The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited Comes to PS4 in Two Weeks

We’re excited to welcome PS4 players to ESOTU in just two weeks. When we began development of the console version of the game, we knew we wanted it to feel like it was developed for the PS4, not just another port. With integrated voice chat, a completely redesigned UI, full PSN connectivity and controller support, PS4 players should feel right at home in Tamriel.

Today, we’d like to share some details (and some fun things, too!) to help you prepare for launch. Thank you for supporting us through this journey—we hope to see you in Tamriel on June 9th!

This is ESOTU

Over the past few weeks, we’ve released the first two ‘This is The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited’ videos. In them, we delved into the freedom and choices that shape your experiences in Tamriel, and all of the activities you can enjoy in ESOTU with friends. Today, we’re pleased to present the final video in the series, all about exploration in Tamriel. You can watch all three videos, including the latest one, below. We hope you enjoy it!

Launch Day Timing

On June 9th, everyone who has purchased The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will be able to log in at midnight, local time. This means that every hour, players from a new time zone will gain the access to play ESOTU on console, beginning with UTC+14.

The Quick Chat System

At launch, the console versions of ESOTU will feature a Quick Chat system. This system will allow you to select from a collection of premade phrases to quickly communicate with other players around you. You set them to your shortcuts just like you would a consumable item. Once you’ve assigned the Quick Chat phrase to your shortcut wheel, you simply hold down Right on the D-Pad, then use the R-Stick to choose one.

When you use a Quick Chat phrase, it will appear as a text chat bubble, visible to those around you along with an emote. Below are a few screenshots of the Quick Chat system in action.

You can have a total of eight Quick Chat phrases on your shortcut bar at a time. There are currently 22 Quick Chat phrases you can choose from, all of which are localized into English, French, and German. We do plan to add more over time, based upon the requests of the ESOTU community.

If you have any questions about ESOTU’s console launch or the plans leading up to it, please post them in the comments. We’ll do our best to answer!

  • Finally this is coming.

  • I’m not really a big MMO fan other than being able to drop into Destiny for under a half hour for some quick fun. I was however, a massive fan of Skyrim. I’m interested in Elder Scrolls Online, but would I be able to enjoy it playing it by myself without the obligations or responsibility that a larger MMO usually encompasses?

    • Some content does require a group (group dungeons and Trials,) but none of it is required to play to max level and enjoy the full story. Many of our current players choose to play solo and enjoy the experience. There will always be other players around, of course, but choosing to explore and quest by yourself is a play-style we’ve designed the game to support.

  • Will there be any sort of playable trial period like many MMOs? Unlikely to buy this without being able to try it for a couple days or even weeks first.

    • Not at this time, Qu3st39, though once you purchase the game there is no subscription fee.

  • I heard this game is more like a Single-player based mmo with some mulitplayer features in it. Which actually interests me more than a standard mmo. Not sure if it’s true though.

  • For those asking about playing solo, I play the PC version solo and enjoy it. Of course as Jessica pointed out there are activities designed for a group that you won’t be able to do.

The big adjustment is that nothing you do is persistent of course, unlike in Skyrim or something similar. If you kill an enemy s/he needs to respawn so the next player can also kill him/her.

Personally I can’t wait to play this on my PS4.

  • Good idea with regards to launch day timing! Hopefully that makes it as smooth an experience as possible for all.

  • Was thinking of buying this until I saw the trophy for becoming emperor which seems like it’s going to be impossible for 99.9% of people. We have jobs, families and lives outside gaming. Here is one of many forum for trophy hunters disappointed with your trophy choices:

    http://www.playstationtrophies.org/forum/the-elder-scrolls-online/266599-emperor.html

Devs these days still don’t understand the value of a decent, realistic trophy list as if trophies were only an afterthought. They aren’t for a lot of people.

  • Good idea to make the game subscription fee. Curious to see how this will be received since on console for a RPG I think it’s the first of its kind.

