Yakuza 5 Announced at PlayStation Experience

Today is a very special and exciting day for all of us at SEGA. Partnering with our friends at Sony Computer Entertainment America, we just revealed our plan to bring Yakuza 5 to the U.S. and Europe at PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas. We also announced that Yakuza 4 and Yakuza: Dead Souls are available on PlayStation Network starting today.

We’ve received so many requests from our fans to bring Yakuza 5 to the U.S. and Europe. Yakuza 5 also made the top of the list of Sony’s #BuidingTheList campaign led by Gio Corsi at Sony Computer Entertainment and we were moved by all the support given to Yakuza 5 by the PlayStation community.

Yakuza 5 continues the epic story of Kazuma Kiryu alongside four other protagonists, following their struggles and conflicts in the seedy underbelly of Japan’s Yakuza underworld. Featuring a new graphics engine versus its predecessor, Yakuza 5 takes players to five major Japanese cities to venture through a life of crime and power.

Yakuza 5 features more mini-games than previous titles, a modified battle system as well as enhanced customizations and interactions in the signature hostess bars of the series. In addition to these features, Yakuza 5 also introduces “Another Drama” which is a series of side stories that focus on each protagonist in-depth and are separate from the main story of the game.

Allow me to also share messages from Toshihiro Nagoshi, the Executive Director of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and the General Producer of the Yakuza series and Masayoshi Yokoyama, the Producer of Yakuza 5.

Yakuza 5 Announced at PlayStation Experience

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Executive Director and General Producer)

“After receiving so many requests from fans of the series, we have decided to bring Yakuza 5 to the US and Europe. This title was enjoyed by over one million gamers in Japan. I’m looking forward to seeing how Yakuza 5 will be received by the gamers in the U.S. and Europe. ”

Masayoshi Yokoyama (Producer)

“Yakuza 5 is the largest and most definitive version of the Yakuza series. The game is filled with depictions of the Japanese way of life, culture, trends, social issues and dreams. You will play as 5 different main characters with a range of different ages, genders and professions and experience their challenges through a variety of character focused, in-depth stories. I hope you can immerse yourself in our rendition of modern time Japan. ”

Yakuza 5 will be available exclusive to PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network in 2015. Please stay tuned for more information on Yakuza 5!

  • Finally thanks for bringing this title. Could you please bring the Yakuza 1&2 HD as well so we can complete the collection on PS3 ^^

  • I’m so happy they’re finally localizing Yakuza 5! Day one purchase for sure!

  • @46 Hitokiri_03

Because the main focus on Yakuza is beating up dudes; the story guides you through the game so you can keep fighting.
The Shenmue vibe only makes the game more rich and complete, and it’s necessary for the narrative.
In Tales of you have the typical RPG stuff, leveling up your party, crafting stuff, finding stuff, fighting lots of stuff to keep leveling and getting items to craft stuff, you have a s***load of weapons and armor and accessories to choose, etc. The difference that Tales games made was doing fights so fast that you don’t realize you’re still applying the typical RPG combat. Also, you can keep grinding like any other RPG.
And then you have Akiba’s Trip, where you level up, can craft items, you have a s***load of weapons and armor and accessories to choose from, you level up your weapons and “armor” (clothes), you can keep grinding, you have random encounter, etc. You have your RPG elements, but put in fighting system where you have to time your guards and attacks, you know, like in a good brawling game, but obviously it’s not as good as Yakuza’s since it’s not its main focus. And it has multiple endings.

  • @#5 Yes, please do this! Either bring over the HD remakes, or just release the PS2 Classics versions of the first two games. Either way will do!, but preferably the former. :)

  • This is my first comment, and I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you so much, Sony and Sega, for making this happen. I just bought Yakuza 4 and Yakuza Dead Souls again on PSN just to show my continued, undying support for this series. I’m on my third semester of Japanese because I was about to lose hope…

While a physical release would be terrific, I’m very thankful we’re getting it at all.

    Thank you.

  • Dang its digital only… :/

Oh well beggars can’t be choosers. Now bring on Yakuza 0!

  • Thanks for bringing this over.

    How about physical copy.

I have physical copys of yakuza 1-4 would love to add 5 to my collection.

    how about yakuza 1 + 2 hd

and Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin! for ps4

  • Thank you so much, Sony!

