PS Plus: Preview August’s Free Game Lineup

This month our PlayStation Plus members will receive two games free the day they release on PlayStation StoreRoad Not Taken on PS4 and Metrico on PS Vita. In addition to these titles, members will receive other popular games like Fez on PS4, Crysis 3 and Proteus on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita.

PS4 owners can enjoy two puzzle games with very different mechanics. First up, there’s Road Not Taken, where you’ll aim to strategically maneuver through a forest as efficiently as possible with only a limited amount of stamina, all while saving lost children. Then you can don a fancy hat in Fez, as you jump around pixelated 2D levels housed in a 3D world. Shift your view of the landscape with the hit of a button and journey to find the pieces of a Hexahedron.

On PlayStation 3, Crysis 3 offers the sandbox first-person shooter world that made the franchise famous and there’s a new toy to play with – the Predator Bow. If you enjoy multiplayer, there’s a new mode here called Hunter where two players are pitted against a team of CELL agents with the goal of slowly turning all of them into fellow Hunters. Then, there’s the soothing experience of Proteus, where you’ll explore procedurally generated islands with a dynamic soundtrack.

Finally, PlayStation Vita owners will get their hands on the highly-anticipated puzzle-platformer Metrico and critically-acclaimed action RPG Dragon’s Crown. Traverse a world filled with infographics in Metrico, but don’t be fooled by the clean presentation – proceeding through these charts isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Invite up to three friends to join you in the dungeons of Dragon’s Crown, and thanks to Cross-Play you can even go adventuring with your buddies who have PS3s.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • So are we actually going to get Dragon’s Crown on PS3 too, or is it just listed because it’s available on that platform? That’s the only one I’m interested in this month (that I don’t own), but I don’t own a Vita. Though it never worked that way in the past, here’s hoping.

  • Great line-up. Screw anyone who thumbs their nose at this, there are some good and interesting games here. Vita absolutely wins this month, thanks to all the cross-buy. I was *this* close to buying Dragon’s Crown last week, changed to Rogue Legacy at the last moment so I’m delighted.

Oh and people, please give Proteus a chance. It’s balls trippy, and while it is literally a walking simulator it’s strange and compelling and just a lovely chill experience to play when you are sick of Shootmans 27. Looking forward to trying out Fez finally too, another game I intended to buy at some point.

Good games Sony folls, please don’t listen to all the entitled little snots who whine about the selection. PS+ has been the single greatest deal in my many years of gaming, and I’ve been playing since the VIC-20. It’s horrible to see how such a genuinely great service has turned people into screaming petulant children because they have their minds closed to trying games outside their comfort zone.

  • What an amazing month for PS PLUS, keep doing it

  • everything is good except the indie games every single month

  • So the problem with Fez’s formatting has been fixed, but Dragon’s Crown is still listed as both PS3 and Vita.

Think that means we’re getting both? I think that means we’re getting both.

That is a very good PS Plus lineup right there

  • No, we’re not getting Dragon’s Crown for PS3. It’s only listed like it is because PS3 players can play with Vita players and vice-versa.

  • Nice month for Vita!

But I thought Road Not Taken was coming to Vita too???

  • So excited to play Road Not Taken. I love the art and the gameplay looks interesting. Thanks PS+ for another fantastic month of free games!

  • So I see the Vita version of Road Not Taken is delayed until “the Fall”…will we receive that for “free” when it’s released or is it not “cross-buy”?

  • I just bought a Ps4 and I am only using Ps Plus games so far, there are descent games, but, overall they are all arcade games, I cant even fell the ps4 level yet, I’m sad because I prefer to use my Ps3 than my ps4… I know they wont reply to my coment, and I understand that you cant give big blockbusters just yet, bat please, when? When Will I have descent games for my ps4 on ps plus?
because, so far my Ps4 is a piece of garbage compared to my Ps3

  • Super great line-up. Especially with those cross-buy titles (FEZ/Proteus).

  • Indies…

Where is LBP or another good game for Vita?

  • Overpriced Indie games for free. Could have given the unpopular Knack for free, even the lackluster Metal Gear Solid, or Thief. I rather get those then Indie games

  • Hurray more indie crap……. Atleast we get Crysis 3.

