The Drop: New PlayStation Games for 9/1/2015
The Drop

Some weeks come around and there’s so much good gaming compressed into such a small space of time, panic attacks are induced. This is one such week. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Mad Max, Grow Home, Super Time Force Ultra, and much more all launch on PlayStation this week. Bid farewell to your free time.

The long awaited return of tactical espionage action sneaks onto PS4 this week. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain brings a tremendous open world to all the stealthy proceedings, with gameplay heavily rooted in the precedent set by Peace Walker. Control Big Boss like never before, build up and outfit Mother Base, and unravel the mysterious story woven across more than a decade of games.

If you’re not entirely the stealthy type, why not get a little grease on your fingers with Mad Max, coming to PS4. Developed by Avalanche Studios (Just Cause series), this brutal open-world action game gives players control of grizzled survivor Max and his beat-up-but-ever-reliable Magnum Opus.

That’s just the start, folks! For the full list of new games coming to PlayStation, read on. And enjoy the Drop!

  • This week is insane. Happy gaming, everyone!

  • Guess I’ll try that Metal Gear game. It’s suppose to be good, right?

  • Will we finally get an anime sale this week?

  • Does anyone know when the pre-load for MGS V will start? I can’t wait to play!

  • I’m soo excited for metal gear solid 5 phantom pain for ps3 retail version plus mad max and until dawn for ps4 retail version when i plan to buy them on this coming tuesday while doing birthday shopping. even i have a week off from work to play those 3 interesting games, that’s for sure.

    • Excellent picks. at your friendly local retail.

    • Why would you buy MGS5 on PS3 if you have a PS4? I literally don’t see any reason other than you wanting to play MGO with you friends and they don’t have a PS4. The game is 720p30 on PS3 but it’s 1080p60 on PS4 and the Dualshock 3 is a piece of s*** we don’t have to struggle with anymore.

    • @ supermoc10 – Wow just STFU.

  • This week is going to be a PHANTOM PAIN to my wallet! (You get it, Ryan?) XD

  • Ryan, do you know when can we pre-load The Phantom Pain?

  • Hi Ryan, my waiting is over for MGS V phantom pain because it is coming this Tuesday but i gonna play it tomorrow night at 11pm. i might pick Mad Max up on launch day if it getting good score on reviews in Metacritic. September look like best month to me because there are too many games to play like Fifa 16, NBA 2k16, MGS V phantom pain and Mad Max

  • Cant wait for STFU

  • UGH… I want to get “Mad Max” really bad… BUT since I have never played anything from Avalanche Studios, I am very gun-shy about it. Pun intended. ;) All the videos do look really cool and I like the “Batman” combat mechanics too. I did enjoy the game “Rage” and I am definitely buying “Fallout 4” when it gets released.

    • As a super hardcore fan of Just Cause 2, I can assure you that team knows what it’s doing.

    • Just Cause 2? Darn it, Ryan. You just talked me out of ever buying Mad Max. I didn’t know that’s who made it. Now I understand why this game has had almost no attention, whatsoever. Been looking forward to it since PS4’s launch and now I know that buying it would be an utter waste of money. :/

    • @ Pan

You’ve been looking forward to it since PS4’s launch but didn’t know who made it? You’re quite the poor researcher.

And, whatever it was about Just Cause 2 you didn’t like, what makes you think those same issues will carry over to Mad Max? Do you not realize that people tend to get better at their craft the more they study/practice it?

Do you really want to be one of those guys that criticizes and dismisses a product without even trying it? Those guys always look stupid.

  • Does MGSVTPP unlock at 9 pst(12 est) tomorrow? Also, when does the pre-load start?

    • To answer your first question, yes (I can tell by the timer on psn). Your second, preloading started 2 hours after your comment.

    • That is a good question. My last PSN preorder/preload didn’t unlock until a bit after midnight EST. Some people say that it doesn’t unlock until 12pm PST. I still plan on staying up late tonight just in case this has changed. Can anyone confirm that the PS4 digital version of MGSV will occur at 12am EST tonight and not 3am EST/12pm PST?

  • “Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls” gets my pick for this week..
    Always bet on Despair!

  • disgaea5 demo for me and arnello (will buy it when i have the resources)

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Danganronpa Pain!!!! Won’t be picking up MGS5 yet, but I’m still excited nonetheless!

