War Thunder on PS4: PS Plus Starter Pack Coming July 1st

War Thunder PS Plus Starter

Beginning July 1st, all PlayStation Plus members will get a free plane in War Thunder on PS4: the P-36A Curtis Hawk of 2nd Lieutenant Philip Rasmussen, who earned a Silver Star while defending Pearl Harbor. Here’s a little history behind it.

Philip Rasmussen awoke to the shouts and explosions of the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7th 1941. It was 8:00 AM when twenty-five Aichi D3A1 “Val” dive-bombers dived onto their targets at Wheeler field on the island of Oahu, their 250 kilogram bombs striking the maintenance hangars and P-40 and P36 fighters parked closely together on the flight line and strafing the barracks and tents, causing many casualties before leaving the battered airfield.

Сlad only in his purple silk pajamas, Rasmussen raced across the open ground to rescue what aircraft remained. He was joined by 1st Lieutenant Lewis Sanders with 2nd Lieutenants John Thacker and Gordon Sterling.

The four P-36A Curtiss Hawks took flight and soon saw eleven Japanese planes attacking the Bellows Air Fields. The group attacked, using the speed and surprise of the attack to their advantage. Rasmussen, however, soon found his guns firing away out of control. But a Val dive-bomber passed directly in front of the gun’s line of fire and was stitched with rounds across its fuselage and heaved over, diving into the sea.

Rasmussen then attempted to line up his next target, but the runaway guns played havoc and he was unable to confirm any hits. Without warning Rasmussen’s canopy exploded, Japanese 7.7mm and 20mm rounds struck the P-36’s fuselage and canopy, rounds tore into the tail of the aircraft, shattering the rudder, the tail wheel, and the control cables and hydraulic lines in the tail of the aircraft. Rasmussen was saved when the radio behind his seat absorbed two 20mm cannon rounds and numerous machine gun rounds.

There were now two Zero fighters on his tail firing hundreds of rounds into his beleaguered aircraft and the third one going for head on, but in the end, Rasmussen found shelter in a bank of clouds before turning towards Wheeler Field. Still wearing his purple pajamas, Rasmussen jumped down from his aircraft to survey the damage. It was extensive — well over 500 hits on the aircraft.

Rasmussen would go on to fly P47s over the Pacific earning Oak leaf clusters to his Silver Star. He would continue to fly with Sanders and shoot down two more enemy aircraft, serving with the Air Force until retiring in 1965 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Sadly, Philip M, Rasmussen passed away on April 30th, 2005. He now lies at Arlington National Cemetery.

  • It was great meeting the team at E3, many of our community members are enjoying the heck out of this game right now!

  • Awesome news, thank you guys am really enjoying the game

  • The game looks like it will be a lot of fun. I downloaded and installed the game and the update but when it came to check my internet connection it said I wasn’t logged onto the internet. I checked my setting and did a speedtest and it passed. So perhaps its just temporary and will work later. Anyway, Good luck to the devs as well as to fans of the game.

  • This is a great game! I’m looking forward to logging lot’s of hours of flight time. Hard to believe it is free to play.

  • Kool but we need in the Tanks, The starter tank is a pea shooter that cannot kill crap

  • A true hero and a wonderful and inspiring story.
War Thunder’s authenticity makes it a truly amazing game.

  • Well this will be cool to get this when this comes out I have to get back into playing war thunder at some point.

  • I’ve been loving this game, enough to make some purchases already. Are you giving us only a plane or does this “Starter Pack” include any Golden Eagles or Silver Lions?

  • @tusunami, get some new material at some point.

  • Great read!

I downloaded the game recently but have yet to play it. I will jump on this soon.

  • Still waiting for when I can use my PC account in PS4 War Thunder.

  • PC users have a huge advantage in arcade battles unless you use a mouse and keyboard with ps4. it’s sad too. game isn’t too bad but unfair advantages = no supporting the game for me.

let us choose to play with only ps4 users and only ps4 users using the controller the game was better before the servers came together anyway, it’s a cool option, and realistic and simulator battles (though boring) are still fair because they force PC users to not use mouse auto aim. but atm arcade battles are just broken since pc users have easy mode aiming.

  • MOE-GUNZ-JACKSON

I just wish the PS4 menu UI was more console friendly. It’s so frustrating operating like it is a PC. War Thunder is one of my favorite games on the PS4. I play it every day.

    @12

I seem to not be affected by the advantage. The trick is when turning you can use the touchpad to swing the camera to make is turn a bit faster. I have no issues in this game except the unfriendly UI for PS4.

Glad we’re getting a free plane! Can’t wait.

  • Cool! I get a plane I’ve already unlocked, unless it’s gonna be considered a premium plane

  • Funny they don’t mention the other aircraft crewed by 2LTs Thaker and Sterling getting shot down over the water and the radio operator dragging the pilot back to shore.
