can someone confirm if I can transfer those games to a computer and put on another memory card without it showing up as incompatible?

  • @42, I love the Vita, does it need AAA games? Yes. But it ain’t goina happen if no ones goina buy the system. I buy quite alot of games for the Vita and don’t regret it. Alot of great games if you’re not just about following the games hype train lol. PS Vita has some of my all time favs :). Don’t suggest they stop, just cause you don’t enjoy it. Vita has one of the most dedicated userbase in gaming apparently so it’s not doing as bad as you’d think

    • I really appreciate the support of all of the Vita owners out there! We’ll keep on trucking with more Vita games!

  • @42 (LuiSpartanMIMIMI)

Nice “cut and paste” job, dude. Same comment everytime you post.

Please post the link to the 2012 interview you are recalling so that we can all take a look at when a Sony representative said the things you are alleging.

I’m really looking forward to the Vita game announcements that Sony has planned for E3 in just over a month!

  • Sony, where are the AAA games for Vita? I have nothing against the indies but i don’t bought my Vita and a 32GB memory card just to play indies. I’m still waiting Vita’s Greatness.

We love our Vitas, do not disappoint us.

  • Yeah, 64gb card was definitely my best gaming decision last year. I’ve got 12 Vita, 18 PsOne, and 16 PSP games now and still have 19 GBs left!! well worth the $110 and actually really easy to get

  • Sorry ….I couldn’t wait …I imported a Blue/White slim and I enjoy every minute playing it :)

  • Please Sony, just release an affordable 64GB Memory Card in the states. The reason I don’t BUY more Vita games is because I do not have room for them, and I already own two memory cards. I can’t even play cartridge based Little Big Planet 2 because the update file has gotten so huge, and you can’t play online without the update file. Proprietary memory cards are fine if they are affordable and sufficiently large, and yours are neither. Until I can get a good memory card at a good price, my Vita is just an expensive controller for my PS4 :(

  • @ gerneric123 I understand that the Vita isn’t region locked, our PSN accounts are, which is even worse due to the fact that the Vita can only house one PSN account per memory card.
