Tower of Guns Launching on PS4, PS3 in 2015

Hi! This is Jakub from Grip Games, and I have some very exciting news to share. Tower of Guns is coming to PS4 and PS3 in 2015, and we’re bringing you the first trailer.

Tower of Guns is an old-school, roguelike, first-person shooter with randomized levels and enemies. It’s a pure FPS experience for the players who just want to get a big gun, shoot stuff, battle gigantic bosses, upgrade their abilities, and modify their gear. No stupid NPCs to get in the way, no ridiculous story to explain what you are doing there. You’re the good one, they are the bad ones. If you get to the end, you win.

But that’s a BIG “if.” The brutal difficulty and randomized levels make sure that you’ll need to earn your right to see the top of the Tower of Guns. Each death sends you back to the first floor, but stronger and better equipped. The levels and enemies are randomly generated for each run. This means that you’ll be playing a different game every time you restart.

There are over 20 weapons and countless modifications and upgrades to get. There are items to collect and perks to help you on your way. And you’ll need help, because Tower of Guns is a bullet-hell style game in the first-person view. The enemies are merciless and you’ll need to be constantly on the move, dodging bullets. Forget cover mechanics or stealth missions — instead, it’s time to re-learn strafing and double-jumping and enter each room with guns blazing. And just when you think you’re out of the worst, you’ll meet one of the game’s many huge bosses, like the Doomball or the Egg Scrambler. You will die, and you will die a lot.

If that’s still not enough for you, Tower of Guns has countless secret rooms to find and rare items to get. There are even secret game modes and stages to unlock!

We’re bringing Tower of Guns to PS4 and PS3 in 2015, and we have a plenty of content ready to show you before launch.

  • No Vita?

  • @1 Why do you people ask for vita ports all the time. Half of the games you ask for are too demanding to run on the vita. It’s really annoying.

  • Anything that plays remotely like Quake is OK in my book. Looking forward to seeing more!

  • I own a Vita and even I know what to expect and not expect to see on my Vita.

What you people including myself like to see is 1st party exclusive game’s that use the full hardware to it’s advantage. Porting a game is pointless and meaningless so stop asking to port everything because I sent you throw a portal with no return.

  • Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes !!!! oh man this is great news ! I always thought Tower Of Guns would be great on the PS4 .. even better to release on PS3 cause it’s what i have for now. Thanks For The Great News Jakub Mikyska !

Out of Curiosity. will this be a Cross Buy Title ?

  • I have asked for Vita versions but +macy113 is right. I have seen some real dumpy games people have asked for. I think Vita owners should be more realistic and picky. Maybe game makers would actually consider it more.

  • @2 You have no right to say it,peolpe are free to request or suggest it,if you are upset ,you better don’t mention that,

Anyway as a Vita (only) owner,I would love to see Tower of Guns on Vita,I love only handheld consoles and it’s so cool to have more good games on your library.

Anyway we will wait for Vita version.i don’t care about the price I would to buy it with any price even 100 USD only on Vita.

  • @ JamesSoprano Yes, Cross Buy :) PS3 and PS4

  • Any game we get on Vita is good. Please make a Vita port.

  • Yeah i change my mind. People should be able to ask for what they want. Who am i to judge a game. If enough Vita owners agree that is more games for us.

  • I’d buy this for Vita.

  • The game looks awesome. if it’s not already in the game, may I recommend a Halo-style Bumpe Jumper controller layout.

  • Looks like a cool cross between Quake 2 and Serious Sam. I don’t mind hard games, but I find games that are simply punishing where no strategy “puzzle” solving will help to be super frustrating. With randomized levels, how do you make sure to avoid that? It works in platform-genre games for specific reasons, and I’m curious about how you approached it.

Thank you so much for providing cross-buy!

Can you talk about differences in the PS4 version? 1080p @ 60fps? stereo 3D support? 24-bit FLAC audio assets?

    • It is not frustrating as long as you like FPS games. It is skill based. If you die, you typically know what you did wrong and will avoid that next time. The levels are made of pre-made parts randomly placed after each other and the enemies, objects, etc are also randomly spawned. So there is never some frustrating level design just because of the randomness. But it is still fresh every time.

