Amplitude: First Gameplay Trailer, Team Multiplayer Revealed

Hey there, fellow FreQ!

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to talk to you about Amplitude, but with PAX East right around the corner, and looking at the great progress we’ve been making in development, it seems like a great time to show you what we are up to.

Amplitude on PS4, PS3

Team Amplitude has been working feverishly to bring a sweet build of the game to PAX East, and as of this past week, we think that we nailed it. In the past few months since showing the game at PlayStation Experience, we’ve put a real focus on multiplayer, hoping to get groups battling it out at PAX East.

While we were focusing on the gameplay for Amplitude multiplayer, I started posing a question to the team: What can we do to even the playing field when pro players sit on the couch to play against new players? During a team meeting, I discussed thoughts that I had for things like “rubber-banding” and power-up distribution, and out of nowhere, Amplitude Audio Lead Pete Maguire threw out the idea of team play. TEAM PLAY!? Genius!

Amplitude on PS4, PS3

Team play is something we’d never done in Amplitude before, and allowing players to team up 2v2 or even 3v1 sounded like an amazing way to even the playing field without disrupting the current design. We decided to give it a shot, and after some iteration and tweaking, we are proud to say that it’s already super fun.

It’s been a really interesting challenge, balancing the gameplay carefully between casual and hardcore. We want to create a game that can be super fun in a party situation, while also being tight and sharp in a way that could potentially even appeal to the competitive gaming community. I think that we’re on the right track now that we have both the classic Free-For-All Multiplayer mode and the new Team Play mode. Time will tell, but we have a couple of months to really suss it out, playtest the crap out of it, and get some great feedback from fans.

We’re excited to showcase this brand new feature at PAX East this week. There will be a few Amplitude kiosks set up at the Harmonix booth on the show floor (#4224). We’ll be there playing the game with everyone, so stop by and check it out if you’re attending!

Speaking of Team Play and PAX, we were invited by the fine folks at Penny Arcade some weeks ago asking if they could use Amplitude as one of the games in their Omegathon tournament! They specifically asked if we had a way to whittle down teams. Luckily, we were working on the perfect feature for that, and we can’t wait to see folks go head-to-head with one another in front of a large audience Saturday morning of PAX East.

Keep an eye out for us on the PAX East floor and in the Omegathon this weekend. In the meantime, we’d like to give the PlayStation community an opportunity to check out new gameplay footage in the world premiere of our very first Amplitude gameplay trailer here on the PlayStation.Blog, just above this very paragraph. We hope you like it!

  • March PS+ lineup please.

  • PHANTOMS!! … PHANTOMS!!

I can NOT wait for this to be released. It’d be really cool to see some of the original (in-house and licensed) songs as unlockable/bonus songs — hell, I would definitely buy them as DLC.

    How about some Tribe?
    /backer

    • I know! PHANTOMS!
We are all singing that line throughout the day here at HMX. Roger (lead coder) has the sample open on his machine and triggers it about 40 times a day.

  • March PS+ will be skipped this month.

  • So excited for Amplitude! Sad about the whiny idiots complaining about March PS+ on this post, it takes away from the crazy awesomeness that is this game (can you tell I’m a KS backer?).

  • How about them PS+ games for March, SCE!

  • I complained about no IGC info on the PS now update. But the people spamming the blog posts from actual devs trying to raise awareness of their game is pathetic, they have no control over the situation.

I for one am really looking forward to the new amplitude! Thanks for sharing.

  • #6 is another one.

This thread is by the Art Director of Harmonix.
What does he have to do with PS+ games?

  • Really looking forward to the release of this game!……….You people need to stop hijacking every post with your constant whining about the March IGC. It will get here when it gets here, and besides, you’re not going to get them until tomorrow anyway!

  • Never thought we would get to see another Amplitude game, especially in these times.

  • Hehe, who needs plastic instruments anyway?

  • My most anticipated PS4 game by a long shot. This looks awesome, keep up the good work!

    • Thank you! I hope some of you guys can meet up with us at PAX and play some multiplayer. I am guessing my beatmatch-tortured fingers will be bleeding after a day of demos… but I am up for the challenge!
      (Sweet PaRappa pic BTW)

  • Nobody is talking about this game, nor are we trying to reach the art director of this game when we ask about PS+.

I’m pretty sure the guys at blog do get to know what the title is and therefore it’s just realistic asking here.

Just like you’re crying about me and others asking for PS+ games, I can go on and cry about the missing PS+ list.

  • As one of first 1,000 backers for the kick starter, I’m patiently waiting to play this game. I’ve gotten most of my friends hyped up for it as well. Can’t wait to play this!!!

  • I backed Amplitude on kickstarter, so you guys and gals can all thank me. :)

  • This will be my first Amplitude game, and I gotta say it’s looking nice! It reminds of Rock Band Blitz (which I believe was inspired by Amplitude, right?) which I enjoyed. Keep it up guys!

  • @13

It’s not missing, it launches tomorrow.
Where are they obligated to disclose the list early?
Entitled brats, that’s what you are. No respect for these devs on this classic game.

    Well done Harmonix!

  • Looks absolutely SICK. Loved the original on the Playstation 2 and I can’t wait to play one of my favourite games again on the Playstation 4 after so many years of waiting.

  • From a Kickstarter backer, I can’t wait for this. You guys are doing a tremendous job based on the demo I played at PSX. Can’t wait to see more as the summer goes on!

