PS Plus: Preview August’s Free Game Lineup

This month our PlayStation Plus members will receive two games free the day they release on PlayStation StoreRoad Not Taken on PS4 and Metrico on PS Vita. In addition to these titles, members will receive other popular games like Fez on PS4, Crysis 3 and Proteus on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown on PS Vita.

PS4 owners can enjoy two puzzle games with very different mechanics. First up, there’s Road Not Taken, where you’ll aim to strategically maneuver through a forest as efficiently as possible with only a limited amount of stamina, all while saving lost children. Then you can don a fancy hat in Fez, as you jump around pixelated 2D levels housed in a 3D world. Shift your view of the landscape with the hit of a button and journey to find the pieces of a Hexahedron.

On PlayStation 3, Crysis 3 offers the sandbox first-person shooter world that made the franchise famous and there’s a new toy to play with – the Predator Bow. If you enjoy multiplayer, there’s a new mode here called Hunter where two players are pitted against a team of CELL agents with the goal of slowly turning all of them into fellow Hunters. Then, there’s the soothing experience of Proteus, where you’ll explore procedurally generated islands with a dynamic soundtrack.

Finally, PlayStation Vita owners will get their hands on the highly-anticipated puzzle-platformer Metrico and critically-acclaimed action RPG Dragon’s Crown. Traverse a world filled with infographics in Metrico, but don’t be fooled by the clean presentation – proceeding through these charts isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. Invite up to three friends to join you in the dungeons of Dragon’s Crown, and thanks to Cross-Play you can even go adventuring with your buddies who have PS3s.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting August 5th. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Pretty good month in my opinion.
However, here is yet another case where I think we should be able to purchase games that are part of the IGC. We get Metrico free day 1? Well I wanted to support the developers who made it and actually buy the game, but it seems that won’t be possible to do until the game leaves the IGC in September correct?

  • Great month. Almost everything on here I have wanted to play but other stuff is in my backlog so I never made the purchase. With the news of EA’s direct access and PS’s stance on it vs XBOX ones games with gold…looking forward to hearing what Greg and Colin talk about this week on Beyond.

  • Awesome month!

Gonna Get Dragon’s Crown, Fez, Metric, Crysis 3 and Proteus!

  • I won’t buy anymore indie games for the ps4, because thats all their giving away free. I don’t like buying games then their free a month later. I almost bought Fez so glad didn’t know.

  • Not really interested in any of these, I already bought BOTH versions of Dragon’s Crown but looking forward to an influx of people playing online :)

Seeing a lot of good comments though about all these games, guess I’ll have to give them a shot. I heard good things about Proteus.

  • Love the lineup for August. I already have the Physical DC Vita version……I can’t resist Atlus or Vanillaware games.

I hope Road Not Taken will be Crossbuy future…so I can play the Vita version in the future.

  • Please clarify if Dragon’s Crown will be free for PS3.

Also, when is HBO Go coming to PS4? I feel sorry for the people who used HBO Go on ps3 and traded it in to get their PS4 just to find out HBO Go isn’t on it.

  • I bought Dragons Crown on launch day for the Vita. Spent over 100 hours getting the Plat. Anyone who hasn’t played this yet I hope you enjoy! Hope they make another one.

  • It would be nice, if a multiplayer, coop game came out as well on ps4, so we can play with friends, a game like trine 2.

  • Great Line Up, can’t wait to play Dragons Crown!!! This is a gret birthday present :D

  • It’s A terrible month. Only indies! Keep lying Sony and you will lose your loyalty clients

  • Regardless of the style of games people like or play this is a great lineup of games. Was already planning on grabbing Road Not Taken, have Fez, have DC on vita (PS3 version would be awesome), haven’t played any Crysis games so this is nice, have Proteus on PC and Metrico I haven’t heard about must have missed.

    Pretty excited.

  • Holy crap, this is one of the best months in a long time. And just as I decide to double down on my backlog, which is already mostly PS+ games. -_- Can’t wait to lose myself in Road Not Taken, Metrico, and Fez! I’ve been itching for a good Vita platformer for a little while now, and now I have 2!

  • AssaultMonkey150

Already bought Fez, but everything else is fantastic! Dragons Crown is amazing, and maybe crysis 3 multiplayer will come back a bit?

  • Dear Sr. Community Specialist, #Suikoden2onPSStore as a PS1 Classic. We wait and hope that SCEA folks really do listen to the fans.

