Last week we announced the release date for PS4’s first socially connected racing game – DRIVECLUB.
The response we’ve seen to the trailer is seriously overwhelming, and it’s time for some more news.
Welcome to the first of three DRIVECLUB updates this week. DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition has been a hot topic since its announce, so today’s video (the first of three) should answer most of your questions about the actual content included in this edition compared to the Blu-ray version.
One of the recurring questions we keep seeing is about the scale of the PlayStation Plus Edition. The simple answer is that with an active PlayStation Plus subscription, you can download DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition, which comes with one location (India), 11 tracks, 10 cars and access to all game modes.
But why did we choose to offer this particular selection of the game to PlayStation Plus subscribers for free?
DRIVECLUB is inherently next gen. It’s about accessibility for all and building a community of gamers who love online play. DRIVECLUB PlayStation Plus Edition is designed to be a quick and easy way for gamers all over the world to join the DRIVECLUB community. You can take part in all the game modes, set, send and compete in challenges, and race online against others in the DRIVECLUB community.
We think you’ll have a lot of fun playing DRIVECLUB once it launches on October 7th, digitally via the PlayStation store and on Blu-ray at your local retailer. If you’re an active PlayStation Plus subscriber and have been playing the PlayStation Plus Edition, but decide you want the full DRIVECLUB experience, you can purchase a one-time upgrade for $49.99. Great News! Not only can people play it for free, you can essentially purchase the game for $49.99 rather than $59.99 as long as you are a plus member! Good Deal!
The upgrade is seriously, truly, one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. Like, are you serious? You save TEN DOLLARS off the regular price, AND you can only play that version WHILE you’re a PS+ member.
How on earth do you even justify that?
what is free? the game or the the tracks,cars moves etc, available day 1? and will it support gt5 driving wheel?

Will the online be inter-connected with both the PS Plus edition and the retail version, or is that feature unique to each player base?
$50 for the upgrade and it expires if your PS+ subscription lapses? PS+ has never done that before, it’s always been you get to keep anything you pay for. Is this going to be a regular thing from now on?
Why is the upgraded PS+ version only available while you retain your PS+ subscription? All other discounted software remains available after you lose your subscription. It’s just the free stuff that should only be available while you have your subscription.
How about a trailer with American cars ?
You’ll need to clarify the PS+ cost and sub requirement.
Spending $50 on the game and requiring a persistent subscription afterwards flies in the face of every other PS+ title discount offered.
I’m hoping this is just misworded or a mistake.
So basically it’s a glorified demo. And a $50 upgrade only if you remain a PS+ member. A $30 upgrade I could maybe understand. But That’s almost full retail price that you lose if you quit PS+.
By far my most anticipated PS4 game this year! Cannot wait!

I have no plans of letting my PS+ sub run dry, and I appreciate the ability to save $10 upgrading digitally, but is there, in fact, a reason the two are linked together? Other purchases made with a Plus discount are playable if ones subscription lapses, how is this different?

Please tell me that this is just worded poorly. Am I to understand that you can only play the $50 upgrade as long as you have PS+? If so, that’s downright terrible and should be in size 40 bold and underlined print on the very first line when viewing this upgrade option on the PS Store as to not mislead anyone.
If I pay for the upgrade, that should be viewed as a PS+ discount and not be tied to PS+ in any way other than to play online.
That being said, I’m still willing to check out the PS+ Edition when it releases. Looks like a fun game and the PS4 could use a good racing game.

Not really happy about that upgrade option. Seems kinda cheap to me. My subscription dropped once while unemployed and ibwas able to keep what I bought. If this is how its going to be from now on with digital games I buy then im sticking with hard copy. Shady, VERY shady.
Wow this is rather disappointing but expected. The upgrade shouldn’t be anywhere near $50, and the free content offering should be more than one fifth of tracks and cars. This will have to be a truly awesome game for me to want to buy it. I’ll enjoy the free version but it seems very content incomplete now as compared to the full version. If this is what we can expect from big name PS+ titles just stick with the indie’s as they have been great.
For the people thinking the $50 upgrade is misworded, it’s not. It even says it in the video. It makes it sound like it’s an in-game purchase rather than a store purchase.
So not only did you guys repeatedly mislead (and arguably straight up lie) about the content of the PS+ Edition of Drive Club, but you’re charging $50 for the upgrade when the full game (which doesn’t expire with your PS+ subscription and retains a little of its resale value) will invariably hit the same or lower price within two weeks of release. And it’s going to be nearly a year late.
This is pretty rotten, Sony.
$50 for the whole upgrade? What a ridiculous price. Might as well pay an extra $10 and get the whole game on disk.
Sorry, I just have to echo the questions of a few other people on here…
After paying $50 to upgrade to the full version, why would access expire if your PS+ subscription lapses? The current model for PS+ purchases is that as long as you spend money on a piece of content, that content is still fully accessible if your subscription expires.

