The Playroom: AR Studio Out Tonight on PS4

Over at Japan Studio, we’ve been hard at work on new DLC for The Playroom. We’re proud to announce AR Studio will be launching later today on PS4 for the low, low price of free!

Using the PS4 Camera, The Playroom became a way for PS4 owners to broadcast live ‘shows’ through the Live From PlayStation app. This piece of DLC is entirely built around that central concept. With AR Studio, formerly known as Set Maker, you can use your tablet or smartphone (Android or iOS), to turn your living room into a broadcasting studio. Fill your sets with images or photos stored on your smart device, or draw your sets from scratch. You can also add various special effects to the screen like interactive smoke and lasers using your DualShock 4 controller. You will need to download the PlayStation App for your smart device, which you can get for free on either the App Store or Google Play.

Since our first reveal at E3 In June, we made a few additions to make an even better experience:

  • We added a ton of screen effects to make your video or broadcast more atmospheric, including Retro, Arty, Futuristic or Psychedelic effects. It’s all there for you to experiment with. My favorite is the vintage effect.
  • You can now also play your own MP3s by loading them on a USB memory stick, and we’re also throwing in a whole bunch of pre-set music tracks and sound effects for you to use.
  • We’ve improved the masks feature to include a few cool Sony classic heads for you to wear. Special thumbs up to the Helghast mask, popularized by Killzone, which hooks up to your DualShock 4 light bar. Totally awesome!
  • Speaking of DualShock 4, we’ve added controller effects like interactive colored smoked and a confetti canon for live celebrations.
  • Next, if you have recorded videos on your PS4, you will be able to play them back inside a dedicated projector. This is a really cool feature and great way for you to do live commentaries over your recorded game sessions and maybe even give out some advice to those watching you.
  • Finally, we’ve included a rating system for your broadcasts. We called back on our little AR Bots friends to deliver the results of your live polls. By using the “Interact button”, any PS4 viewers can join in and answer questions you ask them. It’s a great opportunity to run all sorts of contests or even host your own quiz show.

So whether it’s gaming, music, sports, cooking or just chilling, you can now make awesome shows right from your PS4 or just share a video on social networks or with friends and family.

AR Studio will hit PlayStation Store later tonight. Just download the add-on and it will automatically be added to The Playroom.

Let us know what you think as we are always listening to you! We hope you enjoy it, and we can’t wait to see some of your AR Studio live broadcasts on Live From PlayStation.

  • We’ll if your too simple to follow conversation/text, I can’t help you.

  • More games for the Playroom please. Updates and expansions to the current ones would be nice. My favorite our Ninja Bots, the robot, and air hockey; please make the air hockey online multiplayer and with different game modes and visualizations in game/gamemodes that feature in game challenges or perks! So much potential not tapped into yet. Playroom could be a living room staple. Please update more. I love what u all have done broadcasting thanks! :-)

  • Thanks for the hard work sony. I really do appreciate your efforts and willingness to continue to keep the ps4 number 1. And being dedicated to fans like me to ensure we continue to have an Epic Gameing experience! Only on PlayStation

  • Im having a tough time with the PlayStation Vita Second Screen app need instruction bot

  • I can’t seem to find the AR studio. Already installed the update for the playroom and the playstation app on my smartphone. Help??

  • It’s in the psn store

  • When will this support the vita? If at all? I don’t have a smartphone or tablet and really don’t want to buy one. Its kind of ridiculous you cant use the vita now. It your console for sakes?

  • I’ve downloaded and installed the ar studio and it’s nowhere to be seen in the menu. But it says I own it. Anyone know how to solve this.

  • Same problem here ^

  • Well hopefully this update will be able to install, unlike the infamous last one where a lot of people myself included were never able to install it because of some error.

  • VITA VITA Why we can t use the vita for this game :( I have a windows surface and cant get the playstation app ant my phone doesn’t support it as well .so sad please set it up for the vita cos sony say the vita would be the perfect companion for the ps4 but no its a tablet and a smartphone lol please sony

  • It’s kinda dumb this doesn’t work on Vita.

My Sony Tablet S wouldn’t stay connected while the UI loaded up. It’d disconnect every time. Had to go download the app on my boyfriend’s iPad just to use it.

    Lame.

  • Just got back from the store, almost bought a PS camera… Will most likely get really drunk tonight and go back for a purchase. Have been really, really wanting to use The Playroom.

  • Oh and then I just remembered, there is no PS app for my Windows Phone… Am writing myself a sticky note to remind my drunk other half not to buy the camera.

  • Uh Help?

I’ve reformatted my USB Stick and have only a folder labeled MUSIC in the root of the drive.. all my music is directly copied into that folder, like instructed in the companion app. But I have yet to have anything happen on my PS4 or my companion app when I plug in my USB Stick to import the MP3 files. Anyone care to shed some light as to **bleep** is going on?

  • Was hoping to see this become more “open”: what about those of us who want to livestream but NOT video games?

i see in the video for the new app that they show a band setting up to stream a live set
my question is where does the output from the mixer they are using feed in to the ps4?
using a mic in the camera would be HORRIBLE audio quality at best. More likely it would be unlistenable.

i looked at using an mbox as an audio input but it doesn’t work. mbox 2 i heard does but im not shelling out for one of those just to ps4 with it.

This feature COULD be really useful. i say could because there isn’t enough control for audio in.
as it stands, the ps4 is pretty much a brick until a legit game comes out. no, none of the games out now are legit unless you are under 20 or just started gaming in the last 4 years or so.

We need more function out of the ps4 and not just the stupid video game streaming. make it open so anyone can stream for anything and you are on to something.

    Peace
    Bassmeant

  • Yea i tried to route the audio through the controller’s mic input, but i couldn’t get it to work.

  • Morning
I just wonder how to delete the mask I’ve made on AR studio

  • My kids and I are loving this add-on so far! We cannot, however, figure out how to play our recorded PS4 videos through the dedicated projector. Has anyone figured out where to go to access the projector?

  • Was excited about this…. until I saw that it doesn’t support the Vita. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
