Destiny: PS4 Beta Hands-on

Today, PS4 and PS3 owners will get a chance to experience Bungie‘s galaxy-spanning epic Destiny for the first time. Assuming the role of a newly revived Human, Awoken, or Exo, players will explore the ruins of a Russian Cosmodrome and battle hordes of formidable Fallen and feral Hive, all while earning new skills and collecting increasingly effective weapons and armor.

Destiny on PS4 and PS3

I had an early opportunity to play the Beta, and I’ve collected my initial notes below. While this post is by no means comprehensive, I hope it’ll help get you up to speed before you hop in yourself. And if you’re in the Beta, please share your tips, observations, and feedback in the comments below.

If you played or read about Destiny’s Alpha last month, you might be wondering what’s changed for the Beta. The answer: plenty! Perhaps most notably, the Beta fills in many narrative gaps with pre-rendered and in-engine cinematics, fleshing out more of the backstory and making this feel much more like a world I want to explore. These scenes are fully voice-acted; your character even chimes in with his or her own voice from time to time! Your Ghost companion’s dialogue has been refined as well, and generally fits better into the overall story, complete with computerized filters and other cool audio effects that lend a bit more personality and color.

A few more enhancements I noticed in the Beta:

  • Music is more prevalent during the Beta’s more intense action sequences.
  • Screen-filling visual effects that punctuate important in-game events look to have been punched up, like a display-wide violet tinge and screen-shake when a massive ship drops a platoon of enemies onto the field.
  • Certain areas are now dubbed “Darkness Zones.” Respawning is disabled in these sections, meaning you and your Fireteam need to stay on point to make it through.
  • On the main overworld map, the Tower displays small, green icons to indicate when rewards or messages are waiting for you there.
  • The character customization system can still yield some pretty awesome looking Guardians.

For those with a more competitive nature, the Crucible — Destiny’s PvP multiplayer mode — awaits. This pits players against one another in glorious combat, and keeps things extra-interesting by tossing vehicles into the mix on larger maps (such as the moon-based level I played here). Players can commandeer large, armed conveyances or deploy their handy Sparrow whenever needed — or they can stick to an on-foot approach to ensure an instant offensive is always an option. The mode I played saw my team capturing and holding three control points, while taking special care to eliminate those who would take over our post.

These are but a few observations I made in my short time with the Beta ahead of its official launch today. Once you’re in, let’s compare notes in the comments! Destiny launches on PS4 and PS3 on September 9th this year, but you can play the Beta starting today by pre-ordering the game, either at retail or on PlayStation Store. See you in the Tower.

  • I bet there are people at sony saying “wow, we probably should have expected this”. Then the guy next to him says “nah man we are good its SONY come on”. Then he says “oh ya”. Then laughs while playing in a pile of money.

  • I’d like to say I didn’t see this coming.

  • “remember, you are now charging us to play online….. no excuses.”

    This.

I honestly try not to moan, but I actually have some free time for a change, and I wanted to download some Sleeping Dogs DLC and enjoy it this afternoon. But I can’t because of some game beta I don’t even care about. I can’t even watch Netflix because of this crap. WHY DO WE NEED TO BE SIGNED INTO PSN TO WATCH NETFLIX?

  • Dear PlayStation…

    WHERE ARE MY FRIEND CODES!

I ordered this d*** game from your PSN Store and for some reason, you think I do not deserve any key to give to my friends? Way to make me never buy anything from that store ever again…

  • Greatness awaits…. only on XBOX :D

  • “Greatness Awaits”

    Well we’re still waiting

  • @144 The Sony store is having issues as well.

  • damn it!!! PSN down… because of the “Destiny’s childs” hahahaha!!!

  • Just got it got to PSN> games> demos and download it there

  • I’m finally able to download… took me more than one hour hitting the store again and again…
SONY… let me tell you this one more time…

    GET YOUR WORK DONE PROPERLY!

  • @154

This has sealed the deal I’m not going digital this generation. I don’t have time for these screw ups an dlack of explanations or even a response of some kind

Just think we’ve been complaining for almost 2 hours now and not one reply to any comment in this blog post

  • SONY if you care about us respond to this message

  • I got it starting now

  • can’t start the beta :DDD Sony sucks!!!!

  • **** unable to connect to psn

  • Finally downloading THANK YOU JESUS

  • These messages are doing nothing. If you want to have an affect on the situation call Sony.

  • Eureka. Finally got it downloading. Why does it only say 179 mb. I thought this was a 15 gig download.

  • i still cant even redeem the code…

  • @hostile426 Don’t think you have made it yet :DDD

  • I did see this coming lol

  • still cant connect

  • TimeSkipLuffyUS Damn it you are right.

  • WHAT THE HELL PLAYSTATION!!!

  • once its done go to the main menu and the notifications tab and under downloads click the destiny beta to open it

  • Still no word from a single representative…pathetic. This is how you treat your customers, especially after forcing them to pay for your internet service? Where does this money go? CLearly not into the infrastructure which has been fundamentally broken since PSN first began.

  • To those people that say Sony isn’t stating what is wrong.

Have you checked the Knowledge database online, it is posted there:

    “PlayStation®Network] Updated 07/17/2014

The PlayStation Network is currently: Intermittently available.

The PlayStation Network is currently experiencing high volume and users may experience issues when connecting to the service. We will update you with any changes that may occur in regards to this issue. Thank you for your patience.

