PS Plus: Preview September’s Free Game Lineup

There’s a little bit of déjà vu going on as our PlayStation Plus members will once again receive two games free the day they hit the PlayStation Store – Velocity 2X on PS4 and Joe Danger’s release on PS Vita. Of course, there are other great titles including Sportsfriends on PS4, PS All Stars Battle Royale and Hoard on PS3 and TxK on PS Vita.

On PS4, Plus members will be able to download Velocity 2X and Sportsfriends. Velocity 2X is the sequel to Velocity Ultra and features arcade shooting and puzzle platforming with a cool teleportation mechanic. Sportsfriends is the perfect title to complement your parties, as it features 4 mini-games – BaraBariBall, Hokra, Super Pole Riders and Johann Sebastian Joust– to bring out the competitive side in everyone.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you can nab PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, the game where you can get together with friends and pit PlayStation characters like Sly Cooper and Kratos against each other. And Hoard, an action-strategy title where you’ll play as a dragon attempting to get as much gold as possible.

PlayStation Vita owners can pick up Joe Danger for the first time on the platform and enjoy some good old fashioned stunt racing, as well as TxK, a remake of the classic arcade shooter Tempest.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting September 2nd. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Already bought PSABR during the previous sale (still think Smash is better).
I’d never heard of Hoard before, though, and think that little gem will be a keeper.

  • Playstation I challenge you to the ALS ice bucket challenge if you haven’t been challenged yet.

  • Ugh… Next month hopefully will be better.. Atleast I got Diablo, Madden, and Last of Us Remastered….

  • So far on PS4 Resogun was the only good PS Plus title they gave. The rest was absolute garbage I wouldn’t waste my time even downloading.

  • Overall, Plus is still the best value for the money, especially when I think about all the free games and discounts I have received this year. However, I have to admit that this month’s offerings are lackluster at best, and it makes me a little nervous about the rest of the year for us Plus members.

  • So my guess is simple about such IGC: Since EA announced their subscription based service EA Access we on PS Systems with PS+ aren’t getting anything that is going to be in EA service. And this new september PS+ IGC lineup looks like to be of proof to that. And many Big Publishers could start dropping PS+ and get going to try to create their own subscription services. I don’t mind different games, genres, styles, category; but since 2011 as member of PS+ am quite disappointed to see this september lineup. It looks like PS+ model has been a success for Sony and others are willing to try it on their own, which is really bad for US! I love to have options and choices, but with everyone trying to publish their own games just in 1 service a.k.a their own proprietary service is a nightmare I don’t want to be a part of it.

  • Wow, I was just thinking that next week was going to be very expensive for me… This line up helped with that a lot!!!.

  • With “Destiny” being released in September, Sony obviously thought they could drag out garbage on + this month and have it ignored by all.

And that’s exactly what they did.

  • Can someone explain what happend to PS+?
I have fear that the quality of the games become lower…

  • Even though I don’t have either of the systems (yet…c’mon, paychecks!), VELOCITY 2X Kreygasm

Sportsfriends, that’s one I remember the hubbub around its release, some party game I need to try (yeah, I’m just scanning the game titles right now).

While I haven’t gone through it much, I’m fine with having bought PSASBR for five bucks (IIRC) already. Maybe now I can set up play sessions with a couple Plus friends. Just need a sale on that WipEout/TUS stage…

Hoard… Have that on PC, but haven’t played it much, if at all. Have this impression it was boggy there?

Joe Danger on Vita? Have the PS3 original with DLC and JD2 (the latter also on PC), but I’mma hafta look at the new Blog post on if this has the XBLA trimmings.

TxK’s got some “age” on it, dunnit, since I remember that name like a “far off” memory (I’d wager in reality, it’s just a matter of months). However, anything with a neon-colorful, dark-backdrop screenshot like that immediately catches my eye.

Not too shabby a month, though no “megaton” additions (V2X is undoubtedly meaty, though not retail; and PSASBR has fallen outta the spotlight).

  • Absolutely pathetic lineup this month. Only game worth getting would be PSASBR, which I already have.
    Get it together, Sony.

  • I’m not interested in any of the games here, but that’s the first time I’ve been able to say that in my 15 months as a Plus subscriber, so overall I can’t complain. Last month was fantastic, too. I’ve been playing Fez and Road Not Taken nonstop. I’ve got such a backlog that I can use a month to catch up!

    Looking forward to October.

  • Not even gonna namedrop this comment quote…
“GIVE US SOME DIVERSITY and stop shoving Indies down out throats! Indies are great, some people enjoy them. Offering them isnt a big deal, *if they are offered in addition to other types of games*.”
…as if “indie” is a genre. There’s an arcade shooter/platformer, a party game, a dual-stick/RTS thing, an Excitebike-alike, and a “tube shooter”. Of those, the closest they’re similar is that three involve shooting, though the axes/perspective differ. Elsewise, all distinct.

