Ratchet & Clank on PS4: Where Past and Future Meet

Hey everyone. We know Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac Games, and PlayStation fans have been waiting to get a glimpse of Ratchet & Clank for PS4. We’re excited to bring you that first look today — ahead of its playable debut on the showfloor of E3 next week.

In this trailer, you’ll see a few glimpses of footage from the film, and then your first-ever look at gameplay footage directly from the game coming exclusively to PS4 in Spring 2016. Check it out.

We knew early on that we didn’t want to just up-res Ratchet & Clank for PS2. We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank on PS4 as a “re-imagining” of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story (as seen in the film). We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 games while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.

We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original — but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more… all constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of PS4. Throw in James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, and you have a new beginning.

The fresh start means we changed up the arsenal quite a bit as well. As always with Ratchet & Clank games, you battle your enemies with an out-of-this-world arsenal. In the PS4 version of Ratchet & Clank, the majority of the arsenal is made up of weapons that weren’t in the original game. That means both new weapons and fan-favorite tools of destruction from the Ratchet & Clank Future series will fill out Ratchet’s kit. From the brand new Pixelizer (which transforms enemies into explosive 8-bit pixels) to franchise favorites like the dance-party-inducing Groovitron and wise-cracking robotic bodyguard Mr. Zurkon, Ratchet & Clank’s arsenal has never been better.

Ratchet & Clank

When we were asked recently to come up for a special bonus for fans that support Ratchet & Clank on PS4 by pre-ordering it, we went back to the list of our favorite weapons that we hadn’t yet brought to the game. In the end, it was a no-brainer, and I’m ecstatic to say that when you pre-order the game, you’ll get access to one of my all-time favorite weapons from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando… The Bouncer. The Bouncer launches a bomb that releases a plethora of tiny homing bombs that bounce towards targets. One of the most effective and spectacular Ratchet & Clank weapons ever.

We couldn’t be more excited to debut Ratchet & Clank on PS4 and the silver screen next Spring. Help Ratchet and Clank save the galaxy for the first time, again!

If you have questions, we’ll do our best to answer them in the comments below.

  • My arsenal is up and ready! Come at me bruh =|

  • So is this actually a reboot just based more off of the movie, because you guys at one point made it sound more complicated than that? Like maybe the movie does not actually reboot the franchise and the characters realize the movie is just that or was that just something for an early preview? Either way you have my attention.

    • This is a new game, we definitely took elements from the original game, but also many elements from the Future series and otherwise. It’s a very new experience and not just a remaster

  • how can i pre order?

  • First R and C next Sunset Overdrive on the PS4? make it happen captain!

  • YES!!! How about a Collector’s Edition?

  • What a gorgeous and fun looking game. Amazing work Insomniac.

  • Yes, I love the franchise. A Crack in Time ranks among my top 10 ps3 games of all time.

  • thank you insomniac thank you so much you just made my week with this unveiling .
i played all the ratchet games because i love quality platformers thank you for your support for the platforming genre and specifically ratchet , i think you love ratchet just as much as we do which fantastic i will pre order the game .
by the way my favorite ratchet games were up your arsenal and a crack in time the rest were nothing less in quality its just because i loved those two more for some reason .

    • thank you for the kind words and all of your support. it means a lot to us

    • I agree too. Ratchet is my go to favorite game franchise. There is so much replay value to the games. ACiT was my first platinum. I’m working on collection now! I have them all.

    • PLEASE tell SEGA to let INSOMNIAC HANDLE the NEXT SONIC the Hedgehog game, okay?

    • @hypersackboy
hahaaha i will tried my best to tell sega lets hope they figure it out themselves :)

  • I’m going to pre-order this without a PS4!!
It’s about time to get a PS4. They should have bugs out and new model by then. My first game for PS3 was ToD now my first game for PS4 will be R&C

  • Well, colour me excited! Played every game in the series and have enjoyed every one – fully expect this to be the best yet.

  • I am in loooveeeeee
    Favorite game series ever is finally getting another game :3 Thank god because the port of the first game to ps3 had a lot of issues aside from just being super outdated in the graphics department ;-;

  • i saw the gameplay this morning and was smiling so hard omg im so excited for the game and the movie
    KINDA

  • I was excited when this (and the movie somewhat) was announced initially, but this gameplay has me sold. I’ve been with the series since the stars, and the only games I really didn’t care too much for were All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault…so, I guess I’m a fan of the series?