(I wonder when “he” will show up in the comments…)

  • Is BROTHERS a cross buy if you own it on PS3?

    • At the time of this writing, I don’t believe so.

    • No, and the PS4 version has been available digitally for weeks. This is the retail version, which would disqualify it from cross-buy in any case.

To be honest, I’m a bit surprised no one has expressed joy at seeing a retail version for this. To my knowledge, none was released for PS3. The only reason I’m not excited is my lack of PS4. But I assume those who prefer physical media are out there celebrating…quietly. :)

  • I am finishing up Ground Zero as I speak and Ii will be picking The Phantom Pain this Tuesday. Can’t wait

  • “Would you like to super size this weeks drop?”
    Yes sir & thank you…

  • madmax…

  • also why is pvz garden warfare full price? when popcap announced a permanent price drop in may? its $20 on all other platforms other than playstation

  • The Drop for September 1st, 2015…Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain…and nothing else matters lol

    • Eh, Metal Gear Solid is taking a backburner for me until it hits the bargain bin or becomes one of the free games for PS+. After Ground Zeroes there’s just no way I can justify paying full price for a “full game” with that title any longer.

Mad Max is the main thing on my radar this week. Just finishing the download now…

Got Nobunaga’s Ambition on my radar as well, but that will probably wait until I hear more reviews and see more gameplay of it I suppose.

Still astounded that Grow Home managed to win the vote for this month. Either we’ve got a lot of stoners that decided to start voting…or that vote had to be rigged. Though to be fair, the casual gamers may have started to outnumber the rest of us…”replay value” used to be a concept.

    • @Death8u4u so your not picking up The Phantom Pain because you paid for a tech demo? Before you purchase anything i’d recommend looking into it I mean Ground Zeroes had articles about it being 2 hours long, within a week or 2 some people did 5 minute speed runs, Ground Zeroes has a 75 on Metacritic.

Look up info on The Phantom Pain, it’s getting 9s and 10s, last I checked it had a 95 on Metacritic, you’ll get over 100 hours with all main missions, side ops, and base/equipment development, and MGO isn’t even available till October but it’s getting all these accolades

Honestly judging The Phantom Pain thinking it’ll barely be a game like Ground Zeroes…I just can’t comprehend how your thinking process.

    • You aren’t comprehending my “thinking process” because you don’t believe I’m getting Phantom Pain. I’ll get it. I just won’t pay for it. The cost of the “tech demo” should have adjusted the cost of the actual game itself. Instead I pre-ordered the demo thinking it’d have a decent amount of content in it only to be letdown by a demo that could be beaten in an hour or two tops. The demo should have been free.

    • @Death8u4u I can understand your perspective on the GZ “glorified demo”. I picked up GZ on PS3 for $15 and then a PS4 fell into my lap ;). I then picked up GZ on PS4 during a PS Store sale at $5. I paid $20 for the PS3 and PS4 version of GZ. There is alot of depth and replayability in that game for the type of audience it seeks out. It’s not anybody’s fault, nor your own, that the available options in GZ did not match your expectations and did not have the replay factor on par with the price you paid.
I can pay $60 for a COD game and not like it. The guy down the street can pay $80 for the special edition and loves every bit of it. I’m super stoked for MGSV so I can close out the storyline from Hideo Kojima. Played all MGS games except for the ACID titles.
Good luck in finding your sale but don’t flush the work the developers put into a game just to get back at Konami. This will be my last Konami title for the foreseeable future.

  • Finally Metal Gear Solid V will be mine. I already know it will be my personal GOTY this year. Just wish David Hayter was in it…

  • Not enough your indifference to MK X (PS3) made WB easy to can the game PS3 after misleading people for 2 years, but now even small games like Space Hulk cant come on time?
What happend to PS3 version of Space Hulk? Vita gets priority?
Game was scheduled 4 weeks ago and never arrived, but Vita version is coming.
Is it hard to make or release PS3 games on time?
    Thank you.

  • Disgaea 5 demo is such a pleasant surprise. Thank you NIS America.

  • Sweet, big week of gaming!

MGS V + Mad Max for me!

  • Waiting for my MGSV collector’s edition to arrive, can’t wait! Can we expect any MGSV theme or PSN avatars coming out this week too?