  • worst gamez

    OMG

  • About September PS Plus free games: Meh… weak month. About indie games: So I buy a PS4 console to be playing 8-16 bit games? Something is not right. Let indie games to Vita and PS3.

  • And to think I almost bought PSASBR yesterday. I’m not really interested in many of the other games, but I’ll take a whack at each of them and maybe they’ll turn out to be awesome.

  • I’ve given up on the IGC but Im annoyed cause I have to pay for this stupid subscription to play Destiny… I thought microsoft gave there fans a middle finger at E3 2013 but sony has been giving its fans a middle finger since the release of the ps4

  • We had Velocity Ultra a few months ago. Wasn’t worth it then, won’t be now. I don’t understand why they’re rehashing it already, let alone why it’s worth making it a free game.

    Sportsfriends might be okay.

Playstation All Stars is not even worth downloading. How many times has it been $5 since it came out? A slap in the face both to those who bought it cheap and those who expected something good.

Hoard has been out for 3 years now. It’s as boring an indie game as it gets. Not worth downloading.

Joe Danger not worth. Didn’t we just have this in the IGC? Moving a game to a different platform and then rebranding it as ‘new’. Classy.

TxK…I don’t even know what that is. It looks like every boring, faux retro shoot ’em up I’ve ever seen.

I’ve been a part of Playstation Plus for more than two years now. This is the first time there’s been a month with absolutely nothing of note. This is really depressing, Sony. You have always been faithful to your customers. They expect better.

  • @190 dogbert784 – “Saying “I don’t like Indies” is like saying “I don’t like shooters.” No one cares. And people smarter than you will keep making them.”

Really more like saying you don’t like any game that’s not from a certain country, or studio. These folks are completely disregarding the actual genre of the game, and rather just focusing on the label describing the background of the game makers.

  • Meh, not a great lineup, especially for us PS3-only owners. Although…It’s not the worst lineup I’ve ever seen (anyone remember when they gave that Foosball game? THAT was a horrible month).

Hopefully next month will be better (but until then, Destiny!)

  • Gotta say guys, you’re really dropping the ball. I know so many friends thinking of dropping plus, especially because of how we’re not getting anything but indie games on the Ps4. I love indie games, but making everyone play for plus and then giving us nothing but indie games every month while Ps3 still gets triple A games is a little insulting for the new console owners. I’ve never been one that have considered the competitors system, but the deals I’ve seen them putting up lately and games compared to what you guys are giving us is making me highly consider just dropping plus and switching over. Been a supporter from Ps3 day one and also owned a ps2 and ps3. For the first time, I can’t recommend you guys to friends anymore. I expect your competitor to gain ground over the holiday months and I gotta say, I think Sony is the one allowing it to happen.

  • PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2

  • i sick of this 8 bit indie games, no story, somewhat good mechanics, but pixel art, on my ps4? come one is such a waste, i rather they do nes cartridges i would buy those, but these? not even if given away for free, this month velocity is the only good thing since resogun, then 2 months i a row that i’m having crappy games for ps3 and vita, i should suspected when you cut the prices on subscriptions last year as a “promotion”, also what are your plans as a sorry gesture for the events of the past saturday? we want at leas one comercial big name game in the ps4 the next month.

the xbox games with gold have better free games for one and 360, since i have both i’m not bored, but you ps pals have to step up!

  • I appreciate that since you switched to monthly I’ve noticed that there’s also been an effort to ensure that multi-platform games are made cross-buy. It was really cool last month that that applied to Dragon’s Crown since that game isn’t even normally cross-buy. I don’t have a PS4 and I don’t intend to purchase one until there are some good Japanese RPGs for it out here (so I will be waiting awhile) so it’s appreciated that I can enjoy games like Velocity 2x and Sportsfriends instead of feeling punished for not having all 3 platforms.

    Good on you, Sony.

PS. Muramasa was great, another Japanese game sometime would be nice.

  • PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale sequel please!

  • If you think im going to resubscribe in october just for a driveclub demo, youre crazy. Too bad for sony i dont play online, so im not forced to buy plus.

  • I love PS+ however, this month has a list of games that for once disappoint me. I’m not a huge fan of shooters i gave pixel junk a shot and the only FUN shooter has been Resogun. Joe Danger seems like it is the only real DIFFERENT type of game thats being handed out but not everyone has a vita. Sad day to say that vita games have out trumped PS3.

Also wanted to know if it were possible if we could get the old PS+ format back, I’d rather have 3 excellent PS3 games 1 excellent PS4 game and 2 vita games per month rather than getting a ton of indies.