  • What a great start to this weekend’s PSX. So many great announcements. Tigeeeer Uppercuuuut!!

  • Good job! Thanks for bringing this over. This is day 1 purchase!

  • Please bring over Yakuza1 and Yakuza2 HD collection too!

  • Thank you so much for this. Cheers to Gio Corsi and Sega ;)

  • You just make fans verya happy c´: THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH >< <3 we love you sega c:

  • Since i already bought the Japanese version i am not buying this.

  • First off Very exciting, and I also support the PS4 Idea. And please bring over Zero. Who doesn’t love the 80’s a weird Yakuza filled 80’s.

  • Dont gut content from this. Y2 was one of the greatest PS2 games made, and most of that was due to stuff that went missing from Y3.

I’ve got a sick feeling that they’re gonna say “Americans will buy for the punching, not Haruka’s dance battle stuff”. I’m fine with no OP song or AnswerXA in Y5 (that was all that got cut from Y4?), but anything more and it feels like the spirit/soul of the game is missing like with Yakuza 3. Y3 was still fun, but it had a sad, empty vibe since many locations were useless/locked.

I realise money & ISPs might not be top quality all across North America (and I’ll always like seeing my games on my shelf), but PSN has had some CRAZY discounts over the last year. Heck, the other night, I got a digital Drakengard 3 for $16! when the price on that everywhere else has been about $25 or $30. I get that some players might have obstacles with PSN games, but for the people whining “oh, I’m just going to ignore this since it’s digital”, enjoy your paper weight – I’m going to have fun FINALLY getting a chance to see Haruka put on a pretty pink outfit and dance herself to stardom~

    – seriously, dont cut anything please! They’d been building up to it since Y2!

  • This was the big announcement for me at the show. Don’t know what else to say but thank you! I love the series and will continue to buy them. Now please consider bringing the PS4 versions to the west!

  • Thank you Sega!

To everyone *****ing about it being a digital only release. It’s cheaper to localize it this way and can be done a little quicker too from my understanding, which means if it sells well, we’ll get the other titles brought over! It’s not like you CAN’T play it…..

  • First of all a big THANK YOU to Gio and Adam who no doubt worked on getting us Yakuza 5, i’m sure sega played a part in it too but if it wasn’t for you guys at Sony i doubt they would have localized it on there own. Now the question that has already been raised by others is why is it only a digital release? Can you not do a timed/limited physical release say around 10000 copies atleast that would give the fans a chance to own a copy. I will definitely support the digital release day 1 and hope sony and sega can work together on giving us Yakuza 1&2 HD,Ishin and Yakuza 0 soon. Thanks again!

  • I’m in so much disbelief. I wanted this so much and felt like it was never going to happen which makes this feel so surreal. I feel like I’m dreaming. It’s really happening. Thank you SEGA and thank you very much, PlayStation. Consider this pre-ordered!

  • @53 Viewtiful_Gene

Thanks for your explanation, but I still think that Yakuza series is an Action RPG more than anything else, but again thanks for explaining your opinion.

    @COREMINE

I think that the chances of Y0 come to the west are pretty high now that Sony is helping to bring Y5 over.

  • Sad this is not coming to PS4.

  • Thank you sony and SEGA! Please consider a physical release also.

  • Thank you Sony + Sega! I don’t know what it is with Sega these days, but between Nintendo bringing Bayonetta 2 out and now Sony bringing Yakuza 5 west, I guess it’s okay if 1st parties help nab the games we want from them. I will continue to hope for Phantasy Star Online 2 and perhaps Shining Resonance if it reviews well. Man, if the Sony 3rd Party Production Program pulls off a PS4 console version of Phantasy Star Online 2, and brings it West? I will lose my mind! But make no mistake; Yakuza 5 is a huge one, I appreciate it and I’m pre-ordering as soon as Amazon sets up a page to do so! THANK. YOU!

  • Just when I have had given up. Thank you so much for making this happen!!!

  • “Yakuza 5 will be available exclusive to PlayStation 3 via PlayStation Network in 2015. ”

Yea. That probably just killed it for a lot of people.
    Seriously SCEA.

