Rock Band 4 Coming to PS4 This Year!

Hey gang!

This is Eric Pope from Harmonix. All of us at the studio are beyond thrilled to announce today that Rock Band will make its triumphant return to living rooms this year with Rock Band 4 for PlayStation 4!

Rock Band 4

I’ve spent years as a community manager playing our various installments of Rock Band around the world with fans at every event you can imagine. I’m as excited as you are to have the next evolution of the franchise, Rock Band 4, on the current generation of console hardware.

Since we released Rock Band 3 in 2010, Harmonix has branched out, developing projects in a number of new areas including motion control, PC and even VR. With every new project, the studio has challenged the perception of what a “music game” can be, and learned a lot in the process. With those lessons under our belt, we felt like we were prepared to dive back into our beloved Rock Band series, and actually push the genre forward. We’ve landed on a design that doubles down on the core Rock Band experience fans love, while innovating on gameplay in some super exciting ways that we’ll have more to say about a little later this year.

Rock Band 4

I know what you’re wondering right about now:

“How about all those Rock Band DLC songs I bought on my PlayStation 3?”

That’s a fair question! We’ve always been committed to the idea that Rock Band is a platform, and as such Rock Band 4 will support all your previous DLC purchases at no additional cost! (Be sure to thank our friends at PlayStation, because we couldn’t pull this off without significant work from them!)

Meet the Team

The Rock Band 4 team is comprised of an immensely talented group of veteran game developers. I’m honored and humbled to work with these folks every day. This video piece will give you a chance to meet some of the passionate people behind the game and understand why we think the time is right for Rock Band’s return.

Make no mistake, Rock Band 4 isn’t a simple “next-gen remaster” of an existing game- it’s the next step forward for the series. I can’t wait to rock out with you later this year!

  • I really want to know how they plan on making the rockband 1 disc songs transfer (sense you had to put the disc into the system and it copied the tracks from the disc to the system)

And reading the comments made me laugh, they are currently working with both microsoft and sony to get existing controllers to work, the playstation ones are easier to do, the microsoft ones are apparently more of a challenge.

And to those who complain about loosing songs because they switched from microsoft to sony, no they won’t link the 360 purchases to the ps4 version, that would be stupid.

Last but not least, export of rockband 3 tracklist? and Can’t wait to finally break the 1000 mark on songs (945~ish and i’m expecting about 60-70 on disc tracks at least)

  • I can’t wait! I love music games and it’s been ages since a good one has come out. My hearts thumping just thinking about it! I love vocals the most so I’m wondering what ways that can be innovated.
Also, the one thing I know I’d like to see is a way to stream purchased songs. Back on PS3 I had to lug the whole machine around to play at a friends house. It would awesome if there was a way to stream music I’d purchased to my friends’ systems so we could enjoy all the music we buy when we visit for parties.

  • Oh Harmonix you sweet sweet loving company. I knew there was a reason to stay loyal to you. My wallet and close to 1000 DLC songs thank you.

I do have a question though. Will you guys be making some sort of easy transfer tool? Or maybe make it so that we can manually move those files over? I know the ball might be in sony’s court for that one, but nearly 30 GB of data would be much better to handle manually than to have to redownload again.

    • Great question. We’re still working through the logistics of all of this right now. Just to set your expectations, it will most likely need to be downloaded.

  • Can it be played using only the DualShock 4? I don’t want to buy accessories.

  • I’m genuinely really happy about this, love Rock Band and been wanting it on ps4 as I no longer have a ps3. I really hope they’re are some Finch songs, and a few more Muse songs would be nice too.

  • I want some more Queensryche, that’s my number 1 request. Then pink floyd, then steely dan, then anime music.

But the last one will never happen, so just do the number one.

  • Question regarding DLC transfer. Will I be able to access my DLC library WITHOUT having my PS3 anymore? I sold it when I got my PS4 and since I have hundreds of RB songs, I’d hate to not be able to get them again for free. Thanks!

  • Apparently I’m not the only one with a stash of songs on my 360. There is no way I would rebuy these again and would feel cheated if I purchased PS4 version. I’m ok with purchase of new peripherals, that’s obvious. I just think there should be a way to verify content with email address. If not, I’ll have to skip and just pull out the 360 when I feel like jamming.

  • Oh snap! So many great memories with these games! Can’t wait for more!

  • PLEASE can you make sure that the DLC is available on the South African PS Store! I don’t want to have to use my UK PSN account again

  • What about dlc that was taken down? (Metallica, System Of A Down) Will those still transfer over?

