PS Plus: Preview September’s Free Game Lineup

There’s a little bit of déjà vu going on as our PlayStation Plus members will once again receive two games free the day they hit the PlayStation Store – Velocity 2X on PS4 and Joe Danger’s release on PS Vita. Of course, there are other great titles including Sportsfriends on PS4, PS All Stars Battle Royale and Hoard on PS3 and TxK on PS Vita.

On PS4, Plus members will be able to download Velocity 2X and Sportsfriends. Velocity 2X is the sequel to Velocity Ultra and features arcade shooting and puzzle platforming with a cool teleportation mechanic. Sportsfriends is the perfect title to complement your parties, as it features 4 mini-games – BaraBariBall, Hokra, Super Pole Riders and Johann Sebastian Joust– to bring out the competitive side in everyone.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you can nab PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, the game where you can get together with friends and pit PlayStation characters like Sly Cooper and Kratos against each other. And Hoard, an action-strategy title where you’ll play as a dragon attempting to get as much gold as possible.

PlayStation Vita owners can pick up Joe Danger for the first time on the platform and enjoy some good old fashioned stunt racing, as well as TxK, a remake of the classic arcade shooter Tempest.

All of these games will be free for Plus members starting September 2nd. If you want to see these titles in action, check out the video below.

  • Its really sad to see the continued demise of Vita at Sony’s hands as well as the total lack of reasons to turn on my PS4. If I want Indies, I’ll buy them for a quarter of the price on Steam and Android

  • Not a good month for me. I’ve seen how PS+ has lost a bit of quality over the last 3 – 4 months. Now that we have to have PS+ for online gaming on PS4 Sony has decreased the quality of the games included in the program. That and the fact that Vita is not getting any new games, PS3 is slowly becoming last gen and PS4 has no new games.

  • To everyone complaining about the games this month, have you even watched videos of some of these? Velocity 2X is going to be awesome – and it’s not even out yet! You get it DAY ONE for free. Sportsfriends has an 82 on metacritic and looks like a blast as well. On top of that you get a multiplayer brawler that you’d have to make an effort NOT to have a good time with if you had some friends come over and play with you. Everything else is just gravy.

    Sheesh. Get over yourselves.

And to the guy that said “May as well be PS1 games” — Really?? If this is the type of games that were on the PS1 I seriously need to go buy a PS1 today.

    Good grief.

Anyway, can’t wait for Velocity 2X. That was going to be a day one purchase for me.

  • Nothing for me this month. Kinda wondering how September scored as high as 2.5/5, seems artificially inflated.

Still enjoying Dragon’s Crown from last month.

  • bleh. Another sad month of junk. How many more months until we start getting the treatment we got on ps3? We got good games there. Little Big Planet 2, Borderlands 2, Payday 2, etc. I keep talking my friends into the getting the console over competitors with the added bonus of a couple of free games a month, but so far its just been tablet quality crap that I have a hard time justifying. I don’t guess it will matter later on though as games like Destiny, Dragon Age, Shadows of Mordor, The Division, Assassins Creed Unity, and other games start to appear, but for right now I’m saddened by the shovelware. Still love you.. just hate the junk I’m getting for my dollar right now.

  • @hoop-de-la-hoop

Wow, people have an opinion that contrasts with your own. Who would have thought? Maybe you should get over yourself.

And yeah, Velocity is a good game…for a cell phone.

  • Mmmm for me just Velocity 2X, so far,not the best month I must say.

  • @251

strider was good too. i was hoping that would be a sign of ps4’s ps+ finally taking the turn away from indie-spam, but unfortunately the offerings since then have been a HUGE step backwards.

  • More crappy games for PSN subscribers… The quality titles has, indeed, declined this year.

  • Are we going to get Metal Gear Solid Revengeance here in the US? Because this wait/uncertainty is getting ridiculous.

