This Week in PlayStation: The E3 ’14 Recap

Justin Massongill's Avatar + Posted by Justin Massongill on Jun 14, 2014 // SCEA Social Media Specialist

And E3 2014 comes to a close. It’s hard to pick specific highlights after the massive amount of news that came out of this year’s show, but I was blown away by the atmosphere of Bloodborne, the mystery of Uncharted 4, the grandeur of No Man’s Sky, the intensity of Driveclub, the gruesomeness of Mortal Kombat X, the momentum of N++, the Batman-ness of Batman: Arkham Knight… I could go on.

Bloodborne on PS4

In case you didn’t catch our live coverage during the show, we’ve got interviews with dozens of devs, straight from the main stage at the PlayStation booth. We had a star-studded lineup of hosts this year, including the illustrious Anthony Carboni, the lovely Meredith Molinari, the beloved Ryan Clements, PlayStation Social kingpin Sid Shuman, and myself (still wondering why they let me wander onto the stage when we’ve got all that other immense talent available). We put months of work into making this all happen, and we hope you enjoy it!

PlayStation E3 Interviews: Day 3

Did you get into the Destiny alpha? I’ve already dropped somewhere around a dozen hours into it… and the game isn’t even in beta yet! This is shaping up to be one of my personal GOTY contenders — can’t wait to see the final product later this year.

What are you playing?

  • I’m playing: Destiny First Look Alpha, FF14, Spelunky
  • I’m watching: Segments and trailers I missed on the PS YouTube channel
  • I’m listening to: RX Bandits (new album next month!)

really excited that theres alot of really awesome games coming out for vita/ Broforce, titan souls, grim fandango, galax-z, guns up, and miami hotline 2. i love how inventful and original indie games are these days. but ofcourse im just as excited, if not more, about the new games for PS4. uncharted and bloodborne is really all i needed to hear about this year to be satisfied.

@3 there was a lot of vita games announced for vita. not AAA games but honestly you should ask the devs and publishers why they arent making games anymore for the console. or why publishers like Bethesda have no interest in making vita games, and never will make a vita game. im sure you already know the answer. its not really sony’s fault that the only companies that see the console as being profitable is indie devs. the vita did not sell as well as it should of. and indie games are awesome. sony cantt make activision, ea, or ohter companies use their resources for a console. there are more ps4 owners already than vita owners. most people, unlike you or me, can justify buying a vita since they have smartphones. we know sony has atleast 2 of their studios working on vita title, that may be as good as its gonna get unless the vita starts selling more.

sony is trying to make vita successful. they even released new models that are cheaper and the PSTV to try to help overall vita sales. if the vita gets a bigger install base, than companies will be more willing to develop games for it. until then expect more indies, which is a good thing none the less, and expect more ports or hd remakes. it makes no sense to spend so much money on a console that will not sell or make profits. as a vita owner i hope this changes but most people dont need a handheld console. sony is smart so they are focusing on whats successful, which they should and their newest console the ps4. its successful and less than a year old. the ps vita is like over 2 years old now and even at launch had big AAA titles and even really successful ones like Assasins Creed and COD and it still did not help the vita to become the success it should of been.

10 dollars is expensive??? i feel bad for you.. i like how your brain failed to use logic…. you threaten sony with this, “We don’t need to inform you,you will see a shock by your Vita fans soon.” oh wow, the whole less than a million of us are gonna shock sony. if you really did have a brain you should realize that sony should be focus on their new and successful console, since all the devolpers abandoned the unsuccessful vita. you want AAA games, well too bad. and by the way you wont have broforce or titan falls on a mobile phone dumbass and its that actual logic that is the vita is not successful

most people think ” why do i need a handheld console when i already have a pretty damn good one already with my smartphone.” handheld consoles are not gonna last much longer. i want it to be successful, but its not gonna be at this rate. and you can threaten all you want, but realize there are more ps4 owners than ps vita owners. its pretty simply math, so tyr to use that brain you thank\ed god to have.

It’s so funny to see first the name of PS Vita TV turned to PS TV and second there’s even not announced any new and exclusive AAA game for it.
Yes even one!!!!!

Let me repeat it again louder ONE!!!!!

Good work Sony just keep releasing hardwares and leave the games, yeah that was another smart move.

1. Nothing really surprising or special about E3.
2. If you will not make PS4 backwards compatible with past digital titles then give us credit for them on PS Now.
3. Add MP3 playability.
4. Stop ignoring the Vita. FF tyoe zero should have been made for it. It’s a PSP HD remake. No reason it should not have.
5. Give us better info on recent news about releases. ( Nothing was even said by you about Mnecraft going CrossBuy).

Keep the sales coming, and the improvement on PS Plus.

Love Nintendo games myself.
But most don’t want to buy another handeld console to play them.
It’s no wonder the Vita would have so few sales.
Current owners don’t really have to do anything, but keep complaining about it.

It’s the lack of people buying them. Which is apparent.
With so much focus on Indie titles, It is no wonder.

