Destiny: Preload Now and Prepare for Tuesday
Destiny

Hi everybody – Since we’re just days away from the launch of Destiny on PS4 and PS3, I wanted to let you know that the game is now available for pre-load on PlayStation Store in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.

This means if you’ve pre-ordered Destiny digitally via PlayStation Store, you’ll be able to begin downloading the game on PS4 or PS3 starting now. Once you’ve downloaded the game, you’ll be ready for the official Destiny launch this Tuesday, September 9th.

Here are your options for pre-loading Destiny:

  • Take no action; Destiny will begin automatically downloading, provided that “auto-download” has been enabled on your PS4 or PS3. Over the next few days, your system will check for updates and the game will begin downloading by Monday, in time for the release on Tuesday.
  • If you can’t wait until then, you can enable the download manually. In PlayStation Store, navigate to the Destiny game page and click the “download” button. If you haven’t yet preordered, you can preorder and then begin downloading.

The game won’t be available to play until 12:00am Pacific Time / 3:00am Eastern Time on September 9th, but you’ll be ready for the ultimate Destiny experience on PlayStation.

Have a great weekend!

  • Digital Downloads in their current state are a bad deal. I’m glad I was able to cancel my PSN pre-order and I’m sorry some of you were not able to do the same.

This delayed 12 PDT start of Destiny is maybe the dumbest thing I’ve seen, next to the staggered start we saw with the early release of SW:TOR.

Until such time the digital download is cheaper than buying a physical copy of a game, I see no reason to support downloads. If I had pre-ordered from someone like Amazon, I would probably have been playing this afternoon when the servers went live.

The whole kabuki dance about release dates is such a farce. If the servers were going to go live this afternoon, the game should have been released for everyone. Anything less is undoubtedly going to make for bad feelings amount those who have to wait.

What has this whole experience done for the release of Destiny? It’s going to make people more inclined to complain and nit pick the game. Why? Because they are mad. Good job Sony and Microsoft… way to undermine your content providers.

  • When I per-ordered this game this was not made apparent to me:

“The game won’t be available to play until 12:00am Pacific Time / 3:00am Eastern Time on September 9th, but you’ll be ready for the ultimate Destiny experience on PlayStation.”

    Flag on the play Bungie/Sony!!!!!!

  • Very disappointed with the zone lock. Sony should be able to determine your location and time zone with your IP address and release at 12 midnight everyone -___-

  • So ****ing Pumped. 3 Hours Couldnt Seem Farther Away!

  • Destiny releases in a few minutes on the east coast but I’m drinking a big ole cup of nope till 3am thanks to you. Never again Sony. Really ruined the experience.

  • I picked up the digital guardian edition..ps3 loaded up but where/when do I get the ps4 version?

  • Sigh…read back a few looks like this is all a big mess. Which is why I normally stuck to discs but this digital was the best option for playing with the kid. Good thing I wasn’t planing on playing tonight anyway.

  • #405 According to Bungie Sony will deliver it by Sept 10 2014 6pm PST

  • Thanks for ruining an other wise epic night with my buddies. Sigh.. Why did I choose digital?

  • Thanks for screwing everyone who’s NOT in the PST timezone, Sony. We all greatly appreciate it. I for one, will never get another digital pre-order. Or a digital copy of any game for that matter. Sony wants it’s users to enjoy digital content, and to grasp it…well you’re doing a terrible job. You’ve went ahead and p-oed a bunch of fans/customers that will probably never return to digital. Same as me. That’s too bad. Good luck finding other people to F over! Thanks again!

    Pathetic.

  • Good thing I have my bloody mary in hand. Watching all the folk cry because the online only game launches at the same time for everyone, and not by region, is truly convenient. Feel free to wipe those tears on the edge of my glass while me and my squad of Mirages burn away infested in Warframe. :)

  • Way to pull the rug right out from under me. This is such a bad marketing launch your timer is UP!! Where is the game?

Why are we just now hearing to stay up 3 hours just to get a crack at it. Good night have fun west coast way to think about the rest of the US!?!?

  • Playstation gets a bigger cut of my purchase, and is giving me an inferior product.

Bungie’s servers are live, I have played other day-one digital releases before 3am (Infamous Second Son). So why the delay? Why not pick 9pm PST?