  • Seriously??? You continue posting things and ignoring us XD? This is just to much, KEEP POSTING, KEEP THE HATE.
    March PS+ lineup please.

  • screw your indie games and tell us the IGC. it better be AAA games or we riot.

  • madmanwithabox12

Any chance of this ever coming to Vita. Looking good so far.

PS+ whiners, go pester Sony, not these innocent devs. It’s beyond rude and ignorant.

  • Wow it’s going to be a tough day for any Dev’s posting on the blog. I would highly suggest telling Sony that no more posts from Dev’s will happen until IGC is released.

On that note, this reboot looks cool. Hopefully has an attractive price point.

  • madmanwithabox12 we will continue to hijack these articles until we get PS Plus update. if anyones trolling its Sony.

  • @ madmanwithabox12

Well said…….I like the one that says “it better be AAA games or we riot.” ……Where will they riot? In their Moms house? Lol.

  • @17: because that’s what their standard is for the last year?
Because they always give out the list before the games go online?

the only thing people want to know is if ps+ getting delayed this month or no.

If it is, then they should just say so – ignoring us and not telling us a thing except “it may be very well next week” is not helping out.

A lot of people expect more from sony esp. since they made plus a must for online play and if i pay for something I want something in return

  • @27 And he’s not even a Plus member so his opinion is worth as much as used toilet paper.

  • I agree with 22. This game really needs to come to Vita.

  • I blame Sony for this mess. Unfortunately people just want a heads up on what is going on. It would take maybe one minute to post something like hey, we are still working on it. I don’t blame the “whiners”, but I feel for the hard working people who are just trying to post information about their game.
“Can’t we just all get along”

  • ok, so there is one guy paying for PS+ and asking for the games that were promised (what if he wants to buy game but waits if the game shows up on PS+?)

just because he is asking for something, that makes him a no lifer?

instead of arguing with us why don’t you move along?
seems like, the guy who is also paying for plus and (wanting games I guess?) does not have a life and tries to stop the people asking for their goods.

    smh

  • @27 Looks like you’re the one without life, because you’re still here trolling on the igc complainers !!

  • I loved Frequency and Amplitude on the PS2 and I’m going to have a blast with this reboot. Simply love the aesthetic in this version.

  • Is there plans for a Vita version?

I hope they stream the Omegathon from Boston this year. I had a blast watching it last year.

  • Welcome back, Frequency. The world’s still a pretty cool place if you ignore all the grown manchildren in diapers whining about PS+.

  • @28

I was a Plus subscriber way before the IGC even existed. Back when they gave us PS1 games, avatars, and an occasional theme. I let my sub expire back when they changed the format, and dropped the yearly IGC games. Now I sub on a month to month basis, depending on the games they offer. So your comment is about as useless as t#ts on a boar. Move along little entitled child!!

  • @32 I’m not trolling, I stated facts:

This thread is by the Art Director of Harmonix. Not Sony, not the IGC team, etc.
IGC complainers are trolling hard working devs and that’s just rude.

This guys says “screw your indie games and tell us the IGC”. Who respects a tool like that?
Number 28 is right. If you complain respectfully, I don’t care, but the disrespectful method of doing it will receive the same kind of response.

  • Back to Amplitude…

    Freezepop’s new track.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXuxCaeeZKk

  • I apologies, didnt know that the devs were posting, I allways though that was someone of Sony who managed the Blog with every entry, so my bad in there

  • @spacedelete2
    “AAA games or we riot”
    “Hijack these articles”
First of all son do you know what the word “hijack” even means?
Secondly how will a dev help with your ps+ games. If you want to cry and whine do it to sony.
Thirdly you are not a ps+ member. How does this even effect you.

  • I am less interested about playing Audiosurf on my playstation than i am about the upcoming PS+ IGC, but thanks anyway.

  • The game looks like a ton of fun. Makes me want to revisit Amplitude and Frequency.

And people whining about their “free” games of the month, knock it off.

  • This is one of the few indie games that I’m waiting so hard to play in PS4. Love HMX, love Rock Band and Blitz, and the ol’good Amplitude. Hope we get some news about Rock Band 4 soon, too.

  • I am beyond excited for this! Definitely one of my favorite ps2 titles to play online.

  • first day kickstarter backer, I can’t wait for this so come out

  • I’m finding it oddly hilarious that the blog post people are still posting regular stuff, as if oblivious to the fact that everyone is just waiting for the IGC update.

  • @#47, This blog has clearly been open to game developers to post about game projects they are working on to bring to Sony consoles and devices. There is an error in a lot of these angry replies targeted to the PlayStation company itself, shadowing these developer blog posts. It’s a shame.

    PHANTOMS!!

  • Cool, I remember these games. I’m going to stick to Dance Central for now though.

  • Looks neat, wouldn’t mind seeing this in the Plus lineup

  • Looks incredible. Are we still on track for a summer release?

  • TOO EXCITED FOR THIS
Can’t wait to get the game 2 weeks early, proudly display my ps2 box and wear my backer shirt

    YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As a backer of the KS at the $200 level, I could not be more psyched for this to hit. Harmonix always shows an absurd amount of inspiration in their games and this just looks exactly like I’d want a ‘next-gen’ Amplitude to be. Hoping for a great soundtrack with a lot of future support! Can’t wait for that vinyl either :)