  • Not one of these games has a full on story for a single player campaign! All of your hardcore gamers are very disappointing this month….. :(

  • Considering I was going to buy Velocity Ultra 2X and SportsFriends looks like it could be very interesting to me, I am very happy. PS Plus is not very expensive and when I add up the discounts I receive and the free games I get, I probably am getting $3 of value for every $1 I put into PS Plus…conservatively. Thank You Sony :)

  • Velocity 2X free??? Day one???? Ok, so you guys don’t want my money. Well, you’ll have it on destiny’s launch anyway…

  • Not a great month, definitely not as good as last month, but Velocity 2x saves the day. Definitely looking forward to it.
Here’s my IGC wishlist for future months:
    PS3 games
    The Last of Us
    Final Fantasy 13-2
    Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13
Red Dead Redemption – Game of the Year
    Catherine
    Darksiders 2
    Rain
    L.A. Noire
    Beyond: Two Souls
    Dead Space Extraction
    Infamous: Festival of Blood

    PS Vita games
    Persona 4 Golden
    Tearaway
    Killzone: Mercenary
    Rayman Legends
Jacob Jones & the Bigfoot Mystery
    Escape Plan
    Resistance: Burning Skies

  • Noooo I just bought Sports friends not too long ago, wish I could do something bout that.
But super fun game (If you have actual friends)

  • These PS4 game look like total garbage.

  • @tharsessus

“And yeah, Velocity is a good game…for a cell phone.”

Hahahahahhaha. Please show me a game as good as that on a cell phone. Did you even play the first ones? Some of the best shmup gameplay in several years.

You may go back to your cell phone games now.

  • Wow, worst selection ever. Nothing for me this month. I agree with some people complaining about too much indies (a waste of PS4 hardware imo)

  • See if I get psn again… (At least for a while). All these indie games are getting pointless and annoying. GIVE US SOME GOOD GAMES ALREADY SONY! Or else I’ll move to xbox.

  • The monthly line up is worse every month. I’ve had ps+ since the beginning and this is the worst lineup so far. Give us something we remotely care about!

  • I personally love all these new additions because 1) I don’t have any of them and 2) it looks varied enough that it will provides hours of fun! I’m excited for TxK and Velocity 2X the most but the others will also find some play time for sure :) Hope these are all Cross-Buy enabled because for once I can own all 6 games on my PS3/PS Vita without even owning a PS4 =D

  • I jus want to know who selects the games. I have a ps3 and a ps4 and i’ll just play velocity 2x and playstation all-stars.

    Could be better, so better

  • I already own the only good game ( PS all stars). You guys are really forcing these indie games down our throats. The last three months have been extremely underwhelming. Its time to vote with my wallet and unsubscribe to PS Plus. You guys have been having amazing sales though.

  • Some months, there’s so much content that I feel like a thief. Some months, I feel like I’m getting about what I paid for that month. This is one of those months. But I’ve yet to feel cheated by a month of PS Plus. A rental of these games would cost more than what I’m paying to play them this month. Still, I hope that the supply of PS3 games isn’t drying up. Having PSASBR as the “big” title this month sure makes me wonder.

  • jamas habia hecho una queja por el instant game… pero el mes de septiembre es una real mierda!!!

  • The first time ever I got totally disappointed since I subscribed from year and a half…….
they are good games that is sure, but for someone who is looking for a story in a game, nothing is there…….

  • That Velocity 2X is gonna be awesome on PS4 and Vita, so that’s a pretty sweet deal. Overall though, I’d have to say this is the calm before the storm, after all we should expect big things during the fall months from PS Plus free lineup.

  • Do you even READ the monthly guess threads on the forums every month? We basically tell you what we want to see, and its not this. FFXIII or Tales of Xillia 1 are both better than this months ps3 dreck. Hell ill bet ppl wouldve taken a dlc pack, say reign of giants for dont starve over sports friends. and TBH madden 25 on either system wouldve made sense too

  • I bought PS All Stars 2 months ago, and Platinum the game in 3 days, it’s a great game and it’s very active, although lots of people online are level 999 with their characters…

  • Ok…see as a ps4 owner I feel we are getting the short end of the stick with these indie games. We are forced to pay for ps+ in order to play the few games we do have online while ps3 players having ps+ is a option. Either give us better games to play or take away the ps+ requirement. Also if anything happens to the psn that means no online gaming with the ps4 but if you have a ps3 you can still play online…this is also unacceptable for we the ps4 owners….you took our money…force us to get ps+ and give the other platforms better bonuses for being optional ps+ members…that is wrong…

    digging the avatar

  • Not feeling any of these games

  • I’m sorry but i’m tired of all these crappy ps plus lineups. Outlast and Bioshock infinite have been the only two ps plus games worth downloading. Yes, those two rocked. But these others are quite boring. C’mon Sony, bring out some good games. These indie games suck as well as the others I’ve seen.