  • I am ****ed off about this pre-load bull**** I will never buy a digital copy again if I went to the store I could be playing already, and the digital should be so much cheaper considering that the companies don’t have to buy materials like cases discs and other packaging or pay for transportation to retail stores I want some money back feeling ripped off :(

  • I am very unhappy about about this pre-load scam I will never buy a digital copy again if I went to the store I could be playing already, and the digital should be so much cheaper considering that the companies don’t have to buy materials like cases discs and other packaging or pay for transportation to retail stores I want some money back feeling ripped off :(

  • This is total BS Playstation. .the game should be honored w people ti.e zones…now because I pre ordered at your store I have to wait a additional 3 hours to play while my buddies are playing that went to gamestop and picked it up at midnight! !!!

  • Jus because your damn head quarters might be based in California …don’t mean that the rest of us should suffer ..I’m in Ohio it’s 1 in the am here…

  • I WILL NEVER PRE ORDER FROM PSN AGAIN !!!

  • Dear Sony,

You asked us to embrace a future where we wouldn’t need disks. You dazzled us with promises of being able to share a game with friends who haven’t even purchased it. You swore that you would reward our loyalty and faith.

And now, I’m sitting and watching old episodes of Futurama on Netflix on my PS4 because I have to wait until 3 to play the game you promised I’d play first…

Luckily for me, my schedule allows for me to get about two hours of play in before I need to rack out for work tomorrow. But the extra wait time also allows me ample time to reflect on your shoddy service to those of us who opted to give you MORE money than those who bought the physical copies. You see, being an older gamer, I can reflect on your business model based on comparison to my own experiences in business.

  • You know that you’ve managed to piss off a substantial client base, but rather than do any sort of damage control, you’ve been censoring social media, and blatantly ignoring the issue here on your own blog. I’m sure I don’t have to tell y’all, but in business (as in much of life), perception is reality. You may not have had any malicious intent; in fact, I’m pretty sure I know your exact reasons for locking North America copies until 00:00 PDT. The problem isn’t with intent, it’s with the perception of your clients/fans/supporters. Right now, you’ve shown just how little you actually care about your fan base, as you can’t even spare a cursory response to explain the reasoning behind your choice (hell, I’m giving you a word for word response to the argument):

  • “To all Frustrated Guardians,

As many of you have come to realize, we have chosen to lock access to Destiny for our digital customers until 00:00 PDT. While the inconvenience and frustration were not our intention, we understand your feelings and would like to take the time to explain our reasons for doing so. You see, the video game economy is a tricky one, made up of cogs in a grander machine. While we here at Sony want nothing more than for our players to have nothing but the greatest experience ever, we also realize that some people depend on the industry as a source of income. The reason we opted to lock access digitally until 00:00 PDT was to allow physical retailers at traditional points of sale to conduct business without fear of losing customers to the digital media downloads. After all, how many students have worked through college at a retailer like GameStop or Best Buy?

  • It is already becoming difficult for GameStop to keep up with the demand of players in the modern times. In an effort to keep an industry we all love afloat, Sony Computer Entertainment America opted to ensure successful launch events all over the country. If you feel as though you have been penalized for living outside of the Pacific time zone, please accept our sincerest apologies. We will take the criticism into account for all future launches of digital content. It is our greatest hope that we can learn from this experience and continue moving forward to ensure the greatest environment for players everywhere!”

Had that been your response, we’d have been pissed, but at least felt some satisfaction from getting a response. And so long as you followed through on your commitment to taking the criticism in stride and putting the lessons learned into place in the future, I think we’d be hard pressed to truly fault you. Well, at least those of us with a capability to think logically and maturely.

PS: For the right amount of money, I’d be happy to leave my current job to handle these types of things for you. Damage control is kind of my thing.

  • its crap that i purchase this to avoid crowds due to anxiety and yet i have to wait two more hours to play……. glad i took today off for this.

  • Lol I will NEVER!! Pre-Order the digital copy of a game again, tried to support the digital side thanks to Sony not anymore. ( Go hard or wait long) lol
And I’ll take some blame I didn’t even see that ” midnight PDT ” smh just a lesson learned.

  • You’ll be getting no more digital preorders from me for AAA games Sony. Good job I was gonna go full digital this gen but not anymore and for those being like “Cry More” when you put out an add with play it first digitally on PS4 and encourage people to do so only to then turn around and punish you for doing what they asked its kinda not cool I mean its not like the servers aren’t up because they have been for 16 hours.

  • @418 where was that written?

