Shadow of the Beast on PS4: Beauty and Brutality

Hi PlayStation.Blog readers, it’s been a while since our last update on Shadow Of The Beast — our long silence has been because we’ve been working hard to turn the concept we showed last time into a reality. And, though we haven’t quite finished that journey yet, we wanted to take this chance to share with you some early shots from the game.

Shadow of the Beast

We talked a little in our previous blog entry about the impact that the original games had on us as kids. When our team started putting together the concepts for our take on Shadow of the Beast, one thing we kept coming back to was how important it was to us that we made sure that our game stirred up that same level of emotion, especially through the visually striking, alien landscapes of Karamoon.

The screenshots you see here are taken from the harsh, arid wasteland that is Karamoon’s desert. The balance between beauty and brutality has been a running theme for us while we’ve been building the game. Our main character, Aarbron, was forged by the evil Maletoth as a living weapon — and his journey through this beautiful, vibrant world is a savage one. We’ve tried to find ways to bring both sides of this juxtaposition to life to create a unique and intriguing setting for the gameplay to live within.

Alongside creating a range of sweeping vistas and strange creatures, we have also been busy refining the game’s core combat and platforming to try and find just the right blend to make a compelling experience for players.

It’s been a long road to get here (Especially if you are counting back to our original inspiration!) and we thank you for both bearing with us and taking the time to read about our progress. We hope to have more news to share with you before too long!

  • Thanks for the update! It looks like a beautiful game. Make it special and nice job!

  • This looks awesome! Kind of like a god of war/shadow of the colossus/metatron vibe! I hope they get all weird with it.

  • This update and the preview on Eurogamer are already better than the reveal!

Really excited to see this game running!

  • Keep up the hard work, It looks like it will be worth the wait!

  • Looks great! Keep up the great work

  • Keep up the great work guys! Had my eye on this one since it was announced at Gamescom couple years ago so glad to finally hear from you guys.

  • Remembers me of the good old Sega Genesis days.

  • Awesome. Want that game right now !!! Keep up the good work.

Kinda reminds me of Rygar for the PS2 which I loved. Just played through it once because I got a lot of games but I loved every minute of it. The simple gameplay didn´t stop it from beeing overwhelming addicting to me.

  • It reminded me of Shadow of the Colossus, some similarities such as environment, name and enemies stroke me. Have the Devs mentioned any direct relation or inspiration? I’m excited for this game. Keep up the good work. The art looks awesome and I would like to learn more about the story and gameplay.

  • Im looking forward to seeing more.

  • I loved this game as a kid! Thank you for making this game! Must say I miss the color pallet of the original though. Where are the purples, pinks? The beast looks weird, kinda like a tron reject……not sure about all that glowing stuff….you guys add that stuff cause he was hard to see? Fix the lighting and he won’t be. The beast’s animations are awesome, yet when it transitions to his free-fall animation it has a hard shift and it looks weird. Can’t say I love all the blood, it’s too comic and cartoonish atm. More brutal, kick and deadly, and I miss that punch sound from the original. (watched video from gamersyde). Fix this stuff you guys. You have to make original fans fall in love with this, and atm your close but not fully on target.

  • Can you say a system seller I sure can.

  • Look interesting. Can’t wait to see more on this.

  • Looks great. I’m just worried about length of the game and it having some original element in it. I have to wait to hear more, just a little skeptical atm.

  • Can’t wait. Thanks for the update.

  • Is this God Of War? He didn’t say much the game other than the environment and creatures. No story ,gameplay and not even the main character.

  • Oh my mistake it’s hard to read this because I’m on Spotfy .How embarrassing .

  • OH THANK THE GODS!!!! I was worried you had been canceled! Sony PLEASE make sure this comes to market! PLEASE.

  • Please bring some of the environments from the Amiga though…. will there be a GREEN level too? Flying dragons overheads? Floating eyeballs? Make it happen. :) And get an Amiga scene guy for the music. :)

    • Don’t worry, as the Heavy Spectrum team have grown up with game, they fully intend to make sure the PS4 game captures the spirit of Karamoon and all it’s varied creatures.

  • Vita is my platform of choice for side-scrollers (almost exclusively), so please consider bringing this to that as well!

Glad to finally give you all an update, thanks for all the positive comments….stay tuned for more in the near future.

  • trailer was very very very awesome, hope gameplay will be more cooler :)

  • Could be good, but yet another extremely brown game.

  • This is looking good. When should we expect it?

  • The soundtrack to the Amiga game was epic (it still haunts the recesses of my memory). I hope this new game comes with an updated version of those old tracks. I can practically hear the synth heartbeat effect.

  • You can easily access your preferred power options.

  • I remember get excited for this remake after seeing a CGI teaser like nearly two yrs ago. I’m glad it’s a real thing!

  • Can someone tell me about the soundtrack? Please please please try and get the original one. Thanks.

  • Just recently came across this post, seems like you guys have been working on this for a good while now huh? Well I just have to say that the visuals look VERY outdated……at first it looked like a PS2 game….then with a little more inspection it at least looks like a PS3 game…..sorry but you guys gotta step it up in the visual department of this game, WIP or not, I doubt the final product will ten fold the graphical aspects of this game -_-;

  • This game is looking epic, and right now it’s easily my most-anticipated PlayStation exclusive! My biggest hope for this game is that the soundtrack from the original game is used (updated, of course). The music was one of the biggest contributors to my love of the first game and its sequels. It looks like Heavy Spectrum got the aesthetic down perfect, though! Can’t wait to hear more!

It really is coming along lads, i’ve got the original on the amiga and rom file to play on the emulator but this remake is looking it’s best. I was hoping for some kind of first person open world where it would open the game up for more of a skyrim look but thinking now having it just like the platform is great. I presume the original music soundtrack is being used? such time and effort went into those soundtracks and would be a shame not to use them. They sounded great on the amiga but the super nintendo release, well the sound chip made it sound awful. Anyway all the best on making this game, all I need now is Moonstone to get realised and i’m sorted.