    Can’t wait for Spring 2016…

  • Any infomation on pricing? Is it going to be £54 or £49? I’m definitely pre-ordering though!

    • not sure the specific EU band pricing, but it’s $39.99 in the US

    • Wait, what? It’s only $40, like Sly 4?

It’s going to be a full game, right? I know that the series needs another entry point, but it’s been six years since the last full “true” R&C game…

Regardless, this gameplay has me sold. The post mentioning that it was adding planets just made me think that it would actually be longer than the original game.

    • Into the Nexus was not six years ago. It may have been shorter, but it was also half the price. It was every bit as amazing as the rest of the Future games.

    • But it only lasted six hours. I replayed it three times, but I still would’ve loved to see another half to the story, such as how they catch Vendra. It was still great, but that doesn’t change the fact that the last full R&C experience was ACiT. A4O and FFA were interesting deviations, and ItN was great, but disappointing in length.

Thankfully, lower down it was confirmed that the game will be 10-12 hours long, so this shouldn’t be a problem.

  • Looking incredible!
Gonna miss the Ryno 5. That gun is the greatest.

  • Wow I just saw the 8 minutes gameplay video: WOW!!! It looks absolutely gorgeous, just like a pixar movie.

  • One of the great franchises of the last two console generations, looking forward to a third! Also, thank you for bringing back Mr. Zurkon.

  • Does the $39.99 price tag mean this won’t be a full-length campaign? In other words, will it be more like Nexus’s length than A Crack in Time’s? I want to pre-order but the low price, oddly enough, is giving me pause.
    Very excited either way! Thanks!

  • OMG the game looks too good, those graphics are mind-blowing,ha nice another true PS4 game. And damn good idea with the Pixelizer…I just loved it.The game looks fantastic indeed,I can’t wait to see more about it.

But pre-order stuff really?….are you serious?…that’s not how you show your game. You guys are lucky that that trailer makes the pre-order bonus insignificant.

    • What’s it matter if they have a pre-order bonus? What matters is game quality which, as you said, is extremely high. And it’s one gun. A. Single. Gun. Not “story missions”, not new game modes, a single gun.

People need to drop the pitchforks, man.

  • Hi
Is there going to be a special/ limited edition of the game like a crack in time did?
    Thanks ;)

  • I am beyond ecstatic!

  • Insomniac… Well… and PSBlog… IT SHOULDN’T BE THE PIXILATOR, IT SHOULD BE THE VOXELATOR. Pixel = 2D, Voxel = 3D. Has Adam Sandler already corrupted y’all?

  • Awesome. Will it be a full 60$ release or a shorter 30$ release like into the Nexus?

  • So excited about having more Ratchet and Clank! Being a $40 game, what should we expect as far as the scope of the game? Crack in Time size, or Into the Nexus size?

  • Can you guys stop announcing everything before E3? You’re ruining the potential for great announcements at the show!

Still, games looks great though :)

    • If this is what they’re giving away now then imagine what they must be holding back, well I hope anyways. This is the only time of the year I’d say these words but, I can’t wait for Monday.

  • Will there be a special collectors or limited edition?

  • FINALLY!!! *-*

  • To have a version of the original game with the RPG mechanics, much better controls, and Ratchet voiced by the voice actor that has voiced him in every game since then is great. The revamped levels and gorgeous visuals is a very nice cherry on top.

  • Looking great! The motion blur and DoF effects especially are top notch.
Is the game by any chance going to be supersampled or using more typical AA methods?

  • This looks AWESOME. Currently replaying Ratchet and Clank Trilogy on Vita. Can’t wait for this new adventure.

  • Is the Tesla Claw back? That was my favorite. It would be a shame to leave out classic guns like that but have the Groovitron and Mr Zurkon for the billionth time. Gotta be honest, the appeal of both weapons is wearing thin after so many games.

At least give Zurkon all new lines and get rid of the old ones, if I have to hear “Mr Zurkon does not need bolts, his currency is pain” one more time I’m going to scream.

  • I have to say that this game has become my most anticipated title of next year. And that is not a hyperbolic statement. I have nothing but fond memories of the franchise since it first released, and I’m sure this game will be no exemption.

Super excited to see all of the unlocks, extras, and most importantly; The Skill Points!! Between this and the movie, next spring is shaping up to be phenomenal!

