Plex Out Today, Stream Your Personal Media to PS4 and PS3

Plex on PS3, PS4

Hey PlayStation Nation, we have been listening to you and want to share some great news with you. Later on today we’re bringing the Plex service to PS3 and PS4 today in the US, Canada and Latin America. I have actually seen the app in action and it’s pretty sweet.

Plex on PS3, PS4

For those not familiar, Plex organizes all of your personal media, wherever you keep it, so you can enjoy it on any device. Whether it’s your movie and TV show collection, your music library or your photos and home videos, Plex makes all your media beautiful by automatically incorporating movie posters, plot summaries, album covers and descriptions. Plex also allows you to share your media collection across all major platforms and devices as well as with your friends and family. At launch, the app will only allow you to stream your videos, but the ability to stream your music and photos will be coming shortly.

Plex on PS3, PS4

Plex for PlayStation is currently available for free to Plex Pass subscribers. In the future, it will be made available, for a fee, to those without a Plex Pass. In addition to the PlayStation app, a Plex Pass also gives you exclusive premium features and early access to new ones.

  • I recommend using PS3 Media Server for PS3 (not sure if PS4 is supported, but if it reads content the same way as the PS3 does, it should work) and Plex for everything else. Yes, it’s two media-server hosting apps you have to run….but it’s free all around. I think if Plex’s fee is modest and is just an up front cost instead of a subscription, then it may be worth it. As PeinRykudo suggested, the PS4’s web browser can help offset the loss of some app support or the costly ones…just have a solid internet speed to stream with.

  • “Hey PlayStation Nation, we have been listening to you and want to share some great news with you.” This is insulting our intelligence. Or maybe it’s just broadcasting your intelligence, but it’s a farce. DLNA is not an App that requires a Paid Subscription Service. You haven’t been listening to anything. Good for the Plex Subscribers out there… but don’t make it sound like this is the solution to you making DLNA work on PS4. What a joke.

  • So, instead of putting DLNA back in the PS4 I now need to subscribe to some service to use my media on my PS4?!?!

    Thanks for nothing!

  • WOOHOO Plex is great…I use it on PC and Mac to stream to my TVs…now it should be more seamless.

  • Sony! Where is the native DLNA support? Why pay for all these apps and services? I have had ps3, and purchased PS4 thinking this would exist. This was a real bad call not to have DLNA. With today’s announcement, Xbox integration and windows 10 makes it a better device. You need to step it up.

  • Native DLNA or GTFO. Thanks for the option, but is not a reasonable replacement for a bare minimum feature. It’s like buying a car, but not being able to turn on the headlights. The power is there. The headlights are there. But I have to buy a switch to turn on the headlights separately? Unacceptable.

  • How pointless . Charging people to use a service that’s been free from the get go. I been using plex on my ps4 since launch . Just rather than the using the app with a pass just stream it through a ip an use your Web browser on the ps4 to watch

  • I have nothing against Plex ,it looks like a great service. Currently, however, my PS4 just sits there like a brick, save for an occasional game or two. We use the PS3 about 95% of the time. Why? No DLNA support and no media remote. We watch everything on the PS3! Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and movies stored on our home network. I seriously regret buying the PS4 so early. The only reason I did was I saw Shuhei Yoshida say they’d be working on it. That was the end of 2013. I feel duped.

  • This is so great that I’ve just suscribed!

Sadly the app is a shadow of the former PC one but I hope many of the features living in the PC version will be on PS4, channels and trailers being my most wanted things.

  • Ha. Cool story bro. I gotta pay a subscription to play the game I already own on PS3. I gotta pay a subscription to play the media I already have at home. Can you tell me how much the subscription will be to use my media remote? Or maybe a subscription to use the Internet I already have at home.

These new feature posts seem to mention you’re listening to feedback. But you’re clearly only hearing what you want or just simply don’t care.

So disappointed since day one. Feel like a sucker for investing into this platform since the original playstation.

    Blah blah blah.

    So on so forth.

    No one is listening anyway.

    Take my money. Who cares.

  • Good news. Thanks.

  • With Sony going with Plex you can say goodbye to DNLA.