If Im not mistaken it means that you are required to keep PS+ active in order to play what you paid for ($50)…
@ the PS+ sub situation: This is most likely because either the game has become online-only, or a lot of the content won’t be accessible offline. And since you need a PS+ sub to play online, you will need one to access all, or a majority, of the content. And either way, if you buy this game, wouldn’t you be wanting to play it online, which you need PS+ to do anyway? Why would you let your sub lapse while actively playing this game?
This is kind of… not good at all. This doesn’t really sound at all like what was initially being promised, and this whole $50 “upgrade” sounds like a workaround to get people to get DLC for the Plus version that makes it the full game tied to PS+ instead of having people just getting the full game.

This has to be misworded. They can’t make you pay $50 and then when your PS+ sub runs out the game you paid for ceases to work. I guess the workaround here is to get the Blu-Ray.
Perhaps they’re treating the upgrade as DLC? If we buy DLC for a game we got on IGC, we lose access to upon sub expiration, as the base game is no longer valid. Not a very nice approach though, considering the price.

after reading @29’s posting I have to agree with him. I will play the plus version and if I want more I will buy the disc. That way when I am done I will make money off of it by selling used. If it was a more reasonable $25-$30 (like a week one ps plus discount) I would do this upgrade.

As a big fan of the Motorstorm games I was looking forward ang going t purchase the full game to support you, but now I have a reason to don’t play and don’t purchase the upgrade of the PS+ version! Hell, now I’m even thinking to don’t buy the retail game!

Anyway, Ill give the Plus version a try and then Ill decide for this one or Project CARS.
Sony is treating the upgrade like DLC. In other words, I have the free version of Bioshock Infinite through my Plus membership. If I buy the season pass, I’ll only be able to access that content as long as my Plus membership is current, which gives me access to the Bioshock Infinite core game. I’m not saying it’s right in the case of DriveClub. If you pay $50 for 80% of a AAA full retail title, you should have access to it as long as you have a working PS4, Plus membership or no.
I’m adding my voice on to how stupid this is. 1/5 of the game is a lot less than they made it sound originally, and the fact purchasing the full game as a PS+ member means you can be revoked access to your purchase is the worst stipulation ever added to PS+. That’s some shady business practices right there. This has not been a good week for PS4 owners.
Jumping on the bandwagon here. The upgrade system isn’t good. We’re only saving $10; give us the full version with no strings attached.

The one-time upgrade to full version for $50 isn’t exactly a one-time upgrade if it’s locked behind PS Plus. That’s worse than putting multiplayer behind a paywall. Just to keep playing it people will have to pay $50 every year. That logic makes no sense.
I will be getting Plus during the summer but I’ll be getting the physical version of this game.

This has to be a joke, right? Last year this was promised as almost the entire content and a small upgrade fee. Now it’s a demo and 50 buck upgrade fee and tied to ps+? You lost a customer and this has really soured me on all the positive momentum Sony had going for it last year. Please rectify this and live up to your promises.
I think you guys are asking too much for the upgrade. Project CARS is coming out a month later with Morpheus support. I know someone will say they are “fundamentally different” but comon. They are both car driving games with online multiplayer and great graphics. It’s like saying Coke is fundamentally different from a Pepsi.
At this price I won’t be buying the upgrade.

this is really lame, ok you get a PS+ limited version to play free ok, but upgrade cost $50, but you cant play it if you are not PS+ member? so where is my $50? you should let me access to that since i BOUGHT IT. Now i would like to know from where is this coming, PS+ should continue giving FULL games, not extended demos, if so what’s the point of PS+? Since you are probably going forward with this plan i will tell you what i will plan to do, i will play the PS+ edition and buy the FULL version at retail when it it at $20 or less, or get it really cheap on one of these PSN sales.
