The Elder Scrolls Online Beta Starts Tomorrow on PS4

Hello, PS4 Players! With the worldwide console launch of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on June 9th just a little over six weeks away, tomorrow we’re kicking off the pre-launch festivities with the console beta. This is a limited public beta — it will be our one beta before launch, and you must receive an invite to participate. Prepare to explore the vast expanses of Tamriel with your friends, game-subscription-free, for the first time on PS4!

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Read on to learn more about the ESOTU console beta test. Those invited will also receive additional details in the invite email. If you have questions about the beta test that aren’t covered below, please leave a comment — we’ll do our best to answer!

What is the ESOTU console beta test?

This is a limited, closed public beta. You must receive an invite to participate. We are sending invites to some of those who signed up for the ESOTU PS4 beta (not everyone who signed up will get an invite.)

When is the ESOTU console beta test?

The ESOTU console beta test opens on Thursday, April 23rd at 10:00 AM Eastern and ends on Monday, April 27th at 10:00 AM Eastern.

When will invites for the ESOTU console beta test be sent out?

Invites start going out today, so check your inbox. Don’t forget to check your spam box, too (Just in case!) We strongly advise that those invited start downloading the game as soon as possible.

Is there an NDA in place for the ESOTU console beta test?

Nope! There is no NDA in place for this beta test, so we encourage participants to share screenshots and livestream until your heart’s content.

Will my characters from beta carry over to the live version of ESOTU on PS4?

Unfortunately, no. We will be wiping all characters from the PS4 ESOTU console beta before the official worldwide launch on June 9th. If you are eligible for the PC/Mac to PS4 transfer, your characters will be waiting for you on the PS4 megaservers at launch. Otherwise, you will be creating new characters on launch day.

Is this a cross-console beta test?

No, PlayStation players will have their own megaservers — one for North America and one for Europe. For the beta (and at launch), you will be able to choose which one you want to play on. Characters are unique per megaserver.

How many megaservers are available during the PS4 ESOTU beta test? Can I choose which one I want to play on?

We will have two megaservers for PS4, one for North America and one for Europe. You may choose which one you want to play on.

Will we be playing the full game during the ESOTU console beta test, or only parts of it?

Everyone participating in the ESOTU console beta test will have access to the full console version of the game, not a slimmed down version.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Remember, there is no NDA for this event so we encourage everyone on PS4 to stream the beta over Twitch or UStream by using your PS4’s built-in share capabilities. We’ll be on the lookout for great streams to share!

In celebration of the upcoming PS4 launch on June 9th, we also have a handful of shiny new screenshots to share with you. You can see all these locales and more during the beta and at launch. Which one are you most looking forward to seeing yourself?

Don’t forget, the PS4 version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is also available for pre-order now on PlayStation Store.

We look forward to seeing many of you in Tamriel for the ESOTU console beta test, and in June at launch.

  • I have been waiting so ready to experience this game!

  • How do we sign up? Or are the invites handed out randomly to PSN users?

    • You had to have already signed up for the ESOTU console beta in order to be eligible for an invite into the upcoming beta test. Unfortunately, we are not taking any more sign-ups.

  • I got an email about a week ago asking me what console I preferred to play the beta on. Ps4 or Xbox. Does that mean I’m in the ps4 beta if i selected ps4? And will today be the only day you will be sending out emails? Also will we be allowed to stream the beta? Sorry for so many questions.

    • That survey was sent out to anyone who signed up for the console beta. That means you are eligible, yes, but not guaranteed an invite. Depending on how you answered, you may get an invite for the PS4 beta, Xbox One beta, or both if you indicated interest in both.

We will be sending out invites in batches throughout the day today. So if you don’t have an invite yet, don’t lose hope–you may get one later today.

There is no NDA for the beta, so you may livestream it (in fact, we encourage it!)

  • Is there any plan to extend date for the $20 account transfer from PC?
I just bought the game recently on PC, but I’d rather play on console… having to repurchase a $60 ($70 in Canada) is a bit prohibitive of that.

    • Unfortunately, we are not planning to extend the date for the PC/Mac to console transfer. In order to provide this option, we had to set a cut-off date, and that cut-off date was June 30, 2014.

