Hyperdevotion Noire Battle System Detailed

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen! My name is David, here for Idea Factory International, and I’m happy to give you a glimpse of the battle system for the upcoming strategy RPG Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart, which is launching early 2015 exclusively on PS Vita. This spinoff of the Hyperdimension Neptunia world introduces a new way for everyone’s favorite Goddesses to fight, and they’ve brought a whole army of friends to help them!

Taking place in the new world of Gamarket, you’ll see that the Goddesses get the chibi treatment, but just because they’re smaller doesn’t mean they can’t do huge amounts of damage! Because if there’s one thing these characters do better than breaking the fourth wall, it’s battle. And for the first time ever in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, your battleground is a 3D strategy grid.

Your Goddesses will bring their crazy skills to the world of strategy, and lay the smackdown in a whole new way, but you can’t just run up to your enemy and hit ’em or else you’d be taking the “strategy” out of “strategy RPG”. No, there’s some new things you’ve got to think about with this game’s battle system.

First, we’ll start with the characters. With a new world comes new characters, and while Noire and friends are based on game systems, these new folks are rooted in a variety of favorite game series. There’s Lid, an eyepatch-wearing stealth freak who gets around in boxes; Lee-Fi, a fighter with a certain button sequence on her bangles; and Vio, a pistol-wielding lady with a zombie puppet and umbrella.

There are plenty more playable characters — a total of 26, to be exact — each equipped with their own special skill sets and weapons, because you’ve got to amass a small army if you want to be able to survive on the battle grid. With so many choices, it’s only fair that you should be able to swap characters mid-battle so everyone gets a taste of (Neptunia?) victory!

There’s an added bonus to giving all your characters a taste of battle — by having characters perform special skills next to allies, you’ll be able to bump up their Lily Rank. Increasing Lily Ranks means a higher Lily Boost, so that the next time that character performs a special skill with their allies by their side, their friends will lend an encouraging peck on the cheek, increasing the skill’s effect and dramatically lowering the skill cost.

Performing special skills with the Lily Boost will also build up Lily Points, which will activate ultra-special moves and Goddess transformations. So mix and match your party and share the love — it’ll keep your party in tip-top shape!

Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart

You’ll really need to make sure your party is ready for battle, because in this world, enemies aren’t the only ones out to get you — the battlefield itself is a place rife with danger! Fire pits, floating logs, electric slides (you’ll know it when you see it)… All of these things and more are scattered throughout your battle maps like flower petals from a particularly sadistic flower girl.

You’ll have to plan out your line of movement a few steps ahead in order to avoid falling prey to such unforgiving terrain. One misstep and you’re charred moe in a pit. Not only that, but enemies can inflict all kinds of strange status effects on your party — you can be pixelated, zombie-fied, or even turned into a block of tofu! Each effect has its own benefit and cost, so maybe that bane is really a boon?

So the world of Gamarket might look sweet and cuddly, but it’s really a non-stop fight for your life wrapped up in cuteness. Lucky for you, you’ve got a mini army of game parody characters fighting on your side to get through such treacherous terrain and sneaky status ailments — and if you play your cards right, they’ll be able to boost up your attacks with an encouraging kiss! We all need a little love on the battlefield. Until next time, David out!

  • Sorry to ask, but is it going to be as hard as the Hyperdimension RPGs?

  • Really looking forward to this. Glad its being localized!

  • Nice, btw does this game have Dual Audio like the other games?

  • I need to ask, Is there’s DLC characters? ‘Cause i’m willing to buy at least 1 DLC character. :)

  • So, uh, are you guys going to do what IF and CH did in Japan and just pretend that that certain feature of the game, the one that a fair few people were not particularly pleased with, doesn’t exist?

I’ll be picking this up regardless, but it seems rather disingenuous for that to have had little to no mention yet when we’re so close to the supposed release now.

  • @4
The Japanese version had a few DLC characters, one of which is an entirely new character to the franchise, who I’m particularly looking forward to seeing.

  • Awesome. I cannot wait for this and the others coming to Vita. I loved the last game so I’m really looking forward to this.

  • @5 Any more details on what that is? I’m curious.