  • Given that Sony gets money from anything we buy through PSN (including RB songs), it would make sense to find a way to allow people who bought tons of songs on the 360 platform to somehow be able to get them on the PS4, since many people have jumped ships for this generation. Then all of their future song purchases will be done on PSN, and thus bringing money to Sony.

Right now, a lot of people will either buy the Xbox One version (to get all the songs they paid for), some maybe even willing to buy a Xbox One just for this, or just not buy Rock Band 4 at all, in both cases preventing Sony from making money on song sales trough PSN.

There’s no way someone will re-buy all their songs on PSN.

I’m not sure how this could be done though, as purchase history is tied to Xbox account. And I’m not sure Microsoft would allow Sony to access those. OR Harmonix could maybe create a website (or a piece of PC software) that could access Microsoft Games for Windows Live service, as this is the same user account that is used on Xbox, so maybe purchase history could be available this way, and then unlock those purchases on PSN for the user. But there may be licensing issues… so maybe it would not be possible anyway…

  • @JustenV

Re-buying songs? What? He clearly stated that all of your previous purchases will be included…

  • This is fantastic news. I’ve always loved the Rock Band series. I’ve spent AT LEAST $300 total on DLC over all the years I’ve played, so I am very pleased I’ll be able to play those songs again at no charge.

  • How is the on-disc soundtracks from past games gonna work since they’re on different consoles? Will be just be paying for the setlist from those games? I don’t understand.

  • One thing is clear, Rock Band would eventually need to develop a standard store that would be platform-independant. Users would log into the Rock Band network and all their purchased songs would be available, no matter the platform they play on.

This would save Harmonix a lot of trouble for having to deal with multiple storefronts on each platform, as Rock Band songs shouldn’t in theory be different from system to system, as they are mostly simply digital data (like an MP3 song, only with multiple tracks and trigger information for each instruments notes on varying difficulty levels).

And this would also simplify users lives, knowing that buying a RB song would allow you to play on whatever console you have. Exactly like paying for a Netflix subscription allows you to use the service on multiple devices. Like my Comixology purchases that are available anywhere. Like Kobo and Kindle books too.

Personnaly, I think Rock Band has become a little too big to stay “exclusive” to the platform it was bought on initially. With 2000+ DLC songs, it doesn’t make sense anymore to keep this thing platform-locked.

  • Need to clarify something before I get too excited with this…..1st rock band is probably my fave game EVER…..

so I have an xbox360, I own Rock band 3, lego rock band, rock band beatles, rock band green day, rock band ACDC and 600 DLC tracks

I used to own but part ex’d Rock band 1 and 2. However I did redeem the codes to transfer the songs.

    Question is

I now own a PS4, how much if any of the DLC and previous content can be imported to my ps4?

Will the songs on the PS4 release disc be different to that of Rock band 3 of old?

    thanks

  • BROTHERSPLUS2013

Hey Mr. Pope, will RB4 come only in disc like the others or we will have the chance to buy it as a digital game through PS Store??

  • Yes …. Please allow Beatles Rock Band to be migrated to PS4! I never got the chance to play enough when I had the PS3, and I have these great instruments set up.

  • What’s the 411 on Rock Band Network stuff? I’m still holding out hope that the songs I had authored to show up on a Playstation system.

  • I have really missed playing Rockband. Now my kids are old enough to sing and jam along! I can’t wait to share this experience with them. Thanks for bringing your game to a new generation of gamers! Earth, Wind and Fire please!

  • Is it going to actually work? You know, unlike the crashing mess of RB3 on PS3 that was unplayable for many of us?

  • please try to include more classic rock, old country & maybe even some stuff from the 50s. I have 17,500 songs on my computer. The songs on the games only add up to maybe about a quarter of all of that. I love a great variety of music. Maybe some more solo Beatles stuff including more Paul & John, & also include some George & even Ringo. Also I would love to see some ELO or even the Traveling Wilburys. Also I was wondering if you would ever consider making it for PS3, because I didn’t want to have to buy a PS4. I have 30 games for the PS3. If not I’ll think about buying it later when the price goes down

  • Transferring songs from one console to another shouldn’t be that big of a deal. Does anyone remember the Rockband site where you could link your PSN and XBL accounts? The songs should be available across both platforms or have a transfer option.
EA, Sony and Microsoft all have ways of getting this data since the RB site knew which songs you purchased for which system.
I know several people who would rather have it on PS4 now when they had it on 360 last gen.