  • Cool. Hoping I get an invite. I have had the CE on pre-order for quite some time now. ;)

  • This is the weirdest announcement. How do we apply for an invite?

  • Nice! I hope I get to check this out =) been teetering on it simply because it’s between 2 of my most anticipated games this year (Witcher 3 and Batman).

  • I guess now would be a good time to check my email.

  • As a pretty dedicated Final Fantasy XIV player this has me interested at the very least. With the wait for Heavansward now in full swing I’d be interested to give this beta a shot and see if it grabs me. I got the email asking me which platform I’d prefer to beta test the game on a week or so ago, hopefully that means I’ll get in.

Being that the game is segregated by platform is there an in game voice chat function?

  • beta sign-up link is too crowded
too bad i can’t get to try the beta

  • Thanks for making this post, but never coming here to tell us to that there even was an opportunity to sign up. Not surprising that no one reached out to us, though, considering that Bethesda truly hates console gamers.
Stop wasting your time on ESO. We know that your entire motivation for making it is because you thought it’d make a big pay day. Just focus on Fallout 4 and the next, proper Elder Scrolls game.

Anyone who is interested in playing an MMORPG on PS4, look no further than FFXIV. There is a 2-week free trial you can download, and your progress in the trial will carry over to the full game, should you decide to subscribe. Many of you are undoubtedly anti-subscription, just as I was, but the trial won me over. Give it a try. And be sure you read and watch reviews of ESO so you can see how inferior it is to FFXIV.

  • How about any buddy keys?

  • How can I know if I’m in the Beta? I have been an Elder Scrolls Online player since June 2014 and signed up for the beta and was asked preferences. I have been waiting for console to come out and to try it out for over a year and originally just wanted to buy it on PS4 but couldn’t wait any longer. I don’t mind starting fresh but I am only level 12 cause of having to stop at the end of last summer due to costs. Please let me know how I can participate in the game that will revolutionize MMOs.

    • If you signed up for the beta before we sent the preference survey, and you got and sent in the preference survey, you are eligible for the upcoming console beta. It doesn’t guarantee an invite, but you’re eligible. We’re sending out invites throughout today and tonight, so we’d recommend periodically checking your inbox (and spam folder, just in case.)

  • @pantheman16

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? “Bethesda truly hates console gamers”. If you typed that statement seriously you need to take a step back from the computer and just think about how dumb that paragraph you typed is. All you had to do was visit the ESO site anytime within the last 2 years to see where to sign up for the beta. I received an email the other day asking me what platform i preferred because I signed up a while ago. Don’t be so dramatic dude.

  • @pantheman

Oh and a couple more things from your post that need pointing out.

“We know that your entire motivation for making it is because you thought it’d make a big pay day.”
I’ve got news for you. The entire point of making any video game is to get a payday. It’s called business.

“Just focus on Fallout 4 and the next, proper Elder Scrolls game.”
It seems you don’t understand the difference between Bethesda the publisher and Bethesda Game Studios. The people making elder scrolls online is not the same team that is making Fallout4 and traditional elders scrolls games. So your comment makes no sense. Zenimax online studios is making ESO.

  • There was info on signing up for the beta way back here: https://blog.playstation.com/2014/01/28/the-elder-scrolls-online-on-ps4-your-questions-answered/ in January of last year.

  • I preordered this a year ago for PS4 and now I must search for my receipt.
I have heard so much the past year about this game not being that good.
I am willing to give Bethesda Soft a chance. I mean, they have been working on it for a year, unlike The Crew and Destiny(both of which need major updates).
If I were in the Beta I would spend days exploring every corner of Tamriel and providing feedback relevant to improving anything honestly wrong.

  • I just signed up now. Is there still a possibility I’ll be able able to be invited to the beta even though I signed up late?

    • Unfortunately, no. We aren’t accepting sign-ups for the console beta anymore. (We’ll be taking down the sign-up page shortly to avoid any further confusion.)

  • I signed up for this beta what seems like a year ago and didn’t get an invite.. dang :( .. I’m a little salty.

  • I will hope to get the invite today, been looking forward to this game since announcement.

On another note, megaserver is a silly word.