If you would like to receive a notice when PSN is fully restored, be sure to follow the official PlayStation Twitter account and our support Twitter account, @AskPlayStation.”

  • psn still down 3:00 thanks

  • I would rather Sony fix the problem than have to report on each individual Blog to people about the problem.

  • Looks great. Shame the store won’t let me download it. Maintenance huh? Great timing.

  • @147 – that’s a good way to just redeem the code, but when you go to your Media section, it craps out because the PSN is down.

  • Here’s a link that will take a while to post..

It’s where the Online Knowledge database is:

    https://support.us.playstation.com/app/home

  • This is a regular occurence with sony. Its obvious what the problem is. There is too much traffic to download a 14gb game. The stress is just too much for sony to handle. They always choke for the big game.No pun intended. Its like they forgot about the money that is supposed to go to the servers. As usual Sony’s social media accounts are quiet as a sleeping baby.
As said before during psn being down they suck at letting people know whats up.

I got into ps store and heres what happened

I go to redeem codes and try my first then my second and it finally works.
but there is a screen to download the game guess what happens (error has occurred) (this service is currently under maintenance)

SONY IS TOO GREEDY! They want you to pay 90 bucks for souped up version of destiny so you could have downloaded the beta days ago. They want to be the only retailer to get your money so they made it so that everyone pays for digital to get to play game before hand via PRE LOAD! Probably won’t play until tomorrow. Sony is the most awful company at customer service. SONY needs to apologize but if history says anything about the company’s character they will not until it actually get ridiculous.

  • Its going to be exactly the same on all systems. Its just to big of a demand everybody i know is taking this down. Its crazy. No matter waht at least were getting it first.

  • should of finished the download 2 hrs ago >.>

  • This is destiny! Greatness awaits….

only on XBOX One and Wii U

  • I pre-ordered the game on PS Store yesterday and it the game downloaded automatically. When I tried opening the game, it gave me an error = CE-34632-8 and it still won’t work.

  • ahhhh…. I give up… I gonna give my X1 a chance to do it better than Sony. One customer lost.

  • From LinK_BxB

For those of you who actually were abble to download the beta file that is about 170Mb and the update of about 30Mb and have installed them, select the destiny beta app press Options / info and you can see that (at least in my case) it is still downloading.. maybe it only works when the 15GB are finished downloading.

  • “only on XBOX One and Wii U”

What’s a WII U? Is that some failed game system from Sega or something? What’s an “Xbox One”, another failed system that needs to “fire sale” all it’s unsold games?

  • @GGCAN

yeah they posted it on the place most people will not see it. The fact that they have not spoken with media nor posted it on their own social media accounts nor posting on here tells me that they are trying to hide. That update was a formality – they still clearly don’t want to address it to the masses. Nice try defending them, though.

  • come on Sony!!!!

  • Would be great if PSN wasn’t down for maintenance!

  • So. Entered my 1st Beta Code. Got to the screen to Confirm/ Continue. Clicked it. Got error code. Re entry of said Beta Code results in Error. Beta does not show on my Cart or my Downloads.

Entered 2nd Beta Code. Got to the screen to Confirm/ Continue. Clicked it. Got error code. Re entry of said Beta Code results in Error. Beta does not show on my Cart or my Downloads.

I have one more Beta Code to go. The 1st two being used and getting an obvious error code for a Beta Code already been used. I guess I will wait until the dust settles.

But, what did you expect? I had the PS4 day 1 and there were problems due to users overwhelming the servers. How can’t you anticipate that there is going to be overload? It’s like you’re the US govt. and you launched 2 wars but are suddenly surprised that the veterans of those two wars need services at the veterans hospitals!

I thought you were smarter than my government at least.

  • Has anyone actually got to play it yet?

  • You sons of mothers! You’ve ruined everything! How dare you fail us in this, our hour of need?! Devious devils deny us? Dastards, I decry! Desperation drives denizens delirious. Domain down?! Deprived of Destiny, I despise you dudes!

Nah, for real, take your time, get shiz under control, and I’ll try again a little later

  • I’m in. Now just have to wait for download/install.

For those who bought retail for PS4:

    1. Get your 3 codes from Bungie.net
    2. Redeem one of the codes in the PS Store
    3. If Download fails initially, you can go back to PS Store > Games > Demos and retry.
    4. You should get a confirmation that Destiny Beta was added to your Library.

Keep trying over and over if you get the ‘maintenance’ error. It’s just the servers getting hammered.

  • Wow so many complainers in one thread. Calm down wait it out and then try mines working fine. Of course I know what patience is.

  • @191 + sukTHEfac

Hate to disagree with you, but they do state it’s on Twitter as well.

I’ve seen many PSN users replying there (Twitter), as well as on Facebook where it’s also posted as well as the Sony Knowledge center.
It’s not too difficult to check if you’re that upset, instead of hating on this Blog.

Not sure how much people want them to publish, but as I mentioned above, I’d rather they work on fixing the issue, than posting what is wrong.

Can’t believe all the people stating maintenance when Sony’s message clearly implies it’s due to the number of users logging on.

Many companies experience these problems on Betas or when a huge amount of users login at the same time.

I’ve worked in IT for several years and know that you can’t fix problems and try to keep people calm at the same time.