  • Rapturesassassin

Cant wait for this game i pre-ordered this game online. Just one question though when can we start preloading

    • Preloading will likely be available next week. We’ll let everyone know on the ESOTU social media channels as soon as the preload is available.

  • That video really sold me. I’m loving the fact that there are no sub fees. Glad to see this gem coming the the PS4!

  • I can’t wait to play this, very excited! Can we choose character names or are we stuck with our PSN names in game?

    • You are able to choose a name for your character, but your PSN name is what people will see when you’re running around Tamriel, chatting, in a group, in a guild, etc.

  • The game is 69.99
    How much is the subscription?
    Any other hidden charges?

  • Hi Jessica,

First of all you and your team are Awesome or You guys and gals Rock!!! Thank you for everything you do for the community.

I’m very excited for this game. I will be playing this for years to come.

Can you guys and gals please bring more Dynamic Themes to the PS4? Also how about bring some cool ESO Avatar pictures for people to display on their PS4 account?

I hope you will allow guild housing and also personal housing in the game down the road. I loved how in Skyrim you can build your own home and decorate it. You can offer decorations for free and also in the Crown Store.

    Cheers!!!

    Rob aka Graf

    • Thanks for the kind words, GrafUlrich88! We are working on a dynamic ESOTU theme for the PS4, and it looks amazing. We can’t wait to show it to everyone! As soon as it’s available, we’ll let everyone know via our official social media channels.

    • Hi SkillsLink! Happy to hear you tune into ESO Live and enjoy it. :)

“Will the day one patch for this game aim to resolve some art/ fram rate issues we’ve seen in PS4 beta?”

Yes! We’ve done quite a bit of polishing, optimization, and bug fixing since the PS4 beta. The texture issue you mentioned, specifically, is fixed.

  • When this was first announced for PS4 (years ago?) I preordered it and a PS4 at the same time. Like many, I have waited a long time for this. However, with all the delays, I bought Mac version in hopes of switching to the PS4 version when it comes out. However, now I am unwilling to pay for another full copy of the game just for the convenience of playing on the couch. If you guys give us long time supporters a way to get on the console for less than full price, I will do it. (Also like many others, I did not see that the transfer offer made a year ago was for such a short period of time. That should be offered again)

  • I know the title says online, but, can you play offline? I bought destiny just to find out it’s online only. What a letdown.

    • Hi juryman48,

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is online and does require an internet connection to play. There is not an offline mode, however you can certainly play solo if you like (there will always be other people around, of course.)

  • Hi @Jessica Folsom, I’m super excited to jump (back in) to ESO. I have a question, however, that I’ve yet to get answers on. I purchased ESO Imperial Edition for my PC at launch in April of last year. Sadly, my PC had a sever hardware failure and it wasn’t until early December, 2014, that I was able to rebuild it. That said, I created my character and began playing…but I want to transfer that character over to PS4 now to play with my friends who had held out for the console release. Am I completely SOL considering there was an incredibly harsh cutoff for this transfer request? It’s enough to make me quit altogether, but I’d rather not jump ship if I don’t have to.

  • While i did play a bit on the PC version, i really cannot wait to play this on the PS4. I just rather play it on there plus all my friends will be playing it on there as well. its a fun game and i just cant believe we are finally getting it. Sadly though i missed out on the transfer, but its good to play this game refresh!

  • I can’t wait. Now if we could just get our codes from bethesda for those of us who took advantage of the pc-ps4 upgrade transfer, I’d be good. Seems like its taking a long time to get those to us. Hope it doesn’t screw us for Launch. Anyone else do the transfer for $20?

  • @23 I would have, but I missed the incredibly short window.

  • Will there be guild chat and voice chat at lunch or that wheel thing u use to chat

  • I am looking forward to this. I have Social Anxiety (yes its real, its very common) so I am hoping I can make a few friends in Tamriel.

  • Jessica, the “quick chat” system seems like a band-aid fix that remains utterly useless for complex communication.