Yes, PS4 is 1080p @ 60fps and also the textures are much higher resolution. With stylized graphics, like Tower of Guns has, that is very important.
Stereo 3D is not supported. I am not sure about the audio.

  • @1, @2, etc:

On the Vita front, I’d personally love to play this on my Vita as well. From a tech perspective, if a game can “fit” on the PS3, if can probably “fit” on the Vita (and vice versa). The Vita approximates the basic CPU power of the PS3, and has pretty fantastic memory bandwidth. Because the Vita native resolution is smaller, and the quad-core GPU is focused on fill-rate (instead of compute/shaders), this title might well be easily portable to Vita. (Especially if it’s using off-the-self tech like Phyre, Unreal, etc.) The real problem with portability to Vita (and any PowerVR-based GPU) is the tile-based rendering — it can take a lot of work to optimize a rasterization/rendering engine for tiles, if it hasn’t been already.

Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath on Vita is a great example of a team porting a “classic” renderer to tile-based GPU with fantastic results. (Borderlands 2 on Vita… not so much.) Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light on iOS is another good example of a fantastic console port to mobile (why isn’t it on Vita yet??) (BioShock on iOS… not so much.)

    • Vita is a great machine, but as you wrote yourself, Unreal Engine games do not run so well there. Also, Tower of Guns has literally hundreds of objects (projectiles) on screen and the CPU cannot handle that. And reducing the number of bullets would affect gameplay.

We tried Vita, but it not meant to be. Even PS3 was hard…

  • graphics are,.. lacking.

..but it looks really fun. like really fun. i’ll probably pick this up.

  • First, Thank You for bringing your game to Playstation.
It looks awesome. Very unique to have an FPS Roguelike. You got me hyped for it and I’ll be happy to play when it comes out. Keep up the great work :)

  • @7 this is coming from someone who doesn’t own a PS4 or a PS3. Alright. Before you people ask for Vita ports. How about you look what engine the game runs on. then Look at how Borderlands 2 turned out, 10fps Lowest Settings. Games like Skytorn? Ok. But seriously. Killing Floor 2 and the Forest are also being port begged. Because it’d run just fine right!? Vita isn’t some god platform that can run every single game at 60fps 1080p. Think about that before you port beg for games that cant even run on the vita

  • this game looks pretty cool , and if VITA can run killzone, then the vita can DEFINITELY run this..just sayin, i don’t even have a vita but this game would be awesome on it.

  • Thank you all for the kind comments.

Tower of Guns is really unique game. It looks like it came from the history but that is the point – the pure shooter experience for the new age and with unique gameplay plus the art direction you can find only in Borderlands.

The PSVITA question is let´s say complicated and there are no plans for the near 2015.
The Cross Buy PS3 and PS4 versions are awesome with really vivid colours and timeless fun.. trust me.

  • @Kid_Loser Thank you!
    It is FPS RogueliTe :)

  • Thank you for still supporting PS3.
Many developers think PS3 is not worth it, but almost 90 mil of us say we are.

And I dont want to hear anyone saying crap about Unreal engine again.
If game is optimized properly it can look and run great, and this game looks great.
Im getting it 100%. Crossbuy makes it even better, so one day I can enjoy it on ps4.

Nothing beats old school, simple is better. :)

Thanks again and I hope you release game as soon as possible, cant wait.

  • Can’t wait to try this on PS4. Please try to get this onto vita. Maybe challenging, but I guaranty you its alot of fun to do and nothing beats the feeling you get once you get something working on it that you thought would be outside of your skill or even impossilbe to do.

  • Sorry but IMO, anything that looks like it was built to run on a PS2 or PSone, shouldn’t have any problems running on a Vita… All these “old school” style games, should run just fine.

  • @2: 1. Then don’t read it, simple.
    2. The Vita may not be as powerful as home consoles but it’s not a weak handheld.

To devs: Even if there are no plans in 2015, consider the years after that. There are a lot of Vita comments so there is a demand.

  • Tower of Guns will be Cross Buy so when the PSVITA version will be out then it´s yours too.