I was actually really disappointed with your show, Sony. Microsoft had more interesting exclusives and focused on game, while Nintendo blew everything out of the water.

Only The Order and Uncharted looked interesting not much else looked exciting other than 3rd parties. Also, you guys continue to ignore Vita which is not promising. I bought the console for fantastic, unique experiences on the go. Not expensive Indies, remote play, and PS Now. Being portable means there is not constant internet

This is sad i love my vita but still no gta? An reading comments on here an 1 person mentions smart phones, really people rather play on a phone than a vita? I like very few cell phone games an i wish they were on vita because a phone is a worst thing imo to turn into a gaming device, all sony needs to do is make cheap memory cards an allow the 3g to be with all companys an not just stupid AT&T

NEWS FLASH: PS VITA ACTUALLY HAD GAMES ANNOUNCED DURING E3.

Don’t believe me? Check out Vita Sizzle at official PlayStation Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daz6WLWaQc4

XSEED is bringing Senran Kagura series on Vita – not only 1, but 2 games! They also announced AKIBA’S TRIP: Undead & Undressed for both PS3 and Vita – plus Brandish: The Dark Revenant for PSP. That’s 4 games alone from XSEED. Our friends from NIS America announced Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited for Vita, including all dlc from PS3 game and brand new content – and let’s not forget about awaited Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, sequel to well-received PS Vita exclusive! And other good news for fans of Japanese games – Tales of Hearts R arrives to west! And what about Freedom Wars – huge exclusive title for Vita from Sony itself? Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd was there too! If Japanese games are not your thing, how about some Minecraft on Vita? There was A LOT of Vita games present, these are just to name a few!

Are those not enough? Well guess what – Shahid Kamal’s Team Alone Has More Than 70 PS Vita Games In Development! Vita is the best portable console out there – not just an extension of PS4. Come and join us!

I personally don't.

I like cheap indie games that have better graphics than older generation 8bit.
I like that more thought has been involved for gameplay.
I like what they have done for us on Plus for CrossBuy titles.
I love PSP games.
I love being mostly portable, even though memory cards are ridiculously priced even though I have upgraded to 64gb.

The Vita is the only thing that has hepled me remain Sony.

Its that they give it so little support.

Hey guys, gotta say that the E3 experience they had early this week was awesome.
Seriously, there was this huge line of us all sorta looking disappointed that there was gonna be no extra seats.
Not even ten minutes to go before the show and they just pull out this HUGE stack of extra vouchers/lanyards.
Believe me when I say everyone was surprised. Most of the show was spectacular(even if it went a little late).

Only real burn for this was that the codes that we got it had a very short time span for redeeming.
Went to go check it out not even a day after the event and the site said that the deadline had expired.
I was quite sure that they said in the post show(11:20ish over here) that the codes would be redeemable for a longer period.
Can you guys pass it on that this put a little bit of a dampener on an otherwise excellent experience?

#28 PS Nation Podcast Team did a wonderful job, indeed.
Their latest podcast covers some of the games that are coming to the VITA, and really, I do not think for a second that Vita is dying.

Maybe the complainers here are nagging for a blockbuster Western RPG games like Fallout, but honestly, that’s not really viable.

I’d rather see Vita-exclusive spinoffs of big names, something like FF7 : Crisis Core on PSP.

inFAMOUS would be awesome, or GTA spinoff to attract the Western audience.

Honestly, those of you saying “Vita is deadm wah wah wah~” should just play CODs on your darn home consoles.

This week has been a very disappointing week for me as nothing significant has been announced for the Vita. Tetris and some Indies. Don’t get me wrong, I like Indies but they should complement AAA games. Not a fan of JRPGs (which there are quite a few on the horizon), which leaves me only with Indies. I was hoping for Infamous for Vita, another Uncharted, maybe GTA, NBA, WWE etc. And we got nothing announced. I am not sure if we will see a AAA game on Vita in the future. At this point, I would be happy to see anything like more HD Collections (Ico/shadow of collossus), Vita versions of AAA PS3 games, Pac Man CE, maybe San Andreas HD with trophies. Come on Sony, I am a huge fan. I have owned a PS1, PSP, PS2, PS3, and soon a PS4. Please don’t abandon the Vita. I love my Vita, but do have a sour taste after a disappointing E3.

So, Vita…. should I have to say anything about this…
I bought Vita and despite all my friends SAID BAAAADD things about it, I kept saying Sony loved it, giving COD, Asscreed, Killzone and so on..

not in 2014
I appreciate Shahid Kamal and team who able to get many Japanese Vita games, but SCEA doesn’t seem to care about it, as we see not even LBP 3 is made for Vita, and no… no game for west that should become the holiday game this year…

Nintendo prepared Super Smash Bro. and Pokemon Alpha/Omega… and Vita got none in that caliber.
Nintendo even gave Mario Maker, Bayonetta 2, and others for the non-existent Wii U as their pledge not to abandon it.

I know PS4 is great, I love it every second playing it and this holiday PS4 will be huge…

But Vita… where is the ‘life’ that comes from the name itself…
