Science Puzzler Splice Coming to PS4, PS3 on Jan. 20th

Hello there, Playstation.Blog! I hope you’re looking forward to the new year just as much as we are. This year is already shaping up to be fantastic. In that vein, we’re so excited to announce that Splice will be launching on PS4 and PS3 on January 20th for $14.99 as a cross buy game! Save 20% for the first 2 weeks by being a Playstation Plus Member.

We’ve been working for months to bring you a truly amazing experience for Playstation. It’s been a childhood dream of ours for such a long time to release a game on a console, and Splice will be our very first. We couldn’t be more excited to share with you our award-winning puzzler.

In Splice, you are tasked with rearranging cellular strands. Sound complicated? It can be, but as you progress, you gain a greater understanding of how the structure works. We spent a lot of time making sure the controls feel as intuitive as possible. Simply roll around your controller to let the universe move or lay back and let the world take you over.

SpliceSplice

Splice isn’t the kind of game you just play. It’s the kind of game you experience. Allow yourself to become immersed in the puzzles and let the delicious yet cinematic soundtrack wash over you. Conquer the main game, then take on the epilogue. We’ve created a difficult but rewarding challenge for novice and master puzzle-solvers alike.

We’ve been working hard with PlayStation and Unity to bring you the ultimate experience of Splice. Play with it, engage with it, and most importantly enjoy!

  • Screamie is excited.

  • Why isn’t this coming to Vita?

  • This looks good, have to mirror Styro though, would love to see this on Vita too…

  • My favorite part of these types of games is the soundtrack

  • No physical release, no sale.

  • Great, huh?

  • I wish the trailer gave a better sense of the gameplay.

  • Would have been awesome on Vita.

  • It looks like it would fit perfectly for the Vita.

  • To the annoying “why not PS Vita” people, this game was announced in June of 2013 for PS4 and PS3. Not ever puzzler is meant to be on the Vita. The devs already explained why it’s not coming to Vita in that Blog post:

“Splice was built using the Unity engine. For the moment, there’s no support for porting the game directly to the PS Vita platform. The good folks at Unity are working hard on making such support available, though. The best we can do for now is bring it to you via the PS3/PS4, which is pretty exciting in its own right. Especially with the potential for PlayStation Move support.”

It’s their choice what platform they bring it to anyway. Grow up.

  • She blinded me with SCIENCE!!

  • Seems awesome but, isn’t that just the same as flOw? The description says that you only have to move the controler, and you control some cells and stuff.

Sorry if I’m beign a little bit of a jerk, I’m just confused. But, again, that seems pretty awesome! Good luck with the game, guys!

    • Thanks for the luck, we’ll take what we can get =)

The gameplay is very different from most games. It’s really just something you have to try. But, there are a few gameplay vids on youtube if you want to take a look there.

  • Dangggg, this shizzzzzzzz looks craaaaayyyyzaaaay! STOKED!

  • @12 I agree that not every game, let alone every puzzle game, needs to be on the Vita. However, the excuse they gave is TOTAL BS. I’ve only just begun in game development and have been able to get a prototype up and running on a retail Vita.

Either way, the game looks… interesting… I’ll have to check this out a bit more!

  • Looks like an engrrossing game. Can’t wait to check it out. Really loved the piano music in the trailer, hits all the right notes!

    • Thanks! I hope you enjoy it! We really believe Splice is a truly unique experience. Don’t hesitate to let us know what you think, if you end up picking it up =)

  • To everyone interested in this game, it is fun. It’s been out on android for a while. I got it as part of a humble bundle, but you can get it on the play store for $2.99. Worth that price. Fun on a smartphone or tablet.
Sigh, I just don’t understand why Sony has to charge $15 for indie android ports.
Price it right and watch it sell! This isn’t rocket science people!
    Ok, rant over. I’m gone.

  • Smart move not putting it on Vita, where it would be perfect. Always keep the consumer dumbfounded.

  • $15?! I got this free on Steam YEARS ago.

  • Pricing yourselves out of business. Most people will just wait for this game to hit the IGC in a few months.

  • Hey William,

Your game looks really cool! I look forward to hearing more info about it.

I wanted to ask if you guys would consider on making “Dynamic Themes” and “Avatar Pictures” for the PS4. Your game would look cool displayed on everyone’s PS4.

    Cheers!!!

    Rob aka Graf

P.S. Please keep posting info on the PS Blog as your game gets closer to launch, thanks.

  • Released on Steam – June 2012
Released on iOS – August 2012
Announced on PS blog aiming for a “late summer or early fall” release – June 2013
Released on Android – September 2013
Released on PSN – January 2015

What took so long to port? Not criticizing, but genuinely curious as to what can delay a game of this scope for more than a year. Is it a development snafu, a business decision, or something else?

  • @13 Unity Engine supports Vita now.

  • I have a deep deep love for Puzzle games. Never picked this up on other platforms so I’ll for sure pick it up on the PS4. Looks great!

  • Bought it already on Android, great game, would love to get it on Vita though.

  • @24 My guess is Sony wanted them to take the time to bring it to PS4. If that means taking another year, making some extra money from mobile devices to help with costs, and making sure it works flawlessly with DualShock 4 then so be it.

@17 Oh, you’ve only just begun “game development?” I’ll take the sincere explanation from people who have shipped an actual game over yours. Sorry. Besides, there’s nothing stopping them from bringing it to Vita (with Cross-Buy) in the future.

    • You’re my personal hero. You’re guesses are pretty accurate. Developing a game isn’t all about the actual development. Business happens quite a bit.

      Thanks for the support!

  • I have this game on pc ad it is nothing like flow since you trying to match a mutation pattern.

  • My friends and I loved Auditorium on PS3, and I backed Auditorium 2 on Kickstarter.

I’ve been waiting for Splice on PS3 for some time, so I’m psyched it’s coming to PS4 as well! I just hope that you’re subverting the Unity asset pipeline so it doesn’t mutilate your awesome music with its crappy MP3 asset defaults. I’d personally love to hear 24-bit FLAC on PS4 like other titles have had.

I’m kind of confused about Unity support on Vita. Other Unity titles shipped on Vita, and there’s PSM support in Unity. As a user of Unity for a number of years, I find working with their tools extremely frustrating (especially across releases).

  • It says Splice is cross buy for both PS3 and PS4. However, on the PSN Store page it shows it with just a PS Plus discount for both systems, so is this still a cross buy or was that a misprint? Thanks.

  • Okay, once I purchased the PS4 version, I was able to download for free the PS3 version in my download list history. Thanks.