    How are we:
    – supposed to sell our wares outside of guilds?
    – supposed to form said guilds without messages to recruit?
    – supposed group together for large (12 man) content? LFG is not efficient or sufficient, since it still has problems and only groups by Vet/ lvl range.
    – supposed to alert people of Dolmens/ PVP objectives or other zone-based activities?

Sit there and shout with our mics? That’s what you and ZoS are proposing, which is patently absurd. There’s not even any “whisper” or telling system! Is there a plan to rectify this? I’ve never heard of an MMORPG that launched without a proper chat system. And Destiny does not count, that’s an entirely instance based game and has none of the nuances that ESO or MMORPGs possess. I sincerely hope that you and the development team rethink your stance on communication. What’s embarrassing is that the game was delayed for over a year and its still launching without the most basic of features.

P.S. To those of you who have not played the PC version, its still riddled with bugs. Buyer beware.

  • Furthermore, the issue with “premade phrases” is that they’re not zone wide. Take trading for example. People need to say things like: Grain Solven X 50 at 650 gold each.” I’m pretty sure there’s no premade phrase for that. And there’s no way for a potential buyer to even whisper back.

Which makes canned phrases useless unless someone is standing next to you. Might as well be talking to an invisible friend, which is what people will be doing 90% of the time.

  • I have my preorder since some time … But i have decided to let PS Plus to go away.
Since the game name says:Online … Is PS plus subscription required in order to join game servers and play game normally ? Tnx

    • A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, yes. There is no subscription associated with the game itself, though.

  • Will the preload actually be the game or will I have to wait another 6 hours like some previous titles?

  • preordered the imperial edition off the site and so excited for the game only game ive been waiting for but I have to admit the quick chat idea is gonna be rough talking to others in game unless u can type in other stuff as well like DCUO and Warframe on consoles do a good job of it

  • I’ve heard that the day one patch is going to be massive. Truth?

Also, for digital purchasers, will the day one patch be available the same time as the preload?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

I bought the digital PS4 version and I intend to play the French version on the North American megaserver (I’m from Québec). Is there a way to tell my PS4 to download only the French audio files ? Can I do this even if my PS4 is set to English language ?

I usually prefer to play in original English (translations are usually bad in video games) but I’ll play with a friend who does not understand English very well.

    Thank you !

  • I heard that you can mix races. Is that true. also, will we be able to buy our own houses like in heath fire. that would be perfect.

  • Hello Jessica!

While I think the text wheel is a step in the right direction; however, I am still concerned about a lack of true text chat.

How are large guilds supposed to handle communication in this game? My guild is currently at 77 members (http://alessianorder.enjin.com/home); I can’t imagine the noise in our guild chat when we have many on at once trying to just socialize. Or is the intent of the game not to have guilds socialize on a larger scale, and all conversation must be strictly limited to what is needed only? That is not good for the guild community or the game community.

I am also confused why it ZOS’ policy seems to be that console gamers cannot use a keyboard; hasn’t FFXIV:ARR already proven this wrong definitively? My FC in that game was full of PS3/PS4 players sitting on their couch using a controller and USB keyboard.

  • @Qu3st39 actually both Gamefly and Redbox will have ESO for rent. Which to me at least rather suprising!

  • Ashigaru_Musashi

What does the quick chat consist of in terms of trading, buying or selling? Are you able to quick chat a “Looking to buy X” with X being an item you can link or something? How will that work?

  • @OsCGungslinger

Chatboxes breed trolls, since the PC version already supprts , text chat. Why not play the PC version. IF this game ever gets text chat support? I will quit! I have had many games ruined with text chat:[ Because of the non-stop chat abuse. Personally I find VC chat to better, when trying to cordernate a large group. The downside is , gamers on VC don’t really talk outside of the game. Which is unfortunate :[ Kinda “kills” the whole social part of the mmo. And even IF I could turn off text chat, it’s still exists. I have seen the abuse, and it’s toxic and ugly:[ No matter how thick skinned you are, plus it really “kills” the whole emersion of a game. Ok, you want text chat, make it a payed option. Because , I simply don’t want “text chat ” messing up my game play.