  • @14 – You have clearly never played a Bethesda game on PS3 then. Their lack of support for their broken releases is unforgivable. If they could remain as profitable by releasing games only on PC, they would. They love their PC community. It’s where they began and where they would have stayed if they could. If you don’t understand this, then don’t comment.

“I’ve got news for you. The entire point of making any video game is to get a payday. It’s called business.”
Uh.. no. Good games come from passion. No one thinks “How can I make a lot of money? I know! I’ll go to school and devote my life to game development!”. People choose that field because it’s what they love. Of course they don’t work for free, but making money is not supposed to be the ONLY goal.

  • “It seems you don’t understand the difference between Bethesda the publisher and Bethesda Game Studios. The people making elder scrolls online is not the same team that is making Fallout4 and traditional elders scrolls games. So your comment makes no sense. Zenimax online studios is making ESO.”

How little you understand. Bethesda commissioned this game, genius. Same as EA commissioned Hardline just so they could bank on the franchise while DICE makes the next, actual Battlefield game; The same way that Sony commissioned Sumo Digital to make LBP3.

Step out of your fanboyism and gain some perspective. Don’t post comments and create arguments when you don’t understand what you’re talking about, JUST because you want to play the game. You have no strength in any of your arguments. Do yourself a favor and just don’t speak in public, and go play the beta.

  • Very cool :-) I haven’t preordered it yet because I had to buy a new TV (Sony of course) so not sure if I can get it at launch. If not I will definitely be getting it before the end of the year. I am a huge Elder Scrolls fan, hope I get an invite to the beta.

  • Pretty sure I missed the Beta sign up for consoles (didn’t think I’d be able to have a PS4 at the time), but good luck to everyone else! I enjoyed the PC Beta.

  • Will there at least be an Alpha/demo for everyone at some point?

After all the massive negative press this game has received since launch, I doubt anyone would pay money for it without having the chance to try it out first.

I’m sure we all want it to be good, but there’s a reason the console versions were delayed by a year, it’s gone free to play, and the bad press.

  • Damn there was a PS4 beta sign up how on Earth did I miss that? I didn’t see anything about. =(
Really sucks I was quite active in the PC beta and I am used to sending in bug reports.

  • Am I still eligible to get invited even though I only answered the survey today? I would have answered sooner but I had no clue I even received it.

    • Just checked on this for you, Enderfreaks. We performed a pull of final participants on Monday morning, so the survey would have needed to be completed by then.

  • @27 – See the reply to @2.

  • @28- That didn’t even slightly answer my question. I had signed up before. My question was regarding the survey sent out on the 10’th of april.

  • I signed up a long, long time ago. Back when you were first taking applications for the Beta. I hope I get mine, I did receive a message a couple of weeks ago saying the Beta was coming soon, so maybe I will.

  • @25 in the meantime, see if there are twitch channels where the pc version is being streamed. I would not let the press’ opinion influence you, since they rarely talk about any mom being good. I thought the PC beta showed a lot of promise, but didn’t play past that since my laptop could barely handle it. Best bet for you is to read opinions of users who play it or watch streams like I suggested first.

  • I was hoping to get in the beta because i want to try the game before i buy it for both the PC and PS4. I sign in yesterday but they said it takes 72 hours to get back to me.

  • I got the email asking if I was still interested in the beta, but it wasn’t weeks ago. Just a few days ago, and yes, I said I was. But I have had the CE on pre-order since January 2014, so it sure is taking you Beths a long time. Geesh.

I hope I love it at least half as much as I loved Skryim, which was my first plat for PS3.

What pantheman says is partially true. Beth has always much preferred their PC fans and that was made very clear to me when I played Skyrim on the PS3 and the X360. That fact is well-known. But, pantheman, you are still being a little naive about business. Corporations exist only to make money, no matter what they make, from paper clips to video games. In fact, it’s their legal obligation to their shareholders. Profit is the most important thing, and not just a small factor. However, most people enter this industry for love, that is also true. So there is constant friction and often bad results because of that dichotomy.

No matter. I love gaming for the fun, and I have a lot of fun and I hope TESO will be really fun.