  • Looks really weird. Wouldn’t want to be playing something like this out in public on a Vita, that’s for sure. Also, this series spawns so many different spin-offs that it’s actually to the point of insanity. What’s the whole appeal of “Hyperdimension Neptunia” anyway? I really don’t get it. Though, I am happy to see yet another game localised. Localizations are always nice, despite what game it may be.

  • All I will say, is….NOOOOIRRREEE!!! BLAAACCKK HEARRRRTTT!!!! I LUV YOU!!! <3 <3 <3 If I ever have a choice between buying this game's Limited Edition over that of Re;birth2, I'd choose this game any day of the week.

  • What? Hyperdimension Neptunia only has 3 spinoffs: This game, Hyperdimension Neptunia U and Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection.

  • I’m looking forward to this but got yo admit I hate the 3D chibi art direction that this and most other SRPG’s are taking nowadays. It just seems lazy and between this and the new guided fate game I have to say that I really hate seeing it.

That said, I’m still gonna buy this day one because Noire is my favorite character in the HDN series and i’d love to try this game out. Thanks for localizing it!

  • I haven’t even played the rest of the series yet . I went straight to Neptunia Victory and I’m not done on that one either.

  • Looks great! Can’t wait to play.

  • Thanks for dubbing the game. I also have a question. Does the game have an easy mode for those who kinda suck at these type of games?

  • Nice work, keep up the good work. Once i play Hyperdimension PP and watch the anime series i got hook on the games more then ever. I get to cheer on my favorite Goddess Black Heart Noire more now in her own game. :) You guys should created PS Vita NeptuniaApp just like for smartphone on the PS Vita with all CPU’s so everyone can have fun with their favorite CPU’s.

  • Dear David:

as a hardcore neptunia fan, i am really not convinced to buy this game, you guys haven’t confirmed Playstation TV compatibility

    YET

still have not enabled PS TV Support for RE;BIRTH 1 & PP (I know this one is from NISA) but still.

If you guys enable support for RE;BIRTH and NOIRE

    Il buy it

other way il wait for a sale.

    • Hey DJ_Tomato!

Noire will indeed be PSTV-compatible, as will the upcoming Re;Birth2. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Re;Birth1 will get PSTV compatibility, though we can’t speak for Neptunia PP as that was published by NISA.

Moving forward, we’re going to ensure that any title published in Japan with PSTV-compatibility will be the same in the West. Thanks!

  • Me and many hardcore fans will appreciate your official answer on this, Facebook PR manager is terrible and refuses to give an official answer.

Please consider these posts as an very important matter and a big decision for all Neptunia fans and PS TV owners

    Regards

  • Is it going to have spanish subs? If not I’ll buy it anyway haha it looks F ing great!

  • @16 That reminds me, I think FUNi needs to hurry up and update us with any news regarding the anime’s English dub and/or BD release. It’s been forever since they announced it, and High School DxD New, which was announced at the same time as Neptunia, is already out so..I dunno what the deal is.

I know FUNi doesn’t read the PS Blog and IFI doesn’t have much to do with them, but still.

  • This is going to be an amazing year if not only Re;birth2 and Hyperdevotion Noire comes out, but also Re;birth 3 and Neptunia U!

On the other hand, I heard IFFY will finally have its own online store. I hope this means that not only will they be able to handle international releases properly, but also allow international customers to buy the LE of Re;birth1 if they reprint it, after the fiasco with amazon.

@DJ_Tomato IIRC, IFFY addressed this issue in an e-mail or announcement, and basically said that we can expect Re;birth2 and later games to include PS TV compatibility from the beginning. They couldn’t get it ready in time for Re;birth1, but they expect to patch it in the future once their workload allows it (basically, they will probably do so AFTER releasing Re;birth2 and Hyperdevotion Noire).

Last, but not least, I do would like to say that I do feel a bit disappointed that the localization is not using the full title of the game, which would basically be something along the lines of:

Hyperdevotion Noire: Planet Destroyer Black Heart

  • @Hakumen__

Yes, indeed, but this have been said MONTHS AGO..

We need a real and official updated answer.

Tecmo Koei, XSEED Games and KONAMI managed to solve PSTV compatibility issue with their games in few WEEKS,

    IFI just being LAZY.

  • Will Iffy be a playable character? (sorry if this was already asked or shown)

  • Day 1

    Yes, dual audio

  • Played Hyperdimension Neptunia through Gamefly.
Thought it was a pretty good game, though I couldn’t get into the story very much.