  • I think pre load is the stupidest thing sony ever did I pre Oder destiny now I got to wait 3am to play it the most stupidest thing ever is that when you buy the game at 12 on the psn store it take me a 1/2 a hour to download it.

  • This is absolutely unacceptable, is it only 3 hours, yes, do I want to be the very first one to play, no. Was I looking forward to playing this game at midnight with my friends yes. Have I been listening to them talk about playing the game for 1.5 hours now while I still wait for my game to be unarbitrarily locked? YES and that’s not OK!

If everyone couldn’t play till 3am that’s fine. But to charge me the same money for a game I can’t return, can’t resell and now can’t play at a proper release time is absolutely not okay!

  • @423 It wasn’t. Had that been their response, I think a lot of the hate would have been tempered.

  • Where is the game?

When I pre-ordered digitally, it immediately downloaded a Destiny file and a Destiny update file. Combined, perhaps 250 MB or so. Clearly that is not the complete game.

And yes, my system has been in Standby Mode. And yes, my system has all the settings checked to enable it to download software updates and games in Standby Mode.

So where is the game? It was supposed to have been downloading prior to the 3am EST launch. Which is in 1 hour.

    The game is 18 GB.

  • What was the purpose of preloading the client if there is more to download when we launch the game? Not to mention, the game launches 3 hours later than midnight in EST.

Looks like digital literally got the short end of the stick in every aspect.

  • Never again Sony. If I can get the game on a disc, then from now on I will! I’ve only got 45 minutes left to wait but I can’t wait any longer, some of us have to work in the AM and what should’ve been a couple hours playtime for a lot of us turned into zero…absolutely zero. Thanks again for nothing and not letting your players know back when pre-orders started. This is just abysmal, I’m usually one that hates when gamers feel “entitled” but this time I have to say it is completely warranted. Every single person that pre-ordered the digital version of Destiny (the version that should get you in the game as soon as the publisher says its ok…which they did) should receive SOME kind of compensation for the unclear and honestly unfair way you decided to launch the game. I still can’t believe how hard this company dropped the ball on this. Biggest launch of the year and you didn’t even bother trying. Unbelievable.

  • Yea, this is pretty stupid. I could see no online play till the whole the west coast gets it but come on why did I download 7.5gigs yet have nothing I can do till 3am?

  • Yay I can finally get in and I already have more downloads. Smh

  • never again will i buy off playstation network not worth it, i had to wait until 3am to play eastern time forget that i should of jus went with the digital gamestop version instead, and still after waiting until 3am to play i still have to wait for the game to install. waste of time first and last time.

  • Anyone know if you can now download it on the ps4 if you bought it digitally on the ps3? Thanks in advance

  • Ok, so is it just me or when they say “pre order, preload and play at 12 midnight on 9/9” you expect the game to be playable at 12 mid it on 9/9??

I fell for this and now am in the game “installing destiny transferring game content” for 30 mins and won’t be able to play the actual game for at least another hour. Why was it not installed and ready to go? This is false advertising!!! Server or not the game should have been fully loaded according to their marketing statements.

  • What in the world sony. I bought the preorder digital and it predawn loaded the game sure. So midnight hits I hit play and it throws a 16GB install at me? It will take all night to install at the rate it’s going. My friends bought hard copies and are in game now. This is a major fail.

  • Lesson learned. I will NOT repeat this mistake. Disappointing Sony. Bad form.

  • Just wanted to chime in and say: This preload thing is beyond convenient! DLed the game Satuday while I was getting laid, Tuesday at 3am (after a quick patch download) I’m shooting things in Russia. A lot more companies should do this.

  • Hey if anyone wants to join a Destiny Clan , check out Final Justice http://www.bungie.net/en/Clan/Detail/117522 , I need people that actually enjoys taking the lead in raids and helping to get all the bonues due to being a clan:

    http://www.bungie.net/en/Clan/Detail/117522

  • @Staufway Not sure if you already found this out, but the license for the PS4 version is added to your account when you buy the PS3 version.

  • Well, Sony has gone one better…

… Sony customer support granted me a refund on 9/8, I bought the physical disc on 9/9 and then Sony reversed the refund on 9/10. Reason… When they checked my account on 9/10, they could see I had earned 10% on the game trophies and conclude I had been playing the game with the digital down load.

I contacted support chat again, and let them know I had been playing with a physical copy of the game and gave them proof of ownership, and they have reopened the case #.

Now I understand Sony did not have to granted me a refund, but they did. So, we’ll see what happens next. :)
