Powers: Dramatic Series Hits PSN This December
Powers

As PlayStation fans, you’ve probably heard a few whispers about “Powers” — the original live-action series set to premiere exclusively on PSN in the United States this December. Today, the “Powers” team announced some exciting news as we prepare to begin shooting.

We have our first director! David Slade has signed on to direct the first two episodes of “Powers.” David has most recently directed episodes of NBC’s “Hannibal” and AMC’s “Breaking Bad,” plus films like 30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and Hard Candy.

But if you haven’t read the graphic novels, fear not. In a nutshell, “Powers” is an edgy dramatic series that follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities, referred to as Powers. Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, “Powers” asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals? Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the brave people in charge of protecting humans like us and keeping the peace with these over-paid, commercialized, god-like men and women who glide through the sky imposing their power over the mortals who both worship and fear them.

The first two episodes are written by executive producer Charlie Huston, adapted from the best-selling graphic novel series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. “Powers” is produced by Jinxworld and Circle of Confusion in association with Sony Pictures Television. Brian Michael Bendis, Charlie Huston, Remi Aubuchon, Michael Avon Oeming, Michael Dinner, and David Engel serve as executive producers.

As announced at E3, every PSN user in the United States will receive the first episode of “Powers” for free, and, continuing SCEA’s efforts to bring more value to the PlayStation Plus subscription service, PS Plus members will be able to view the entire “Powers” series for free.

We’re making incredible progress on “Powers” and look forward to sharing more soon. Stay tuned for more news in the weeks and months to come.

  • Any news on Canadian availability?

  • I really hope this series can live up to the excellent material it is adapted from.

  • No offence but wasn’t Playstation “All about the games”? And “The best place to play”? Can we not go into the competition territory with “media”. Thanks
    – A Playstation Gamer

  • Too much time during E3, doesn’t make me any less excited for it.

@3: They already did with PS3. So… late to the complaint party. And even if we just talk about PS4, they already said they’d do this a long time ago. So… Again, you’re late.

  • @3

The “core gamer” makes up a small fraction of the audience for these systems. The average person wants their console to do more than just play games. Powers “needed” to be at E3, or at least something like it. Sony needs to prove to the non-gamers that they care about more than just “us”

  • @3 To be fair. Sony was in the movie/tv game before the video game game. :) The have many video and music properties, so this really isn’t something new…

  • Please Sony never put anything like this on stage at your E3 Press Conference again. This part of the Conference was too long and too boring and took all the wind out of it. Brought back memories of the Wonderbook stage demo.

  • I’d just like to point out that you have stated in this article, that PS+ users get the entire “series”. That implies not just the first season, but all future seasons as well. If this is intentional, so be it. Consider me very happy. But don’t be making these claims then going back on them later.

Also, THANK YOU for FINALLY saying what format this show would be in. From the announcement at E3, including the concept art, I couldn’t figure out if this was supposed to be animated or live-action. I’m actually a bit disappointed that it’s live-action, but I’ll take what I can get. As long as the effort is put into it, I guess it could still be good.

Looking forward to checking this out in December.

  • Hey Mike,

Is there any way to pitch scripts for shows that would be a great fit for PSN’s original content?

  • this is the thing that made me scroll facebook out of boredom for like 15 minutes during E3 right?

  • Wohoo Powers!!!! Will this be available in Canada?

  • Will this be watchable on the Vita?

  • on PSN for PS3 PS4 and PSV ? I don’t get it. (@_@) Or through Video Unlimited ?

  • Make sure their is a way to stream this on PlayStation TV. Sony picked a bad bundle with that product, should have came with a DS4 and a couple of months of PS+. Then you guys could really push this show on this new generation of viewers.

  • LMAO, Canada goina get the shaft like usual?

  • This is going to be so awesome. Powers is a great series, Bendis is one of the best writers in modern comics.

I’m going to be super sad if Canada doesn’t get the free Plus deal, but you know what? Give me a complete season blu-ray release and I’ll pay for it. Don’t even care, Powers is awesome.

