A Closer Look at Grim Fandango’s Surprise Revival

Hi, we’re 2 Player Productions, the documentary team that brought you Penny Arcade: The Series, Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, and the Kickstarter-funded Double Fine Adventure! Two years ago, we teamed up with Double Fine Productions to prove that “Adventure Games are not dead!” Well, they’re dead now, but in the way you’ve always wanted them to be! Tim Schafer’s beloved LucasArts classic Grim Fandango is back, and we’ve put together this short retrospective documentary to get you primed for its upcoming release.

Grim Fandango

Over the fifteen years since its debut, adventure game enthusiasts have longed for the opportunity to revisit Schafer’s neo-noir take on Mexican folklore, but unless you still had the original (now out-of-print) discs, there was no official, LucasArts-sanctioned way to play it.

Grim Fandango

When Disney and LucasArts began licensing their properties to other developers last year, Double Fine reached out to arrange a deal that would allow them to resurrect Manny Calavera, travel agent to the recently deceased, and all the other skeletal inhabitants of The Land of the Dead. With the assistance of a passionate team of believers at Sony, that day has finally come. New audiences and dedicated fans alike will now have the opportunity to play the original classic, remastered for modern platforms.

Grim Fandango

After digging through VHS tape archives, piles of concept art, and talking with original team members like Schafer (lead designer), Peter McConnell (composer), and Peter Chan (artist), we set about answering the important questions like: What inspired this crazy universe? Were tank controls actually genius? And did Tim only own that one red shirt in the 90s? For all this and more, check out the clip and get hyped for the chance to relive one of gaming’s most critically-acclaimed dark comedies from the golden age of point and click.

  • Is it true the ps4 is not powerful enough to run audio cds, mp3s, 3d blurays, dlna, and bluetooth remotes? Or is it, as some suggest, an active decision to ignore these features in lieu of Sony’s paid services?

  • This was the only announcement last night that actually got me excited.

  • It’s completely true. The PS4 isn’t powerful to play audio CDs.

  • I’ve been waiting 19 years for a Full Throttle sequel. EA couldn’t make it happen. That this can happen for Grim Fandango gives me hope that it CAN happen. It can be done! PLEASE Sony, help Tim re-make Full Throttle! I’ll pay, I’ll pre-order.. Whatever you want..

  • I never got to play this, though I used to love Lucas games like Sam and Max. Looking forward to trying this out and seeing why this game was good enough to inspire a burlesque show at PAX East : )

  • @2 Really? Uncharted 4, GTA 5, The Last Of Us, LBP 3, Didn’t excite you smh

  • Run you pigeons! It’s Robert Frost!

  • i remember Full Throttle 2 they had 3d character models but got cancelled.. sad :/ i still like Full Throttle :D

  • @1
Power has nothing to do with not working with any of what you said… Bluray 3d was probably not implemented because people *****ed and moaned about 3D when they did have it.. They said MP3’s and DLNA is coming in a later update and i have no idea why cd’s don’t work (my guess is either too lazy to actually implement it into the firmware or just wanted to get other things before hand) and i didnt even know bluetooth remotes didnt even work :0

  • This was the highlight of the show for me as well. Other news got me excited (like PROJECT BEAST) but this was the one I had the biggest reaction to. I can’t wait. Gonna buy the heck out of this. ^_^

  • Been waiting for a re-release of Grim Fandango, finally I’ll get to play it and on my console of choice. Tim give us Brutal Legend 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I had to pause and walk away after this. I’m so excited. This is my favorite game of all time. I can play it blindfolded. I have my original discs but they’re very scratched. I hope so hard this is getting a physical release. And a collectors edition. One of those stupidly expensive $180 collectors editions. And I’ll buy two.

  • This was literally the best news to come out of this E3. I love Uncharted, Zelda, Last of Us, but this is something that I have been wanting for SO long, and never believe would actually happen. Congratulations to all those involved. I truly hope this sells very well, and that this motivates you to do the same for Full Throttle. That game, with an HD makeover would be PHENOMENAL.

  • I’ve never played this, but it’s very cool that it is coming again. I will definitely be buying and playing this when it comes. :)

  • @9
It is my understanding that the hardware assembly for CD’s is not in the PS4 and that is why CD’s cannot be played back. I know sony did some work in the past to reduce this down on PS2 so DVD and CD used a single laser and lense, so I’m not sure why that support didn’t carry over into the current drive.

    @2 & 9
This is also the most inappropriate time to bring up this topic. This is a post on revitalizing a classic game and a moment of celebration. It also underscores the need for backward compatibility in our devices.

  • Very exciting! Still have my discs, great game.

  • My reaction was BRUTAL. I started to scream YEAAAAAAAAH, GRIM F·$/% DANGOOOOOO!!!
Jajajaja, thanks for the amazing moments so far guys. Really.

    A proud Sony user.

  • Wow congratulations everyone at double fine. I am so excited for this. I’m 30 and remember this when it came out. I was never able to find a copy of it then. :( but I’ve watched thousands of game play videos and play numerous point and clicks from the past. I loved full throttle. Hoping we could get a day of the tentacle release as well. Thanks and will buy day 1

  • i’m really excited for the hd remake of grim fandango.
looking forward to this, lbp3, destiny, and a bunch of indie titles

  • Very excited to replay this. It truly was game of the year material. I just hope that the old school tank controls are gone and that there is a proper platinum trophy in it.

  • Very excited to play this! I have heard so much but never got to experience it.

  • I played the game on pc and now i’m excited to replay it on ps4. hope it will released soon.

  • I almost never comment on here but I had to for Grim Fandango. A million times YES! Just take my money! I still own an original PC copy but would but it again for PS4 in a heartbeat. One of my favorite games ever.

  • best reveal, period. also, great little video here!

I hope it includes the ability to switch to the original audio like the Monkey Island Special Editions.

would be fantastic to play these in stereoscopic 3D on PS4. will it use the DS4’s speaker and/or touchpad?

too bad it won’t make it to PS3. I know a bunch of people who introduced their kids to Monkey Island on PS3.

hopefully Sony can get the partially completed Day of the Tentacle Special Edition out of Disney as well ;)

  • Unless this is a physical release, I’m not interested.

    No disc, no sale.

  • Grim Fandango had a fantastic universe with great artwork and superb soundtrack. As a piece of gaming art, I loved it. As an adventure game, however, it was very poor with crappy controls and some truly mediocre puzzles. Tim knows it.

As a fan of Grim (the world, not the game), I’m curious to see how Double Fine is going to revisit this franchise. Will it be a useless HD version, or a complete remake? I certainly hope for the latter.

  • By FAR the biggest & coolest announcement of E3!! I’m super excited about being able to play this amazing classic again in a really wellmade HD remake by Schafer himself!

  • I hope they have the balls to change the graphics radically. Just keeping the original soundtracks and voice-overs should be enough to create an iconic element.

  • A different ending would also be coool!
