Yakuza 5: Open World Action Across 5 Cities in Japan

Yakuza 5 will be coming out later this year, and we have some more information for those of you eager to jump into the seedy underbelly of Japan!

Let’s start of with stuff you probably know about: Yakuza 5 has five protagonists, and takes place across five major Japanese cities. Important to note — each protagonist engaged with the criminal organization in the past, and are about to get pulled right back into the midst of it.

But like any good open world game, it’s the little things that matter. So between the story plot, you can occupy your time by relieving stress at the batting center, and test your luck and skills at the UFO Catcher (Claw Machine) mini-game! Or if you’re more of a people person, Yakuza 5 also has options for poker, sea fishing, and bowling!

Lesser known about the western release of Yakuza 5 is that includes all the Japanese DLC, including “Another Drama” which is a series of extensive sub-plots that focus on each protagonist. Whether you are training for dance battles, ferrying people around as a taxi driver, or even helping out as a temporary ramen cook, there’s a whole world to explore! Head into CLUB SEGA and play some Virtua Fighter 2 with your friends over PSN. If you prefer to play something more rhythmic, you can check out Taiko no Tatsujin and drum to the beat of some music.

Oh, and not to mention that the battle system and customization system have been enhanced from Yakuza 4, so players can fight with the best of them!

We also have the final installment of the interviews with Yakuza 5’s developers answering the questions fans sent to #Yakuza5PS! Learn more details about the music in Yakuza, the developers’ thoughts on the Western release and the overall themes of the game.

Finally, Yakuza 5 is now available for digital pre-order! Every pre-order comes with the Yakuza 5 “Fulfiller of Dreams” static Theme, featuring the five main characters in the game!

  • I know this is a long shot but any chance that this can eventually be added to the PS4’s ability to stream PS3 games or as a release on the PS4 so we don’t have to hold onto a PS3 to enjoy this for years to come? I’m not talking a remake but just a port.

I may not understand the word that may involve, but I’d even be willing to rebuy like they’ve done with other games on PS3 to PS4.

  • Just pre-ordered. I’m sure this is going to be really good!!

  • Maaaan i hate playing on ps3, release it on ps4

  • Everyone complaining about a digital-only release should just shut up and be thankful that Yakuza 5 is coming out at all.
I’d take a digital release over no release at all. Do you want to see more of this series and possibly retail versions of upcoming games? Then just buy 5 and show your support instead of whining about a digital release.

    • I’m not buying a digital only release just to support a series if it doesn’t satisfy or meet my needs. You have your consumer role all twisted. People have their right to express how they feel about the digital only release, at least they are talking about the game while you’re here making things personal like a child.

  • Thank you John Hardin, Sega, and Sony for finally giving us Yakuza 5, one of the most overlooked and underrated franchises since it’s initial release way back when. I’m assuming that this release will be a transparent 1:1 localization that does not see any of the cuts made in 3 with some of the minigames, hostess quests, etc. I’m a bit indifferent on it being digitally released but I do have the imported version with the full box artwork and inserts, so I’m personally not really concerned. I’m just thankful it’s made its way to the west. If this does well, do you feel that there’s potential for the 1+2HD to be released? I’d love to have a complete collection of all 5, zero, and Dead Souls.

  • @John Hardin

You said that the timed launch discount in the UK should be the same 15% off the €/£ equivalent of $39.99. Do you know if that is going to be the correct currency conversion of $39.99 (currently around £26) or is it going to be the game industry conversion of $40 = £40?

  • @John Hardin

Is the game work with DS4? :)

  • The last time I’ve checked, there was 2 Yakuza game on the Japanese playstation store for PS4, when those game will be getting a western release?

  • John Hardin, some questions

    1. When will the past Yakuza games be avalable for PS4, digital or physical?

    2. When will Yakuza 3 be in the PSN store?

    3. Same question from #2 for Yakuza 1 and 2 HD?

    4. How are the pre-order numbers for Y5? Are they good?

    5. If sales from Y5 are good, what is the next step?

Here is a non Yakuza question…When will Valkyria Chronicles be in the PSN store with trophies?

  • Yakuza Is Very Fun <3 I Am Keeping My PS3, PS Vita, & PS4 All Together.

  • @John Hardin

Will Yakuza 5 appear in Russian PSN? I’m really wanna preorder it as well as some other russian fans.

  • Thanks for bringing Yakuza 5 in the west. I’m in the “physical copy” clan, but since I bought the Japanese version a while ago just to have it my collection. I don’t really mind have a digital to be able to play the game in an understandable language.. :) I can understand the people being disappointed not having a physical release, but it’s better than nothing I guess.

I bought Ryu go Gotoku Ishin on PS4 on the release day and never played it. Hope to seen if we’ll see that game in the west. I have my doubts on this one, because Kenzan was never released here.

Now bring Yakuza 1/2 collection HD and Yakuza Zero PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.

  • Awesome, but why no PS4 port? Ishin and Zero got PS4 ports. After playing Ishin in 1080p 60fps its going to be hard going back to ps3…

  • So, just seen a youtube vid of a guy who’s pre-ordered Yakuza 5 from the US PSN Store and he showed a screengrab of the pre-order screen, the date being December 31st 2015. I mean I’ve waited this long, i can wait a few more months i guess, but is the date on the PSN Store final, or just a placeholder for now ?

Also, sorry to keep going on about this, as i am sure you get it every day from fans, is there any indication as to when us guys in the EU will get the pre-order arriving in store and will we get the usual exchange rate of $39.99US = £39.99GBP. I don’t want to sound like i am complaining, because the pricing is nothing to do with you at all, but i hope it’s not mega expensive for us in the EU !

  • To everyone criticizing the digital-only format- I hear you. But If you truly love the Yakuza series and want to see more localizations you will bite the bullet and get it sine-disc. If the fans don’t rally around this from the get-go and show that we’re just as enthusiastic about the releases in the west as they are in Japan, this will be the end of it all. Just pre-order! $34 is a steal for this quality content anyway.

  • NO PHYSICAL RELEASE????!!!!!! for a game thats going to require over 30GB’s of SPACE!!!!
SEGA what the #&^%$ are you thinking!!!!!

    no disc no buy

    • SEGA don’t think much.. This YAKUZA 5 doesn’t come because of SEGA, it comes thankfully to SONY, with a petition so I’m just glad to just have this Masterpiece !!!

      Thanks you Sony :)

  • Preordered. This is the only game I’m willing to preorder digitally, lol.

I hope the QA goes smoothly and the game is out soon. I’m waiting since 2012 for this (seems crazy when I think about it).

  • Hi, I wanted to know when we gonna get the pre order for the other country ? Will I have to buy it with a new english account ?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I gave my PS3 away to my niece. If Yakuza 5 gets the PS4 treatment, I’ll buy it, I really like the series.