  • @Ashigaru_Musashi

You could use, PM messing or take a screen shot or link in a PSN Pm.

  • @Ravenous74

I do too and your correct, Social Anxiety is a real thing and quite common. I also have a “typing dyslexia ” because on my anxiety:[ It’s difficult making and keeping friends because of Social anxiety. I hope your getting treatment ? Because it can be treated. And I wish you the best of luck:] Even though , right now I don’t do allot of onlne stuff. Your more then welcome to add me to your PSN friends list. And maybe , we’ll meet in game.

    Peace ;]

P.S. I think I had previously met you though the Bethesda Blog, because someone simular posted the samething. IF not, I apologize for the inconvenience :]

  • xXFSUDeadpoolXx

Can’t wait for this game to drop ive waited for 2 year’s for this game to drop on the PS4.

  • I’m still waiting on TES VI. I hate MMO’s.

  • Proximity Chat?

  • Stupid Bethesda commissioning stupid cash-grabs from studios that have no business making an Elder Scrolls game. Is it not enough to make their own games? Do they not think that Fallout 4 or that the next ES game will sell millions upon millions of copies? They never needed to do this. No disrespect to ZeniMax, but would we want someone other than ND or Sucker Punch making Uncharted or inFAMOUS? Heck no. Look how LBP 3 turned out. I literally hear no one at all talking about it, and when I did, it was just to complain about how the game was buggy and how it never delivered on the promise of the interesting (gimmicky) characters.

  • Wow please answer I messaged support already but got no useful advice. If I go into a german game store and pre order esotu, when I take it home to play and my ps4 is in English will esotu also be completely in English??? Looked everywhere for info but I cannot pre order intill I get confirmation!!! Thanks

    • All three supported languages in ESOTU (English, French, and German) are available with the game, regardless of where you live or the version you get. What language file the game accesses when you load it up is determined by your system language.

  • @Hooligantuan, yes proximity chat and it works quite well.

  • Hi I just wanted to say Thank You to ESOTU for releasing my most anticapated games of this year on my birthday. And for a bigger present you should let me win that ESO ps4 lol. But I was curious if while playing we can still be in a psn party chat and what kinda of communication aside from quick chat button will we have ? Thanks again awesome gift :) ;)

  • Ashigaru_Musashi

@SlayerOfGames Oh I guess there’s still that. Yet it still seems limited, though I guess you can use voice chat to call out “Hey, I’m buying X if anybody is selling?”
But I’m not even sure how far voice chat goes, where in PC zone chat is pretty far, as well as the other chats. Forgive me for I haven’t played the beta for consoles or anything so I’m pretty ignorant as to how this may go.

  • I know you said people will always be in the session with me but can they just come up and kill me or is there something to stop that from happening?

    • Players of opposing alliances will not appear in your home alliance areas. Cyrodiil, where the Alliance War takes place, is the only place in the game where PVP happens. You could play through the entire game and never enter Cyrodiil if you wish. None of the main story takes place there.

  • @Savages4Blood

Don’t worry. Player versus player (PvP) action is restricted to one area on the world map (Cyrodiil, at the center). In all other provinces, no player can attack you. You can choose to completely ignore the PvP aspect of the game (many people do) and never set foot in Cyrodiil.

  • Dear, Jessica

I would like to ask few questions.

    – Can I party with friends together to finish every story and side quests throughout ESO? Because I would like to play with friends together from the beginnIng of the game. Are my friends will achieve exactly the same goals as mine and don’t need to repeat the same quest again on their own?
    – How does the party system works ? Do I get the same loot items and experience as my party members? And What is the maximum party member in 1 party?

Thank you in advance. I am looking forward to buy this game on ps4 :).

  • Is it true that if you have pre ordered the game you can choose any race and join any alliance?
