Retro City Rampage: DX Coming to PS4, PS3, PS Vita November 11th

Retro City Rampage: DX, the top-to-bottom remaster of the original game will make its PS4 debut along with the brand new PS3 and PS Vita DX versions this November 11th, complete with cross buy and cross save for all three consoles.

With a 20% off PlayStation Plus launch week discount, you’ll get all three for $7.99 ($9.99 without Plus). That’s only around $3 for each platform, and much less than the original RCR’s $14.99 launch price.

So What’s ‘DX,’ Exactly?

Those who’ve been following RCR will know just how much the game has changed since the original launch. Within weeks of the original RCR’s 2012 release, updates made vehicles faster, added more checkpoints, tutorials, hints screens, and tweaked missions. Those changes made great improvements, but still just scratched the surface. DX is a top-to-bottom remastering of just about everything.

For DX, every single mission’s been re-tuned. Vehicles. Weapons. Challenges. Visual Effects. Visual Enhancements. Checkpoints. Difficulty. Challenges. From the game’s core to sprinkles on top, such as parking garages and waypoints, it’s more than just a new coat of paint.

The care I put into the game was reciprocated when DX was released on 3DS earlier this year. I felt more love from players and reviewers than ever before, earning almost unanimous 9/10s across the board and sales to match. After the chaos and stress surrounding the original 2012 launch, things finally came together according to plan and the reception I yearned for followed.

Retooling the game for the smaller screen also really taught me a lot about its play experience. I saw how a closer more dynamic camera, brewed out of hardware limitations, actually made things feel more exciting. Selecting weapons from a grid instead of cycling through them made combat more fluid. The changes added up, and it was clear they’d be at home on HD systems too. Not just for the TV, but for the PS Vita as well – boasting not just a new zoom mode and touch functionality, but a completely new UI specifically for the handheld.

So, after the many months of working on this is secret, I’m incredibly excited be able to not only announce it, but announce it with a solid release date! No more “coming soon” this time! It’s a wrap! November 11th, 2014!

Retro City Rampage: DX includes both RCR:DX and the original RCR for the purists. Big overhauls were made to re-balance the missions, difficulty, weapons and even police AI, but if you want to stick with the original version, you can flip the switch under the Help & Options menu.

New zoom modes, a dynamic camera and a new lightweight HUD bring you closer to the action. Up close, the action packs more punch and driving feels much faster. The new 3X zoom option’s tailored specifically for the PS Vita, but also available on PS3 and PS4. Car engines were beefed up in RCR updates after the very first release two years ago, but the new dynamic camera doubles the *ooOOMPH!*. You’ll feel the difference when you compare 1X to 3X zoom and economy cars start to feel sportier. Once again though, purists can still play with the original zoom mode and original status bar style HUD.

The two graphics modes give you the option to amp the graphics up or trim them back. The updated “RETRO+” graphics mode delivers more eye candy with better shadows and more effects. The new “8-BIT” mode on the other hand, makes the game look even closer to something dug up from the ’80s.

More video filter options are also included, from color modes to a widescreen tube border. You can now also eliminate the border completely but still use the scanline or dot-matrix filters.

Missions

Every single mission has been touched up, offering a better experience overall. Certain missions have been edited to improve pacing. In Death Cam VHS, for example, you won’t need to clear so many enemies during the melee section. During the car dodge tutorial, you won’t need to jump so much. It’s little changes like this which just make for a smoother ride. They’ve also been hand tuned to work with the new 3X zoom mode, making the new PS Vita experience the best it can be.

Controls and Weapons

Controls have been tweaked. You can now jump immediately after firing weapons, making dodging enemies even easier. Weapons have been rebalanced, some boasting more damage, many with more satisfying effects. The cars and explosions blast more effects too – but purists can still stick to the classic “8-BIT” for more authentic ’80s experience.

A new weapon select screen can be toggled, pausing the game mid-action and enabling you to more easily switch weapons when your inventory’s full. It also supports touch on the PS Vita.

The PS4 version also has optional vibration support in case you want to feel the pixels thud under your pixel tires.

Arcade Challenges and Trophies

The weapon updates noticeably improve the Arcade Challenges, but many challenges have been reworked themselves as well. Second-Rate Sprees, for example, now run 30 seconds instead of 60, tightening rounds up to dethrone your friends from the leaderboards.

Two completely separate sets of leaderboards are now included, so ‘RCR:DX’ players won’t be facing off directly against players of the original ‘RCR’ mode.