  • @pantheman you do realize that Bethesda published games are buggy on PC too. I had just as many issues with Rage, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls on my pc. I dig Bethesda games but they have consistently been buggy on and off the pc. Dishonored was the last game I played by them so it’s been a few years for me, but that game wasn’t buggy due to it being developed on a solid engine. I do agree it would of been nice to have a post here, but obviously it wasn’t necessary due to the amount of people who still signed up. One issue I have with what you said was that they should focus on Fallout. Bethesda has multiple studios, id is focusing on Doom, zenimax online is focusing on ESO, and Bethesda Game Studio is focusing on Fallout. This team isn’t even located in the same state as the team that works on Fallout or the Elder Scrolls

  • Don’t forget me please

  • @rainwater Watching streams for a MMO doesn’t do anything for me. Either I play it and see how much fun it is, or I don’t.

Streams will show me (assuming the stream is good) if it looks pretty, that’s about it.

How it feels to play the game is something I don’t get from that, and it’s the only thing I care about since MMO graphics are never really important.

  • Oh and I have seen the PC version and hated what I saw, but hopefully they’ve improved the game for console release.

  • I signed up for beta a year ago and didn’t getpreference survey. What gives

  • I purchased PC copy the day it released with 100% plan to go ps4. Signed up for that beta. Nothing. I never received any kind of notice. Not sure I will play PS 4 version now I am so frustrated by not being allowed into beta after all the $ and waiting. Good luck to all anyways

  • @21 pantheman

First, you claim I have no strength in my arguments when your the one saying Bethesda literally “hates” console gamers. What kind of idiotic statement is that. I’d like you to address that comment first.

“Uh.. no. Good games come from passion. No one thinks “How can I make a lot of money? I know! I’ll go to school and devote my life to game development!”. People choose that field because it’s what they love. Of course they don’t work for free, but making money is not supposed to be the ONLY goal.”

My original comment was from publisher perspective. That is the only goal for a game publisher is to make money as a business. Not the individuals who work for them of course.

  • “How little you understand. Bethesda commissioned this game, genius. Same as EA commissioned Hardline just so they could bank on the franchise while DICE makes the next, actual Battlefield game; The same way that Sony commissioned Sumo Digital to make LBP3.”

In your original comment that I responded to you said they should focus on making the next fallout/elderscrolls instead. It made it seem like you were refferring to Zenimaxonline studios and not Bethesda the Publisher which is why I responded the way I did. I perfectly understand how studios work.

“You have clearly never played a Bethesda game on PS3 then”
Actually I have the platinum on skyrim, beat oblivion and fallout3 as well. Clearly I have played them. You said “lack of support” but they brought in Sony engineers to help them fix the game with numerous patches. If they didn’t care at all they never would have even patched it.

Last thing, I’m not a blind fanboy, I just know the difference between being an idiot claiming devs hate console gamers, and viewing things from an unbiased point of view. Have a nice day sir.

  • i pre-ordered the game on the psn store will i be in the beta

  • ridiculous! the beta sign up was more then a year! in that time i wasn’t know about this game. grrrrrrr

  • Hello Jessica! Please tell the Bethesda overlords that a SKYRIM: The Apology edition Remaster on PS4 will make them alot of septims.

    Thank you :)

  • I’m a little disappointed because I signed up for updates for PS4 months ago (before ESO had been released for PC/Mac) and i’ve yet to see any info on a beta via email. this is before I found out there was going to be one starting tomorrow and yet I may not even receive a code. This doesn’t make sense to me. I would hope i’d receive one.

  • Still signed up even thought they arent taking anymore invite, just incase they change their mind and wanna stress test the server… who knows lol.

  • Oh my god, @PantheMan16 is still at it. First complaining every time they released DLC for LBP2, and now whining about how much Bethesda hates everyone. Like do you have any chill whatsoever or is complaining the only thing you’re good at? You’re seriously one of the most annoying people on the blog next to the guy that keeps asking for the Disegea 2 sales.

  • So it’s my understanding that you have to pay a subscription fee as well as have PS+ in order to play? If so that’s kinda harsh. Also i signed up for this beta a year ago but because i didn’t see the survey until today i’m not eligible? that’s super harsh :(

  • Just got my beta invite a few minutes ago. If you are still waiting for yours there is still hope!

  • Cool, i just got in. I’ll be trying it out asap!