  • fez and proteus are cross buy, fez is also cross save. not sure if we will be getting dragon’s crown for both systems

  • Road Not Taken – Seems interesting, probably won’t play it.
Fez – One of the best games ever made, already bought it.
    Crysis 3 – Don’t care
Proteus – Looks cool, been wanting to try it out for awhile.
Metrico – Looks cool, 2D platformers are awesome
Dragon’s Crown – Great game, sold my Vita copy since I figured it would be available on PS+ eventually.

  • Amazing month. Can’t wait to play Fez and Road not Taken on my PS4. Thanks you!

  • Really like the lineup this month. Good variety of games. Been looking forward to Road Not Taken after reading the various PS Blog posts, Fez has always looked interesting, Proteus I had some interest in and I have never tried any of the Crysis games. Only thing I already have is Dragon’s Crown and that is a great game for anyone that didn’t pick it up earlier.

  • Awesome line-up! Can’t wait to play Dragon’s Crown. Great job PlayStation.

  • The PS3 games are junk but over all a great month for me.

Road not Taken:I was planning to buy this at some point so I’m Super happy to get it for free and on day 1.This alone makes it it a good month to me.

FEZ: I own it on steam but I haven’t played it yet so I’d rather play the PSN version for the trophies.

Cysis 3:I don’t care much for Shooters.

Proteus:Complete Crap. I own it on Steam. It’s worthless. It my be a “unique experience” but there is nothing interesting about the experience it gives, nothing interesting to see.Even the music which it’s often praised for is junk.It doesn’t sound good or even interesting.I have literally been more entertained by pressing random keys on a piano.

Metrico: Looks interesting but also kind of boring,Perfect game to try out through PS+.

Dragons Crown: Oh sweet merciful Shuhei ! I have been in waiting for this to come to Plus. I knew it would come someday so I put off buying it.Through all those sales and now at least my patience is rewarded.Delayed gratification at it’s finest.

This is a pretty average month. Nothing really stands out as being that great. Also, I’m getting pretty tired of the wrong info in these posts. I understand that you guys are human and everyone makes mistakes, but it happens all the time. It would be helpful if you guys do some serious proofreading before posting. Make sure it’s clear what we are getting.

  • wow, nice….just saved me about 40 bucks….:).
    still waiting for PSP games!…

  • Best month ever. THANKS!

  • Just once, can I pretty please have a AAA title for the PS4? Indie games are great, but a little variety would be appreciated.

  • Getting pretty tired of indie games.

  • Another crappy PS vita + ps4 month. Would say PS3 too but Crysis is there. Nice one, sony

  • C’mon, Sony! We used to have 2 to 3 AAA PS3 games available every month, now we have only 2 games available and 1 is a indie ****. Subscribe plus starts to not worth it. Even the sales and discounts lately isn’t that good.

  • Guys, stop dreaming with AAA PS4 games on plus for now. I believe it’s not going to happen till next year.

  • I had to slap myself in the face just to make sure I was awake! Amazing lineup this month!!!

  • YAY both versions of Dragon’s Crown…love you guys and PS Plus!! woo-hoo

  • See now, this is where I get angry. I have seen IGN, Gamespot and even Sony executives ask, ‘why don’t people like indie games? Why don’t they sell as well as the AAA titles?’
Well as much as I appreciate PS+ I hate seeing games I have bought become free. e.g. Fez and Stryder and countless others on PS3. This creates a marketplace that punishes loyal customers for making purchases early.
Then consider that I also own an Xbox One. Guacamelee, Strike Suit Zero and Crimson Dragon are free.
So basically what Sony and Microsoft has done is create a situation where buying indie titles just isn’t in the consumers best interest.
Time to look at the business model again.

  • Inde game for ps4?? Wtf???? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • First of all, to commenters railing against indie games, please refer to IGN’s Colin Moriarty’s editorial about this subject that he posted last night…

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/29/why-do-so-many-people-hate-indie-games

Can anyone who commented negatively about indie games in this thread please respond to the points made in this editorial? They reflect my feelings completely.

BTW, I love the games in this update. Especially getting Dragon’s Crown for both Vita and PS3…fantastic deal!