  • So far, so good. My PS+ subscription is to end sometime in September, so I was giving Sony a chance to prove me the new format of PS+ IGC was worth it. July was ok. Now August seems good too. Not bad so far. Now let’s hope September is as good, if not better, and I’ll be renewing my subscription.

But seriously Sony, drop the prices on those Vita memory cards. And bring over 64GB cards at a reasonable price too. My 32gb that I paid an insane price for is constantly full, having to choose what to delete everytime I get new games digitally… And since you look like going all-digital in the future (not releasing Ratchet & Clank at retail, what the hell???) it’s not going to help growing the Vita user base, when they see how much more money they need to fork out for simply getting games on their device…

  • Guess I don’t need to buy a new subscription. Got Crysis 3 ages ago on a PSN sale. Until September!!!

  • ok i just want to ask when is the PS4 gonna get anything actually good titles not these indie titles im kinda regretting getting a ps4 at this point honestly i mean the games coming to ps3 are great like crysis 3 thats the type of stuff those great titles that should be coming out on psn plus for ps4 not these indie titles that are so boring that u can fall asleep in seconds i mean hell u guys have injustice at $8 release that on psn plus at least then it will be worth it.

  • I pretty much never comment here, but I think this is a great month. Metrico looks beautiful and The Road Not Taken has been hyped on here since last E3 with the indie game rollout and I was planning on buying both. Now I can spend that money elsewhere. I have Dragon’s Crown for Vita but now I get it for PS3 too? Total bonus. And I’m thrilled that people can play Fez who haven’t. If all you care about are AAA titles, you’re missing out on some brilliant stuff and PS+ is just handing them to you. Would you really rather have Knack (which I enjoyed, by the way) than something like Child of Light or Valiant Hearts or Transistor? Given that there aren’t that many AAA titles, should Sony just hand everyone the entire catalogue of games over the next few months? To each their own, I guess, but I don’t get it.

  • bluenightmare941

Good month happy with a Atlus’ game added to the lineup.

  • SaintClair_chapa

Ridiculous! It is ridiculous to have a PS4 and play games that has graphics of PS2! Even when the PS Plus will offer this?
No more indie games! We want games PS4!

  • just seriously STOP WITH THE INDIE TITLES ON PS4 ALREADY people are giving up on you guys you need to make a come back already if you guys were to make outlast and injustice this months free titles since we have no triple A titles to release then it would be GREAT customers would be HAPPY something im starting to see you guys dont seem to care the slightest about………..well more useless crap to fall asleep 2 on my ps4 FML

  • I wonder if Crysis 3 is the last game from EA we will see on PS+…

One last farewell game from EA to Sony gamers.

  • @BlueBl1zzard: Well, that is unless you create a new user (free to do, requires different e-mail address). Then you can buy anything you like at any time. The only downside I can see is that you must take care never to delete the new account, or you would then lose the corresponding download list and not own the game(s) any more.

@Macabro: They did reply to clarify it (on the first page): It will indeed be free for PS3. :)

  • Dragon’s Crown (PS Vita, PS3)

Record it in your heads lol … lets see if they dont change it next week and say oh whoops its only PSVita … lol

  • ppl not happy with indie titles should not renew their subscriptions and come back when the PS4 game catalog is big enough like when PS3 started showing cool games on PS+

  • @ #170 they wont be giving away “Triple A” on PS4 at least until next year bud so sit and wait LOL

  • Loking forward to Fez and Dragon`s Crown. Great Line up.

  • Proteus and Metrico look really cool. Looking forward to checking them out on my Vita :) Keep up the great work, PS+ team!

  • Ok. I thought I already had downloaded Crysis 3 previously on Plus. Turns out…I did. What’s with the repeat? Not complaining…just wondering. And wondering if any other games will follow. There’s definitely some I missed before I became a plus subscriber.

  • It’s freaking awesome that you get 2 games for each platform ( which I own) , but even more awesome the fact that you get those that are cross-platform making your library bigger accordingly . Beyond!!!

  • definitely happy with this months line up. thanks sony

  • @175 they have better choices of games to give away on psn plus on ps4 like for perfect example which was just on sale Injustice Gods amongs us that was $8 and great graphical games like Outlast that is still $20 but was on psn plus when the ps4 came out they need to re release that make some of the titles that are released graphic intense not these 16 bit pixel games that nobody cares about or heard or wants to buy hell i would rather have dragons crown on ps4 if it were possible or other titles that are a bit more graphics intense something that the ps4 can do that is great graphics example of a great graphics based game BF4 or warframe those 2 games are the only ones i have seen so far that are worth being on the ps4 not these indie titles that most of the community doesnt care about. ps4 users need something better sony get it together already before u lose people to xbox one

  • SilentSnipe18 check this out

@robbmx77: Great article about “indie games” hate by the pride of Long Island and candidate for presidency 20XX @notaxation
    http://t.co/boUTDHbOm7

  • finally a good vita lineup

  • Wow, this looks like a really good month, especially for Vita. 4 games if you include cross-buy games! Also Metrico looks really cool, so I’m excited to get this one free on release.