  • Nobody cares. We want games

  • @All who only care about games on PS4

I really hate how some of you are so obsessed with gaming that you’re not willing to accept any annoucement of media-related features for your console. Frankly, I think stuffing an entire E3 conference full of “GAMES GAMES GAMES” really doesn’t make for a good conference, especially when there are other features/products you have to consider. Like the PS Vita. Or the system update that adds multimedia functionality (and CMA support) to the PS4.

It’s like most of you aren’t giving these things a chance (and this extends to the indie games as well).

  • This will be worth looking into to and since I am a PS Plus member i’m looking forward to this!!!!!!!!!!

  • To the people saying no one cares about this:

You have become some of THE most entitled whiners I’ve ever seen. Sony DOES care about gamers but they are a MULTIMEDIA company. If you’re not familiar with that word look it up in the dictionary.

If you’re not interested that’s fine. But don’t come on here saying that no one’s interested when you don’t speak for everyone.

As for me, Powers looks really interesting, I may have to give it a look.

  • Subsided_Assasin

SO is this going to be available in Canada as well??? I realize Sony often likes to shaft Canada with price increases, etc. so i’m going to assume the answer is no

  • I can’ trait it I love gaming but I also love TV and movies and of course all things superheroes. So I think this should be great, but I do have one question fir you. Which is: Is Powers going to be a Live-Action series or an animated series? I am hoping for a live action series myself but am sure either one will be great. Can’t wait to hear and see more.

  • Not really interested in this. Though, it does look pretty neat.

  • It’s neat that this is happening, but it’s gotten a bad reputation from being the middle part of the E3 conference that bored lots of people. It’s going to take some work to prove that Sony was right to devote that much stage time to it.

  • You really should have gone into more detail about this project at the E3 press conference. I think I speak for the entire Playstation Nation when I say that we definitely could have watched storyboard art and listened to your plans for this show for the entire presser.

    Just teasing. Mite b cool!

  • I’d rather not have part of the $50 I spend on Plus every year going towards non-gaming features.

  • Oh Powers, the thing that stole Vita’s deserved time on the conference…wow Sony you’re going all out with this hu?…practically screaming “we did betrayed the Vita”……..so…..what’s next?…..

I think it should be a post about TV’s getting PSNow 1st than Vita?

Anyway I ain’t got nothing against Powers….it looks cool.Just pointing out the dirty actions of Sony and their greed.

  • Can we get PlayStation Bluray Remote support so we can browse this selection on something other than a power hungery Dual Shock 4 controller.

  • This sounds great and all, I mean look at all those name-drops, but…

Why do they just now have a director, and only for two episodes?
Why haven’t they started shooting yet?

Seems like all this promotion really has the cart before the horse…

  • Great, now I can catch up on Heroes!

  • Now since they are supposedly multimedia, and since they were doing before games, maybe someone can talk them into more than just one download.

Stopped buying them once they changed it……….Again.

  • And before anyone tells me that you can, you may want to check out current policies.

  • oh LOOK! powers! the topic that single handled killed Sonys E3!!!

  • Despite the complainers, this was a nice surprise at E3. Personally I’m looking forward to it. Can you please clarify what you meant by PS Plus users get the whole series? Just checking if you meant the first season or the whole series if it goes into multiple seasons

  • Great comic. Hopefully the tv show does it justice.

  • I have been on this blog site long enough to know that if my original question regarding Canada was not answered then it’s obvious that we will not get it here. Too bad. Would’ve been nice to get a clear answer.

  • PSTV!!!

  • drpepperdude100

I’m actually really looking forward to this. I don’t know why there is so much hate for what possibly might be a great tv show.

  • I am surprised how much I am looking forward to this…

  • are there any GLBT primary or secondary characters? really curious how this unique avenue for content will differentiate itself.

  • Rather than showing us some TV Show series.
Why don’t you show us what kind of new service will be available from Sony?
Will you guys be doing some kind of Netflix like service.
Video streaming services are high in demand. Sony has enough content to make it’s own online channel kinda like Hulu.
Content doesn’t have to stop at just Sony’s offerings, it can include Warner Bros and other TV show producers.
In Canada, the telecom business is a mess, however if you are a streaming service, you’re looking at a potential gold mine.
As cable/fiber companies ask too much for too little content on TV and people are switching away from them.
    I’m just saying…
