Kick & Fennick on PS Vita: New Details & Trailer

Hi everyone. Laurens and Vincent from Jaywalkers Interactive, here. Time flies. It’s been a year already since we’ve last shown our game, but we’re back and excited to finally share a bit more about Kick & Fennick for PS Vita!

The past year has been a crazy ride for us. We have been working closely with our friends at Abstraction Games to make Kick & Fennick the best it can be on PS Vita. The guys at Abstraction have conjured up some amazing tech that allows us to continually refine and improve the game on our side, while they make sure everything we do gets translated perfectly. Kick & Fennick has quite a lot going on so building this custom tech has been a challenge, but we think it was worth it.

The audio also had a big overhaul. Our good friend Jonathan van den Wijngaarden, who composed the music and created everything you hear in the game, has re-mastered the entire soundtrack and polished and added lots of new sounds effects.

As for the release of Kick & Fennick, it’s a bit too early to give an exact date, but we’re still on track to release in 2014.

We would love to know what you think. Leave your comments below, or drop us a line through our website at jaywalkersinteractive.com, Twitter or Facebook.

  • Just wanted to let you guys know that this game looks awesome. I love my Vita and the more quality games on the handheld, the happier I am. This looks really promising, especially the verticality of the level design and gameplay. Keep the updates coming!

  • Looking great! Looks like you really took the year to polish it. Glad to see it’s still in development because Vita + platformers = heaven!

Thanks so much! We hoped to have Kick & Fennick in your hands a bit sooner, but we’d rather be a bit late than a bit worse. The extra time definitely hasn’t been wasted!

  • This is glorious. Absolutely glorious.

  • Hey guys, Loving the Vita news…but quick question. I am looking to purchase a new vita, but I am unable to find a retailer who sells new ones at MRSP. Are there supply constraints or are you slowly phasing them out? Also, will there be any new bundles this holiday season? Thanks for your time and keep up the good work PS blog team!

  • This looks like a proper platformer. Good stuff.

  • This is looking ace on the vita, you guys have two copies sold, i hope kick&fennick become a franchise and the next game would be a 3D platformer.

  • Btw who is kick and who is fennick?

    • Vincent Bonefaas & Laurens Bruins

The boy is Kick and the little flying robot is Fennick. If you’re wondering why; Kick is both a Dutch name (my nephew is called Kick) and a reference to the ‘kick’ of the gun you use to jump around the levels, while Fennick’s design was based on a fennec fox. Thanks for your great comment, remanutd5!

  • This looks awesome! If it plays as good as it looks, I’m in!

Thanks Airleak! We like making pretty games, but nothing is as important to us as how they feel. We definitely spent a lot of time on the controls to make sure everything is smooth and snappy!

  • I haven’t heard of this until now. The trailer and blog post dont really give a lot of info on the game, other than it looks like a platformer. Please, when youre doing these posts, give as much info about the game as possible.

You’re right, yowzagabowza! To be honest, we just had too much to do and too little time to do it! We’re just two guys and with prepping for Gamescom, deadlines to meet and making the trailer, something had to give. There was a post on here a year ago, but that’s a long time indeed, so here goes:

Kick & Fennick is a platform adventure about a little boy with a very big gun. Not only can Kick use the gun to shoot down enemy robots, he can also use the gun’s powerful recoil to make huge jumps! There are more than 45 levels to jump and shoot your way through, with many cool challenges and obstacles to overcome, like bouncypads, teleporters, magnets and even a huge robot who just doesn’t want to give you a break!

      Hope everything’s a bit clearer now! :)

  • Would have been a good one to show at Gamescom. Maybe they are saving this for TGS. Vita Love.

  • @SigEp_Raiders (10), the game was at Gamescom. Sony is just dropping the ball when it comes to promoting Vita.

  • Keep it up guys. The game looks amazing and I can’t wait to play it on my psvita. But don’t hurry. Make the game perfect and with tons of levels and content and looong story haha Yo can do it! :D This will be a day 1 must buy for me ;) Good luck guys ;)

  • Wow, this is absolutely gorgeous. You have my money.

  • I am looking forward for this game
    Please keep supporting the VITA
I will buy this game for 2 reasons
    1) it looks just exactly like what I like!!!
    2) This is the kind of games I want to support and to have more for the VITA, not 16bit games …. Sorry guys… my opinion. I am not attacking the other Indies, but that is not what I want!

KEEP BRINGING MORE GAMES LIKE THIS PLEASE!!!

  • ******PLEASE REMAIN EXCLUSIVE!!!!