With the freedom to rework things from top to bottom, ‘DX’ was able to boast a brand new trophy set too, which is now easier to 100%.

Hijacking Weapons

The city now has more to do, populated with weapon trucks. Getting the right tool for the job is now a lot more convenient. You can purchase your weapons or try your luck and attempt to hijack them. Spelunky shop keeper style, so to speak.

Losing the Cops

The wanted level system and police AI have been deepened to create more of a cat and mouse metagame. Instead of running, if you stop to fight, clearing the screen of cops will help get them off your tail. Defeating three or more cops will spawn a Cop Coin which lowers your wanted level. You can still also spray your vehicle, find coins, or change your look with a new haircut, but this makes it much more fun and convenient. It’s balanced out with slightly more challenging police. If want to make things even more challenging, you can disable the coin drops from the pause menu.

Minimap, Touch and UI

The new HUD brings a larger minimap with it, which now displays more than just missions and challenges, also weapon, spray and power-up shops, as well as enemies. You can also set it to display other locations, such as specific shops. The larger minimap makes navigating the city much easier as you’re able to see all of the roads and alleys ahead, choosing the optimal route to a destination.

You can zoom into the minimap with a single button press now, as well as set waypoints. The entire front end and UI have been redone for the PS Vita, including touch support.

Parking Garages

‘DX’ brings massive parking garages to Theftropolis. You can park one of every vehicle equipped however you like (that’s 54 parking spots!), and access them from any other garage around the city like a vehicle teleporter!

Jukebox

For chiptune fanatics, ‘DX’ now includes a 147 track music jukebox, enabling you to queue up hours of the incredible music composed by Jake ‘virt’ Kaufman, Freaky DNA and Norrin Radd.

The PlayStation Scoop!

In case you missed it, it’s 3X Cross Buy! Yup! The PS4, PS3 and PS Vita versions of DX all sold together as one for only $7.99 for PlayStation Plus members during the launch week ($9.99 without Plus).

Owners of the original Retro City Rampage for PS3 and PS Vita can transfer their save games to the new DX version via Cross-Save. The new DX version is a separate purchase, but keep in mind that with DX, you’re getting the PS4 version, a brand new Trophy set and new leaderboards. Owners of the original RCR who transfer their save game to DX will also earn a shiny elite star next to their score on the leaderboards.

Last call! The original Retro City Rampage will be delisted from the PS Store and replaced with Retro City Rampage: DX in order to avoid customer confusion. While DX includes a mode to play the original RCR, if for some reason you would prefer the pure original, grab it before it’s too late. If you already own the original RCR, you not be affected by this. You will still be able to re-download it indefinitely, at any time. The delisting will only prevent new purchases.

Hey, there are a few missions I did not like in the original. I can only think of one right now but I know there was two. My main complaint is the 3D black and white and red Car mission. Not only did I find that impossible but it also hurt my eyes. I played up to that point and stopped playing. Was anything done about that mission, because while one mission before that was hard I got though it in the end and can’t recall it, but that one literaly hurt me. Also, my one major complaint is tutorials and story. Maybe I missed a lot but it never felt like a coherent story, though since it’s a 8-16 bit game many that was the point. But some tutorials were confusing.

    The stereoscopic 3D mode for the car mission was optional. You can hit L or R to switch it between normal and 3D mode, which makes it normal colors. It’s also a lot easier now as it gives you more health, and you by default go at your max speed (and can slow down by pressing the down button) as opposed to having to hold up/accelerate to go faster. Many players didn’t realize they could press up to go faster, making the mission longer and more frustrating.

    More tutorial missions (in the form of story) were inserted into the game along with tips screens if you die, which were not in the initial October 2012 RCR.

For clarification, because of this cameo, Dtoid did *not* give the game a review score, nor upload a scores to metacritic, and provided full disclosure that some of their staff were unlockable. Further, many of the unlockable crew were no longer with Dtoid by the time the game launched.

Quite odd that this is the only entry on the blog mentioning PS+ for this month, since there are no announcements anywhere about the games that are supposed to be added to Instant Game Collection tomorrow.

Also, the game looks awesome, but I wouldn’t bother buying it when it will probably be Free on PS+ in a couple of months.

I can’t remember if I got the original RCR through PS+ or purchased it before it was included in the IGC, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. (even up to 100%!!) :)
I could see all the love you poured into it, and the game brought me back to the 8-bit days I was never allowed to have, except when at my friends’ houses. I’m definitely looking forward to the DX update!