Get your act together and bring us:

Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Collection (with Japanese voices) on disc.
Yazkuza 3, 4, 5, etc. on disc (with Japanese voices)

Digital only means you guys have little confidence that it’d sell well. You should really be putting games these days on disc and then later digitally.

  • Yes! So glad Yakuza DS and 4 are on PSN now. I have physical copies but I’m definitely going to pick up the digital ones soon. Here’s hoping Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 1+2 HD or PS2 classics eventually make it onto PSN as well!

  • Only digital media? Sorry but, i am very dissapointed, i want purchase this game in physical media, not digital, this is ridiculous!

  • Japan have physical media, in here, only digital, my vibe down right now!

  • phyiscal vers please.

many of us want it physical.

    petitions are starting.

if at all possible, hows about that yakuza 5 ps3 bundle japan got too?

  • “Japan have physical media, in here, only digital, my vibe down right now!”

In Japan the game sells around 500k here in the West around 50k this is why is only digital.

  • Man, I got harassed on PSN by a level 1 account yesterday for what I said on my @6 post. Got called a Japanese Otaku (which isn’t bad but I’m not a Japanese person or an Otaku) but the rest of it was more along the line of “go die” and plenty of swears. So just a reminder to everyone here, even when you try to say something nice about a game and the Japanese game industry, there’s people out there that will hunt you down, issue you death threats for not agreeing with them, and waste their time and your time for the sake of making them feel big. Because this is the internet.

That said, I like that some of you are genuinely happy with the announcement :) I hope you enjoy Yakuza 5 when it comes out and I’ll try to keep positive even when something like this has happened to me because of this site. Not trying to get sympathy here, just reminding people these things happen.

  • “which isn’t bad but I’m not a Japanese person or an Otaku”

    Your avatar says otherwise :P.

  • I just have an appreciation for the Japanese culture. I picked this avatar mostly because I liked the character in Mugen Souls from what I seen of her. But I suppose if you can read a book by its cover, then I believe you to be a guy that’s either taking an eye test or trying to get something out of your eye and that you like to wear ties Hitokiri_03.

As for the otaku part, I’m nowhere near that level :P

Btw, I like how this turned into a game of “comment on the avatar of the guy above you” like a normal forum haha. Thanks for the cheer up :)

  • This is an excellent and I’m really very happy to can play at Yakuza 5 in english!
Please consider also the physical release (I’d like have a physical game so I will add in my collection near yakuza 3/4/dead souls)
and also a massive marketing campaign because this is a great game!

  • Love when you ruin a perfect announcement with a “Digital Only” smackdown at the end. Unless this game is <=$10 then it's Physical or BUST!

  • /\

    Funny

I don’t see any Yakuza game in your trophy list, so I guess you don’t support physical copies too ;)

  • I can’t stop smiling. I’m so happy it’s actually happening.

  • I almost fell off of my chair when they announced the game. It was one of my happiest gaming related moments ever. Now I know how it would feel, when they finally announce shenmue 3.
Anyway, to all the people whining about it being digital only:
Please shut up already, it’s a miracle we are getting the game and you should be thankfull you get to play it. If you want a physical copy that much just import the japanese version AND buy digital on PSN. Please don’t be a jerk and support the game, so we get a chance to play Zero as well.

  • Finally thank you so much sony and sega i was waiting for it to come to psn so i can buy it i love yakuza games I hope that we get the new yakuza games on psn too

  • Finally thank you so much sony and sega i was waiting for it to come to psn so i can buy it i love yakuza games I hope that we can get the new yakuza games on psn too

  • Am I reading this right?! Best gaming news I’ve heard in a while!

I too would want a physical copy (for various reasons) and would not pay the $60 for a digital only. If you’re going strictly digital, adjust the price accordingly and pass on your savings to the consumer. $40 for a new digital only release seems like a good MSRP. Until then, it’s a one-way benefit to you the publisher and developer only and I can’t support that practice.

  • FINALLY. Thank you SONY for stepping in and giving us Yakuza 5. I can’t wait to finally play this!

  • Thank you SEGA and PlayStation (Gio Corsi and Third Party Production team) for listening to Yakuza fans!
    Now ‪#‎SaveShenmue‬ in HD! ‪#‎BuildingTheList‬ :)
