Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee HD Leaps to PS Vita Today

Hey PlayStation fans. We’re excited today to announce that later today we’ll be releasing Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee HD onto PS Vita via PlayStation Store.

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD

For those that don’t know the game, Abe is back after starring in the first two Oddworld games (and this year’s Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty on PlayStation 4), but now he’s playing second fiddle to a new hero called Munch. Munch is a Gabbit, and the last of his kind. As their guardian angel, it’s your destiny to bring his species back from the brink of extinction.

Munch and Abe’s destination is Vykkers Labs, a floating pharmaceutical station running all sorts of grizzly experiments on Oddworld’s cutest critters in the name of a better fabric softener. It’s here they’ll find not only stockpiled Mudokon eggs on sale to factory owners as cheap labor, but also the last can of Gabbiar, the disgusting delicacy that is raw Gabbit eggs.

On their way they’ll infiltrate factories and bankrupt the CEOs by donating to a corrupt charity that’s funding their latest Oddysee.

Munch’s Oddysee carries many similar themes and mechanics to Abe’s Oddysee, including the planned extinction of a species, rescuing slaves and test subjects, and the ability to take control of your enemies, but expands massively with the option to switch characters at any time, pick up and throw objects, swim in water, and use new GameSpeak to incite slave rebellions, native uprisings and lab rat revolutions.

It was originally the company’s first venture into 3D games for Oddworld back in 2001, but has been re-crafted for Vita using the same enhanced graphics and tightened controls as the PlayStation 3 version of a couple of years back. We think it’s a great fit for the handheld, and are delighted to finally offer it.

Please note that the game is only available in English.

Oddworld fans waiting patiently for even more Abe should rest assured that we’re still working hard on the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 versions of Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, too – we hope to have more details on those versions soon.

  • So, when will we hear anything about the SALES? The last two for PS4 have been absolute trash tbh. How about adding games for sale the people actually want.. Instead of crap games that are on sale every other week on the PSN store?

  • It is compatible with Playstation TV?

    • The game plays with a controller exactly as the PlayStation 3 version does, so you should be able to play perfectly through PlayStation TV.

  • Don’t you love how every poster doesn’t read the writer of the topic, and often assumes that they’re conversing with Sony reps? Oh well.

Happy to have it! I’ve been waiting a long, long time for this guys, I really hope it’s a port you’re proud of, one that makes the wait worth it, you’ve promised this all year :p

Wish you had mentioned price, but I’m too broke to buy it now anyway since I doubt it’s cross buy. Ah well, looking forward to it when I can get it. Thanks for getting it out there in time for the Holidays :D

    We love you Oddworld Inhabitants!

  • Cross buy?

    • Sorry, that’s a no on Cross-Buy. Munch’s Oddysee HD for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita are separate purchases.

  • I wanted to ask about a preview for the sales too but this is article about oddworld. Sony has agreements with brick and mortar stores and other types of retailers. I’m sure there are plenty of agreements about price drops on the store. Brand new releases aren’t going to get major deals. We do need more deals on aaa games. I bought my ps4 for uncharted and other aaa games, not for the (generally) garbage indie titles psplus fists on us. Can we please have a post or twitter post showing this week’s deals sometime early today please? Thank you.

  • Will I have to buy the game again for vita if I already own the PS3 version?

  • Nice! Finally some vita love with a AAA title.

  • Sorry, but this game sucks, it is all that the Abe world’s was not, i´m more sad than happy of viewing this into Vita.

  • I’ve never played an ODD world game but I can’t some free through PS Plus. I should try it sometime. Good luck regardless!

  • Yay Vita love. Keep putting new content on my shiny OLED friend cause I love throwing money at it! Now just need to put out a
128gb memory card and it will be all good!

  • Holiday Deals Week 3?
    Maybe and discount hun!

  • Haha, foists not fists although that is funny.b

  • That’s it, I’m getting this game as soon as it’s out. Wil, please let the Dev team know we could also get Oddworld’s PSVita theme and Avatars, I’d buy them in a heartbeat!

[Off-topic] Guys, please just STOP asking dumb questions such as “cross-buy?”
Do you even know what cross-buy means, from a Developer’s Perspective? That he’s got to port a game to an other platform and charge you nothing for it. The guy’s restless hours debugging the game code so that you can play and then you come up with this “cross-buy” BS. If you don’t have the money for it, then don’t buy it!

Thank you Wil, this post just made my week!
Also, I’m looking forward to playing NaT, but I’ll wait. No need to rush guys, give New ‘n’ Tasty (on the VITA) the time it needs in order to amaze us once again.

    • Themes and avatars, not a bad idea! I can’t promise anything, but I can certainly add them to my list of fun projects for a less hectic future time. :)

  • #13 – Why in the world is “cross-buy” a dumb question? It’s a current feature many games on Playstation platforms have, not just something new people are asking for. I would also like to know if this game is cross-buy or not.

  • Over at the EU blog Will has replied with a couple of comments. It isn’t cross buy with the PS3 version and does support the PlayStation TV.

  • Is it ps tv compatible?

  • Good sony thx, but whe need even MORE GAMES! DO IT! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

  • @#4 , the store just updated and i can confirm it’s not cross buy

  • Wished it was Cross Buy.Will wait for significant sale to double dip.

Have the PS3 Version….but complete many more games on the Vita because of travelling and easy night gaming without disrupting roommates.

Thankfully haven’t bought New and Tasty for PS3 or PS4…. so will wait for the Vita version.

Caddiacrus loves this series….looking forward to playing them all.

  • This news made my day today. This is the title I was expecting the most during the year. No kidding. I purchased Abe’s Oddysee, Abe’s Exodus and Stranger’s Wrath all of them for the Vita. There was an empty sloth that required to be filled with the last game of the Oddworld collection.

Sony, thanks for FINALLY releasing this game. It’s been a long and tortuous wait, but I am seeing the end of the tunnel now.

Oddworld Inhabitants, thanks ****ing much. I hope one day you will release a full retail Oddworld Collection for PS3 or PS4.

  • @1 a lot of people want a lot of those games.

@13 Cross-buy isn’t a dumb question. Yeah it takes money to port but there is precedent for add ons you can buy that give you the other versions at a discount like Minecraft did. For $5 you got the PS4 upgrade, and you got the Vita version at no charge. For Rainbow Moon they dropped the price by half if you bought the Cross-buy upgrade.

There’s nothing wrong with people preferring games that they buy once, and don’t ever have to feel like they regret the version they bought. Some people’s PS3s will go out, and they might wish they got the Vita version because they have a Vita t.v., or maybe they want to use their own music while playing it, and so they wish they had bought the PS4 version.

There’s nothing wrong with being a fan of Cross-Buy, Cross-Play, Cross-Save. There’s few things more satisfying than buying a game a while ago, and then another version comes out and you get it at no additional charge. It makes you feel like the developer cares about their customers.

  • Bought this today and it’s lovely! You guys have really nailed re-creating these awesome games from original Xbox for modern platforms. I wish Sega would do this for their Xbox titles, especially Panzer Dragoon Orta.

I’m curious if more optimizations had to be made to the underlying engine, and if any of those optimizations will be folded back into Stranger’s Wrath on Vita.

    • Fantastic to know you’re enjoying it! A lot of optimization went into both Munch’s Oddysee HD and Stranger’s Wrath HD for PS Vita, but they use different engines, so there’s not really anything that can be reused between them.

  • Yes! I’ve been waiting to play this game on vita, love the Oddworld games.