  • velociity is sounding amazing seeing as i dont own allstars thats 2 games on that list that sound really good rest them meh probly one weakest months of plus in while.

but theres 2 games that seem interesting r they mind boggling nope but its free 2 games to knab more trophys in how i look at it
heres hopeing guacmelle turbo edition is octobers and maybe valaint hearts for ps4.

ps3 i was hoping it was saints row 4 this month but oh well

  • Im glad to these games on PS+. Im personally not looking forward to the indies but the fact that PS+ is giving games that aren’t all puzzle or side scrolling games. There are at least different genres of games. This gives me hope that the future will continue to bring this variety, even though they gave out the original velocity and I didnt play that either and I bought PS All Stars off a flash sale for $5. I cant even complain when it was only $5 though. Keep it up Sony

  • Wow! What a great month! I’ll play everything but Hoard. I can’t believe you guys are giving away Velocity 2X for free, that’s totally insane!

  • Hoard and allstars are great games and will be great addition to any library…but I already own them, next month is a meh for me.

  • Velocity 2X wow never expected that to go plus at launch thx in advance

as for the other games meh ok I guess long time plus members probably brought All Stars when it was dirt cheap awhile back and we had joe Danger already. ore trophies to earn either way.

    Now bring on Destiny

  • Can’t really say I am thrilled. I guess “indifferent” would be the word. Anyone who didn’t think that PS All-Stars was coming to PS plus was kidding themselves. Not shocked at all. Anyone know if Hoard has trophies? Might be the saving grace of this month. Never been so excited about next month’s (October) offerings this early before…

  • @324 blemishedsumo – “FFXIII or…are both better than this months ps3 dreck.”

ITT: Misidentification of what makes media good.

As for wanting story, I’d suspect Velocity 2X to have a story mode. Will it be hours of interspersed CGI babble-fests? Prolly not. But then, not every game needs to be FFXIII.

…That is, no game should be FFXIII.

  • Besides velocity nothing here for me. Though I wonder why people are complaining. Your not going to be happy with every month and thats a fact.

  • look at what they do with the money: upgrading the network, maintain cloud saving servers and paying the game companies to put the games on igc. Of course the game quality will go down a little

  • Huh. I like the sound of those. ALL of the PS3 ones (which is all that matter for me). Kind of bummed I let my subscription lapse. Murphy’s law of quitting plus. Hope they go on sale soon.

  • I rarely log in to comment on the blog but I couldn’t bite my tongue on this one. Possibly the worst month of PS+ I can recall since it was started. The PS4 games are straight up a slap in the face to us owners. Yay, a Vita remakes and a PS3 indie for my awesome system, gee thanks so much! My PS3 didn’t fair much better, with a mobile quality Hoard, and a game Sony completely dropped all support over patching promised trophies for the characters and DLC, aww so sweet. My Vita may get 30 mins worth of Joe Danger and pretending TxK was never offered. Luckily back log is still good and this will be the month to catch up.

  • Velocity 2X free for PS4? F*** YEAH!!!!!

  • The only benefit for me this month is that I will own PSASBR on both platforms so I can try boost those online trophies now.

    Otherwise….next month.

  • Wow, HUGE FAIL! And here I thought last month was the worst ever for PS+. September better have some good discounts for PS+ members.

  • Aside from Velocity 2X, this is undoubtedly the worst month in the entire time that I’ve been subscribed to PS Plus.

  • Seriously, I think the blog needs a moderator to block condescending comments about smaller, indie games. Must be all those dudebros who want bigname games that just got released. It is just upsetting to see so many demented commenters who think only movies are Michael Bay explosions and JJ Abrams’ lens flares, and apply the se logic to games.

Be open minded, kids, and please, just please, if there’s a game you want to be on PlayStation Plus, go out and buy it.

  • I would like to echo the requests for Metal Gear Solid Revengeance in NA.