Also speaking on indies why are the great indies so expensive with no day 1 discount!

  • @116 detictiveconan – “I own Joe Danger 2 already so I don’t really care to play the lesser version.”

As posted by a later comment, the Vita version is the first two JDs and more (namely characters, but even that would still mean the only “less” is visual resolution).

@129 soundandvision77 – Oh! Yes! Totally make the PSP version of HOARD free, too! I actually miss the IGC including PSP titles, since I still have the yesteryear Sony portable.

  • I like how Vita has been getting more than 2 games thanks to cross-buy.

  • @271 AkiraFudo-EC – Nothing in this lineup is pure pixel art. Velocity 2X and Sportsfriends look to be 2D visuals, and the latter has pixel art at times (and, in looking up images to be sure of myself, some characters from B.U.T.T.O.N.?), but I’m sure the PS4 games are all crisp where it counts.

  • where is drive club ps plus edition? O-o’

  • Nothing for me that I care about and don’t already own. But don’t really need any distractions from Diablo and Destiny in a couple of weeks.

  • As of every month since the PS4 I’m disapointed by the free games offered, so far, the only reason worth getting PS+ is to be able to play online on PS4.

There’s cleary a lack of AAA games and way too many indie games.

Concerning full releases, not freebies, where are the famous RPG’s Playstation in renown for? Luckily that will change with Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt coming this November and February, but there are still no JRPG announced that are properly shown (FF15, FF Type-0 HD, Deep Down).

I really hope this coming TGS that the focus will be on JRPG.

  • Best Plus Games Yet.

  • Wow, back in June the only game I liked was Trine 2 (it was amazing). In July, I only liked Muramasa. Last month all the games were horrible (Road Not Taken was meh). This month looks like it’s even worse. And yes, I do try every single game that comes out every month since I own the PS4, PS3, and PSVita. This is just my opinion though, every one has their own likes and dislikes.

  • This is by far the worst PS+ update I’ve ever seen. Wow. Another one of these months and I’ll probably just stop paying for PS+.

  • I’m excited. I was thinking about buying Hoard last week.

  • Interesting to see another Velocity game free for Plus. I think those games are ok but I know a lot of people that love them. That is awesome for them. PlayStation All Stars is incredibly underrated. I have had it since day one and am pumped to see it get more of an audience.

Side Note: I know not everyone cares about trophies but isn’t TKX completely jacked up trophywise to the point you can’t get half of them?

  • Pure Garbage

  • Awesomeness!!!!! Velocity ultra sweet. Thanks sony

  • So glad that in March we had Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I am actually playing same game that I played on PSP for years.

  • @286 GoatsAreCool

yup alteast 2 trophies have no history of anyone ever getting them. Hate when put glitched games like that PSN plus.

  • Well…. yeah, I’m disappointed. The PS4 is still young in its life cycle, so I’m not surprised that it’s still getting indie games, especially with Sony being so openly supportive of indie game developers. After November when PS4 hits it’s one year anniversary we might start to see some retail titles going available, but for now having just the PSN games for it isn’t all that bad. I don’t know much about Velocity 2X, and most everyone seems to be psyched for it so it might be fun, but I hate sports games so the Sportsfriends is just like PES or NBA games waste of space a few months back (for me, anyway). PSASBR isn’t bad, considering I don’t own it yet and have come close to buying it on the sales several times before, but I’m not overly hyped or excited for it. Hoard…… I honestly had never heard of it before this so I’m not too thrilled. And still don’t own a Vita, but I’ve played Joe Danger 2 when it was free and wasn’t impressed.

  • I mean, people express their ideas about the lineups and some are disappointed by it, some are really excited for a title or two, some are hyped about the entire set, and then others express disbelief at how people who aren’t excited or are let down can even complain. It’s really not that hard to understand. There have been months in a row full of high-profile titles, and then that trend stops with a month of rather lackluster titles (again, just my opinion) so it’s not hard to fathom some people would be bummed out or let down, and there’s nothing wrong with them saying so (though, some may be a bit extreme in their negativity). Otherwise there wouldn’t be these comment threads.

  • This Month, No Bueno!

  • I been sitting on a plus card waiting to use it this month. But I’m not a platformer or fighter fan…. So September list has nothing for me. But I was dragon crown. Hum what shall I do?

  • Ah, apparently I’m mistaken on Joe Danger Vita having both games. From the following PS.Blog post:

“But what about the sequel, Joe Danger 2: The Movie!? Well, it’s still on the way! We’ll have news on that soon-ish.”

  • Love how most of these games are cross buy too!! Sweeeeeeet.

  • You guys act like you’ll be playing anything other than Destiny this month anyway, funny ;)