  • I’m buying this, no ifs ands or buts about it I love this series, I have two of the three limited edition posters framed on my wall that you guys did for the 10th anniversary (wasn’t fast enough to snag the last one dammit). however I can’t do it just yet without knowing if you guys have any sort of collectors editions planned, if not I’ll pre-order this second on PSN!

  • All these trips down memory lane make me think that consoles themselves are nostalgic. Are they?

  • SonicTheNanobot2

So is this replacing the original in terms of story? I wonder where ratchet will go from here, if they’ll continue the story from this or if we’ll ever get to see what clank’s planning with that dimensionator.

  • Oh wow…those graphics. Pixar-quality. Love me some R&C so I can’t wait for this.

  • This looks good enough that I wouldn’t mind for it to be a reboot. It probably depends on the performance, but given how overstuffed the franchise became, having a simplified “new trilogy” (This game introduces Nefarious, so a ToD remake/imagining could serve as the time that he’s away before an ACiT remake/imagining) could be pretty nice. While ItN did leave things open, I’d almost rather see this happen instead.

That said, I had been uncertain about the movie, given what the studio did to Heavenly Sword and Sly. Thankfully, this looks great, and the game looks even better! Instant pre-order, especially since it’s been so long since ACiT!

  • Release at 30 June 2016?

    http://i.imgur.com/xufR4kV.png

  • Wow, this game look absolutely beautiful! Looks like a Pixar film. Can’t wait for this!

  • Did I dream up an Into the Nexus port on the Vita or is that still happening?

    • I think it was in the cards, but got canned at the last minute.
Likely issues with getting the engine running how they like it.

Sorta wanna see FFA go on sale again.
I missed out on the retail release. >-<

  • This looks incredible! (Especially the 9min video!)
Will it run at 60fps, have stereoscopic 3D or Morpheus support?
Any chance of some basic multiplayer play?

  • I know I may be in the minority, but I still enjoy fantasy fun action games that aren’t M. ND didn’t want to continue J&D and wanted to more realistic games UC, and gritty mature TLoU. Batman is going M. But I appreciate you guys demonstrated with future trilogy and this title, that you can still have good story, great graphics, and fun with R&C. It is great for whole family. My wife, kids, and I all play R&C. It’s such a unique game that we all have a different style. My wife is the one who skips every gun so she can get RYNO and go blazing!!!

  • Also can we get an update to let us to local competitive with FFA? My kids and I have been wishing since day one to do competitive against each other. We can only do it with Vita now, but split screen for home would be sweet!!!

  • Does anybody here know any websites in Canada that has this for pre order with the bonus

  • Looks neat, gonna have to start saving for a PS4 now.

You guys gonna try and insert a joke about how Ratchets voice cracked between the sequels?

Somewhere out there someone thinks the switch on VAs was a bad idea.
They also break eggs then put them back on the shelf so bah.

Odd thing with the mash up of weapons.
As long as it’s fun and fluid it should be good.

  • Sgt_MountainLion

Amazing! Guys please make this a PS4 Bundle with the pre-order exclusive weapon. You just gave me a reason to purchase a PS4.

  • Sgt_MountainLion

Oh yeah I hope you add back one of my favorite features from Up Your Arsenal and Deadlocked <.< I really, REALLY, REALLY loved the first person camera option. It was a completely different experience to finish the game, than replay and finish in first person. Kinda reminded me of Metroid and added a new perspective.

Believe me I finished all Ratchet and Clank games, at least 20 times each :P I know replay value when I see it.

    • Sgt_MountainLion

Oh yeah! also maybe you can poke fun at Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch by adding Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper references :I

To get my favorite PS2 trio up and running again ;P Regardless I’m super excited and gonna pre-order this as a bundle when I see it available.

  • I am soooooo excited you have no idea. I could play this series for all time and never get tired of it. When Nexus came out I replayed all the games after it and wrapped up my remaining platinum trophies too. [still need to do the Vita plats]

    So good <3

  • You had me until 2016.

  • Day.. One!

One of my favorite franchises of all time. I’m so pleased with the way you have handled this via a ‘Re-imagining’. Going to play this one in to the dirt.

I’m just going to toss this out there once.. no need for Royalty consideration..

Ratchet & Clank: The Future Collection

Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty, Crack in Time, Into the Nexus – all remastered for PS4! Cha-ching!
