Vib Ribbon Finally Releases in North America Tomorrow

Hey everyone! If you saw our E3 Press Conference a few months back you may recall, amid all the great games and oversized hand gestures, that I gave a shout out to what I believe to be one of the most iconic games from PlayStation’s first generation: Vib Ribbon. I wanted to give Vibri some much-deserved, though belated, screen time as I felt this game really captured the crazy that PlayStation was keen to offer back then… and look to continue now with our outreach to the innovative and indie game community. I figured Vib Ribbon was a perfect example, and today I’m pleased to announce that Vib Ribbon will finally make a long overdue release in the US, Canada, Latin America and Japan this week, with Europe following next week.

First, some quick backstory on a gaming legend. When Vib Ribbon first appeared in the PSone era, I was working for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in London evaluating US and Japanese titles for possible release in Europe. One day we came upon a game developed by a team I admired very much: Masaya Matsuura and Nanaonsha. This is the crew that developed PaRappa the Rapper and veritably created the genre of rhythm-action gaming, and here they were with 2D, black and white vector graphics featuring a vibrating rabbit that turns into the Archangel Gabriel — or a slug — depending on your skills in traversing an oscillating spline that morphs to the beat of either the groundbreaking soundtrack or any CD the player happens to have around. There’s me thinking, “I’M IN!!!”

But, curiously, marketing at the time was not a believer in this quirky game. What they did not understand was that Vib Ribbon, with all its retro madness, was also part of the new game continuum and, in fact, a very radical offshoot of that, which was worthy of praise. I could not get this into the hands of European gamers without having marketing support for the release.

Luckily, we eventually got the greenlight to release Vib Ribbon in Europe. Sure, it didn’t go platinum and it didn’t make a ton of money. But it did show, again, that PlayStation is the place where everything innovative, challenging, new and somewhat off-course can come to find a fan, a market, and a home.

The game released in Japan and Europe, but in the Americas not so much as a demo. Vib Ribbon is the “one that got away” and back then, when we still had that old-school thinking around regional lockout, there was no simple way for those outside of Europe and Japan to even encounter the game. It faded, lost to the chronicles of gaming history.

Until E3. It was not my intention to rub salt in the Vib Ribbon wound, but to express my admiration for it as the genre-busting title it is and was. My mistake was that I had assumed that everyone who had been around in the original PlayStation era would have had their chance to play the game. I had forgotten that the American gamer was effectively denied the opportunity. To mention it at E3 was to delight some and to squirt lemon in the eyes of others. For this, I apologize. It was not my intent to dangle the delight of Vibri in front of those who longed for but could not have. It was to make a point about having the courage, and talent, to break the mold. To do what your heart demands. To me Vib Ribbon — well, to be honest, Nanaonsha for that matter — has always been committed to that ideal. An ideal I wish to celebrate.

I would like to give you all the chance to celebrate this iconoclastic title by bringing to all fans, worldwide, the chance to experience the original Vib Ribbon. As a result of the “outpouring of love” at the E3 name drops, our engineers have developed a way to bring Vibri to life on PS3 and PS Vita (we’re still working on a way to make it available on PS4). We look to have both of them up on PlayStation Store tomorrow at a price attractive to both Vibri virgins and the rare few amongst you who found a way to experience the Singing Spline back in the day. As an added attraction to PS3 players, that version will retain the feature that allows you to create a unique level based on the audio CD of your choice. Your music makes the game.

Sometimes games like Vib Ribbon require backing and belief that do not comport with the marketing wisdom of the day, or the forecasted financial upside. Sometimes you get behind a project because, well, you gotta believe.

Vib Ribbon is finally making its way to North America, and the major catalyst was all of you who wrote, posted, blogged, tweeted that you wished to see this game come back and wanted your voice to be heard by the suits. Well, it has. Now I look to all of you experiencing this singular game for the first time. Let me know what you think!

  • You people have really been feeding my bizarre over-romanticized PS1 nostagia lately. This is a game I yearned for back in the day. Unfortunately, when I was REALLY excited about this game, I had a CD collection. I don’t anymore. I desperately wanted Strider 2, too… Big week!

    PS: Just asked for permission to use “back in the day” from an older colleague. I’m 30 now, so it’s cool.

    Can you please now bring the Crash PSone games to North America to be playable on the Vita? They are already on PS3 and on Vita in Europe, so it’s weird that they aren’t available here. This is something that many fans have asked for even more so than Vib Ribbon.

  • Bring real PS1 Classic – Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Metal Gear Solid not this weird titles no one knows about.