  • Hey Ryan . I have a question that I doubt will be answered but needs to be asked. Over two years ago
Sony promised ALL psn+ members would get the exclusive series Powers for free ,a year ago we here
that only Americans get the series but are told it will release in other regions at a later date . It,s fall 2015
now but stil powers is only available to Americans. Will Sony ever release this for Canada and other regions
or will they admit thet lied to us and never planned on anyone but U.S users getting Powers ? Or did they hope itwould be forgotten

  • Wtf? Space hulk this week? There’s been no news about it at all and all of a sudden it’s out? That’s either really good or really bad. Hopefully it’s as good as xcom.

  • PS2 Classics Wish List:
    – Silent Hill 2/3/The room/Origins (i don’t like HD remasters)
    – Vlakyrie Profile 2 Silmeria
    – Xenosaga 1/2/3

  • MGS V TPP for me this week, any news about Magic Duels on PS4?

  • ARMELLO! cant wait. Can you put it up now please :P :D

  • Looks like the Gaming Semester is back in session!

  • Why MGSV is not on the Vita?

  • Yes MGS V: TPP pre-load has started, so excited

  • So many games… So little time. Metal gear and mad max on my list plus the other games I’ve yet to finish. It’s gonna be a busy fall and winter. Can’t wait

  • no ps2 or ps1 classics still ugh

  • Great drop! Nice to see a few Vita games getting released. I’m still waiting on Magic The Gathering for PS4.

  • Still no Socom. What a joke.
Who even plays these ridiculous games you guys release?

Will you ever release games geared towards adults?

    Socom Confrontation now please.

    • So Mad Max (an apocalyptic and brutal wasteland), Danganronpa (a series about kids being forced to kill each other) and Metal Gear Solid V (the story of a war hero turned criminal) are childish? Get over yourself guy. Who plays these games? Millions of people who clearly aren’t you.

  • David Hayter is Solid Snake. MGSV will still be great though… but Hayter is Snake.

    • This isn’t even Solid Snake yo, it’s Big Boss.

    • You KNOW what I mean.

    • Solid Snake is the most unaltered clone of Snake (who took over the title Big Boss). It makes absolute sense to miss Hayter. He voiced Snake (Big Boss) in MGS:3 & Peace Walker. I played Ground Zeroes, Sutherland sucks!. The Japanese version got their original voice actor last I read, so the whole thing makes no sense in that regard. Very disappointing. :(

  • Metal Gear

  • This is ridiculous, there are lots of people around the world playing MGS V: The Phantom Pain on PS4 right now and have been doing it for at least a week. I have people on my friggin’ friend’s list that started playing the game on Friday and not just from the US or Europe, even from South America. Hell, the internet is full of spoilers at this time. The sad thing is that people who pre-ordered it digitally have to wait until Tuesday to finally play it. I guess that’s what you get for trying to things the legal way. So much for a “worldwide” launch.

    • Look at it this way, a good portion of those people may have their accounts permanently banned for accessing an illegal form of the game. They’ve been doing that for a few releases lately. Companies have been very irritated with the early releases for games.

  • Anyone knows if TPP on PS3 runs like GZ or better?

(Don’t start with the “Why don’t you own a PS4 by now” thing. Just can’t be right now, and I’m grateful I can play it on last-gen, not like certain fighting game)

  • grow home looks interesting. although i would love to see Azure dreams and mega man X collection become available.

  • Way too many games of interest. I guess this marks the start of the Holiday gaming season where they tend to release too many games of interest all within short time window of each other?

This is when I prefer for games to be short and awesome and not pack in any filler content at all.

  • Danganronpa Another Episode and the Disgaea 5 demo will probably be it for me this week. Might also give Grow Home a look when I’ve got the time.

  • Disgaea 5 demo, sweet

  • Been watching the twitch streams can’t believe retailers broke the release date (mad max). Bought mad max on ps store and nownplayingnwatch the clock on the libary

  • What is going to be available to pre order this week?

  • Metal gear 5! Best birthday gift!!! Can’t wait

  • Will the sound track for MGSVTPP be available on the Playstation Store too?

  • Brothers is a really good game. I bought it on PS3. Does anyone know if it’s cross buy? Sometimes playstation does that. Or will I have to purchase it again to play on my PS4? I would love to play it over again

    • Looks like you’ll need a separate purchase to play this on PS4. I own the PS3 version and the PS4 one doesn’t show as free for me.

By the way, the digital version for PS4 has been available for weeks. This is the retail version being announced here.

See my reply to #15 (for now anyway) for more of my blather. XD