  • I appreciate that playstation 4 has this app now but the truth is I pay for hulu and netflix on top of buying games for the ps4 that are about 60 dollars each I even brought it new not used so having a 500 dollar machine that doesnt do this already without a app is ridiculous its quite disappointing when theres blueray players for 20 bucks bucks that do this through dnla support plex is ok but I refuse to pay for another subscription. This is suppose to be the new generation of machines why does it feel like Sony took a step back instead of forward their constantly trying to sell us… their customers some type of subscription, ps plus,ps now and music unlimited and all of this because of piracy of movies, games and music I dont like the fact that they control how we watch, listen and play things on the very expensive machine that we brought from them with our hard earned money.
sorry that this turned into a rant it was just very annoying.

  • This is a middle man service where you have to pay for DLNA, a service which was free on last generation consoles.

  • Now if we could just watch twitch on PS4 like we used to be able to.

  • Ps4 is a great piece of hardware, but the software continues to disappoint.

  • “Fortunately we have a product for people who wish to access their personal media, it’s called PlayStation 3.”

  • It kind of doesn’t make sense to try and have people subscribe to plex, when you can just use your plex account for free through the ps4’s web browser, without a subscription. Thats the way I do it..

  • The PS3 already recognizes the Plex monitored folders, so everything in your Plex is available on your PS3. It’s nice to see the actual app come, but is pointless to pay for since you don’t need it.

  • Get out of here Sony, we want FREE DLNA streaming, the ability to store music, videos and photos in OUR HDD and custom wallpapers and themes.

  • IS SONY REALLY THIS DUMB THERE COSTING THEMSELVES MONEY IN THE LONG RUN?? my xb1 streams everything AND has no cineiva crap and can dvr my cable! Therefore it gets plugged into my big tv and used as a main system leaving my ps4 setup on a smaller tv and used less because it does less, just driving me away… im ready to see Microsoft release hololens and smash sony for good!! sick of this chincy jap crap anyways this a win for America!!!

  • Thanks but NO… I´m not going to pay a cent to watch my files on TV via PS4

  • Rubbish. Why should i have to pay to share media effectively.

  • That’s great! I remember a long time ago when i thought Plex was supposed to be always free, but when i checked it out, i had found out you had to pay for a subscription. With all these DLNA devices I have yet not to get a chance to use all my devices to it’s full potential without being robbed. xD

I just want to play my own media without having to pay to see it. I’m gonna try Universal Media Server atm heard it’s a free and clean media server.

If you guys want to check it out. http://www.universalmediaserver.com/ Just thought i’d share. They seem to have better compatibility than plex and you don’t have to be swindled!

  • Doesn’t allow you to play music?!

  • The “Pay-To-Play” structure is killing me. Take into account that users have already spent good money to get this far. Now, you ask for more $$$ simply to watch what I should be able to already see. The PS4 needs DLNA like it’s predecessor. We are too far away from launch to still be in this situation, IMHO.

  • DLNA SUPPORT!!!! We are waiting for it almost a year! MUST DO IT AT ONCE!

  • So the previous generation of consoles has the media features built in (DLNA), but us next-gen players have to pay a subscription to use these features through a third-party application. Playing media is standard on devices now, but PS4 still cannot do it. My TV even had a built-in USB media player… I’m terribly disappointed.

  • @RE4LNOiZE_42 I 100% agree with your assessment. I don’t understand why this is such a difficult thing for them to deliver, and there are so many people who want. I also think that having to turn on my PC just to run the plex software is idiotic. Sony don’t you support “green” solutions? The need for a person’s PC to be turn does not support a “green” concept, get with the times.

  • An autoplay feature would be much appreciated! Other than that it runs flawlessly I do not understand how other people are having such problems.

  • I just hope that this is not our official DLNA replacement. Lately I only turn on my PS4 to watch something on Crunchyroll, and the way it is, I’ll probably sell it after we get FFXV. I love how MS keeps improving XOne, trying to boost their sales, while Sony does nothing to please us, as the PS4 is still ahead.

  • Pathetic Sony. Can’t even afford to pay their own programmers to add the DLNA code they already wrote for the PS3 to the Duststation 4. Embarrassed to own this console. XBONE is really looking like the console to own.

  • Hi Everyone, I have a question, I know you need a plex server to catalogue all the video files but I do not want another device on together with my ps4 to stream media and I do not have a NAS device. Can the plex app on the ps4 detect video files attached locally using an External USB Drive?

  • Where is LOCAL MEDIA (mp4 etc…) support Sony? Patch the PS4 already.