  • Oh damn!, :D great month!, thanks a lot!

  • @Nicklebag Have you read these comments? People hate indies even when they are free. People don’t understand the value that these games provide. They are brainwashed into thinking that only games that have huge budgets are “real games”. Most of these people who hate indies would rather play Terminator : Salvation than a game like Transistor and that makes me sad. People need to change their outlook on games or they are going to be very sad in the direction video games are going in.

  • So many whiners, I can’t take it. Please please please, just STFU!
This is a really great month of games, lots of diversity.
Some people will never be pleased until Sony is giving away all their AAA games on every platform. Get real. Pull your heads out of your behinds. Show some respect. Or GTFO. Your choice.

  • Ugh, more games I’ve already bought in some random PSN sale a couple of months ago are now free… The annoying trend continues… I really need to learn to not buy anything that isn’t AAA because inevitably it’ll end up on Plus for free.

  • OMG. Road Not Taken and Dragon’s Crown. Normally I’m one of the members that’s always grateful with PS+ offerings but this month I’m EXTREMELY grateful!

I’m very, VERY happy with this lineup. :)

  • A copy of Dragons crown for both vita and ps3 sounds good to me

  • This is like Christmas. THANK YOU PS PLUS TEAM!!!

  • Thundercleese_83

4 games for the Vita! Of the 3 systems I have never expected that the Vita would become my no1 gaming machine.

  • Awesome. We are getting both versions of Dragon’s Crown. This is one of the best months just for that.

  • Getting mad about *other people* receiving a game for “free” that you paid for some time ago and already enjoyed…okay.

Meanwhile, let’s all take a look at the official replies: For those saying we won’t get Dragon’s Crown for PS3, it seems that we will be getting both versions. My only point being that I’m glad someone official stepped in to clarify the issue. Here’s hoping that happens more often going forward. *raises glass*

Decent lineup for me. Apparently 4 of these games will work on my system (PS3-only guy). Already have Proteus. I paid for it, but…*drumroll*…I’m not aggravated that it’s joining the IGC. It’s a weird game. Kinda pointless, actually. I didn’t love it, but I did love the idea of it: roaming around without any particular goal in mind. The world needs more games like this.

Don’t have any of the others, so yay! Fez is one of the few unplayed demos still installed on my system, so off I go.

  • Crysis 3, Fez, Protheus (never heard of it but givin it a try) and Dragon’s Crown in one month for a happy PS3 owner like me?! Hell yeah!!! Thank you PS+!

  • Thanks for the awesome update, PS Plus team. Love the 4 Vita titles this month. Cross-Buy titles are really appreciated by those of us with a PS3 and Vita – thanks again!

  • This is my favorite month of the Instant Game Collection for a long time. I still look forward to a larger game on PS4 sometime, but Road Not Taken and Fez are two great examples of why I like PS+. They are games I am interested in, but that I wasn’t going to pay $12 for.

And I am super stoked for Dragon’s Crown, which would make this month’s offerings totally worth it on its own.

Between the PS Play preorder discounts, buying Marvel Lego Superheroes and the August IGC, I am getting I am getting $80 worth of value in these couple of weeks, easily. And that is just one month.

Now, if Sony would just give us the option of subscribing to EA Access…let us decide the value of a service, not you.

  • Incredible month! Thanks guys!

And will Road not Taken be available for the Vita? Will it be cross buy?

  • I’d rather have a great indie like Fez than a bad “AAA” game like Knack. It’s a little old at this point, but it’s one of the three or four highest-rated games available on PS4, and I’ll take it. It cracks me up to see people clamoring for Knack, even while admitting that they know it’s not good. Like the simple fact that you can buy it in a plastic box at Best Buy makes it inherently superior.

Anyway, really interesting month. High five.

  • AWESOME lineup! I really like that you guys are now giving 1 big tittle + 1 indie for both the ps3 and vita, hope to see that on ps4 too on the future! I’m also looking forward to trying both ps4 indies. Thank you soo much sony, keep up the good work! Greatness awaits!

  • FEZ, Crysis 3, Proteus and Dragon’s Crown for PS3 this month? Is this real?