  • Exciting news! I hope this will available for PS3 also. Either way – I would like to see the ability to purchase DLC songs that are available in other regions (like Europe and Japan). I have seen a lot of songs that were just not available here. I know some of it is licensing, but some of it seems intentional with songs that are not in English. It would be nice if there was some way to create your own content to go with an artist’s song – Even if you have to pay for the song, it would be good for those that are into not as popular music and also solve the region problem too.

  • Cool. I got into Rock Band, but didn’t have my own console until the instruments were already getting hard to find and so never bothered. Will definitely be looking into this. One of my all time favorite party games.

  • So here’s a question…. I had Rock Band for the Wii…. will the songs I bought transfer. I know that’s probably a huge request, but if the answer is yes I swear I will stand up right where I am and give you a round of applause (for what it’s worth).

  • I’m in the “All of my songs are on my X360” boat. I have so many songs, it would be cheaper to buy an XBO than to rebuy all of my DLC, but that is NEVER going to happen. So, I guess here are my remaining options:

    1. Hope that HMX can find a way to make DLC cross-console compatible (which is the least likely option it seems).

    B. If option 1 fails, that HMX can figure out a way to pacify us “switchers” with a huge, HUGE sale or freebie bundle.

    or the most likely option…

$. Just continue to play Rock Band on my X360 and resign myself to the fact I’ll never upgrade to the current gen version.

  • Will there be anyway of transferring games we owned from xbox 360? possibly my favorite game franchise of all time (definitely my most played) and i would love to still have all those songs as i switched from xbox 360 to PS4 with the next gen consoles, also on a side note will the leaderboards be reset with the older games or all the same standings?

  • Will RB4 be compatible for PS3?

  • I am hoping playlist capabilities are improved. I wrote my own web interface to create playlists on the Rock Band web site, but I want to just be able to go to the RB web site, see and filter all the tracks I own, and create a playlist there, so when I boot up the game the playlist is ready to go.

  • I am so excited about this. I wonder if they will have a bundles again and how on earth I Am going to move all of my ps3 dlcs to ps4, woohoo about time.

  • Can it be played using only the DualShock 4? I don’t want to buy accessories…

  • I’m also in the 360 songs club but PS4 in current gen. So many great memories and so much great DLC but I can’t see myself rebuilding a catalog again from scratch. If DLC licenses transfer from the 360 I’m all in and will likely buy a lot more going forward.

Exciting and deflating news at the same time.

  • I see they have mentioned that previous xbox will work on next gen xbox and ps3 will work on ps4 but they havent answered the question that everybody is asking……..if we got DLC on PS3 will that work on XBOX ONE and will xbox360 DLC work on PS4?

If it doesnt then I for one am not interested in RB4. I certainly wont be buying an xboxone just to play this!

What about the game disc port licenses for the likes of RB1, RB2, Rbgd, Rbbeatles, RBacdc etc etc?? If none of this can be ported across formats then I see no point in the new game, it’s just going to Pee a lot of people off.

  • Will this include all the songs from previous games? if so that would be AMAZING

(for replies can you msg me on PS i am “KillinGamer115” (without the quotes))
    {any help is appreciated just msg me on PS}

  • I started playing Rock Band 2 years ago. I wanted to learn how to play the drums. A friend showed me Rock Band and I was hooked. I play 2-3 times a week 2-4 hours at a time and even tho learning how to play the drums is sure a lot harder then I thought it would be I am slowly getting there. I am thrilled to see Rock Band 4 come out and have signed up for pre-order.

Here is my wish list for RB4.
More songs. any and everything you can get.
    Better search, preview and favorites.
Better ability to communicate with people online.
Better online experience period. More online options.
The ability to add, kick, search for players.

  • Hey Eric!
It was nice to meet you at PSX (Amplitude backer here)!

Firstly, I’m ecstatic that a new RB is coming (and soon!). Not only that, but Harmonix is pushing for legacy DLC/instruments! I love the direction you’re taking and that you’re no longer under MTVs thumb (self publish?)

After reading Polygon, a few things came to mind:

-Would having an online store for the peripherals make more sense logistically?

-Could there be an official wired cross-platform transceiver hub for all instruments? I know there’s big differences between the 4 platforms (fight stick/wheel owner here), but if translation is being done anyway…? Related, will the MIDI adapter for pro drums work?