Last month I wasn’t really into the free game line-up, but I’m looking forward to August now.

    Thanks guys!

  • Definitely going to be downloading Dragon’s Crown. Been wanting to try that one out and I’m glad its going to be in the line-up.

  • not bad at all :)

  • its been almost a year since release of PS4 and we have not once received a free game for PS4. We have received INDIE games but nothing real. I understand its early but why not give us KNACK or some of the other releases that did not fare well.

Just a load of garbage tbh

  • Well is acually is another empty ps4 month. the sales are worthless and the games out like fez which most people bought of the 10 games ps4 has only indies games .The rest are all from last gen. In the first year Sony is doing a wiiu in the game dempartment-nothing for ps4. Well at this point sony is doing a ps go to the ps4. Ps4 is so much better than ps3 but I spent so much on games on ps3 I wish I didn’t trade it for ps4. I waited until this year and all the games are next year. Thank God I have a 3ds and wiiu

  • Baaaaaaaaaad month ever every games like a **** only one game Dragon crown

  • The Best SYSTEM (PS4) gets games with the worst graphics…. Way to make use of this hardware by giving us PS2 games….FAIL

  • Boy, oh boy! This is a good line-up! I mean, it’s excellent when it has variety. As a PS3 only owner, I was rather dissappointed at first, because I’m not a lover of shooters, and taking into account that we had Dead Space 3 last month, it was somewhat annoying having a similar game as the “central” game two months in a row. I wish we could have Dragon’s Crown on PS3 as well, and like many others, I was confussed if we were getting it or not. Then I read the reply to one of the first comments that asked that (reading some comments it’s useful after all).

Well, I’m extremely satisfied that PS3 is getting 4 games intead of only 2 :) I’ll give Crysis 3 a try, haven’t played any of the previous so it might be fun. I haven’t heard anything about Proteus. Finally, I’m really excited with Dragon’s Crown and FEZ :D Two brilliant games that I’ve been looking forward to play.

    Thank you PS+ team!

  • CyberSteak: Sure you’re not thinking of Crysis 2? It was added to the EU IGC in late 2012. Crysis 3 will be making it’s first appearance in August.

BTW, anyone else notice we’re getting almost the same games as EU this time around? (Last time, too.) They’re getting a Lego game since they already got Dragon’s Crown for Vita some months ago. But other than that, the lists are identical.

    blog.eu.playstation.com/2014/07/30/new-ps-plus-august-road-taken-crysis-3-fez/

Not too long ago, many were complaining about the perceived gap in quality between the NA and EU IGC. Now we’re virtually the same in every respect: format (all at once when the month starts) and content (same games Plus or minus a game to offset something that would be redundant).

I dunno. Just pointing it out.

  • I just realized that your survey on the current free games line-up is actually out of date. It shows the free games from a couple of months ago. June I think. No biggie, just pointing it out for you :)

  • Thank you for this lineup Sony. My only complaint is that I bought Dragon’s Crown last week as it was on sale and now, I learn that it is going to be free on PS Plus… Is there any way I can get a refund?

  • @187 the only so far good titles that are coming out on ps4 this year for my opinion is Destiny and Last of Us Remastered (even though there are party chat bugs like crazy and nobody is doing anything about it) and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare or warfighter idk what the title is but its better looking then battlefield hardline which is a payday 2 pvp game pretty much based on the looks of it plus the reviews. just yeah the only things u should get man is the 3 i listed for this year idk about the others im looking into it bloodbourne seems cool but looks like dark souls 2 in a new title and some of the other titles dont seem appealing at all

  • Great lineup this month! Love them all, but I’m most excited about Dragon’s Crown!

  • Meh. I’ll probably grab Crysis, but otherwise this is a “nothing” month for me.

  • @dodgedoors I love the trip A’s but for two days now I’ve been glued to Rogue Legacy. Fantastic game, modern day control and processing with the retro feel that brings me back to that kid playing NES when games like we see today were only a fantasy. People need to also realize that many of these indie studios are counting on the revenue to become tomorrow’s triple A titles. By not indulging you are actually denying yourself great games down the road.