    MGS is on the Vita. You just need to transfer it from your PS3. As for your precious Crash and Spyro, you’re gonna have to go and cry to Activision on that.

  • Thank you Mr. President! I won’t need to struggle with my import anymore. I’ll certainly pick up the PS3 version as I’ve plenty of CDs to play through! Now my PSone world is two titles away from completion; only ‘SAGA Frontier 2’ and ‘LUNAR 2 Eternal Blue Complete’ remain to fulfill my almost fifteen year old PSone wish-list! Thanks again!

  • Just bring Parapper the Rapper 1 and 2 to the Playstation Store, and I’ll be happy.

  • Well if the ‘suits’ are listening, I’d like to see the following:

    Vandal Hearts 1 and 2
    Jade Cocoon
    Einhander
    Die Hard Trilogy
    Diablo
    Megaman Legends 1 and 2 (I know there’s some licensing issue for some audio in the game, heck with it, take that audio OUT!)

    And how about Final Fantasy Crisis Core for the PSP

  • I imported this game back in the day and enjoyed it especially with generated levels based on your own music.
    What I’m wondering is, will the PS3 Classics version let you use mp3s from your PS3 hdd or does it has to be discs?

    Also, why won’t Sony just emulate PS1 & PS2 games on the PS4. It seems crazy that PS3 owners are getting all of this co stuff, while PS4 players are denied… It’s all Sony… make it happen! The PS4 would have now problem with emulation and it would be much better than PS Now IMO.

    Speaking of the PS4..any news on playing mp3 & DNLA on it? It’s nearly been a full year since you said your hardware division was “Looking into it”… I think we at least deserve an update, even its it’s something like “They are still looking into it”… at least that’s something.

    If the suits are listening, we need to get Suikoden II next. It’s the most-requested PS1 Classic for years now.

  • Awesome classic title. Definitely getting it for my Vita. I’d love to see more imports that never made it here. Perhaps Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 18: Dragon Force as a PS2 classic?

  • Long ago, I bought a foreign copy of this but was never able to display it on my television. I could hear the audio but was never to play the game. Broke my heart, especially after falling in love with PaRappa the Rapper and wanting anything the nanaonsha was putting out. So incredibly happy for this news!! Thank you!!

  • I’ve been waiting 14 years to play this game. I even wrote to SCEA asking for it and put it on my wish list back when this site had wish lists.

  • Shawn, you are the MAN. I went to the Playstation E3 Experience in Manhattan back in June with a friend and when footage was shown of Vib Ribbon, my friend and I were the ONLY ones in the place clapping loudly, myself shouting out “Vib Ribbon!!” haha I don’t think anyone else there may have realized what that was. I absolutely LOVED the game, imported it as a teen in Chinatown back in 2000 (man, now I feel old) and there’s certain albums now that make me envision the wireframe bunny skipping along, jumping and spinning to the beat every time I listen to them. haha

    Can’t believe that the digital release will allow us to pop in our music CD’s, that is beyond awesome. I hope this means more sequels are in the horizon (a la Mojib Ribbon and Vib Ripple).

  • It hit the store, as a normal PS1 Classic for $5.99.

    A little too much for this minimalistic game, to be honest. I expected it to be $3 or $4 .

    Oh well, not all count every buck. Still totally recommended.

  • Never heard of this Vib Ribbon game before…this is another game that I missed on PS1.Damn I want to try it out and see what is the fuss all about.

  • Will the game get released to Europe? I really would like to put my hands on the game since i didnt caught the game when i was young. Didnt got the chance to play the full game but the demo was awesome.

  • Hey Shawn, just wanted to say thanks to you and the team at Sony for bringing this game to America. Masaya Matsuura is one of my favorite developers and I always wanted to try Vib-Ribbon for myself – now I can!

    Hopefully this re-release spells good things for Vibri’s future. (And while we’re on the subject of NanaOn-Sha… can we get a PaRappa revival going too?)

  • Shawn, I’ve owned every PlayStation console since ps1, I grew up on the greats like Spyro, tomb raider, and those amazing pizza hut demos that I used to play over and over and never grow tired of it. But Crash Bandicoot was the one that never left home. I’ve got the downloads on my PlayStation today from the PlayStation store. My son and I both still find hours of entertainment but we both yearn to see what you could do with Crash today. I’m begging you Shawn, what will it take to bring crash back from activision and revamp the series? How much stock do I have to buy? How many years of PlayStation plus? What will it take to bring this part of my childhood back to share it with my child’s childhood?