  • My lord, this looks amazing! How did I miss this! This is the first I have heard of this little gem. Really interested in learning more. The art direction and sound are fantastic. Nicely done! All we need now is a release date. I hope you can achieve your goal of releasing in 2014.

  • @4
Amazon has the Borderlands 2 new Vita bundle. Also, there are 3 in stock for the original Vita. Good luck, it’s a great console. Add a PS4 and the combo is seriously unmatched in gaming!

  • From the trailer, I don’t really understand what type of game this is. Is it more of puzzle solving, platforming or combat?

Does it support Vita TV/Playstation TV?

  • @GummyCore (18), from the YT description:

“Apart from shooting down enemy robots, Kick can make huge jumps by using his gun’s powerful recoil. Jump and shoot your way around 45 levels of collapsed skyscrapers, treadmills, bouncypads, magnets, teleporters and that big guard robot who’s never far behind!”

  • Rarely do I ever comment but, that trailer has me excited over the games release. You definitely have a purchase from me. Can’t wait!

  • yo amo esta clase de juegos ….y me gusta VITA como ninguna otra consola …la mejor para mi de lejos !!!!!

I’m running out of ways to say thanks and I really need to get some sleep before I start writing nonsense, so I thought I’d bundle the rest of what I wanted to say up here:

Thank you all so much for your great comments! It’s such a thrill to see you guys are excited about what we’re making. It’s a great boost and a huge motivation for us to give it all we’ve got during this last big sprint towards release. It’s not always easy to tackle a project like this with just the two of us, but you make it all worth it. This might sound super cheesy, but it’s very true, so screw it! Thanks a ton, everyone! :D

    Good night!

  • Looks great!

  • Just Amazing!!! Day one purchase for me sir. If you release a collectors edition I’ll buy one too. I’m a big fan not only because of the graphix and not because it is releasing for vita. I admre you guys beause the game reflects passion, heart, vision and big dreams. Just one request sir, please stay exclusive.

  • Oh my good this looks great!

I feel especially thankful to devs who invest their time into developing something for Sony’s little one. You guys rock! THANK YOU!

  • It definitely looks beautiful. If the gameplay is as good, I will enjoy this a lot!

    Groeten uit Nederland!

  • Just eyeing the screenshots, THIS is a balance between popping colors and detailed assets. My immediate impression of the environments was, “Mirror’s Edge with a broader palette.”

  • Looks awesome. Kudos to you guys for believing in the Vita more then Sony themselves, apparently.

How long is this game going to be? I mean, I’m not judging because some games are short AND awesome at the same time, but I’m just curious, as it’s seem the kind of game I love to spend hours playing.

The Vita needs more games like these, and it’s really a shame Sony aren’t advertising the Vita by showing titles like these. Some (myself included) would say they don’t advertise at all, but that’s another story).

Anyway, can’t wait to play this! :)

  • This game looks really, really great. I can’t wait for this!

  • Looks really great. The Vita is my main gaming device right now, and I’m glad games like this are coming out.

  • Looks awesome, seems interesting, and i’m sure it’s going a game that fits well on the platform. I’ll be waiting for the release date :)

  • looks great!

not sure if you are using vita’s features extensively but a ps4 port would be awesome.

  • The game looks awesome! Thanks for bringing it to the Vita. Can’t wait to play it!

  • Insta buy. This looks amazing guys!

  • Absolutely loving CounterSpy, after the ps plus preorder disount (decent price).
I know it will go on sale eventually, but worth it for Day One.

Make this less than $15, throw in a discount for Plus members, and you can more than likely count me in.
Looks good from the trailer, but will need more info.

Not AAA, but, maybe one day.

  • Also, if you plan to release this for PS4 or PS3 later, make it CrossBuy.

Trying to get a double sale on the same game, is lame enough to aggravate future buyers.

Chances are, it isn’t worth buying twice, but nice if you want to share the experience with your kids on their home console.

    Too bad Sony hasn’t learned.
How are those Sly Cooper trilogy sales going for you.

Not as good, as they could have been.

  • This is what I want for my Vita!!! Looks great and I know there are going to be a lot of challenging levels for this game. I can’t wait!!

  • This looks promising the thing that I hope is that there won’ be a complete version coming to te ps4 this needs to be just a ps vita title only.

  • Looking such an amaing game,Any news about the price please?:)

  • Wow, this looks like yet another fantastic reason to be a Vita owner still. The vibes I got from watching this trailer were akin to that of watching a near Pixar level film; from the boys animations. Something about this aesthetic hear is nostalgic for me, so props on that! Definitely a purchase upon release.

  • Day one, man, day one.