@Brain, please. I don’t care about getting it free on PS4. I care that the PS3/Vita version I paid FULL PRICE for at launch isn’t being honored like a dead platform like the Wii is being honored.

That is nonsense. Pure nonsense. Trying to say otherwise or justify this is ridiculous.

I hope very few people bother to support you in this awful practice. How anti-consumer can you get? If you didn’t want to support the cross-buy of Vita/PS3, you should’ve sold them separately instead. Don’t support cross-buy if you’re going to rip off your consumers later. Which is exactly what you are doing.

The fact this is going to be free on other platforms is a slap in the face to people who supported you. Seems more to me you just want to milk PlayStation audiences further. Sold the best on PlayStation (at least it sold most on Vita, as of May 2013) then you put it on PS+, which gets you whatever that gets you. Now you charge us for the update everyone else gets free.

Yeah no. No justification.

Look at Terraria, YEARS of additional development has gone into it and it still routinely sees sales of $2.49 on PC. The console versions have been getting fairly regular updates as well, all at no extra cost.

I realize there are development and living costs but just tweaking a game that’s already made and asking for the full purchase again is a growing problem. It’s especially problematic towards the public perspective of the indie scene being that that was originally about new, experimental and interesting games based around fun and a passion for the medium, not just selling HD remakes.

I’m also sure the game will do fine. I’m not saying it should become free for previous owners either, I still wouldn’t play it most likely having beaten it several times already, I just find the practice distasteful. I feel exactly the same way about Soul Sacrifice D, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, etc., all of these games being given what would’ve been an expansion previously and then asking for the full price again, including from people who already own the base game. It’s quite anti-consumer.

I will continue to not purchase these titles.

Speaking of PSTV, does it make a difference when playing this game with a DualShock 3 or DS4?

For example, have the touch screen features on a Vita handheld been mapped to the DualShock 4’s touch pad? (If that is possible with the current DS4 support available to the device.)

    Both controllers should play about the same (only tried a DualShock 3 specifically on PS TV). The touch features weren’t specifically added to the touch pad on the DS4, but without a full touch screen it’s easier to just use the buttons. The weapon select screen for example, can be fully used with the D-Pad or left stick, as can zooming and scrolling the interactive map.

    Cheers! After loading your game on the original version, go to the Pause Menu then Cross-Save and Save Game To Cloud, then you can download it from the new version. (there was a bug in the original version where some stats might be lost if you Save Game To Cloud directly from the Main Menu without first loading a game, so that’s why I say to load a game first)

This is a one man studio and you can tell he really has put a lot of work into this project and is really dedicated to it and it shows if you played the original. With this new release he actually listened to feedback and improved on things that were lacking from the original game (the original game was great nontheless). I will be glad to pay the $7.99 for this considering all the work he has put into this game. I’m amazed that a one man operation has been able to release it on so many platforms.

About the lack of discount it has something to do with Sony not allowing it. Guacamelee had the same issue.

Oh, okay. I was thinking more that there’d be a button on the new game’s LiveArea screen, asking to port saved files over. (To be honest, I hadn’t even registered there being a save to the cloud feature… Ahem.) But this option seems to work well enough, or at least the upload portion has. Love it when developers release a labor of love, only to obsess over it all over again, tinker it inside out and release it anew. That’s love! Awesome work.

The lack of an “upgrade” price for existing users has to do with Sony’s policies, which are incredibly befuddling. Minecraft allows an upgrade price to existing PS3/Vita users, Journey offered an upgrade price to early purchasers of Flower, etc. They can pull this particular rabbit out of their hats when they want to, but for some reason they choose to complicate things and make lives of indie developers like FarSight and Drinkbox Studios a nightmare by tying their hands from a PR perspective.

Brian keep up the good work. Don’t let the few cry babies discourage you, as the majority here seem to love the game and are fine with this. It’s just there is an “entitled – spoiled” generation of kids who need to wine or expect everything for free. Hell I remember having to pay $50 for NES/TG-16 games back in the 80s… some only lasted a few hours… and I loved every minute of it! The value we get out of games today is amazing, and it’s why my backlog is 200+ titles long. Yet people will still complain. It’s inevitable.

Anyway keep up the good work. Will be playing this on my vita/Ps4, and will buy my son a copy on his vita.

Mr. Provinciano, you have my 7.99. And it’s incredible that you made this game all by yourself (and for all platforms). It’s a tour de force in nostalgia. I love it.