We prefer Cross Buy for all of our games as default. Just Enjoy.

  • LoL. So many people talking about PSVITA +Jakub Mikyska confused it with PS3 or PS4 =)

  • Was hoping it’d be on Vita when I saw the trailer on my PS4 (youtube app, the title was cut off at the second platform “PS”.. :P)

The system could use some more FPS. At least you’ve answered questions about it here. If it was possible, I’d like it there. If not, then I can’t imagine playing it on PS3 or PS4. Even being different, I have my fill of FPS on the PS3 and PS4.

  • Thanks for commenting on the Vita statement in such detail!

I didn’t mean to imply that Unreal engine (specifically, Unreal 3) won’t work on the Vita — plenty of Unreal 3 engine games are on the Vita and look/play great — just not FPSes ;)

I’m curious what about your game makes the PS3 possible, but the Vita so difficult. Is it because you’re leveraging a lot of the PS3 SPUs? is it the Vita’s limited VRAM size? CPU L1/L2 cache size/misses? limited vectorization instructions? Some devs I’ve talked to have lamented the split memory between the CPU and GPU, and that one of those memory pools is much slower — versus other mobile platforms with a single pool of memory.

Really interested to hear the challenges, and I suspect it will help people appreciate that for all the Vita’s strengths, it does have some limitations :)

  • The Vita IS powerful enough to run this game…via Remote Play.

Seriously, stop badgering every developer that announces a new game on PS4/PS3 to make a Vita version. Game developlment is both expensive and difficult, and devs are going to decide which platforms they support based on what they can financially afford to develop for. A handful of people on this thread begging for a Vita port with no concept of how much work and money that takes are not going to sway them. You talk as if the developer hasn’t even considered bringing the game to Vita, even though it’s clear from the replies that they already did. If you’re really serious about shaming devs into shoehorning their games into the Vita (which IS NOT as powerful as a PS3, not even close), then sign a petition with a few thousand friends and send that to the developer as a show of genuine interest or “demand”.

  • I once owned a Vita (I now have a PlayStation TV instead) and I too want to see the platform succeed, but I’d rather focus my energies on encouraging devs to bring games to Vita that are more realistically attainable on the platform. For instance, why isn’t there a version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within on Vita when the game is on mobile? Why aren’t we seeing more companion apps on Vita that we see on mobile? Where are the more original games made for Vita? Anyway, I’m taking away fun the point of this thread, and so are all these Vita complaints. I’m looking forward to seeing more of this PS4/PS3/”Vita remote play” title.

  • I’ve seen this game covered on PC sites over the past year, and it’s always looked like a blast. Since I don’t play PC games much, despite having a pretty great rig (it’s way more for work than fun; animation keeps me busy), I just don’t go through games on PC very fast at all and a lot of stuff slips through the cracks. As far as indie FPS’ go, I feel like I’m way behind – I wanna get this, I wanna get Wrack, I wanna get Time Rifters… heck, it’s a miracle I got Receiver this year. I’m glad this is coming to Playstation then; i play WAY more console games than I do PC titles, and this seems like something I will love!

I’m super old school. I’m even helping out on an indie FPS that’s inspired by retro titles like Quake & Unreal myself – and by “helping out”, I mean “was roped into doing animations for, since the project lead is a good friend of mine”. I deeply love any shooter than can capture ANY of that feeling, which is why this has been on my radar :)

    Thanks for bringing it over!

  • HELL YES!!!!!!!! I’ve been dying to play this, but my 2005 laptop cant run anything anymore. FINALLY!!!!!!!

  • I don’t know how to feel about this. There is a definite line between rewarding challenge and frustration. Rogue Legacy was both, punishing you with death until you finally get enough upgrades to be able to handle everything with relative ease. What made it tolerable was how short the game was. You didn’t feel like you were really being set back too far.
Based on the trailer, Tower of Guns looks too punishing. Will beginning areas be easier and the difficulty scale up as I move forward? Is the game possible for anyone to eventually conquer or will it always be horribly cruel like Spelunky, where only a few people who play the game will ever get through it?
