Upcoming PS4 System Update to v2.00 to Add Share Play, YouTube and More to Come

Since we first unveiled PlayStation 4 and its deep social capabilities, including the SHARE button, we’ve seen an outpouring of excitement from gamers. The PS Nation has rallied around a culture focused on sharing epic gaming moments through Live From PlayStation, interactive streaming, SHAREfactory, What’s New and Photo Mode in exclusive PS4 games like Infamous Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Let’s go a step further together. Let’s go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time. Today at the PlayStation press conference at Gamescom, we will deliver on yet another promise from the PS4 announcement and introduce Share Play, coming to PlayStation 4 later this fall.

The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll be able to play games with a friend just as if you were together in the same room. Let’s say that with games… you’ll be able to invite your friend online to play against the Miami Heat for the championship as the San Antonio Spurs in NBA2K, tackle the challenging Towerfall Ascension Quest Mode together, or aide, heal, and protect you as Igniculus in Child of Light’s local co-op mode.

With Share Play, you can even jump into a game to assist a friend. For example, if there is part of a game that you can’t quite finish, you can invite a friend to take over your controls. Like handing over the controller to a friend on your couch, your screen will be shared as your friend gets through the part of the game that has been giving you trouble—can’t get past that part in The Last of Us: Remastered when you’re hanging upside down? Get a little help.

Share Play will be coming to PS4 as part of the upcoming system software update v2.00, scheduled for release this fall. The update will also add highly requested broadcast and video share features, including both uploading you game play footage and dedicated app support for YouTube, which we mentioned on stage at E3. Finally, What’s New will get enhanced real-time activity through friend-of-friend suggestions, allowing instant access to friends’ and recently played games’ broadcasts, and a real name search function will also be added. More features to come when v2.00 is made available this fall, and we will have more to announce in the coming months..

We always want to hear your feedback and look forward to what you are most excited to experience together first Share Play when the feature comes to PS4 this fall. What will you co-op first with Share Play?

  • This is great as I’m a youtuber, but I will not be satisfied without DLNA support!

I hate having to keep an old console or stb connected just to stream my media the way I want to!

  • I was waiting on DLNA to come to PS4 as it stands my PS3 is still good enough. Looks like I maybe going to Xbox for mp3 and DLNA support. Get your stuff together Sony.

  • Forget all this other crap, I could careless, I don’t need it. I want to change my PSN ID, that’s it. When will we have this feature? Microsoft can do it, why can’t Sony? This is what I want, anything else really don’t care about.

  • I get it’s a system for gaming and what not but it’s killing ps4 sales not having mp3/m4v capabilities such as the xbox one. I have both ps3 and 4 and ps3 for the most part is still better if I wanna kick back and watch a movie and give my hands a rest from gaming I can’t. I’ve been faithful to ps now since the launch of psx but now I’m not so sure and I’m sure there’s thousands of people who feel the same way. Sorry sony you keep disappointing people with taking features away whereas Xbox stayed true. I think I know where my loyalties lie

  • Sony please answer why you have neglected the ps vita? How many years has it been since its launch and there’s still no real fire to it! It’s a great console but you don’t seem to be too bothered about it. for instance the games. There arent many games for it. Well games that pack a punch. Most games are just imports from the psp. Which by the way is really unfair! And shady! if I wanted to play a MAJORITY of games from the psp I would buy a psp! Youre just covering up the fact that youre not paying much attention to the now, THE VITA! Secondly it’s software updates omg! Could you give me a reason WHY OH WHY we can’t have multiple accounts on it?? ..continued…

  • … Continual…Why do I have to be scared to allow my girlfriend to play on it? Oh I remember now, because I’m scared she’s gonna ruin my stats, most likely delete my last saved point cause she’s gonna start her own new campaign. need I carry on?? when the vita came out I RUSHED to go get it but you don’t seem in any rush back at me your customer. Yes things take time and nothing ever turns out well when rushed but cummon it’s been years since its launch + how ever many years you had under your belt working on it prior its announcement…continued…

  • …continual… Sure you’ve added the great awesome remote play which we appreciate but I think you’re missing one fundamental point and that’s that ITS A PORTABLE DEVICE. it’s not just about going to the next room to continue my gaming as the tv is needed. It’s about when on my coach on my way to a festival , on a bus/trained on my way from work , parked outside waiting for the kids to finish school , when my dates running late and I’ve chosen to wait n chill in the car for the half hour she said. And with all that free time and no good enough connection to connect to my console for an awesome game at home, should be awsome games like the likes of your launch title Uncharted or even killzone mercenary. Stop neglecting the vita and what we deserve! I’m tired of hearing bad comment s about the vita and not have much amo to back it up.

  • I would really like the ability to change audio settings so I can output all audio from ps4 to both my headset and tv. Any chance of that happening?

  • Add support for USB video file playback please

  • How about being able to change our game tag ? My current is tag needs to be changed !!! Please help !1

  • Some game genres used to feature “Custom soundtracks”, and now can’t because no MP3 playback..
Honestly this is “next gen” isn’t it? Mp3 playback shouldn’t be such a difficult thing to put on Ps4… Get on that for the love of god.

  • So, what about Bluetooth Headset compatibility? Expanding compatibility with other products such as Bose, Beats and others would be great!!

  • Yea, i like Zookey’s suggestions below and yes Sony keep up the good work with the system updates that are current and coming. Yes i do agree it is a gaming system focus, but as well a lot of those things that were mentioned that were in the previous PS3 were awesome to have as well.
Especially now recently with the Septembers update that Microsoft just put out, You may need to now to work on looking into those things that Zookey mention.

But again, I am a Sony fan since day one and i know you got good things in store for all of us and i like the share play idea for sure. cant wait. Another thing would be nice is to have a lot of the really old classic games too….

  • I have yet to purchase a PS4, mostly because the ‘all encompassing’ features were completely left off. I’d like to eventually replace my PS3, not keep it around to do things that my PS4 can’t.

All I really want is robust DLNA support!!
    – FLAC playback (16/44 –> 24/192 or at least 24/96)
    – M2TS / MKV playback, etc.

As was said early on in the comments – Sony, work on the fundamental / core features please!! I have an Xperia Z2 phone and I love it – b/c Sony brought some innovation.

  • Its great that the PS4 is geetting these massive updates, like 1.7 back in April. We complain and take stuff we already have for granted. Instead of ranting here, PlayStation has the sort of petition section where you post things you would like on PlayStation, or agree with others suggestions. Thanks PlayStation. And BEYOND!