-Will the new ps4 controllers be Bluetooth? Either way a USB port for a wired option would be great!

-As Alex said, new platforms allow for some new ideas and methods. Could there ever be a “subscription” for DLC songs(similar to zunepass or YouTube music)? Sharing tattoos/characters/challenges? A way to track (at least future) DLC across systems/platforms? New MP modes?

Regardless of these or if you respond, I will pre order and buy this game day 1 and wouldn’t hesitate to buy new peripherals. Rock on!

  • Thank you you bringing Rock Band back!!!!!

It would be amazing if there was be a way to transfer my DLC from XB360 to my PS4 ( A lot of people have jumped ship this generation.) I know it must be difficult but please try!

    Can’t wait.

  • Many of my fellow posters made statements about this, but I have yet to see an answer. Therefore, I will ask the question.
Will I be able to bring purchases from my Xbox 360 over? If this is not doable at launch, will that eventually be a possibility? I ask because I think you can pull it off in the sense that because it was purchased through the rock and store that eventually one would be able to get all of those songs.

  • theXsilentXchild

I can’t wait!!! I have every rock band game released for the ps3 and xbox. Had to rebuy them all when I came over to ps3 in 2010. If we can transfer our songs from the ps3 to the ps4 I’m gonna have to buy a bigger hard drive; ). I can’t wait! I’m going back now and playing through the games again. Hope you decide to do the track packs again as well. You have my pre order when it becomes available.

  • I don’t understand how people expect to be able to transfer purchases from their X360 to their PS4. Just curious, where did you guys get this idea from? There’s no other comparable service that does this. If you buy a song on itunes, can you then download it off the google play store? No, you can’t. It doesn’t matter if it’s the same song, you used a different service. I understand the frustration if you spent a bunch on the game before on DLC purchases. But I think this is the thing we need to accept and understand in regards to digital purchases is that even cross generation, assume that purchases won’t carry over. At least Harmonix has worked out transfers from PS3 purchases…. Gotta give them credit on that for sure.

  • you said ”All your previously purchased DLC, as well as on-disc soundtracks that you’ve previously exported (i.e. RB1, RB2, Lego, Green Day) will be supported in Rock Band 4”

My question is, if i have not yet exported my previous rock band games, when I bought rock band 4 I can export it to the game?? or it would be too late?

  • Big time bummer for me, I had all my DLC on x360 plus exported all the game discs, my library was about 700 tracks. Hard times, had to sell everything. Now a happy loyal PS user who sadly will not purchase this unless Harmonix can make a centralized RB account service that will recognize cross platform DLC. I can’t go back to playing RB and miss all those tracks, breaks my heart.

  • Perhaps a one time authorization of all previous DLC so you can port it to another system? That would be very similar to what R* did with the next-gen GTA5 release… I’m really hoping this can be done. I’ll be following along as news comes out, thanks for the updates!

  • Will ROCKBAND 4 be for the Ps4 or will it be for previous generations? Sorry you’re post had me confused and want to be sure it’s for PS4. If so I can’t wait to buy it.

  • @ killerblanks77

There are plenty of precedents on the matter. There are a lot of services out there that are not tied to any platform, despite the fact that you can buy content for those services through these platforms, and then having said content available on others.

As an example, I had an iPad some time ago, and bought many comic books through the Comixology app, which went through iTunes to manage purchases. Even if my comics were bought through iTunes, they are all available on Comixology website for me to read, and when I switched to Android, all my previously bought comics were available right there.

Also, many songs (if not most) bought on iTunes now are supposed to be DRM-free, meaning you can probably take the files and make them play on whatever device you have.

Personnaly, I think the biggest hurdle to this wouldn’t be a technological one. But rather, a licencing one. And contrary to what many might think, the probloem wouldn’t come from Microsoft. It would come from Sony. Microsoft got their money already from all the bought DLC. Sony probably wouldn’t let people download content of PSN that they didn’t bought on PSN.

  • Awesome !!! Finally we can rock on again !! Used to love this game !

  • Big supporter of Rock Band since the first (NoThru22 on the forums) and I have 1,687 songs on the Xbox 360. I am hoping you’ll work out some way to link accounts and give some sort of discount on rebuying the songs for PS4. I don’t really have any interest in buying an Xbone since they are blocking cross platform racing wheels.

  • Screw having dlcs compatible there pointless what about the instruments you can’t play the games if u don’t have the stuff to play them and will the game be made available for ps4 as well