Consider lowering your digital prices considerably, and I may be interested.

Already have this in my que.

You’ll notice they’re leaving out any mention of the faceless self-insert protagonist that romances Noire throughout the game and saps away a huge amount of screentime from basically everyone, which is a terrible shame considering how many awesome looking characters it has. Instead of much focus on any of them, from what I’m understanding, much of it instead goes to this guy, and I’m not really seeing much mention of him even existing here. IF and CH similarly didn’t mention much of this character’s existence, or the mode where you/he flirts with Noire, until right before release, and a lot of people feel like the game was advertised falsely and what they showed off (a game about Noire and her friends based off of various game series) wasn’t a good representation of what they were actually selling (a game about a random guy and Noire with some other characters who aren’t there very much).

    @23
Pretty sure she’s one of the DLC characters. I think the four are her, Compa, Tiara from Fairy Fencer F, and then Sting, the personification of the company of the same name.

  • Two things, put all girls in the games, no more dlc only and make a HDN roguelike spin-off. Pass that along to the team.

  • @17
If I recall correctly, I believe the Japanese version of PP did indeed get a patch (alongside quite a bit of pieces of DLC that we never got) to bring PS TV compatibility to the game. Unfortunately with NISA being…well, NISA, we never got it or much of the Japan-only costume DLC.

All the more reason why I’m glad IFI is taking over international releases of the Neptunia series.

  • @26
Unfortunately it’s not as easy to use everyone when other companies own a huge chunk of the cast. Compile Heart can’t use characters like Gust, Marvelous, or Nisa unless those companies let them, from what I understand.

  • i’m disappointed that rebirth 1 wont be compatible with the vita tv.i’m baffled because i hear that it does have compatibility with the japanese vita tevee. sucks for IF fans though

  • i posted this on the EU blog but usually these types of posts never get replies to them so i’m gonna paste it here as well

“Hey David, any idea when we’ll be able to pre-order this and Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2 on Amazon UK or Shopto? i want to give you guys my money but it won’t let me because i can’t pre-order these games”

  • I agree with DJ_Tomato, PSTV Compatibility for both Rebirth 1, & PP is a MUST! I even bought my PSTV 3 days ago with Neptunia PP, only to discover that it’s not compatible.
The only thing now I’m playing with it is Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus because of this.

  • i love you guys! thank you so much for bringing these amazing games to the US and EU, this is a day one purchase for me! i hope you guys keep releasing these games, because as long as you do i will keep buying them!

  • Building up a Hyperdimension collection so far. Vita with PP, Rebirth 1. Can’t wait for this and Rebirth 2.

Hope it a bit less grindy to complete than Disgaea.

  • I just got into the series with Re;birth 1 and I loved it.
I’m so getting this and Re;birth 2 when they come out.
I’m glad to hear it’s English dubbed. (thanks for not being cheap like Xseed games).

Anyways, any word if Hyperdevotion Noire will have a limited edition?

  • Plat Re;Birth 1, cannot wait for Re;Birth 2, and though I’m not a SRPG fan, I’ll pick this up to support the series and hopefully get Neptunia U and Re;Birth 3 announced faster ;) lol

  • I’m looking forward to this game! Currently I’m playing Monster Monpiece.

  • This looks awesome I love SRPGs and Hyperdimension Neptunia so this is a must buy for me :) I honestly think the Chibi art style is a nice change of pace especially considering this is a spin-off so why not have some fun with it :D

  • A good game!

  • @36:

You can mark one of those off your wish list – it looks like we’ll indeed be getting Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed in the New Year:

    http://gematsu.com/2014/12/hyperdimension-neptunia-u-coming-west-spring-2015

  • Yo! Will throw my support in for Re;Birth 1 needing that PS TV compatibility. Want to play on the big screen! :(

Anyway, looking forward to Re;Birth 2, Noire and U next year (as well as other likely Nep Announcements).

  • I WANT ROGUE GALAXYYYY FOR VITAAAA PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Basically this game is a tactics based game I own it in Japanese I love how the game was built I can’t wait for day one

  • Well, this looks like a big disappointment. I am sad that I wasted the money buying a vita to play this. Wish I had actually looked into to it better before my husband bought it for me. I liked the other games but this just looks horrible.
